Looking for a mountain bike for my boyfriend for Xmas but I dont know anything about them and dont want to get ripped off. The guy doesnt know the model of this Gary Fisher bike so i cant look up more info on it. Here is a picture:

He is asking $200 for it. Good deal or not?

Answer
Hard to tell really from the small, low-res pic, but it looks like an older kids bike. Judging the size of the rings vs. tires, its probably 24" wheels. Stem assembly suggests that its at least 12-14 years old. Or really cheap.

I certainly wouldn't pay $200 for it.

What's the optimal handlebar width for mountain biking (all-mountain style)? High or low rise? ?

I Shouldn'

I'm 6'0" and most concerned about control going down, but twisty technical single track is also important. Thx...

Answer
Well....you have optimal body fit, and you have optimal riding style. Bars are generally chosen by the width of your shoulders as a starting point. Grab a broomstick with one hand and hold it out in front of you horizontally while putting your other hand on it. If you measure that outside distance, this is most likely where you're going to be most comfortable.

Cross country bars started to get ridiculously narrow for a few years. I have a couple old flat bars that I cut down to 22-1/2" and 23-1/4". I just look at them sadly now and wish I had that metal back. lol. The trend lately has been with wider 25"-28" bars and for good reason. Wider bars do give you a little better control, but they also tend to give people less discomfort in their shoulder blades, neck, and hands....especially if you ride aggressively or take drops and jumps. When I made the switch to wide bars, I immediately noticed that my hands felt fresher and on longer rides/urban drop rides the twinge in my lower neck/between the shoulder blades went away.

As far as rise, sweep, and bend, it's just personal preference. You can use different rises to dial in your cockpit height/fit on a particular bike/fork combo.

I ride 31.8mm 27-1/2" bars with a 1.5" rise now and I think I found my sweet spot with them. I'm 6' tall, 34" sleeve, 43" chest. When I get on other people's xc bikes that have 24" and 25" bars it feels like I'm riding a kid's bike and a little too twitchy for my liking. Keep in mind that if you have twisty trails lined with trees, wide bars will add some more challenge and you might find yourself jacking your wheel and flying over the bars if you aren't careful. I did that a couple times at first. lol. :o)

Hey guys, i've decided to get off my lazy but and started to work out.
I spend too much time on my computer as i work from my pc, and i love the job so i don't want to quit it.

I'm 17yrs old. 6ft Tall, 300 pounds in weight. I don't want to get skinny, i just want to become a reasonable weight and tone up maybe even build big muscle.

I have bought a exercise bike and weight lifting set, i normally burn 1000 calories in 1 hour + 1/2, should i repeat this session 3 times a day? also i weight lift 3 times a day for half hour.

My daily calories intake is around 1500, i don't eat any fat foods really, i've always eaten healthy plus i drink lots of water.

Just wondering if i should change my routine and what's the max calories i should burn everyday? also how much weight should i lose.

Thanks for reading guys, any help will be appreciated.
Hi, sorry guys... forgot to mention i'm Male. Some of you thought i'm female. Many thanks for the replies!

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if youâre trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid âHigh Glycemic Load Carbsâ (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:

*3) Exercise on most days by doing cardiovascular training and/or resistance training activities.

Read a book or find a certified trainer to make sure your doing all resistance training exercises correctly. A good book to buy that teaches you the cardiovascular training basics is âFitness for Dummiesâ.

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is âDietary Guidelines for Americans 2005â. summer activities for a 3 year old and her 10 mo brother?

VeryConfus

I just started a nanny job and this 3 year old girl is the most active girl ever and i don't want to put her in front of the tv all the time so aside for the obvious beach, bubbles, sprinkler, park what creative activities could I do with her out side? I am also watching he 10 mo old brother so it cant be anything where she needs my COMPLETE attention!

Answer
By all means, keep the TV off as much as possible. I'm a PT nanny, and we don't get paid to sit the kids in front of the TV. Plus, that backfires if the kid is sitting around for hours on end and their behavior goes south later on.

I nanny for a 2 1/2 year old and a 11 month old. I've been with the family since the older boy was 5 months old. I'm also a graduate student.

Playground, water play, balls and games, tricycles/bikes/scooters, sensory tables, sidewalk chalk, paint with water (can be done as a part of water play). You can also do playdough, simple cooking activities, painting, sensory activities, etc. You can also get kid friendly magnifying glasses and tweezers and go on bug/nature hunts/hikes.

For water play - fill up a small pool or an assortment of large buckets with water. Provide brushes, cups and funnels, sponges, spray bottles, watering cans, etc.

Sensory tables - uncooked beans, rice, oatmeal, or sand and other materials. Provide kid sized tweezers, cups and funnels and spoons, etc. You can also put magnetic items in it and use magnetic wands, or hide other objects and have her look for them.

Cooking activities - fruit smoothies, fruit salad, bagel pizzas, strawberry shortcake, etc. Let her feel, smell, and even taste the ingredients. Use plastic knives with supervision, and you handle the food processor/chopper or oven and other hot/sharp items.

The 10 month old can participate in many of those things as well, with supervision. You can also set some activities aside to do one-on-one while the 10 month old naps.

