What to do on a sleepover with my 4 year old cousin?

I am a 14 year old girl, and my little cousin is 4 years old, and she's also a girl. It's 4pm now, and I have no idea how i'm supposed to entertain her until tomorrow morning. Things we could do that will take up time? And by the way, her attention span is like 2 seconds.

Answer
I find that keeping them active is always best, that way it tires them out easier. Start off with a couple of games - tag, hide and seek, bike rides, follow the leader, magic tricks, board games, drawing.. really depends on what she enjoys - play dressup, make up a dance, little skit (with some of her favourite dolls, puppets) so you guys could preform later..Then after dinner I'd let the kids watch a movie or tv. Any cartoons or if theres something good on TV like disney or nick junior. By 9 - 10 she'll be tired and you could always read her a book before putting her to bed. Good luck! :)

What to get my 7 year old nephew for christmas?

BingoBangg

He loves sports. I want to get him something good but I have no idea what kids at that age want....what about my almost 4 year old neice

Answer
My 7 year old is into sports, he likes basketballs, footballs, bikes, skateboards. As for 4 year old girls, Have you thought about educational games? Like Leapster...I bought one for my niece, she's 4 and she is learning how to read. They have it in pink for girls, and it's portable, for long road trips!!! There are also many leapster products for the 7 year old also.

How do I install training wheels around a rear derailleur on a 20" bike?

Just purchased Wald training wheels for kids bike (16" to 26"). The right side has a gear derailleur on it, which extends further than the axle. I can't put the training wheel bar on the axle since I don't have clearance.

Can this axle be extended out farther somehow?

Answer
There are better ways to learn how to ride a bike. Remove the pedals and lower the saddle so they can flat foot on the ground and push them self around and learn to steer. Then try coasting down a small slop with the feet down and then lifting the feet. Next replace the pedals and gradually raise the saddle.

When did your kids start riding their bikes without training wheels?

Q. it's official, my little Sarah is riding her bike with OUT training wheels! So exciting!! She is 4 years old, and her twin sister won't hardly budge to get on a bike! Her good big brother took her out and taught her and then her other older brother and daddy helped! They have been doing this since friday afternoon. She's a pro!

when did your start riding without training wheels? Who taught them?

Answer
4 to 5...

Both of my daughters learned from my father... He ran beside them holding the back of the bike slowly adjusting the training wheels until they weren't using them..

My son taught himself... My father let him help put together a swing set teaching him how to use tools... The next day I went out on the back porch to call him in for lunch, I found his training wheels and a crescent wrench... I started down the porch steps to look for him when I was nearly knocked down as my speedster zoomed by doing great... He yelled "Mom no training wheels!!!!" as he zoomed off for another lap around the backyard... LOL

The kids are 4 and 7. I have tried to find reviews of campgrounds in New England/New York/New Jersey but have not found any good sites. Most have so few reviews I cannot get a good comparison. I would like to find a campground with lots of things we can do (biking swimming playgrounds etc) that is very family friendly and possibly has some inexpensive activities in the area such as wineries, kid museums or outdoor adventures.

Answer
Catskills State Park in NY is only 2 1/2 hours from Hartford. It's GORGEOUS and there's a lot to do in the area. We love Woodstock (no hippies now). There are some wineries (not at the level of California, but nice) and plenty of outdoor activities. As far as family friendly - you can't get more family friendly. Families go there every year in the summer. There are some links below that might help-

Is it ever too late to teach our children about saving money?

This is a simple system that can be started at any time with your kids. It's a great idea to have everyone sit down a couple times a year and give an overview of their "investments." Since banks don't tend to use bank books any longer, you can have children keep track in an Investment binder that you create. It helps reinforce to the children how important their savings is and validates their hard work at keeping their hands off that money.

