Answer
that is a mini mini triatholon!!!. I would just ride 4 riles run 2 and try and do it a few times in a row. You should be able to sprint the 1.5 on your bike.

Good luck

in a kid's triathlon are the events broken up between people?

What are some activities to do while babysitting a 9 year old boy?

best bikes 9 year old kids image

hello

Hi. I am babysitting a 9 year old boy twice a week this summer, I did it last year too, but I get soooo bored, and so does he because we run out of things to do. I babysit for 10 hours and most of the time he plays video games or watches cartoons, but I want him to have more physical activities and maybe some arts and craft things that we can do together that we both will enjoy. I am hoping I can have at least one new creative activity that we can do each day and he will really like it, and the parents will be impressed too. So if you have any ideas of fun creative activities or arts and crafts game for a nine year old boy (who loves the Steelers, superheroes, drawing and his 2 dogs), I would greatly appreciate it! Oh...and he has a pool and a pretty big backyard, but his driveway is very small, which means hard to ride bikes. Any help would be GREAT!! Thank you! :)

Answer
i taught school age kids at a child care center... my class liked carving soap... you get a white bar of soap from the store, and a plastic butter knife... carve away... if ya mess up, and a drop or 2 of water and mold it back together... and voila you have a neat sculpture that smells nice too! dragons, animals, totempoles, and cars were popular for our boys

Ideas for my 9 year old daughter for Christmas?

Chris

I have four kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. I have finished Christmas shopping for all of them except my 9 year old daughter. Please help give me some ideas! I have about a $200 budget for her.

Answer
It would help to know what her interests are. Reading, a keyboard (electric piano), craft kits, bike, clothes, music, theater tickets, dance/sport lessons,a nice starter piece of jewelry-like a charm bracelet or add a pearl necklace (every year you add another pearl to it.

Answer
This is a pretty good demonstration on how to fix a bike flat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvuKlEnHVLc&feature=related

You will need tire levers, a patch kit or a new inner tube
Taking the wheel out isn't bad you just need a wrench an adjustable one is OK and loosen the two outer nuts on the axle. If it's a rear wheel with a coaster brake you also need a screwdriver to free it from the frame, and of course move the chain off the wheel.
To find the puncture, I put a little air in the tube and then put the tube in a bucket of water and see where the bubbles are coming from. If the leak is right on the seam you probably need a new tube as I haven't had much luck with patches applied to seam leaks. Once you see whats wrong with the tube look CAREFULLY to see what caused it whether broken glass, a thorn or even a spoke poking out too far. Take care of the cause and reinstall the inner tube.

It really isn't too hard. Those tires should come off pretty easily. If all else fails take it to a bike shop, the fix should be pretty cheap.

I know someone who always wanted to race dirt bikes, but never got the chance. He's in his 20's now, but is that too old to get started in the sport?

Answer
NO,their are 60 yr oldes that do their first race in the 450 class. It is always better so start when your young but it depends on your skill. If its his first time riding a bike and has no skill i would suggest not racing, all he would do is get hurt and suck.

Is it legal for a 13 year old to ride a dirt bike in a residential area?

Nova Kane

Its in a neighborhood, the roads are city owned and maintained. The dirt bikes are extremely loud and the kids keep on punching the gas to make the loud noise as they ride. I live in TN. Is there some sort of legal action that can be taken up against them? Can the police ticket them and impound their bikes?
The also trespass on a vacant lot next to my house on their bikes.

Answer
Call the police. He can't ride it on public streets or sidewalks. He can't ride it on private property without permission of the owner. And he can't disturb the peace with the noise.

Another example of a parent buying something for a kid and having no clue what the rules are. Hope you get help.

My family and I want to move to Melbourne and we would like some info on what the best suburbs are?
We don't want to be right in the busy city, but we would like to be within 20 minutes of it. We would like to be within 20 minutes of the beach. We want to be really close to parks with bike trails, like the one that runs along the Yarra River.
I was thinking somewhere like Kew but I really have no idea what each of the suburbs are like. Any information would be great. Thanks.

Answer
Hi and great decision to move to the best city in the world ( I have lived in a few)

To help with your question, we sort of need a budget per week for housing, what sort of house, how many kids, ages etc??

Try www.realestate.com.au for rental properties, and to find them, look the suburbs up on www.whereis.com.au

To live in a suburb like Kew, you will be looking at around $300-$600 per week for a 3 - 4 bedroom house.