Schwinn Meridian Trike?

best kids mountain bike 2012 on 18
best kids mountain bike 2012 image

Loosid

Anyone have any feeling on this? Overall basic reviews are pretty solid everywhere I have looked but I'm a real bicycle novice. I am also very overweight and I would like to ride bikes with my kids plus I really miss riding bikes! Thanks in advance, here's a link to view it...
http://m.sears.com/productdetails.do?partNumber=00611132000P&sid=&psid=

Answer
I think it depends on your reasons for choosing a trike.....and on just how much "very" overweight you are & your level of fitness. That Schwinn is one of the cheaper versions of adult trikes...not horrible, though. They're all quite heavy and weigh in the 50lb range give or take, even the better quality ones, and of course they're as heavy as a tank when compared to normal 2-wheeled bikes. But, despite their weight it doesn't matter quite as much until you put steeper hills into the equation (harder pedaling and they take longer to come to a stop). I think they can be a lot of fun, and there are also a lot of good reasons for some people to choose a trike over a bike.

If you're not like super overweight and you can walk around the block n such, then this one might be ok. I'd recommend one with at least three gears, though, and of course better quality ones will be nicer overall...and a bit more expensive. If you weigh more than 225lbs or so, then you need to choose more carefully and look for the mfr's max weight rating. Some max out around that level but there are plenty that will handle 300 or as much as 500 pounds total weight. They also come in different wheel sizes and frame heights if stepping up is difficult.

Torker makes a nice multi-speed that uses an internal gearing hub instead of the cheaper and maintenance-required freewheels/derailleur....pricier but much better: http://www.torkerusa.com/bikes/utility/2012-tristar

Workman Cycles and Sun also make some good models, and this site has some others: http://www.tririder.com/

Kent bikes are sold at Target, Amazon, and a few other outlets, and they're about the same as Schwinn, maybe a touch nicer for some models, and in the same price range. If you think you'll want a nicer trike or might ride it a lot/keep it around for a long time, I'd spend a bit more if you can.

Also, if you aren't worried about keeping your balance or whatever other reasons a trike makes a good choice for some people, I can tell you that most normal hardtail mountain bikes will hold people up to about 250-275 pounds with just a part swap or two. I had a good friend who was a touch over 300 pounds who rides some expensive lightweight bikes (mountain, road, and downhill), and he's never really had any issues other than using a decent wheel and stout seatpost...he also weighs about 210 these days, thanks to riding his bike!

Get out there and be a kid with your kids. :)

Which is the best bike?

Fresh Pisu

So my child really wants a bigger bike. He is growing out of it and everytime he pedals, he hits the handle which turns into a bruise.

It's nearly his birthday now so it's going to be a good fit. He currently has a BMX bike. We go for a family cycle everyday. The track is mostly paved but there are bumps and gravel as well (hardly but I guess that counts). He is pretty flexible so a little bend on the back is okay. We go cycling for about 45 minutes but I'm not sure if that's considered a high or low distance. Speed is not a factor but he wants a speedy one I guess. But a fast one will be great. A gear will also be great since we go up a slightly steep pavement.

We have been looking online for Bikes on sale and found Mountain, Road, Hybrid and more for kids. We have been making targets for a few. We have considered the price and since it's his birthday, I won't care how pricy it is. There are also a few more bikes which I can't name in English.

We live in Thailand and cycling is very popular here and most bikes are good in deal. So we are likely getting a Hybrid. Fast, light, paved and non- paved surfaces, comfy position, long distances.

Also, it would be great if you can help me recognise these bikes.

What type are the first three?

http://la-bicycle.com/2012/131.html

Thanks!

Answer
First - read what's on this link - "How to Choose a Bicycle" - http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

Next - see your independent, authorized, knowledgeable, friendly, local bicycle shop(s). Have your son extensively test ride a few. The one that rides & feels the "best" to him - buy it.

There is no "best" bike for everyone. "Best" is in the eye (and the ride) of the beholder. The one that would be the "worst" is one of those cheap full suspension bikes. Stay away!

Buying a new Bike, HELP!?

best kids mountain bikes reviews image

Jem III

I loved to ride on bikes when I was kid. After looking at bikes' reviews, I remain unsure which bike I should buy. I live in West Virginia where there's some bike trails.. there will be some dirt and road to ride onto. There's a bike shop nearby and she says Trek 3500 would be good buy, selling at 369.99. Would this be good deal? I'm hoping to ride every morning starting soon as I am addicted to workouts! Would this bike be good to start with or should I buy better one or other brand - money wisely? Any suggestion would be great. Thank you.
If I decide to buy Trek 3900 or Hardrock (better bikes = more money) will it be worth it? Or it wouldn't matter as that much?