Answer
Step1Find a bank where your child wants to bank. Consider online banks as well, as your child will probably be more comfortable with these institutions and more excited to save. Open their account(s) and name the 2 sections--the first should be "Long Term" and the second should be "Savings."
Step2Every time that a child receives money, no matter the amount, talk to them about breaking the money into thirds.
Step3The first third is to go into the account they label "Long Term." This is money that they will be saving for college or post-secondary life.
Step4The second third is to go into the account they label "Savings." This is the money that they will use for items that will require larger sums--perhaps a new bike or name brand clothing--anything that will require pooling money over time. Have them note what they paid for when they take money out of this account.
Step5The third amount is "Now" money. They can do whatever they wish with it. Spend it, save it--whatever they desire. Leave it totally up to them. That freedom will make the initial feeling of loss (of the first two-thirds of their money) feel less constricting.
Step6Have them keep track of all 3 amounts in their section of the Investment binder. This will help them see: that even small amounts are important as they grow into larger ones; that they are building towards their long-term future while taking care of short-term desires and today's "I need it" item; and that keeping track of the "Now" money spent will encourage your kids to see what they've spent over time. This can be a real eye opener. Just as seeing what they spent their "Savings" money on--they can later review the purchase and talk about whether it was worthwhile, in hindsight.

Being open about money will mean that your kids may ask you about your money and what you're doing with it. It's an opportunity to have discussions that outline what type of money responsibilities they will have when they are adults.

In my opinion kids and young teens deal with so much in this generation. Sometimes it's almost unbelievable what some of them go through. Do you think the amount of pressure and/or stress on younger people has grown over the years? Your opinion?

Answer
i love this question so much! i grew up back in the nineties. And when i reflect on my childhood, i just smile. Life was so much more simpler! I could just ride on my bike everywhere and be home to watch Mr. Roger's on tv at 3. We had a movie store in town and a candy store! My grandma mostly watched me.

Now life is GO GO GO! People are stressed, anxious, angry, depressed. It shows through our television and just our whole lifestyle. The shows aren't fun for kids anymore, everything has to be educational! I believe that kids should grow up with fun not a strict schedule! I miss the nineties! The eighties were a fun time, too as my parents say.

This is only coming from a kid, but i hope you get what i mean. I'm 15 now but i feel like people my age can probably answer this question the best. i want life to slow down a bit. less stress, less worries, more fun. you only live once!

god bless,

What are different kinds of awards to give kids on the motocross team I coach?

Just wonde

I am coaching a team for kids from 10-15 years old and want to give out awards at the end of the season...like MVP. What are some other awards I could give out?
I do plan to have an award for every racer

Answer
Get in touch with the local importers who deal with bike stuff. Where I one such is called monza imports and ask for some freebies. Also local bike shops and get stickers and odds and ends that don't cost much and do up some grab bags so all the kids can have one.

Don't just give out 'most improved' and such as while it is great to be achieving I find sometimes this only focusses on one or two riders and they get the pats on the back the whole way through. Did anyone have a big off in training as you could give out a 'bent handlebars award' One of the clubs I am involved with actually has this and it really is a set of bent handlebars. So make a few fun awards like this as well.

A lot of coaches I know get the kids to balance on their bikes and try to have a slow race. Those with good balance can stay upright with the bike basically not moving for ages. See who is best at this and give them an award. So you could make the end of year a fun things as well. Have a race where they have to start by putting their boots on before running to their bike and doing a lap. Again you can award a prize for it. You can do a tag team race where you put the riders in groups spreading the ability out and making sure each group has a 50cc bike to slow them down. See who gets over the finish line first with each member of the group doing a lap.

This way the day is fun and the kids go home, some with real achievement awards and others with just a fun award.

My daughters 12 inch bicycle has a flat tire though i could not locate the puncture. How do i get it fixed? Taking the wheel out is itself a challenge on those bikes. Can someone help or have somilar experience?

Answer
This is a pretty good demonstration on how to fix a bike flat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvuKlEnHVLc&feature=related

You will need tire levers, a patch kit or a new inner tube
Taking the wheel out isn't bad you just need a wrench an adjustable one is OK and loosen the two outer nuts on the axle. If it's a rear wheel with a coaster brake you also need a screwdriver to free it from the frame, and of course move the chain off the wheel.
To find the puncture, I put a little air in the tube and then put the tube in a bucket of water and see where the bubbles are coming from. If the leak is right on the seam you probably need a new tube as I haven't had much luck with patches applied to seam leaks. Once you see whats wrong with the tube look CAREFULLY to see what caused it whether broken glass, a thorn or even a spoke poking out too far. Take care of the cause and reinstall the inner tube.