About Arthur Phillip Freeman, murderer of Darcey Iris Freeman?.?

PineApple

where can i find information about Arthur Phillip Freeman,
for example, DOB, place of birth, height, weight, build, hair, eyes, complexion, sex, race, nationality, occupations, scars and marks.

please help i need this information for a report.

Answer
Arthur Phillip Freeman, 37, of Hawthorn, Melbourne, Australia. Caucasian man. There are a couple of photos of him on this link:
http://www.crimecasefiles.com/blog/tag/arthur-phillip-freeman/

Another photo
http://resources1.news.com.au/images/2011/03/18/1226024/337645-freeman.jpg

His locks, streaked blond, tumbled over the collar of the black suit he wore each day. Strands of hair, as though reaching for the sun, on his otherwise bare crown suggested a close relationship with a power plug.

His forehead looked to be carved with a hammer and chisel. As Freeman shuffled in each morning, shackles clanking, shoulders hunched, his body resembled a block of concrete, wide and thick.

As a young man, Freeman tinkered with Ford escorts, to prepare them for Autocross racing. His first car was a yellow Escort, many of its panels dented and repaired. He would stay up until 5am on PlayStation, nap, then head to work at 8am. Later, when he met his future wife, Ardie would start to be instead called Artie.

By the time Freeman had qualified with a computer science honours degree, he had lost his hair at the crown of his head. For 35 years, until January 29, 2009, âArdieâ was considered âharmlessâ. He was an IT geek who had shone as a database administrator in London.

He played tennis weekly. He kept busy, with bike rides and tinkering, as he always had as a boy. There were beers and skiing trips in a life led, from school onwards, under the radar. Ordinariness was his thing.

More than anything else, it seems, he wanted more time with his three kids who - for a stretch - he had cared for full-time. He played beach soccer with them. He would take his daughter to ballet. Darcey would seek him out for hugs.

Article goes on to describe anger issues.

How can the average kid help get smoking banned?

Q. I am doing a brochure for my seventh grade language arts class. We are working on persuasion; I chose smoking to be my topic. My argument is that it should be banned, but I need to use some persuasive techniques for a good grade. One way I was planning to do this is to explain how kids in my class can help get smoking banned. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Firstly, I very strongly disagree about banning smoking, largely on the grounds of individual freedom, and if you want to ban smoking, you should ban alcohol, a more destructive drug first.

Being underage (thus unable to vote) there is very little that kids can do, except encourage adults to quit.

I'm not sure telling kids how they can help get smoking banned will help be persuasive and it does distract from the main arguement, which is "why smoking should be banned", instead of "how to ban smoking".

Here are some persuausive arguements I would use:
*ask the class to think about if cigarettes were a new invention, and were not widespread in society, and if they should be allowed.
* Argue that the smoker is not only harming himself, but also others (2nd hand smoke) including her/his family who have to suffer the grief of an early death.
*Argue that the government has a moral responsiblity to protect people from things like tobacco that may kill them, and tobacco should be banned for the same reason riding a bicycle without a helmet, driving a car thats unsafe, or riding a car without a seatbelt, to protect the safety of the individual.
*Point out the costs to smoking on society (including not only medical expenses, but days of work due to illnesses) and argue that society should have a right to protect itself by banning things that impose costs on it.
*Lastly, ask the kids to think if they had children would they allow them to smoke. If not, why should we (society) let adults do it.

Like I said, i do not agree with banning smoking, but the above arguements should be persuausive. Good luck with your assignment.

I'm planning to move with my wife to Toronto, Ontario. and id like to know the average expenditures per month. no kids or pets, just two couples. and we are looking for studio type as a beginning. it can be out of city but near by transportation

Answer
For a basic apartment, rent will cost you between $800 and $1200, depending on the area you choose to live (downtown is rediculously expensive). Some places have utilities and water all included, this is a great option if you can find it, it just makes everything way easier. I can't say how much these will cost you otherwise since I try to only live in places where it's included. If you find an apartment in a building, I highly recommend doing some research before commiting. Some buildings have bad pest problems (I've had to deal with this, it's a huge hassel)

A basic cell phone plan will cost you about $30 each, more or less depending on the company you choose to go with. I recommend avoiding the bigger companies like Bell and Rogers, they're overpriced with bad customer service. Phones obviously are optional, but a good idea if you are job hunting. Internet can be bundled into your phone plan and will cost an additional $25-50. Some apartments even offer free wi-fi, so this may not be needed