Answer
Jeremy, Welcome back to mountain biking! We've got a strong community to support you. A little bit of information about what makes a mountain bike functional: What is required to make a "real" mountain bike, are double wall rims, and a cassette type rear hub, each created for strength and durability. To tell you the truth, the Trek mountain bikes start producing these on their bikes at the 4300 model, which would also upgrade you from the "alpha white" frame to the "alpha black" frame, saving you a bit of strength. If you are looking into the 2011's, ALL of the Hardrock models are equipped to serve you on the trails, if you look at a 2010, you'll need to get a Hardrock sport or above. I don't know if I'd feel terribly safe on a 3500. Trek is a very nice bike company, but when they try to compete at the lower end, they scramble a bit to toss together a bike with low end components, as their frames take up most of the price of what they are working with. I would recommend a 2011 Hardrock base, which retails for $420. The 3500 is simply not built with a similar quality. Also, maybe do a search for a 2010 giant rincon, which has all you require, plus a fork with a lockout and disc brakes. I mention this over the 2010 hardrock sport disc simply because I've seen it sold for less. Their forks are a tad bit better than the trek's and specialized as well.

BUT, with those requirements set, FIT it the biggest thing. Go in and give them a test drive, make sure your legs are almost straight on the down push of your crank to keep optimal power transfer and geometry.

Again, good luck!!!

I like the first one because there's a Toys R Us store near where I live, and I can have the employees there assemble it for me. But many people say bikes at Toys R Us stores are just "toys" with low quality.
I did some research and found out that Mongoose has quite a good reputation as well as Polaris!
However, I've found no review about the Avigo one!
So, what do you guys think?
Thank you!
I forgot to mention that I just want a bike to ride for fun, not for serious mountain biking!
Any bike that is <= $200 is OK, any recommend guys?

Answer
4. None of the above. All cheap full suspension bikes of VERY low quality. And you do realize all 3 have 24" wheels meant for a kid I hope.

A good hardtail beats a cheap full squish bike any day of the week. Real full suspension bikes start in the thousands of dollars - not hundreds. See link below from Trek. This is their LOWEST priced model full suspension bike.

My other favorite saying... Real bicycle shops do not sell toys & Toys 'R Us does not sell real bicycles. Neither does Wally World, K-Mart, Target & most on Amazon.com. They sell "bicycle shaped objects".

Why is it so hard to find a 14-Inch bike for my son?

best bikes for kids 16 inch image

Abigail

My son is 3 1/2 and sat on a 12-Inch bike yesterday. He rode it great but his knees already came up high so I was thinking he needed a 14-Inch bike but they are hard to find. 12 and 16-Inch are common but why no 14-Inch? I think a 16-Inch would be too big but the 12" look small. Any suggestions?
If 14" bikes aren't made, would a 16" bike be okay or should he be on a too small 12"?
I saw one 14" bike at Toys R Us and none, anywhere else.

Answer
The standard 12, 16, 20, 24 etc. exists because the 4" gap is considered small enough to accommodate all riders. Kids bikes are one size frame (in general - but there are size differences) At 3 1/2 I would think a 12" wheeled bike would work. Was the seat all the way down when he rode it? If so you can simply raise the seat - you'll need to do this a couple times a year to keep up with his growth. Usually, by the time the seat is as high as it can go, the next size with the seat set low will work. Because kids grow so fast the in-between sizes really aren't needed.

Unless your boy is very big for his age, I'm sure a 12" would be fine with the seat adjusted. He'll out grow it but kids bikes are so cheap it's usually not a cash issue. If you can't afford it, buy a used one at a garage sale etc. Also, friends, neighbors and family are usually looking to give old ones away, like you'll be doing in a few years. And if indeed a 16" is really in order check it out on him at the store. If he won't be riding until spring then maybe a 16" will fit in 6 months.

Be sure to check his bike out over the year. My kids are the only ones in the neighborhood with the seats adjusted right, tires pumped up, chain lubed and brakes in good working order.

I'm very attentive to my kid's bikes as I'm really into cycling. My 2 daughters have progressed fine from 12" to 16" to 24" now... and I'm a picky dad when it comes to bikes. The sizes worked fine.

Is $175 a good deal for a 1996 trek 930 Singletrack?

Q.V.

I'm interested in a getting a starter mountain bike. I found this on craiglist:
Trek 930 Singletrack 16 1/2 inch frame. Includes new saddle, new urban tires, fenders, rear rack, and two water bottle cages. $175.

Is a $175 too much for a 14 year old bike?

Answer
It depends on how much it fits what you were looking for

-looking for a Steel framed mountain bike
-Fits you perfectly (take to bike shop)
-components shift perfectly and frame in great shape

Any of those missing it isn't worth $50 to you but otherwise I personnaly would jump on it.

I have the guys version of this bike as it was my first bike that fit me that got me into cycling. I still use the bike for mountain bike and pulling my kids in a bike trailer and I love it. Got it a few years ago in Atlanta for $150 (had chipped paint and dent in frame). Put a lot of miles on it and love it. It it comes with the stock seat throw it in the trash as it is like sitting on a brick.

What to use for a 14wk baby and 2 yr old in a bike trailer? Helmets too big and car seat won't fit!?

I have a bike trailer for my two babies but I don't know how is best to keep my 14week old safest. A helmet won't fit until at least 18 months and her car seat won't fit in with my 2 year old as well :0( Don't want to be stuck in a stuffy, hot car all summer so would really like to keep fit and take them out on the bike! Help!! Thanks in advance :0)

Answer
The infant in the car seat cannot ride with the toddler -- so just get a bicycle child seat http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Classic-Bicycle-Child-Carrier/dp/B000ISXSSA for the toddler -- kid will be much happier being up there behind you and watching around the road. Also should be available at Target, locally.