It really isn't too hard. Those tires should come off pretty easily. If all else fails take it to a bike shop, the fix should be pretty cheap.

What bike should I get for my kid?

Ben

This morning I ran over my kids bicycle when I backed out of the driveway. I was thinking about getting him a walmart junk bike but I figured that maybe I should just go out and get him a good one instead. Are there any good aluminum framed BMX bikes for 7 year old kids? His destroyed bike is an 18" walmart Mongoose ship anchor.

Answer
Bike shops are usually the best place to get an entry level bike for any age. Sure the price will be more than a department store, but you will be getting a suitable vehicle as opposed to a disposable toy.

Childrenâs bikes are usually cheep and disposable no matter what. Some BMX companies (freestyle & race) have invested some money into making childrenâs bikes more reliable for performance. Childrenâs mountain bikes have come a long way as well. Expect these bikes to be more expensive than normal childrenâs bikes.

Take him to a bike shop and hook him up with whatever he likes that fits him. At 7 years old a bike is usually a bike. If you have money, buy it. If you donât find something in your price range at the bike shop, check out craigslist. Hook up with a few sellers that are selling something similar to the bike you found at the bike shop. Do some test riding, and low ball the best seller with cash.

If you donât know anything about bikes, take the craigslist bike back to the shop for a solid once over.

I hope this helped!

I live in a small town in Kansas and the city came in and took everything that I owned and tossed it away like trash, I had 3 pickup trailers full of iron to take to scrap yard one was hooked up to my pickup, they took my push mowers, weed eaters, iron racks full of new metal, 2 tire racks full of new and used tires, pickup tool boxes with tools, my cutting torch and cart, rotor tillers, and riding lawn mowers, trash can cart, lawn and garden tools, log splitter, pull camper used for storage, tool shed, oilfield tools and pumps, fencing and poles, firewood, wood burning heater for my house, fuel tank, ladder for shop, row boat no motor on it and fishing gear, tail gate for my truck, if it was outside they took, plus wifes garden hose, and my kids bikes, an mini bike, took my fence down and drove in the yard with big trucks and tractors, 6 sheets of new 1/4 inch steel 2'by6',

Answer
This doesn't happen without notifying you.

I'm sure the town has warned you several times of a thing such as a blight ordinance, and that if you didn't clean it up, they would.

You would have had plenty of time to haul those trailers to the scrap yard to turn them. Among other things.

what does insurance usually cost

Answer
start with something small a Honada CB125R OR a Suzuki or Kawi 250. My daughter has the 125 and has had it up to highway speeds (110 kph). I'm a little shorter and much fatter than you and I've ridden it. It fit me fine but I had to flog it a bit compared to my 600, but as a good starter bike or a quick city commute bike its a good one.

We bought my grandson a dirt bike and I was wondering if anyone has ever tranported one on the back of the car on one of those platform things that you put in the trailer hitch?

The trailer hitch is the strongest type of on car transport. Ask this question in Cars & Transportation -- Motorcycles for more experienced answers -- this is actually the section for Bicycles.
Merry Christmas.

What willa cop do if he sees me riding a dirt bike on the street?

John

I really want to get a dirt bike. ever since i was a kid ive been obsessed with motorcycles. i asked for it for Christmas when i was like 12 and my parents didn't get it for me. now im 14 and i still really want one. One of my friends from school has a quad and people on his block have dirt bikes and quads to. He always puts videos on intagram of them racing down the street and it makes me want one even more. So i was just wondering if a cop will really do anything if he sees a 14 year old kid riding a dirt bike not speeding down the road. Will he just look the other way? I live in New York BTW
By new york i mean long island

Answer
He'll wave hand at you! LOL. Seriously, he will either arrest you or put your bike in the cop car trunk or maybe both. Or if he's a "GOOD" cop than he'll most likely give you a warning and escort you to your house and have a chat with your parents. The chat more than likely will not be about weather or who sells the best donuts though!

