That would depend on what sort of commitment the parent is prepared to make in the sport. I know I sometimes wonder if we should have let our children get involved due to the cost and also the injuries. The sport is great fun and something for kids to do that doesn't involve staring at a computer screen for hours on end. But if your child ends up wanting to take the sport to a higher level then it becomes very expensive.
All the young children that I know of over the years that have been involved in the sport just love it. Some stay involved all their lives and others find other interests.
But as long as the right safety gear is used then there is no reason why small kids should not race. Some of them are more competitive than the adults.

seat hight is the key thing to look for, a 5' 2" person would be able to stand comfortably on a bike with a seat hight around 30" (depending on how much hight is in their legs) on a dirtbike, you can have a higher unloaded seat hight and still be ok because they have alot more shock travel and go down alot farther when you sit on them than street bikes do.

Bring him to some shops to sit on the bikes.
Small engine bikes come in different sizes (seat heights).
A 10yr old should be able to handle something between 80cc & 100cc

If you want to surprise him, say you're going to a shop to buy a spark plug (or other parts) and ask if he would like to come with you.
While you're there, point to the dirt bikes and say "aren't those cool! - go ahead sit on some"

I'm 14 and I'm going to get a 200cc dirt bike but my friends say that I'm not ready yet but I've rode a 125 dirt bike before and i want to know if i should just get a 125 or stay with the 200.
i for got to add the stroke its a 4 stroke and its a racing bike and it cost 800 and i have sat on a 250 and i its 3 inches smaller

if its your first bike no but if your an experienced rider go for it i just turned 15 last month and i ride a 250 but ive been riding for a long time make shure your comforatable on the bike first and can at least tip toe it but i think you would be better off getting a smaller 4 stroke bike for your first time trust me you wont regret it

I think thats great that they want to start, there really is no age limit, you just have to go to a local dirt bike retailer and check some bikes out because they come in a bunch of sizes, i've been riding since i was 2 so i know what I'm talking about, its just takes practice. just make sure you teacher your kids and they should be fine.

I really want to get a dirt bike. ever since i was a kid ive been obsessed with motorcycles. i asked for it for Christmas when i was like 12 and my parents didn't get it for me. now im 14 and i still really want one. One of my friends from school has a quad and people on his block have dirt bikes and quads to. He always puts videos on intagram of them racing down the street and it makes me want one even more. So i was just wondering if a cop will really do anything if he sees a 14 year old kid riding a dirt bike not speeding down the road. Will he just look the other way? I live in New York BTW

He'll wave hand at you! LOL. Seriously, he will either arrest you or put your bike in the cop car trunk or maybe both. Or if he's a "GOOD" cop than he'll most likely give you a warning and escort you to your house and have a chat with your parents. The chat more than likely will not be about weather or who sells the best donuts though!

my little brother has never had a big birthday present, and he is turning 13. he loves dirt bikes and currently rides my boyfriends pit bikes around when we go out to the track or riding at a parking lot. for his birthday this year i want to get him started with his gear and hopefully get him to start saving for a bigger bike so that he can learn how to ride. i would love a list of things that could help me get started. thank you!

There is a lot of stuff to dirt biking but some basics for gear that you wanted to get him would be
helmet
goggles
chest protector
gloves
jersey
pants
and boots
Thats the basic saftey equipment. This stuff can be pretty expensive and start to add up. But that stuff will make him feel like he is a pro.

Is dirt bike racing only for younger kids or can people in their 20's start in it?

NO,their are 60 yr oldes that do their first race in the 450 class. It is always better so start when your young but it depends on your skill. If its his first time riding a bike and has no skill i would suggest not racing, all he would do is get hurt and suck.