Do police officers have to put children in carseats when they transport them?

sdj4u

I know buses are exempt from this law but are police cars also exempt? I don't think they should be because they get in accidents too and the kids aren't using the seatbelts as weapons. Oh, why don't they have to buckle their prisoners in either?
An officer transported my 3 year old to the station without using a carseat. My 15 year old offered to get the carseat out of my car to use but the officer said, "No, it'll be OK." Why isn't his actions considered child abuse because it threatened the life of a child! Can i sue for child endangerment?

Answer
We do buckle bad guys in. Our wagons don't have belts but safety padded bars that comes across the seated prisoners.
It is judged more effective than seat belts.
If an officer needs children transported in a non emergency situation they call for a sergeant.
In my city each sergeant has at least one child's car seat in the trunk. The sergeants cars are picked because they do not have cages.
Each sergeant has specific training, 4 hours worth, on the correct method of placing the two types of car seats we use in all of the types of vehicles sergeants use (not the bicycles).
All youth investigators have unmarked, uncaged cars and they get the same training as the sergeants. They do a lot of child transport during investigations.
Mounting a child's car seat correctly is complicated. Very very few parents take the time to find a approved instructor to learn.

In my city every firehouse has at least one trained instructor working days for the public to take a class in mounting a car seat.

I saw this on TV. The penalty was normally 30 day impound, but when the child (about 8 years old) sassed the officer, the father sold the bike and gave the kid a whipping. I don't think the father should have sold it.
To those who agree with selling it: Shouldn't he ever get another one if his behavior gets better?

Answer
Selling it made no sense. The spanking made perfect sense.

What are the top brand names for kids shoes that are in style this school year?

JG78

I live in PA and my 8 year old son lives with his Father in VA and it's getting time for school to start and I always try to get him the brand names that are in style and as for shoes I wanted to know what brand shoes are in style for this school year.

Answer
It depends. What kind of stuff is your son into? My boys like to skateboard and ride bikes and stuff, so they always get DC's Etnies, DVS, Adio, Circa, Globe, Lakai, Osiris...shoes like that.

For more sporty or kind of Hip Hop, go for K-Swiss, Adidas, Nike, Reebok, Puma.

Shoes that never go out of style, Converse and Vans.

(By the way, you can get all of those name brand or popular shoes in sizes that small. My kids were wearing skate shoes before they could walk)

Good luck!

If 6 white kids beat an unconcous black kid would whites protest?

intelligen

Why aren't the blacks protesting the crimminal incarcerated for almost killing a white kid? 6 to 1? Wake up foolish peasents.

Answer
I think most white people I know wouldn't because they would beleive if they did the crime....they deserved the punishment.

Isn't the object to arrest criminals? No matter what color they are? There was a gang of black kids who beat-up a white boy to steal his bike and for some reason they wouldn't charge them with a "race" crime even though they made racial comments. I mean this race stuff isn't a one-way street.

Alright, well I have terrible anxiety.. And it drives me nuts! I get it everyday, yet again I have only Twelve years of age. This anxiety, It put extremely big Rashes on my chest. I have been put in the Emergancy Room for anxiety. I have had to get a Lumbar-Puncture.
I also have severe depression, I am on No Meds. This depression has been here for years, I have cut myself since I was Ten.
That leaves over 750 scars on my right arm, And that has led to bullying. Being called "Emo" and such. When I was Eleven, I was sexually abused having to do things I never wanted to do. That has led drastic effect on me. I have almost killed myself around Four times, because of being bulliled. Since those boys did those things, I have been called "Slut" "Whore" "Skank"...
Despite the fact that I am adopted, my mother was Six-Teen years old when she had me.
So of course kids LOVE to pick on me saying.. I'm the daughter of a "Whore" "Slut" "Skank".. These words had killed my emotional concept of bonding with other humans.
I have the fear of getting attached, because everyone betrays me, they leave me. It feels like they love to hurt me.
I've lost my ability to cry. And that is so hard to deal with, I mean we all want to cry at some points and just never stop. Am I right?
Well ya' know I can't even start.
And You don't know how badly I want to.
When I look in the mirror I see imperfection, I lift up my shirt.. And think not enough ribs are showing, I need to lose weight.. So then I don't eat for a few weeks. But it's hard, I'm a athlete.
I've broken my self esteem.
Somedays I just sleep all day, and never do anything.
I have no friends what so ever.
My bestfriend died, on July 3rd 2012.
And to this day I don't believe he's dead.
I still think he's out somewhere riding his mountain bike.
I've been to therapy, but I couldn't handle the big ball of happy.
I've been off and on drugs, and alcohol.
It made me feel so much better.
I'm trying to quit, and get my life back,
Help..