If you're thrifty and good with budgeting, you can get away with $200 a month for groceries for two people. Check out fruit markets for cheaper and fresher produce, and bulk stores for staples like beans and rice. Herbs are easy to find and starting a small herb garden will save you some money too. If you choose to rent a house with a private backyard, it's legal to grow your own vegetables. Farm animals are not allowed within the city though

Transportation costs will vary depending on your lifestyle. The public transportation offers a monthly pass for $126 that offers unlimited travel within city limits, this is a good option if you choose to take the bus or subway everyday. Downtown has lots of bike lanes so biking is farely easy too. Cars are extremely expensive to own here though. Vehicle insurance is mandetory in Canada, and that alone could cost you about $300 a month in Toronto (with a good record, if you have any accidents or tickets, it will be more). Most apartments also will charge you to park your car, which is usually about $50 a month that is added to your rent

That's all I can think of right now, hope it helps though.

Where's the best place in Michigan to take a summer vacation?

DGS

We're interested in the beach, kayaking, hiking and biking trails, perhaps an amusement park day for the kids. Would like to keep it within a day's drive of Pittsburgh/Youngstown if possible.

Answer
I live in Ohio and have looked into this from time to time. I never quite made the trip. I always went elsewhere. But, I think I can give you a little bit of help.

From what I read in my research on the web and in the library, the Upper Peninsula looks a lot better place than the lower section. The Porcupine Mountains State Park looked fantastic. The Apostle Islands also looked great. There are supposed to be great places to go kayaking to the islands up there.

I have heard that there are some good places to hike in the Lower section of the state. I used the book "50 Hikes in Michigan" for research.
I was going to go to Sleeping Bear Dunes and some other places in the book. There is also a nice place to get a cabin in the northeastern section of the Lower part of the state. You'll have to consult the book for that. The author said it wasn't crowded, was inexpensive and was a nice place to go.

The Au Sable River in the lower part of the state is supposed to be good for canoeing. Some friends of mine did this with their family and had a very good time.

If the Upper Peninsula is a little bit too far, or if you are open for an alternative trip, I would recommend going to the Bruce Peninsula and the small town of Tobermory in Canada. I went up there in May one year and totally enjoyed it.

It is an easy drive - less than a day. There is sea kayaking, some parks to hike in, some nice small (non-national chain) hotels and restaurants.

Be sure to do the coastal hike in Bruce Peninsula National Park.
Get a hiking guide to the Bruce Trail.
Take the boat ride to Flower Pot Island.
Take the glass-bottom boat rides to see the old wooden ships sunken in the harbor from the 1700/1800s. The water preserves them.
I am pretty sure that you can rent bikes up there.

I stayed in a small hotel, but you can camp in the parks.
It was a nice experience to go up there mostly because the locals were very friendly. I went just before the main tourist season, though.

On the drive up there, go through Niagara Falls and stop and see the butterfly greenhouse.

Best of luck and have fun wherever you go.

I have to start wearing a athletic cup when im racing dirt-bikes. how do i no what size i need to get.... im 19 and havent ever had to wear one before

Answer
Cups are sold by waist size for youth or adult. I would say if you're 19.. you're an adult. I used to ride and wore a cup too and found wearing a banana style cup was super uncomfortable. I switch to a hockey style cup like a protext or bauer which were way better. I hated missing my foot peg and sliding into the f******gas cap. It's a good idea to wear one just in case.

what are the differant styles of road bikes?

Tyler

I am in the market for a road bike but i don't know what to look for in a bike. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Answer
There are many variations of road bike based on a variety of factors, including (1) intended use and (2) material.

INTENDED USE

Ok, there a variety of different styles of road bikes and many people often call them different things. Here is my breakdown.

If you are planning on riding long rides but still want to have a fast race bike, the "Plush" category of bikes. Don't let the word "plush" fool you -- these are still high quality race bikes, they are just slightly altered to accomodate longer rides. These would include the Specialized Roubaix series (go to www.specialized.com) and the Cannondale Synnapse series (www.cannondale.com). These two bike series will range from about $1900 to about $6000 depending on the model. They are designed to be fast and compliant, but at the same time slightly more comfortable. Trust me, though, you won't be lacking in performance.

