I am looking to get a bike to give me a cardio alternative to walking or running. I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid, so I am trying to figure out what kind of bike to get -- mountain bike, road bike etc. How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?

Answer
Start by reading "Bicycles: How to Choose"
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

It's all based on "where & how" you will be riding. Road bikes will be your fastest choice but for the streets & smooth roads ONLY. Mountain bikes or all-terrain bikes basically suck on the streets because of the knobby off road tires & suspension parts zapping your energy. Knobby tires slow you down. And with every turn of the pedals, part of your energy is absorbed or soaked up by suspension parts. All-terrain bikes are OK on the streets ONLY if they have a smoother "street friendly" tread design & "lock-out" front forks. This (in essence) turns the suspension fork into a rigid fork with the simple twist of a switch.

Hybrids are a good "all around" type bike. They are great at nothing - but still good at many things. They can be ridden on the streets or light (man-made) groomed off-road trails of finely crushed stone.

"How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?" Nine very, very simple words... See your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local BICYCLE shop! Not K-Mart, Wally World or Target. At a REAL bicycle shop you can TRY B4 you BUY! You can test ride as many bikes as your little heart desires before the sale!

Other advantages are...
1) Professional sales - not some minimum wage "associate".
2) Professional assembly of the bike by a certified mechanic - again, not some minimum wage associate.
3) FREE service after the sale. ALL new bikes require a tune-up as shift & brake cables stretch a bit during the break-in process. Some shops do this only once. Some for a year. A bike shop near me does this for LIFE!
http://bigshark.com/about/policies-and-shipping-pg11.htm
4) Vastly better quality. Wally World lists bicycles on their website in the TOY Dept.! Does that give you a clue? A quality bike from a REAL bicycle shop - taken care of properly - can last a lifetime. Those from discount stores are "disposable bikes", meant to be ridden a year or so - then into a dumpster.

See link below. This is my "pride & joy" - a 2011 Raleigh Sojourn touring road bike. Time spent in the shop for repairs? ZERO. Money spent after the sale? A bottle of chain oil (about $8.00) and a set of new tires when the original ones wore out. And I replaced them with the SAME tires. Flat tires to date? ZERO - none - nada. Sure - you'll need to do routine maintenance & cleaning on any type of bike. But getting a quality bike from the start cost LESS in the long run.

How much does a person make their first few years in the army?

April

my husband is thinking about joining the army. we have three small kids together. we are pretty sure the army is a good schoice for our family, although it will be hard. one reason we think this is a valid option is bc of the financial stability the army entails. we dont know his mos will be but he is going to study to try and score at least a 50 on his asvab. if someone knows the range of housing allowance as well as salary i would greatly appreciate your input!

Answer
Depends on how quickly he gets promoted. The first couple of ranks make about 25000 a year, give or take a little, in base pay, but the additional benefits bump that up sometimes more than double depending on where you're stationed. When I was stationed in Maryland I was making almost as much in housing allowance as I was in base pay, and housing allowance is non-taxable. As the other person said, the pay charts are online. They're the same for all services, just do a search for 2010 or 2011 military pay charts, and you can get an idea. If you're curious about specific BAH rates, they are tailored based on the average rent in that area, and change based on rank. With three kids, I'd just live in base housing, because what they pay you in BAH is designed to basically pay for a 2 bedroom apartment, and it's not going to completely cover your rent, but if you're in military housing they assign it based on the size of your family. You guys would get at least a 3 bedroom home, maybe a 4 depending on the ages and genders of your children. Health care is free, which I love, and at most bases, the housing is close enough that he could bike to work to save on gas if it was really tight for you. Once he's been in for four or five years, the finances ease up considerably. So, in a nutshell, the base pay (in the charts) is the only thing out of your military benefits that's taxable. I've been in 10 years and am an E6, and my taxable income is about $35,000 a year, but because I have four kids I'm never liable for any taxes. In fact, I generally get back considerably more than I paid in. The financial stability is great, because I don't have to count hours and figure out if my budget can take me taking a vacation or staying home sick, and I don't have to weigh the cost of prescriptions against how sick I am and take risks with my health. Honestly, if you're good at living within your means, it is very easy to live comfortably in the military, just do your best to stay out of debt. I buy older cars for a few thousand cash and drive them until they die rather than shelling out tens of thousands for a new car that won't be worth anything by the time I pay it off. We budget our money and plan out what we are going to eat for the month, and only buy those groceries. If we want expensive furniture, we save up for it and buy it when we have the money rather than putting it on credit. That might all sound a bit money-nazi, but it's allowed us great freedom with our finances, and because we're good at saving money, we can afford to travel places like Disney for family vacations (yes, with four kids), take diving lessons, go out to eat a few times a month, etc. It's by no means upper class living, but it's stable and it's comfortable if you know how to watch your money. Hope this helps!