Answer
Hello! You are going through a lot right now. You are so young to be going through this. I'm sorry but hope I can help. I'm not a doctor but believe you do need help with some meds. I believe you need counseling also. But again i'm not a doctor. I was severly sexually abused for years and I am in therapy and take meds. Also I have anxiety. I try to deal with this by calming myself down by thinking of peaceful things. I try to stay positive in everything I do and say. This helps because negativity makes things worse. It is a shame that the other kids pick on you and bully you. Could you not say something to the school counselor and go to her or him for a little help. I feel you have some depression also. because you are so blue over your whole life. I'm sorry that you self harm. I don't understand that but know that it makes you feel, so thats why you do it. I think you need to check out different therapist not all are a like. I would go in and tell them you are not a big ball of happiness that you are a mess, that you are depressed and have anxiety, and low self esteem. That you are bullied at school and have been abused. This is nothing to be happy go lucky about. It is serious and you need to find a way to get through it. I hope you can stay off alcohol, it will make things worse not better I know because I tried to self medicate with alcohol myself and all it got me was drunk and in trouble, lol I hope u can find yourself some help. Seek medical attention before you are so bad you have to go into the hospital. Good luck I wish you the best young one. Blessings!

I'm pregnant and want to keep it but my boyfriend wants me to get an abortion. What do I do?

Q. Im 17 years old and I'll be 8 weeks pregnant on July 1st(I'm due February 10th 2012).. and my boyfriends 20 years old... I don't want to lose him but I don't want to lose the baby ive already created a little bond, and i don't believe in abortions... Hes never had a real job he just does mountain biking videos for friends and gets paid for it, but has no steady income.. I work about 20-30 hours at a clothing store and plan to finish high school online this summer, and go to hair school in september.. He says if I keep the baby that hes going to leave me and his child and doesn't want to look back, and if he comes around its cause he feels like he has to not because he wants to... I'm scared to have a kid at such a young age and being a single mother (I'm not sure how I'd be financially) but I know I could do it and that I'd be a great mother (I've always had that motherly instinct(I played with dolls till I was 13.. LOVED THEM!!)).. Any help or advice is much appreciated!! Thanks for reading this and responding!!

Answer
aww :] little baby :] im 17 weeks pregnant today. im 16 my boyfriend is 20. luckly we both wanted to keep it :]. and its a sad situation you in :[ im with you abortion is not something i would personally do. but i am pro choice if a women wants it they have the right. its your body your little baby your carrying so its your decision. but he has a decision to. he can leave. but if you dont think you can afford a baby there is the option of adoption (i wouldnt personally do it) there is open adoption, semi-open adoption, and closed adoption. and there are support groups. im in wic (helps you out with the baby). my boyfriend is on social security. so we have a bit of money coming in. a baby is the greatest gift (in my opinion) and it is normal to be scared, im terrifide but its an exciting thing:] so its worth it. hopefully your mother is supportive because she will be your best-friend. dont let him control your life. its not fair. it would be like having a bond with your new puppy and him taking it away and killing it. it would be sad. and the emotional scar after an abortion is horrible. it can also damage your chances of getting pregnant in the future. and sorry to say but chances are if he is threating to leave now, he probably wont stay.

which is more important baby or a boy?

Is there an infant seat system for bike trailers?

best kids bike trailer on Burley Bike

Arwen

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
Most bike systems are designed for babies 9 months and over. It's an issue of being able to hold their heads up enough to prevent the sort of jostling that biking creates. Even a carseat in a bike trailer, isn't secure enough to hold them steady, especially not in the case of a spill or accident. I also wanted something for our five month old to use with our bikes in the spring, but no such luck. Now she's 16 months, and we've gotten her a bike seat.

I think maybe just buy them a bike trailer and let them decide what they are going to do to. It might've been a risk you and your husband were willing to take, but each parent should decide for themselves.

Good luck!

What to use for a 14wk baby and 2 yr old in a bike trailer? Helmets too big and car seat won't fit!?

Aimee

Why do people HATE New Jersey?

best kids bike shop nyc on Museum Shop: Historical Museum Shop, Stone's Arms & Armor Book ...
best kids bike shop nyc image

KLD it.

I personally think it is a gorgeous, diverse state. Yeah we have our slummy parts, but who doesnt? People fail to see the miles and miles of gorgeous beaches, farmlads, acres of pine trees, and the Appalachin Mountains. Plus, your never, ever, more then an hours drive away from anything you want. It has 4 of the richest counties in the country, and the shopping capitol of the world!

Yet there is never any shortage of people ready to say they hate New Jersey, that it smells, it's dirty, and it's dangerous, all simply not true! I hate when people from PA try to say "we should blow up NJ and give PA a beach, it smells when ever we cross the border." (to them I like to say, because you don't know anything better then cow sh*t)

My question is, why do people hate NJ? and for those of you who talk trash about it, have you ever actually been here? or past the the highways you have travelled on?

Answer
I moved to New Jersey from Virginia about ten years ago. I was surprised at all of the beautiful countryside, the mountains, the forests, and all of the beautiful places. But in general, my experience in NJ was generally negative compared to other places.

For example, In Virginia I lived at the beach. I used to spend a lot of time at the ocean. In New Jersey, I had to pay every time I wanted to go to the beach. I was shocked when I first heard that and I'm still shocked ten years later. It's a huge turn-off when you're used to going to any beach you want on either coast without even considering a fee.