If you are going to be focusing on road racing, you might want to go with a Specialized Tarmac, a Trek Madone, a Cannondale SuperSix, or something similar. Again, a huge price range. (for a less expensive option, look at the Specialized Allez). These bikes generally will have a little more aggressive geometry (shorter head tubes, steeper angles, etc).

If you live in an area with flat ground and foresee yourself doing triathlons or bike time trials, then getting a time trial bike would be the way to go. These bikes focus on aeordynamics (although they are still really light) and pure straight speed (not as good on hills, curves, etc). Examples are the Trek TT, the Specialized Transition, the Cannondale Slice.

Many companies also make a variety of bikes in the "touring" category. These are not racing bikes, focus more on long haul comfort, but are still fast and fun to ride.

Cyclocross bikes may be a good choice if you want a limited ability to go off-road. They are generally not as light or fast as road bikes (although a really high end one will be), but still have a good sporty feel. They are generally geared a bit lower - in cyclocross you need the ability to accelarate over rough terrain and steep hills, not necessarily the ability to go 35 mph on a straightaway. I have a cx bike that I use for commuting, riding in bad conditions or going out with my kids -- situations in which I wouldn't want to take my carbon road bike.

As far as materials, the main ones are Carbon Fiber, Aluminum, Steel and Titanium. If you are going for a race bike, I personally believe that Carbon Fiber is the way to go. The material is stiff, light, and eats up road vibrations. I would guess that a vast majority of bikes on the pro tour are carbon. Aluminum can still be really light and is very stiff (and would be great for a time trial bike or criterium bike) but may not be as comfortable over a long ride. Steel is old school and is a popular material among bike messengers because it makes a statement (I don't need your fancy materials) and is very durable. It also is used on many cyclocross bikes. Titanium is a great material and generally the choice of middle age men (and older) who can drop some cash.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Looking to buy a new mt. bike-Hardtail, $1000-$1300 price range. Any ideas?

ehiggens

I have already test road the Trek 6700 and liked it. Looking at reviews, it seems like the components arent that great though. Any suggestions as to other bikes I should check out in that same price range?

Answer
All bikes in that range will have similar components (lx/some xt or equivalent), unless you find one on sale. I like to look at last years model because you can usually find one at 30% off the current retail.

The one thing you failed to mention is what kind of riding you are looking to do, and where. All Mountain, XC, Downhill, freeride, dirtjump, cyclocross. Each will use a different type of MTB and will yield different suggestions from the crowd.

Make it a point to visit 3-4 bike shops. Tell the sales person your budget, your intentions with respect to riding style, and have them help show you what they have. Test ride them all without prejudice and make an objective choice.

just don't buy Trek...... Just kidding. Trek makes a good bike, so does Specialized, or Cannondale, or Kona, or Gary Fisher, the list goes on and on.

Things to consider along with the brand and components, is the feel of the shop where you spend your money. Do they answer your questions? Do you feel comfortable with them? What kind of after sale support is included? What is the warranty for the frame/fork?

Why are there more women jogging than men?

best kids bikes toronto on Kids bike trailer/stroller - $175 (Ajax)
best kids bikes toronto image

At least around Pacific Northwest that seems to be the case. A recent statistics seem to reconfirm my anecdotal observation: 70% of the participants of Seattle Rock-n-Roll marathon are women.

Answer
Why do more women seem to exercise than men?

I have been noticing for the past few years now that there are waaaaayyy more women that are running than men in downtown Toronto! Why is that?

Iâve been working in downtown Toronto for the past few years now. Weâre pretty close to Lake Ontario as well. So, sometimes I go walk by the lakeshore. No matter where I go I have noticed that there are indeed more women outside than men.

More women are walking to work in the mornings and walking back in the afternoon. More women are biking in downtown. More women are jogging, running, roller blading! During lunch time I see them just go out for a jog by the lake as well. I would see you see at least 5 women for every man you see walking, jogging etc.

Why is that though?

I mean itâs always nice to see more women outside than lots of men ;-) But I really thought about it.

Is it because women are a lot more health conscious than men? If thatâs the case then why is that? Do they really believe in remaining healthy?

Or is it because of the media? How weâre shown images of out of this world women with perfect proportions. We all know the kind of negative impact media has on us, especially the young kids these days. But is it possible that that negativity is also imbedded with in ourselves?

Are there more women that are health conscious because of low self esteem? Is it because they really want to be in good shape because itâs considered supposedly ugly to be a little over weight?