How do you teach a kid to ride a bike with no training wheels and can't balance that great?

Brown Suga

My niece is five and very clumsy and she just got a bike for Christmas with no training wheels on it. What the best way to teach her to ride it? Do I start with balance without her riding the bike first or what? Thanks!

Answer
Hold the bike and run with them while they ride the bikee. After a few rounds of that then try letting go only if you think they can do it by themselves. Try to practice on a flat surface and have grass on on side so that if they fall they have a 50% chance on falling on grass.

What's a good way to teach a child to ride a bike?

Sit'nTeach

I am a nanny and am working with a set of parents who really think it's time their daughter ride her bike without training wheels. She's definitely physically ready and has good balance, etc., but doesn't really seem confident in herself and won't concentrate. If we stop taking her out she gets upset because then she can't get her brand new purple bike, but if we do take her out, she purposely wobbles the bike. We've tried talking to her and we hold onto the back of the seat while she rides. Are there any other tips you could offer? Nothing mean and nasty about pushing the kid--the parents have decided on this approach with the child (and the mom's a child psychologist so she knows what she's doing), I just need to take her outside every day and "practice" until she gets it... Any suggestions?

Answer
We spent a great deal of time trying to teach our son to ride his bike. Riding on grass helped quite a lot, as did spending a lot of time running along holding the seat while he got used to balancing and pedaling and steering at the same time. We also found practicing for short periods often helped keep everyone from getting too frustrated. The reality is most kids won't do it until they are ready emotionally - the physical readiness usually comes long before the emotional readiness. Good luck!

I need advice on purchasing a quality bike for an eight year old girl. One who loves to ride. She is moving up from her twenty inch bike. Any suggestions on twenty-four inch wheel bikeshop bike that is under $180? Or on a department store/sporting goods store bike that is of the same quality as bike shop bike.Would prefer the cruiser type bike to the mountain bike type, but quality level and reliabilty are most important factors. Thanks for the help!

Answer
Excellent opportunity to buy a lightly used bike. Kids don't normally fit this size bike for more than 2 years. By the time they turn 10-11 yrs old, they will be in a 26 inch wheeled bike (unless they are short). With your budget, you will get a better bike too. A decent bike shop quality bike will be over 200US.

Regarding the first answer being too young for a 24? My boys were on very comfortably on 24" wheels at 7 yrs old. They looked like circus clowns on toy bikes when they tried to ride 20" wheeled bikes at that age (other than BMX).....but I would agree that a fitting would be in order, or at least go shopping with the kids height/proportions at hand so you know what to get.

Would like to buy a beach cruiser style bike to ride around town with the kids.?

Otis

I would like a very lightweight frame because I am planning on pulling a trailer/stroller behind it with a two year old in it. I don't plan on going up steep grades but I am sure some slight ones will be on the routes. I have found one bike at Wal-Mart but I know I won't be getting the lightweight frame. It's the Schwinn Beach Cruiser. What would you suggest?

Answer
Otis

NO! It is absolutely the wrong bike for your needs! A cruiser is a heavy bike, designed for very short rides on flat ground. You need a multi gear bike, light weight, and able to meet the various terrains and road conditions that you may meet while towing a trailer!

Your best choice is a hybrid or cross bike. They will provide the upright sitting position, light frame, wider smooth road tires, and gearing that you need to meet your riding conditions. I would get a better quality of bike, the strains you will be placing on your new ride will quickly impact the cheap bikes from a retail store like walmart. Go to a proper bike shop or buy a used hybrid from Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, or Giant. BE SURE to know your frame size!

Is there an infant seat system for bike trailers?

best kids bike 5 year old image

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
Most bike systems are designed for babies 9 months and over. It's an issue of being able to hold their heads up enough to prevent the sort of jostling that biking creates. Even a carseat in a bike trailer, isn't secure enough to hold them steady, especially not in the case of a spill or accident. I also wanted something for our five month old to use with our bikes in the spring, but no such luck. Now she's 16 months, and we've gotten her a bike seat.