Also, the cost of living is a total shock unless you're coming from DC, Boston, or parts of California. You can easily pay $350K for a two bedroom cape cod if you don't want to commute for an hour. I had 4 kids so two bedrooms didn't cut it. And my wife raises our kids, so we had only one income, meaning $350K was out of the question, yet we needed at least 4 bedrooms, not two.

And finally, I had a hell of a time whenever I wanted pizza after midnight, people in stores and in traffic were generally unfriendly to strangers in comparison to most of the country, prices on dining, furniture, and clothing was much higher, there was no local broadcast news - only NYC, or Philly in the south, I could go for miles and never find a convenience store if I didn't know where to look, NJ vehicle inspections suck, the major highways had tolls, and for all the talk about being close to NYC culture, most people in NJ rarely ever went to a show in the city or any of the other cultural events.

I recently moved to what most NJ residents would consider a nightmare. It's a large midwestern city. I have beautiful manicured boulevards, I'm in a beautiful new house that would cost over $1 million dollars in NJ, I have more restaurants than NJ ever offered, at a much lower price, my property taxes are 1/3, I can take my kids to NFL, NBA, etc. without traffic and without hurting my pocketbook, I get almost as many national performance acts at half the cost, food is cheaper, clothes are cheaper, the school system is the best in the state, and people are FRIENDLY. Kids ride their bikes in the streets and neighbors sit out front in the evenings and share their lives. People are walking their dogs and stopping to meet or catch up with others.

For me, NJ was a stepping stone. I'll miss friends, I'll miss some beautiful countryside, but otherwise, compared to many other places I didn't find it a good place to live.

Best place to live in New York, NY for young family?

502EGL

We will be a mid to late 20's family with one kid and one dog relocating from FT. Benning, Ga. to New York, NY area. Wife is an accountant, I will seek employment with NYPD. Looking for a place that is relatively safe, good schools, house prices that match our jobs, backyard would be nice. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Unless your wife, as an accountant, makes buckets of money -- you can forget about Manhattan. The average one-bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood is $2,000/mo rent. If you're looking to buy -- it's about 1,100 per square feet -- about 1 million for less than 1,000 square feet of space, plus taxes, maintenance and utilities. Ridiculously expensive.

Great alternatives to rent or buy are:

In Queens: Forest Hills, Astoria, Long Island City and Flushing.

Forest Hills is beautiful, extremely safe, there's plenty to do, it's only a short 25 minute train ride to midtown Manhattan, and it's very affordable to buy and rent.

Astoria is just across the bridge from Manhattan (a 5 minute train ride to Manhattan). Esthetically it's not much and it is pricier than most places in Queens because it is so close to the city.

Flushing is an Asian neighborhood and is pretty up-and-coming in terms of development. New things are springing up there left and right, but I certainly would not want to raise a child there.

Long Island City is very nice and culturally diverse. It's relatively cheap and you're pretty close to the city (only one train stop away). The only problem is that you will have to rely on the 7 train to get there (which is not very reliable) and it's the only train. If service goes out, you're cabbing it.

If I were you, I would focus on Forest Hills. When NYC was being developed they chose Forest Hills to be like a park with lots of trees and grass (which is great for kids to go and play). It's very family-focused, and there's plenty to do for everyone. There's a huge park (Flushing Meadow Park) with a lake in the center of it where you can rent paddle boats). Flushing Meadow Park has a few tennis courts, a basketball court, a few playgrounds, a place to have a picnic and BBQ, and there's also a place to rent bikes to bike around. It's about a 10 minute walk from Forest Hills. In Forest Hills, they have playgrounds, lost of places to walk, a Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, lots of shopping, etc. It's pretty awesome.

Good luck!

How can I convince my parents to let me ride a Motorbike (NInja 250R)?

Hiya. I'm 15 (going to be 16 in about 5 months) and I really want to get a Sportbike. I'm not going to be doing wheelies flying down the road and zigzagging at 150 mph, I just want to be able to get to school and back and go over to some friends houses without having to ride a regular bike there. The one I'm looking at is a Kawasaki Ninja 250R, I figured I really don't need a 600 (that much speed and everything) so I thought that would be a good starter bike of sorts.

However, my parents are really stubborn about it. They kinda do the same thing with everything and figure "Oh man, I once heard someone died on a motorcycle" so they are convinced it's dangerous. And yeah, I know they are. But I live in a really small town, there isn't much traffic and it takes 10 minutes or so to get my to school (depending on the roads, etc.). Again, I wouldn't be speeding or anything, and I would wear a Helmet and Jacket so I don't see how the risk is that large. They won't do any research into it, the bike, motorcycling in general, or otherwise.

I'm looking for something to tell them to help convince them to let me go through with this, I told them I would take the Motorcycle course to learn how to ride, and pay for any gas for it out of my own pocket, but they didn't even bother thinking for more than a second before saying "No."

Thanks to all who reply. :)

Answer
You *CANNOT* convince your parents to allow you a sport bike. Sport bikes are know to cause good kids go bad. They know that you cannot ride a sport bike slowly. OKay? Understand? It is NOT HAPPENING.