so earlier today, I was leaving class for a dentist appt. and I saw this large black girl, named tonisha brown, she was stealing some kids bike that was chained to the bike ramp. She glared at me and now when I see her in the halls, her and her gang just stare at me. Then after lunch I found a fried chicken drumstick in my locker that had a note on it, it said I was "dead meat" if I told......what can I do, I am so scared.

How good is Trek 800 bike for adult just to ride around for recreation?

zig

I have the one from 1995 or 1996, and my girl friend keep telling me to "get rid of it" and "buy a new one". Then she flashes off her new Trek bike she just bought last year.

I do not see why I should get rid of my bike and buy a new one when I still enjoy my bike. It looks quite new as I have not ridden that much. She say its for kid's bike size 26" tire....

Should I listen to her ?

Answer
Your girlfriend doesn't know what she's talking about. Back in '96 that bike sold for $294.99. Not exactly cheap for 14 years ago. If you like it - ride it - enjoy it. Kid's bike tires run in the 12" 16" & 24" sizes. Once into 26" wheels, bikes are measured by frame size & will fit anyone from 5' tall to 6' 6" tall.

What would be the most affordable bike to get that is safe to put a 2 year old on the back?

Paula G

Hey There - we are looking to get a couple of bikes to ride around white rock lake with our 22 month old son. We are novices - so we just want something decent, but doesn't need to be the tour de france. Also - what is the best seat for the baby to get? Thanks!

Answer
You do not put a child of 22 months on a bike!!! Are you out of your mind?

OTOH your child can ride WITH you on almost any bike with age appropriate compatible equipment

The child goes on/in the equipment, the equipment attaches to the bike/bikes you choose.

Got it?

Generally speaking if/when your child is old enough to hold his/her head up WITH an infant helmet the progression is usually this:

infant to toddler - best solution is a child trailer. Your kid is sheltered, somewhat protected, sheltered from the sun, and if YOU take a tumble the trailer stays upright!! This will let you go from novice to experienced while your child is safe.

A trailer can go on almost any bike. Some will convert from trailer to jog/stroller.

Check with your local bike shop.

DO NOT BUY AT A BOX STORE. Your LBS will show you how to attach it safely and use it and what bikes will be compatible.

Toddler to lets say maybe 4-5 depending on kid. Some manner of rear mounted child seat. Who knows what will be available by the time the fruit of your loins reaches that age. Same principle, go to your LBS and have them show you how to safely attach it to your bike.

BTW in all this and at all stages GET A HELMET FOR YOUR CHILD and you too. Makes no sense for the child to survive and you to be relearning the alphabet. ;-)

5-9 or so depending on child: tag-along trailer. Like a tandem in principle attaches to your bike. Your child can pedal ... or not. But gets the feeling of participating and helps Mom/Dad move along. You know where said child is (behind you). Said child is not likely to hit me or veer all around the trail unless you do that too ;-)

9 and up plus or minus depending on your child, their interest etc now you may be talking ride with their very own bike or some equip a tandem with crankset the right length for said kid (which can be adjusted as your kid grows)

Have fun out there!!!!!!

Answer
I don't know that anyone makes a child's triathlon bikes, meaning one that has aero wheels and bars, etc. A child's road bike or even general purpose bike should be sufficient. Try attending a local tri that includes kids and see what the competition is using.

What should I do for my triathlon for kids?

We go biking one day, running the next, and swimming the third (ages 7 - 11). Any good routines for the swimming portion. We do "workouts" (no extreme) in the water for halt an hour then play games in the water or on the field.

Answer
Light gymnastics by the pool side before going in (stretching exercises and such). Then lengths in the pool from a few per day, to more, progressively.

My son, Cayden is turning 3 on October 8th. Don't tell me he's too young to be riding dirt bikes. The kid has been riding dirt bikes and quads since my dad bought him a little ones on his first birthday. Right now Cayden is using my little brother's old dirt bike that he had when he was 3. I want to get him a brand new one but what is the best dirt bike?