Iâve actually noticed how women that look good actually advanced fairly rapidly with in the work place. Not only that but theyâre also treated differently than a little over weight women. A beautiful woman giving you an attitude and you might understand but an over weight one doing the same thing and you would never understand and actually treat her totally differently. Iâve seen this happen actually. An over weight woman was giving attitude to a few people at my work and they started commenting on how fat and ugly that woman was and she was still giving attitude and how if she was pretty they would actually understand her behaviour.

So, is that the reason that more women are into health than men?

What if they actually learned to totally love themselves for who they are? Is that possible? Of course it is possible but may not be as easy as it might be for men. I spoke to a friend of mine about this and he said that a man could be fat and ugly and still get girls as long as he had money but itâs very hard for women in this world to attract men as easily if theyâre over weight.

This post is not something I intended to write. Itâs just me thinking out loud basically. Iâve seen what low self-esteem can do to a person. Iâm really curious to know how different people would be if they accepted themselves as who they are and totally approved of themselves.

Maybe we should have some sort of an experiment. Take someone whoâs really into health and fitness but with low self-esteem and then help them fall in love with themselves and see what happens then.

On the other hand if you love yourself you treat yourself much better anyways. So, you would be really conscious of your health as well. hmm.. that doesnât take me any closer to an answer.

Maybe conclusion is: if you like yourself and are happy with yourself and thatâs why youâre health conscious then thatâs wonderful but if youâre exercising constantly because you want to maintain a certain figure because you believe you would look more beautiful if you were a certain weight, then thatâs not good!

Love yourself completely no matter how you look. Fall in love with yourself because no matter where you are, you are the only one thatâs going to be accompanying you. So, you might as well make yourself your own friend rather than an enemy

Are there indoor heated swimming pools, tennis courts, mini-golf for fun in Canada for wintertime?

EricS

Where would you find this in Canada if say you wanted to do summer sports during winter through indoor heated facility?

I recall one used to exist in Calgary but what about Toronto and Montreal and Vancouver?

Answer
In Vancouver, take your pick of dozens using 'indoor pool and tennis' as the criteria...
https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=community+centre+vancouver+tennis+pool

There are a few indoor bike tracks and running tracks eg at UBC, I think 4Rinks in Burnaby has one also

The indoor 'mini-golf' is the snag - tough finding a facility that has pools tennis and golf; there very well might be such a thing, I'm just not aware of it nor have much time to search... that said there's lots of indoor mini-golf places also, eg the 18 hole mini golf course at The Bear Creek Park.
http://www.bcminigolf.com/
While hurredly searching I found a few more but they seemed more for kids and office parties.
[great idea, get me bombed then give me a golf club... indoors no less - there's an accident waiting to happen]

Vancouver isn't much of an indoor place, our winters are mild and outdoor activity usually goes year round... but lots of indoor sports and fitness centres abound.

As for senseless questions, I never mind those - who better to answer than moi I figure.

how long do I need to train for an IronMan Triathlon?

Reopye

I know it's a long way off but Challenge UK are going to hold an Iron distance triathlon in September in 2012 in Henley. Now I thought about this a lot and I'm thinking of entering.

However, I'm currently in university and I won't finish until mid-June. After that I would have 3 months of uninterrupted time for training. I already have a good level of fitness (I'm on the university triathlon team) but I keep hearing about people who train for 30 weeks before an IronMan and I'm worried that I won't have enough time for training.

Could somebody who knows about triathlon - or who has done an IronMan - tell me just how long they take to train?

On a side note, I read somewhere that less than 1% of first-time attempts at an IronMan succeed. That sounds far too low to me. What's a better estimate?

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies! =D

Answer
I don't think that you've gotten much useful advice so far. For starters, yes you can do this. I should also start by asking: do you want to finish or do you want to podium/PR/top 20 etc.? If you just want to finish, this is very do-able, esp. with a full summer to devote...so long as you have some time to train during the school year. Somewhere around 10% of competitors DNF in a triathlon so put that aside - most of those folks DNF due to either weather or nutrition issues they weren't prepared for. And hey -you have YOUTH on your side! The best way to plan on finishing this September 2012 IM is to build up to a Half Ironman either later this year or in the spring early summer of 2012. And train smart - quality and heart rate zone training will maximize the time you have without setting you up for injury. Quality training at an aerobic level will take you further than high intensity or tons of junk miles. And junk miles are useless if you have some imbalances and weaknesses that also set you up for injury. So, step one, think through what races you could do to lead up to this. Step two, figure out your heart rate zone. Step Three, get some biomechanical analysis of your swim stroke, bike and run technique so you can correct any glaring issues. My husband does this for tons of people, both local and via internet. I'm a good wife - I listen. Also a three-time IM finisher - all in my 50's. His contact - loucookson@gmail.com Hope this helps!