Now, do you want to ride? Do you want *anything* similar to a motorcycle that the parents might accept? What do you need, instead of want?

You write: " I just want to be able to get to school and back and go over to some friends houses without having to ride a regular bike there. " Bottom -- easier than a pedal bike. Symba -- the Honda Super Cub that your parents' parents rode. http://alliancepowersports.com/models/Symba.html You can tell your parents that Symba is *no different* than riding a pedal bicycle, just as safe a pedal bike, but easier.

What should I get for a good starter dirt bike?

Jacob

This is gonna be my first dirt bike. I'm 14 and 5' 6" in a growth spurt. I've ridden four wheelers since I was little and I've decided to switch to dirtbikes. It's gonna mainly be used riding on trails, but the trails are wide and smooth and fast. I also might do some motocross racing but that's not gonna be the main purpose. So can someone help me here in deciding what I should do?

Answer
No offence but that Mxchick doesn't know what she's talking about, don't listen to her. You WILL want a Crf150r and if you can find a bigwheel version, go for it. It is perfect for your size and you can race multiple classes in Mx with it.

You will have lots of fun with it and not struggle to get on it like the 125 2 stroke MXCHICK recommended..Trust me, wait a year or two riding the Crf150r and then get a Crf250r. Skip the 125s, they are hard to ride on trails, they are tall and hard to get up on, and they lack power for the size of the bike, AND they will never keep up on an MX track with 4 strokes unless James Bubba Stewart is riding it..CRF150R is the way to go kid, Good Luck.

Would like to buy a beach cruiser style bike to ride around town with the kids.?

I would like a very lightweight frame because I am planning on pulling a trailer/stroller behind it with a two year old in it. I don't plan on going up steep grades but I am sure some slight ones will be on the routes. I have found one bike at Wal-Mart but I know I won't be getting the lightweight frame. It's the Schwinn Beach Cruiser. What would you suggest?

Answer
Otis

NO! It is absolutely the wrong bike for your needs! A cruiser is a heavy bike, designed for very short rides on flat ground. You need a multi gear bike, light weight, and able to meet the various terrains and road conditions that you may meet while towing a trailer!

Your best choice is a hybrid or cross bike. They will provide the upright sitting position, light frame, wider smooth road tires, and gearing that you need to meet your riding conditions. I would get a better quality of bike, the strains you will be placing on your new ride will quickly impact the cheap bikes from a retail store like walmart. Go to a proper bike shop or buy a used hybrid from Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, or Giant. BE SURE to know your frame size!

Do I really have to spend that kind of money on a bike?

Emmi

I decided to get a bike to commute to work. I live very close now (less than 2 miles) and would like to bike instead of walk. Doing some research leads me to believe that I have to spend about 300 to 400 dollars on a bike.
Any thoughts on that?
I would like a bike with some gears, but nothing fancy.
Thanks for the input.

Answer
Just like $150 basketball shoes don't make you able to slam dunk; a $1000 bike will not make you Lance Armstrong. There is a happy medium of bike quality and price. Walmart and Target don't have anyone that is skilled in bike assembly, just a high school kid that can kinda follow directions when he feels like it, when he's not too pissed off at his girlfriend. Try Performance bike, its a chain bike store that has qualified mechanics that put your bike together, they have much better bikes overall and yes you will spend more on a bike you will have something that will stay in adjustment. Remember you are trusting your life to the bike, brakes, steering etc are critical components, especially if you are going to bike to work a few days a week. Performance has lifetime tuneups on their bikes so you get the long term value compared to the discount store.

RIDEURBAN!! What do you think about the Scott Voltage yz 0.2 vs Ns metropolis 2/3? ?

Which is better at dirt/street? I want a bike that I can TRUST on the biggest jumps, although I will mainly be on the street. I just don't want it braking down on me at the jump park. It has some big jumps!! And do you think the trek ticket would be a better option? What about the STP. So between the ns metropolis, Scott voltage yz 0.2, trek ticket, and STP. I just want to know what these bikes are better at, jump/street. And how big of jumps? Like I said, my jump park have big jumps, and I want a bike I can trust. ALSO, my son (14) is using his diamondback sorrento ( double wall front and rear rims, and all heat treated aluminum frame) to do wheelies. I hate to tell him, by will this brake his bike? Thanks dude!!! I hope you can help me here!!!

Answer
Looking at this Voltage, I'd pick the Diamondback over it, honestly. Aluminum with a yet-slacker head angle and a still-cheaper fork...that could spell bad news. The Circus 20mm fork on the Diamondback is a nice touch, esp at that price level. I ride expensive forks now, so I haven't kept up with RST or X-Fusion, but both of those are low entry level forks (or that's usually spec'd, anyway) and both had horrendous failure rates when they first came into the market. Maybe they've improved them, but without reading people's reviews online, I'm not sure I could recommend RST at all. It's an expensive upgrade, so trying to get the fork you want on a new bike makes much more sense. I don't know anyone with this Scott, but I do know a guy with the Voltage FR full suspension and he's happy with it...totally different bike, of course.