I think maybe just buy them a bike trailer and let them decide what they are going to do to. It might've been a risk you and your husband were willing to take, but each parent should decide for themselves.

Good luck!

Has anyone yet designed an infant seat for bike trailers?

Answer
@Old hippie, the infant car seat could be secured to the bike trailer and have it rear facing. In the car, it needs to be reclined no more than 45 degrees, but a parent could recline it more than this on a bike trailer to keep their newborns airway open and to prevent their child's head to their chest (especially going uphill)- more at 60 and 80 degrees from vertical on a bike. Remember that if the seat is installed in the car, it needs to be no more than 45 degrees.

This is because they aren't going to use the seat to withstand crash forces- just to secure the child for the ride.

Here is an article about the American Academy of Pediatric policy regarding bike trailers. They recommend that, "...adults should carry only children 12 months or older and weighing less than 40 pounds."

These are just recommendations and a parent can take what they want from what the AAP says. Because I don't agree with all policy decisions by the AAP.

Instead of having the child ride in the back with a jury-rigged infant car seat why not wear the baby with a wrap? There is the Moby Wrap or the Ergo carrier.

*Sigh* Many people haven't lived or visited Cambodia. You would never know how people ride on motorcyles and their bikes with their infants. That being said, I'm not sure if it is safe though. I just haven't heard about children dying in bike trailers.

Here is an article about why bike trailers may not be as dangerous as people think: http://www.mnn.com/family/protection-safety/blogs/bike-trailers-child-safety-and-the-medias-fear-
agenda

Whoops! Forgot to put the AAP article in: http://aapnews.aappublications.org/content/30/7/18.6.full

Why all the thumbs down? I haven't ever heard of many children getting killed being hit by a vehicle in a bike trailer. In contrast, I have heard plenty of children getting killed while in a crash being *in* the vehicle. Statistics just don't lie.

I'm all for safety, but I just don't understand by these trailers are just deemed as so dangerous. What magically happens when a child is 12 months old? If the car seat can be tightly tied down in the trailer, I just don't see how that would be any different.

Where can I find some good sizing guides for kid's road bikes?

best store for kids bikes image

K_Alejandr

I'm doing some research for a friend who wants to buy a bike online (there are no stores nearby that stock kid's bikes so he can't try one out) for his son.

I'd like to find a guide that includes some information regarding height, inseam and bike dimensions/geometry.

If there's anything that explains the relationships to how the physique relates to the geometry of a bike, that would probably be helpful too, even if it's not specific to kids.

Thanks!
If you read the question, you will note that I'm not asking for help sizing a bike to a specific kid. For starters, the guy has 3 kids.

I am looking for guides. Mostly because I don't want to just take someone's word for it, I want to understand WHY a specific size of bike matches a specific size of kid and how it all fits together.

The Sheldon Brown has been excellent as always.

Anything else out there?

How do you remove a valve stem from a bycicle tire?

purplelynn

I don't have the tool that removes the valve stem. Is there something else I can use? I am replacing the tubes in my kids bikes and the box says if the valve stem leaks then take it out and clean it and put it back but I can't get the blasted thing out. Grrr. Can someone help with this.

Answer
You're looking for a valve core remover. They're available at any auto parts store.

FWIW, tubes are cheap, and in 40 years of serious riding, I've never had a valve core leak. Replace the tube. Go to a bike shop or order online from Performance or Nashbar. If you're getting your tubes from Wallyworld or Targét, that could be the problem.
-------
Note to Gerry: Slime tubes will seal small leaks, but eventually will seal the valve as well, making it impossible to pump air in the tire. Tried that once, never again.

What do kids aged 3-10 like and dislike?