My first triatholon, I need help.?

Jay

I'm 15 and I'm going to compete in my first (youth) triatholon and I have a couple questions for anyone who knows about or has been in a triatholon. First of all, the race I'm doing is a 400m swim, 7 mile bike, and a 2 mile run. What are the transactions in between each like, do I change clothes after I swim, is it still part of the race? What should I wear for each? And what kind of bike do you recommend (I need to buy one)? Any additional information would be great, thanks.

Hi! First off, correct spelling is "triathlon" (although that mistake is one a lot of folks make). And the short periods between swim and bike, and between bike and run, are called "transitions." And they *do* count against your time, so you want to hurry through them!

Although there *are* specialized triathlon bikes that allow, and even require, you to stay in a low, flat-back, streamlined or "aero" (short for aerodynamically-efficient) position, it's far better to train on a so-called "road bike" (like the Tour de France riders use almost every day) with drop handlebars.

You can get *some* of the aero advantages of a triathlon bike from Profile Jammer GT bars:

http://www.profile-design.com/products/aerobars/jammer-gt/

which are installed onto your stock handlebars.

You've got to go to the best local bike shop in your area and get your bike properly fitted to you. Don't cut corners here.

It's important to be comfortable while you train, so you've gotta get cycling shorts, which have an integral pad to cushion your butt. You can race in a triathlon-specific suit which is essentially a swimsuit with a smaller version of that pad. Most ambitious triathletes race in these, so they don't change their clothes mid-race and thus lose time.

Finally you'll want to buy Yankz elastic laces and put them on your running shoes. That will save you substanial time in T2 (the second, or bike-to-run, transition).

Good luck, and write if you have further questions!

How do I install training wheels around a rear derailleur on a 20" bike?

StanleyLiv

Just purchased Wald training wheels for kids bike (16" to 26"). The right side has a gear derailleur on it, which extends further than the axle. I can't put the training wheel bar on the axle since I don't have clearance.

Can this axle be extended out farther somehow?

Answer
There are better ways to learn how to ride a bike. Remove the pedals and lower the saddle so they can flat foot on the ground and push them self around and learn to steer. Then try coasting down a small slop with the feet down and then lifting the feet. Next replace the pedals and gradually raise the saddle.

Is a kids bike chain spaced differently?

ilikesta

I bought a standard chain at the store for my friends kids barbie bike. It seems to fit fine on the rear sprocket but the fron sprocket won't accept the spacing of the chain. Is there a different spacing for chains?

Answer
Yes, there are different chains available. There are generally speaking 2 pitches:
3/32 for dérailleur equipped bikes
1/8 for single speed and internal geared bikes like old 3 speeds
So unfortunately, there is no single common chain with bikes. Check out the links below for more.

How can I turn a coaster brake hub into a fixed gear hub?

Reptar88

I have a 12" rear wheel from a kid's bike (coaster brake hub/wheel) but I want to make it a fixed gear for a chain driven unicycle I'm building. Any suggestions on how I might accomplish this?

Answer
You can actually do this internally depending on who made the hub, but the fastest, easiest way to accomplish it is to have a weld shop tack weld the cog to the hub shell. 4 tacks around the perimeter should do it and keep heat to a minimum.

It would be far better for your needs to get a freewheel hub, add a fixed gear, and build the wheel.

How can a 12 year old make easy money with out approaching a lawnmower?

Evan

I am 12 and I am saving up money for a ps3 how can I make easy money without having to touch a lawnmower and take out the trash?

Answer
1. Go to craigslist and make an account\

2. Post a add under community/childcare or pet care be sure to make it sound like you can babysit very well, I say i will take attentive care of your child while you are away. be sure to put your cell-phone number, not your home phone, but if you don't have a cell than home phone is fine

3. make lots and lots of posters about your babysitting and use all the tips i said in step 2. Put them around places not near a highway, place them on posts around neighborhoods where people like to walk.

