Kids bike. (4-5yrs). Schwinn, TREK, Elektra?? Suggestions?

gringa0316

Want to get her a nice quality bike. A 16" is most appropriate, as she is on the taller side. This will be her 1st "big kid" bike- we are graduating from her tricycle; a bit overdue since she had outgrown it over a year ago. Advice, suggestions, Thanks!!

Just as with an adult - ANY of the major brands from a real bicycle shop will be good bikes. Fit, & feel will be more important than brand name. Don't surprise her with a new bike. Have her come along & look at as many as possible in various shops. She will still be surprised & thankful.

What kind of bicycle should I buy?

I went into a bike shop in hoboken and he only sold Specialized bikes bc "the were the best" he said. Are they really good bikes? Now I haven't bought a bike since I was a little kid so I am sure Im out of the loop when it comes to new styles and technology. 99 percent of the time I will be riding it on concrete for some cardio and MAYBE I'll take it on some trails once in awhile. Should I get a mountain bike? How much should I spend? I don't want a POS nor do I intend on racing in the tour De France. Any and all input is greatly appreciated as this is a hobby I miss and would love to take up again.

Answer
Strictly salesperson talk. Specialized bikes are good to great. But there is NO "best" bicycle or "best" bicycle brand name...period! If you compare the components on various bikes of the same type and within the same price range, they will ALL use similar & sometimes the EXACT same components from suppliers such as Shimano, SRAM or SunRace. If one company were the "best" they would have an unfair advantage over the competition.

Test ride several brands. Just go with your gut feelings & which bike shop you think will provide the best after-the-sale service. ALL bicycle shops provide at least one FREE after-the-sale check-up/tune-up under warranty as the bike gets settled in. Some shops may do this for a year. One shop near me does this for LIFE!

I'd look into a hybrid. Some now call these "fitness bikes". Always look for double wall rims and a "cassette" rear cog, not a "freewheel".

Etc., etc., etc. Many companies to choose from.