I'm not sure what Trek was after with the Ticket. It's a good bike and it's not a bad deal. Trek is really good about their warranty (they're even good about their jump bikes...can't say that for all companies). It has the usual jump angles but they put long chainstays on it. So-so for jumps, good for trail, but it'll make manuals and rear wheel stuff on street much more difficult. I'm thinking they intended this more for dirt only...jumps and swoopy all-mountain trails. It does have the ISCG guard mount - nice if you want to mount a guide or a good bash setup. Actually, that's a good feature for street riding, but again those long chainstays will be a little frustrating if you're just learning those skills. Finding a good durable bash setup with bmx cranks and gears is hard, so if that's an important consideration then the ISCG mount is the way to go, or else using 4-bolt cranks with the bmx bottom bracket...then you could mount a good thick Raceface bash along with a chainring of your choice. Bashes don't really matter for dirt jumping.

You can tear up a bike on 3' jumps just as well as you can on 12' jumps, so....most of these will handle it ok anyway. Even the bombproof ones sometimes come out with bent handlebars, frame tweaks, or hub/wheel issues if they get abandoned in the air. Cheaper stuff is more likely to fail, of course...but are you likely to get into a situation where you've got 20' of air under you? If not, most are fine. Nose cases and such, that matters more...which is why people like steel frames. Aluminum can make a strong jump frame when they over-engineered, but when it goes, it goes, and you probably won't get a warning beforehand. There's a weight savings (which lessens as you spend more on high end steel frames), but most are willing to forego that for the security and longevity of steel. The NS frame I use most now weighs about 5lb. Most steel frames are around 6 and the cheapest jet up to 8 pounds. These types of aluminum frames will be around 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 pounds, depending.

That Sorrento frame will handle more than you'd think, but the wheels and fork....definitely not for rough play at all. When I first started into this, I beefed up a cheap Trek bare bones aluminum xc hardtail. I'm glad it didn't break, because I didn't know then what I know now. It saw way more impact and abuse than it ever should have...I lucked out with an ovalized head tube and a few dents before moving up to a proper frame. Even with better wheels on the Sorrento, I'd still make sure your son understands its limitations & the costs of failure (both in dollars and blood loss....). There are good videos on youtube that show kids nose casing cheaper xc bikes from smallish dirt jumps...with the resulting "crack!" sound and two pieces of bike frame and a lot of wailing. Might do him well to view one of those videos. lol. For that bike, just keep it small and keep it occasional, but wheelies and knocking around are just fine.

For street-specific, the geo steepens a bit (twitchy = more nimble, esp for front wheel maneuvers) and the bb height might rise (good for trials moves/rear wheel balance, and extra clearance)...and again, short chainstays. Those same short chainstays are not as good for the trails - they compromise several aspects of trail geometry, esp for those that don't have good handling skills in corners and loose soil. These details matter, but within the same category of bicycle it gets to be splitting hairs somewhat, and everyone has their preferences/abilities, too.

And you're welcome! I don't mind helping and typing, especially since I know that not many people really know this kind of riding and the bikes, and it's a whole different world in many ways. I was lucky that I had some great riders help me learn...and still I got hurt a few times anyway. lol

What are my best options for toting three kids around with my bike?

Is there a trailer for 3 kids? Would it be ok to have a "trail-a-bike" type option then connect a trailer to that? Or get a child seat plus the trailer? Kids are 4 mos, 2.5 yrs, and 5 yrs old.. The 5 yr old can ride a bike, but very slowly and not very far.. Thanks!

Answer
You have a few option, although I agree with those who mention 4 mos may be a little young for any kind of biking. The only way I would bike with infants is if I can either carry them very close to me, or if I can strap them into a reclined seat where they don't have to fully support their head while going over bumps etc.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Bend,OR&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.460237,67.763672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bend,+Deschutes,+Oregon&ll=44.05157,-121.315155&spn=0.28771,0.529404&t=h&z=11 Front mounted seat.

In Denmark they often ride with the youngest in a front basket or cargo bay laying down in blankets.

I've tried my kids in trailers at 9 mos and found it didn't work for me with any of them because I couldn't watch how they were doing and couldn't attend to their needs at all without stopping, dismounting etc. AND until over a year they didn't do well enough with head control. The trailers actually ride fairly jouncy and bumpy because the kids are sitting right on top of the wheels.

Moving on....

I have seen people do the tag along and the trailer, but for regular use it seems to long and unwieldy to me.

I'd go the cargo bike / long tail route: Madsen Cycles has a model that seats 4 with seat belts (takes the optional extra seat to get to 4 - standard is 2) http://www.madsencycles.com/

looking to make a bike trailer my son can sit in while i ride my bike please help me any ideas?

Answer
Consider the makeup of the frame. Road bikes can be found with different frame materials. Steel is the cheapest frame material, but aluminum offers a lighter frame. Consider your riding goals and habits. If you cruise around the neighborhood, the steel-framed bike may be your most economical choice. If youâre logging long miles, lighter aluminum frames may be better.â¨The best cheap road bikes include models of Trek, Schwinn, Tomasso, and Raleigh.