4. Bike or walk around until you see a women/man who has children and give them a "flyer" and ask if they need a babysitter. ( I got 2 jobs this way)

5. BE SURE TO BE ASSERTIVE!! Ask for an amount of money and STICK TO IT! if they don't want to pay you that much then tell them by. You DO NOT want to look like a kid that people can take advantage of.

Thank you for reading, hope it helps dude.

What can I legally do about kids riding dirt bikes in Pennsylvania?

best kids first dirt bike image

There are a bunch of kids that live around me and ride their dirt bikes, tractors, you name it, around the streets and on private property. I was just wondering if there was any legal action that I could take against them. I live in Pennsylvania. If you can even reference me to the state laws regarding dirt bikes I would be most appreciatve. Any advice in general would be helpful.
By private property I mean other people property. I don't care if they ride on their own but they're cutting through peoples yards to get to a field.

Answer
They can ride them on private property, but it's illegal on public streets. Next time, call the local police and tell them what's happening.

At what age can kids start riding dirt bikes?

Momof3kidd

I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old boy who are interested in dirt biking. What age would it be appropriate for them to start? I think they are a little young, my husband disagrees. What age did your kids start?

Answer
I think thats great that they want to start, there really is no age limit, you just have to go to a local dirt bike retailer and check some bikes out because they come in a bunch of sizes, i've been riding since i was 2 so i know what I'm talking about, its just takes practice. just make sure you teacher your kids and they should be fine.

Mr Skeng

I'm a London boy visiting the states for the fist time. What shall I do when I'm in San Diego?

Answer
Welcome to San Diego.
It's one of the nicest cities in the country. It's a major tourist destination and they know how to treat visitors right.

Mission and Pacific Beach are your best bet for fun in the sun. Belmont Park has a vintage wooden roller coaster (one of two remaining seaside coasters on the west coast) as well as other rides. There is a boardwalk that runs the entire 3 mile length of both beaches. It's a great place to rent a bike or skates.

Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo.

My favorite museum in the park is the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. It has some of the largest model layouts in the world. It is really awesome and a real hidden gem. Kids get in free.

North County San Diego is home to the Zoo's Wild Animal Park. There are multi acre enclosures where herds of wild animals roam plus lots of hiking trails.

The Quail Botanical Gardens are in Encinitas

La Jolla offers great views, great surfing, great food, and great shopping.
Check out the surfers at historic Windansea Beach. At low tide you can walk out onto the tide pools. Walk along the Cove and check out the caves. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Take a stroll on Prospect St and check out the shops, galleries, and have some authentic Mexican food at Alfonso's. Then head to the Birch Aquarium at The Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It has a spectacular view of the bluffs over the Pacific Ocean.

Take the trolley from Downtown to Old Town. There is a state park there that recreates life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. There are also a lot of restaurants in the area. Pizza Bella has the best pizza in town as well as homemade Italian food.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse at the Cabrillo National Monument offers great views of the downtown skyline, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mexico.

Planning a free day around London?

gjgfojgog

I want to take my boyfriend around London, he hasn't really been before. All i have planned is to walk down southbank, walk until we get to trafalgar square and then i don't know what to do after that would interest him. he's not really a cultural person more of a uninterested in anything person.

Answer
If he's not really interested in much, maybe it's time to try to find something that excites him...?

Have you thought about:
- being a kid again and rolling down the hills in Richmond or Greenwich Park? Flying a kite?
- walking around the markets? (Camden; Greenwich; Borough; Pentoville Road; Roman Road; Covent Garden)
- journeying over to a number of the museums and galleries? (Natural History; Science; National Portrait Gallery)
- getting a read in the British Library
- hiring a bike (reasonable cheap) and cycling around the side streets to see the independent shops and stuff that don't normally get seen by tourists?
- looking at the grafitti tunnel by Waterloo station?
- taking part in a Japanese karaoke bar?

Apart from Titanium, which bike frame is stringer?

best kids aluminium bikes on Yeti Big Top Large Aluminum Carbon 29er 29
best kids aluminium bikes image

richmck

A while back I conducted a survey with kids at my school about which metals were stronger according to their use. ( During the course of my 'experiment' I did my own personal investigation to spruce up the class activity by introducing materials which we do not / cannot use in the manufacturing of cars, bikes, trains etc... )
Since then I have purchased several bikes, a carbon fibre mtb being my favourite for mountain biking as I am an avid rider and the M5 aluminium material, as a reference point.
I refer to an enduro type bike not a jump bike with long forks.