Answer
DMR Transition dirt jumper is suitable for both amateurs and experienced riders. The great advantage of 26in Transition is its weight that encourages the riders to go for dirt jumping and you would not feel the weight when you are in full swing. Specifically designed drive-train of this jump bike gives great momentum and pushes the bike with good agility while airborne. No doubt, DMR Transition 26in is the right bike for dirt jumpers and street style riders.

How to fix power wheels hummer and quad?

the quad is blue and white, hummers black. Both for kids and from walmart I think. my dad found in shed from previous home owner, said he can keep em. Think the quad needs charger and hummer might need battery and charger. Want one that will work on both. What type of charger and battery should I be looking for?

Answer
should be 6 volt battery, im sure the batteries and chargers are available from the makers. i used to strap on a drycell 12 volt battery, and use a 6/12 volt charger, but my kids were bored with the slow ride, they grew up on bikes and gokarts.

For example when your a toddler you only had to keep track of SPEED and DIRECTION. Once you take of the training wheels you also had to manage you BALANCE. Once you get a bike with gears you have to keep track of GEARS. You also have to keep track of speed, brakes, turns, hills descents. What else do you have to keep track of when you bike?

How about when you dirtbike? (This should have more things to keep track off)

Answer
Simple yet complex... EVERYTHING around you. Traffic, pedestrians stepping off the sidewalk, wind direction & speed, the weather, your own condition at the time, what's in the road ahead, what's behind coming up on you. Like I said - everything.

What height should a toddlers bicycle be adjusted to?

z

Should her feet be able to touch the ground or only the pedals. If Her feet should touch the ground. Should it be just her tows or flat feet.
How high should the side wheels be? Should the bike be able to move from side to side, and how much?

Answer
sitting on seat and feet can go flat on ground=perfect height.

By "side wheels" do you men training wheels?
Assuming you do, they should be 4.5 to 5" across (high) and wobbling only a little bit so child gets feel for balancing--to learn how to balance.

(The "wobbling" will occur naturally. You needn't adjust "wobblocity")
Thus: "Training" wheels.
They'll put them on for you at bike shop.

I am getting a bike and I need one for my size. I am 5'2 tall. I need to know want itches or size of the bilke might explain for you. I using the bike for bike riding with my boys on our bike path and around the area has well. I be having a little trailer in the back you can use on the bike for pulling children. I have a three year old that still doesn't know how to ride his bike,

Answer
Actually, only kid's bikes are measured by wheel size. Frame size is used for adult bikes. Unfortunately, you don't mention what kind of bike you're getting. But, in general, you want a road bike you can easily stand over, flatfooted with 1" of room to spare. MTB bikes are usually bought in a smaller size than that.

Bike shops will be glad to ensure you a good fit for your new purchase.

What is a good bmx bike for a 13 year old?

Beer Can

I'm only a beginner, in fact I haven't even started yet. I can ride a bike and I am very coordinated. I'm only 5 feet tall, so take that into consideration. And I'm looking for quality, but affordable prices

Answer
Based on your age and request for affordable I did a search for you. I'm really stressing the affordable here, but trying to get good worked into the mix.

I did a brand neutral search, I set the upper price to $150, searched for BMX and looked for the lowest cost one that didn't make me want to blow chunks just looking at it, and I found one.

I found the Diamonback Viper.

It's not that great, lose ball BB, one piece crank, freewheel, and an all on steel plate for a chain wheel. It meets the affordable request you asked for and it is better than a Wal-Mart bike, though not by a lot.

For $50 more you can get a Session that has a better chain wheel and a cassette hub.

These are "rock bottom" bikes. These are better than buying something from Wal-Mart or Academy, but they're still not "good".

Right at $300 I found a Kink Launch which is getting out of the rock-bottom zone.

These are Internet prices. I guarantee unless you live in an expensive area like Beverly Hills you're going to find better deals than this locally than on the web, you're just going to have to do some hoofing it between bike shops and what have you.

You are better off looking for good deals on Craigslist than buying a new one for your first bike if you don't have a ton of cash. Some of these Old School BMX bikes are quite good, and if you find one in good shape you set yourself apart as having a cool classic. Often you'll find brand new bikes someone bought and decided not to use and just want rid of, or a spoiled rich kid who didn't want a Haro BMX like their parents got them, they wanted a Specialized MTB. Of course they sell the Haro when their parents buy them an MTB.

I put an example of a really awesome deal on Craigslist in my area I would snatch up in a second if I were in the market for a 20" BMX (my old large self rides 24" cruisers now)

I will be babysitting for the Summer,
and so far I have a 3 1/2 year old girl, a 1 1/2 year old girl, and a 4 year old boy on my list to babysit.