I am making a client profile for my Product Design class but I have kinda run out of ideas as to what kids aged 3-10 (both boys and girls) will like and dislike. It's meant to be things like animals, activities, colours, stuff like that. Thanks in advance xx

Answer
It all depends on their personal preference. Not all kids like the same things. However, some things that my kids like are:

3 & 4 year old male

Animals- They have liked all animals that they have came in contact with so far. Some of their favorites are dogs, cats, elephants, worms and bugs.

Activities- They like to play with almost any toys including cars, blocks, dolls, guns, balls and any other toy. They like to fingerpaint, color, cut and glue things, make playdough and play with it, paint toast, draw, playing in dirt, skating, riding bikes, do puzzles, blow bubbles, draw with chalk, play sports, sing, play on swing sets and in sand boxes, play in/with water, dance and listen to music. They like to pretend play like pretending to be cops and robbers, doctors, teachers, mommy and daddy and lots of other things.

Colours- They like all different colors especially bright colors.

Girls in that age group that I have been around seem to like the same things with a few exceptions maybe.

5-6 old boys

I've only been around 1 boy of that age so far. He liked the same things that the 3 & 4 year old do. He also liked going for walks in the mountains and woods, playing with action figures.

5-6 year old girls

A lot of the same things as above unless they are really girly. Girly girls like playing with barbies and other dolls, playing with pretend makeup and nail polish, dressing up as princesses and other people. They also like doing some of the things mentioned above like playing with bubbles, jump ropes, playing with toys, reading, music, dancing and playing house, teachers and doctors.

7-10 year old

I don't know a lot about kids this age but I do have two family members within this age range. They like to do the activities mentioned above but would rather play cops and robbers, fire fighters, police officers or cowboys and indians instead of pretending to be teachers and doctors. They like to go on nature walks, play in the dirt, wrestle, play on swing sets, play video games, watch tv, play with friends, race and many more things. The animals and colours they like depend on personal preference as it does with every age. Young kids tend to like bright colors though.

What bike should I get for my kid?

best kids first bicycle on best sellers the new york times best sellers children s books ...

I hope this helped!

water pipes freeze, will my idea work...?

todd5524

I rent a half shabby apartment, and the water pipes freeze when it's really cold. I thought about actually buying some of those long foam insulators ( the ones they use on kids bicycle handlebars ) and just work them around the pipes in the basement. I just thought it would be so much easier to apply than regular insulation that gets wet from condensation etc. would it work ?

Answer
It would most likely work, but you have to make sure the hole in the middle of the insulation is the same size as the outer diameter of the pipe. If there is space between the insulation and the pipe, that air will still drop, and potentially allow your pipes to freeze, inside the insulation. Your best bet is to buy the 6' lengths of insulation, at your local hardware store. There are different types, one is scored with a precut line, that you split open, and install around the pipe. This type requires that you use an additional tape to wrap the insulation. The other type is split, with adhesive applied to the edges. Upon installing it on the pipe, you peel the cellophane protector, and the glue from both edges, keeps the insulation in place. These come in different sizes, for different types of pipe. Make sure you buy the correct type for the pipe that you have. When installing this type insulation, cut angles, so you can completely cover all the pipe. Insulating the pipes, and not the joints, will increase the chance of a rupture at the exposed joints. Good luck to you, and stay warm!

Why is there such a big price difference between a Target bike for $100 vs the $600+ bikes at the bike store?

I want to get a bike to get some exercise everyday and burn some calories and have a little fun riding around while I am doing it. Do I really need to spend $600+ dollars on a bike at a bike a store or can a $100 dollar Target/Walmart bike do the trick?

Also, what kid a bike should I get? Mountain, 12 speed, etc?