I found out that Titanium was at the time, an expensive metal used in the construction of mountain bikes, as well as in the construction of various other objects.

Has any other metal or for that matter a new type of carbon fibre been introduced to the world of cycling which stronger and much more resilliant than Titanium.
And what use does Magnesium play in construction nowadays?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
I think you are getting things a little skewed, and I am sorry to say that your thesis of certain materials not being able to be used in the manufacture of bikes in particular is, well, wrong.

Virtually any material- even paper- can be used to design a bicycle frame that is sufficiently strong IF you take all of the other prerequisites away (such as weight), and it really doesn't matter what KIND of bike either... a good frame designer develops the frame for a particular use- they don't just design a frame and make it out of anything they want. Want to make a bike frame from water? Sure! Develop a mould, fill it with water, and freeze it. It may not last too long but if designed correctly it should be rideable for at least a few minutes. Plastic? Already done- search for "The Original Plastic Bike".

Both M5 and carbon fibre (CF) are composites. M5 has "whiskers" of a certain oxide in it while CF has a combination of epoxy and the carbon material. Titanium, aluminium, and magnesium are alloys which include a "mix" of other metals to gain the properties desired. Steel is an alloy too, and so is Cheez Whiz and coffee with cream (or even tea with lemon).

Magnesium (Mg) has been used for a long time for bicycle parts such as fork crowns and sliders. It is slowly being recognized as a good frame material- lighter than all the others and stronger than most- as the kinks are worked out for use in mass production. Just as the early days of Ti, CF and AL, the use of Mg will expand as designers understand the limits. I have been working with Mg frames for about 8 years now with dozens of prototypes and think that I have finally gotten the material where I need it.

If you want some more info, go to http://thecheapbikeshop.com and follow the link to the Esoterica section. There you'll find quaint discussions of different materials.

questions about an ice cream bike?

jboyle1982

I have two questions for everyone.

1-does anyone know where to get a licence for an ice cream bike in toronto, ontario
2-does anyone have any ideas on how to turn it into a year round business?

I know I cannot sell ice cream in the winter but I was thinking of trying coffee or hot chocolate or cookies or something. Please do not mention that people can go to the store for this stuff cheap as I am not like most businesses...I will not be undercut, My prices are lower than most.

Answer
IN order to do that you must have a business license, issued by the Province of Ontario, plus a City of Toronto food vendor license, and your cart has to met the Health Department standards, plus YOU have to have a medical exam, to be a food server.

In addition to do that, you cannot sell in city parks, or on a sidewalk, and you must have a way to wash YOUR hands, with hot water.

Now for the practical side.........who are you going to get your supplies from ? You will need to have an Ontario Sales Tax exemption number, to be able to buy at the wholesalers, at wholesale prices. You will need a HST registration number and collect HST and PST on all your sales. You will need a liability insurance policy of at least one million dollars, to satisfy the city by law regulations for a food vendor permit.

Finally, why would you think that you, as a sole operator can compete with Timmies or Starbucks ?

How are you going to make fresh coffee, on the street?

Those kids that you see peddling ice cream bikes don't own them. They are working for a ice cream compnay, who makes ice cream. The kids get a small commission on each item sold. If they make $10 a day, they are doing good. Its a dead end job. The company has all of ther things that I mentioned above. The kids just do the work, while the company makes the money. Some of those bikes are 20 years old, and they get put out every summer.

You can make more actual money collecting scrap metal, or buying scrap cars and stripping out the copper, aluminium and steel, then selling the left over frame to the junk yard for the weight. One small old car can make you $500, if you get it for 100.

Do pawn shops have a set price for items they buy?

Joe Quiksi

Like lets say you wanna sell a guitar to them. Do they already know without looking at it that the most they can spend on it is lets say $40 because they might sell it for $120. (electric guitar, decent brand) or are they actually willing to spend a little more because they know it might be worth it. Or another example is with a bike. I own a Trek mountain bike worth about $900 retail. going about $500 used. I took it to a pawn shop the other day and tried to sell it. Before the lady even looked at it she said she can only pay $25. She explained that those bikes are going for about $100 new. But she ASSUMED I had some cheap kids bike. So do they have a set price on what they can spend on certain items?

Answer
Business owners are free to set the prices they will pay.

Many pawn shops avoid high-ticket items for fear of them being confiscated as stolen. Perhaps if you brought in a sales receipt and confirmed product registration to prove ownership.