Answer
There are a number of differences between "department store" bikes and bike shop bikes. I am an avid mountain biker so this mostly relates to mountain bikes, but the principals apply to both on and off-road bikes. (I bought a relatively cheap bike shop bike about 18 months ago, a Mongoose Wing Comp ($450) with mid-range componentry but with bad rims; I have already replaced it with a Jamis Dakar XC Comp ($1,800). The Mongoose has a decent frame, but the componentry just won't hold up; I am a proponent of saving your money and buying a better bike; you will be much happier and you won't get stranded on a trail because of sub-standart equipment)
First, the frames are not designed to be ridden the same; on all dpt. store bikes, there is a sticker that will warn you that this bike is not made for jumping or competitive riding; the metal is much cheaper and often much heavier, more brittle, welds are not as good, the derailleru hangers are not replacable (MTB) which is extremely important when you start doing more off-road riding.
Second, the rims will more than likely be single-walled or extremely cheap double-walled that will not stand up to any abuse on an off-road trail. On my Mongoose mentioned above, I had to replace both rims within 4 weeks of buying the bike. The hubs will also be generally "recreational" and will fall apart after 3-4 months, if the rims last that long.
Third, the derailleurs will be bottom-of-the-line. They will more than likely need constant adjustment and maintenance. They also are much slower when shifting than the more expensive set-ups.
Another really weak point is the handlebars; they don't use a very expensive component and I have seen several broken handlebars in the past. This can be extremely dangerous and can cause you to really injur yourself.
Lastly (not really, but I'm talking too much), the dept. store bikes will all be one size and that might or might not fit you or your needs.
Bottom line, the department store bikes will work fine for you if you don't plan to do any serious off-road riding (jumping, rocks, downhill, etc.) or if you don't plan on riding every day. If you must buy a department-store bike, make sure you are buying something with Shimano "Tourney" or "Altus" deraillerus; the low-end SRAM or the Falcon that I have seen are not going to last and will require constant maintenance and adjustment; you won't be happy. Also, don't ride the bike harder than it was designed to be ridden. There are several bikes in the $400-$700 range made by Jamis and Trek. Also, since it is nearing the end of a model year, you should be able to find some 2007 models at discounted prices, sometimes as much as 25%. If you can find $400 to $500, then you will have some luck, you just have to look. Here are some websites that you might want to look at. BEFORE you buy anything, RIDE IT!!! Don't let anyone sell you a bike that they are not willing to let you at least buzz around the parking lot. Good luck and happy riding!!!

What can kids do to help out the environment and their community if they don't live in a neighborhood?

STEVE

If the kids are around 12-14 what is the best jobs that they can do to help out in their community and environment if we don't live in or near a neighborhood?

Answer
You mean you live on a farm? You have no neighbors at all? The nearest town is miles away? And you are home schooled and therefore never interact with other kids?

I suspect not.

NetAid has programs specifically for students in North America who want to help in the developing world. NetAid is now a part of MeryCorps
http://www.netaid.org
Many kids get involved with NetAid as individuals, then start a group at school to get other kids involved.

TakingIT Global is another resource for young people in the USA who want to do something to affect the situation positively in developing countries
www.takingitglobal.org/

http://www.change.org can help you know what causes are out there and how you can get involved with them.

You can also type in your city or zip code into:
VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org
Idealist, http://www.idealist.org
CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com
Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org
http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/
ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

You can also look for ways to change your own family's practices regarding the environment: do you compost? do you have a garden? do you use your own cloth bags when you go to the grocery or other shopping instead of paper or plastic? have you replaced some of your light bulbs with energy-saving ones? do you put on a sweater when you are cold instead of turning up the heat? do you turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth? do you ride your bike or walk or take mass transit instead of always riding in a car? do you turn off the TV when you aren't watching it? do you unplug things when they are not in use?

How good is Trek 800 bike for adult just to ride around for recreation?

best kids bikes 24 image

4Rd

I have the one from 1995 or 1996, and my girl friend keep telling me to "get rid of it" and "buy a new one". Then she flashes off her new Trek bike she just bought last year.

I do not see why I should get rid of my bike and buy a new one when I still enjoy my bike. It looks quite new as I have not ridden that much. She say its for kid's bike size 26" tire....

Should I listen to her ?

Answer
Your girlfriend doesn't know what she's talking about. Back in '96 that bike sold for $294.99. Not exactly cheap for 14 years ago. If you like it - ride it - enjoy it. Kid's bike tires run in the 12" 16" & 24" sizes. Once into 26" wheels, bikes are measured by frame size & will fit anyone from 5' tall to 6' 6" tall.

How much to sell a bike for at yard sale?

UHHHHHHHH

My bike is a Cignal Ozark 24, it was originally about 200 dollars in 1999. It is a kids frame (8.5in?) and would probably fit a kid around 4ft tall. its in good condition, i just need to clean it, there is no damage.

Answer
50 bucks maybe but id check ebay for same thing first most bikes about 20 bucks or question is do you want to get rid of the junk or sell it

What age do kids typically start to learn to ride a bike?

Mikey's Mo

Sorry for such a silly question, but I'm just not sure.

I have a new toddler bike with training wheels for my niece. She is 2 now (3 in September). I'm not sure if she'll be able to start riding this summer, or if I should wait until her birthday or Christmas to give her the bike so she can ride next summer. Or, is 3 even too young?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
She can probably start riding now, depending on the size of the bike. You want a bike that is correctly sized. A child will go through several bikes. There is not a one size fits all. My kids are on their fourth set of bikes and they are 8 & 9. They began riding at 2 1/2. One was riding without training wheels at 3 1/2 and the other at 4 1/2.

I was without training wheels at 3 1/2 too.

It's easier when they are young. They have less of a fear. Only with age do we develop fear.

I would like to start bike riding to shed some baby weight what are the best bike trailer/bike combos?

Yeah Momma

i need a bike and want to buy a bike trailer, what type of bike should be used?

Answer
- how much do you want to/can you spend?
- what kind of trailer - cargo or kid?
- how long and where do you want to ride (urban/country, flat/hilly/mountainous)?
- commuting or sports/training?
- what's your weight - and do you do any kind of sports?
- are you fixed on a bike/trailer combo, or would a (two or three wheeled) bakfiets be a practical alternative?

Unless you want to lay down at least 4k$/â¬, there's no sense in talking about 'best'. You can start thinking about 'good' (enough for everyday use) with 2k$/⬠and either the willingness to learn basic maintenance or a friendly LBS within reach.

As a short guide to what I'd consider best (I'll just throw in a few buzzwords, use google or come back here if you want to know more):
- steel frame, touring geometry, Rohloff dropouts
- Rohloff internal geared rear hub
- SON front hub generator
- Edelux front bike light, b&m rear light
- Magura hydraulic disc brakes
- disc brake rims, Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires in 26x2.00, DD stainless spokes
- Brooks leather saddle
- closed chain box, e.g. Hebie Chainglider

That'll cut down the yearly maintenance to the gear oil change and regular inspection (and occasional exchange) of brake pads and chain.

- Weber hitch
- brand trailer - for kids, Chariot or Croozer, for cargo, Roland or Carry Freedom

How do I keep my kids bike chain from always coming off?

Dyslexia o

The bike is new only a couple months old,I have no tools and the neighbor is always putting it back on. Is their a way to keep it on?
Its a cheap walmart bike.

Answer
Try to take it back to WalMart and see if they can fix it. If not, get your money back. The rear wheel needs to be straight so that the cog is aligned with the chain ring and tensioned tight enough to hold the chain in place but not so tight as to damage the chain.

Without tools, you can't fix this yourself.

How do I stop kids/teens from biking through my yard?

lilrefa18

Very kid friendly neighborhood, lots of sidewalks, parks, etc. My house backs up to a street that has an adjacent sidewalk. Recently, teens and kids have started biking through my yard to get to the road/sidewalk, even though the bike path and trails are less than 1/5 mile away. They're starting to ruin my yard, and fences aren't allowed due to HOA regulations. How do I deal with this? I was thinking about putting down nails, but that can mess up my lawnmower. Ideas? Help!

Answer
Contact the HOA and ask them what you *can* do to stop the traffic. Complain that it's ruining your yard and they shouldn't be trespassing on your property in the first place. HOA members are usually pretty much jerks when it comes to someone breaking the HOA rules. I'm sure they would be all over this (those little old ladies love nothing more than enforcing stupid rules on people, especially kids).

And, don't put down anything like a nail strip. If one of the kids gets hurt, you will be liable.