I'm used to sitting older children (above the age of 6), so I'm just wondering what fun ways I can keep them entertained so they can have fun over the Summer. (:

Thanks.

Answer
i babysit a lot as well and here is what i've found that works....
play doh, chalk, blocks, big legos, kid tv shows/movies, read them books!!!(kids i babysit always love it!), easy crafts(i.e. stickers and crayons--No sissors!), go to the park and play, go for a walk on training bike, bubbles, ring around the rosy, just running around and chasing them then letting them "chase" you, etc. just use whatever toys they have and play with them. you can't really play scheduled games becasue they dont understand how to play correctly.

here's what NOT to do....
hide and seek(they dont really understand how to play and you'll probably just lose them), messy crafts like paint, puzzles, board games

good luck!

Answer
you are in bicycle heaven in the bay area so maybe you should ask a bunch of people in the bike industry to see what they could do for you. maybe make a flyer and pass it around to the bike shops. talk to the managers and the shop workers. my husband was a messenger and a bike mechanic for years and the bike community is close i'm sure they could help you out in some way.

try handing out flyers at a critical mass or a turkey day ride. they have a huge one in sacramento. try bike co-ops and maybe infiltrating a century ride. lots of people with a lot of pull do those.

A friend just got me the child carrier seat for my bicycle and I need to know where to get a helmet. Thanks!
I have looked at Target, walmart, sports authority and none of them have helmets small enough for her.
I know it is not recommended to take them until they are one year of age however my daughter is walking on her own and I have spoke with her doctor and he thinks she is strong enough for me to take her.

Answer
It is not recommended that you take a child on a bike with you until they are 1 year or older . . . they are still developing good neck / back control and the weight of the helmet is not good for them.

http://www.bhsi.org/little1s.htm

Amazon has some helmets that you might be able to use when she is a bit bigger:

Anyone have a bicycle seat for baby that you love?

RearFace@1

I would love to get one for my 13 month old for this summer. Have the breeze in our hair and great exercise and freshness...I want the best for a good price, no more than $60 give or take. I am not sure what to look for. Any ideas or advice? I don't mind shopping online either, but I am not sure where to go and Google is just killin me today.

Also, a baby helmet too...?

Answer
I have absolutely no advice about what brand to get, I'm sorry. If you have a large sporting goods store near you that may be worth looking at. Chances are they would have some.

Mostly I'm just wanting to answer saying that I love the idea of a bicycle seat rather than a trailer. Everyone says that if you fall baby falls too, which is going to happen with a seat or a trailer. With a seat the baby is strapped in and protected on three sides like with a car seat. I'm more paranoid with the trailers. They make the bike longer, which means that you have more of an opportunity for a car or another bike to hit the trailer if they aren't paying attention. Plus if you fall on the bike the trailer is going to tip too, and often kids aren't as secured in them as they would be in a seat.

Here are two that I found on amazon. I think both look great, but for a younger toddler I would go with the one that has head support. The front mounted one looks like it would have better stability for the rest of the bike, but it looks a bit scary.
Good luck!

Looking for a quality bike for my beyond wonderful, eight year old niece moving up from a twenty inch bike?

Joseph G

I need advice on purchasing a quality bike for an eight year old girl. One who loves to ride. She is moving up from her twenty inch bike. Any suggestions on twenty-four inch wheel bikeshop bike that is under $180? Or on a department store/sporting goods store bike that is of the same quality as bike shop bike.Would prefer the cruiser type bike to the mountain bike type, but quality level and reliabilty are most important factors. Thanks for the help!

Answer
Excellent opportunity to buy a lightly used bike. Kids don't normally fit this size bike for more than 2 years. By the time they turn 10-11 yrs old, they will be in a 26 inch wheeled bike (unless they are short). With your budget, you will get a better bike too. A decent bike shop quality bike will be over 200US.

Regarding the first answer being too young for a 24? My boys were on very comfortably on 24" wheels at 7 yrs old. They looked like circus clowns on toy bikes when they tried to ride 20" wheeled bikes at that age (other than BMX).....but I would agree that a fitting would be in order, or at least go shopping with the kids height/proportions at hand so you know what to get.

hendsbeex

I have a 3 year old boy. On Saturday, we were in our back yeard playing around his toddler pool (it is no more than 4 inches deep, with maybe a diameter of 6 feet) when the little girl next door came over. She is maybe 6 or 7. She started playing with my son, which I have no problem with as she comes over quite often to push him around on his bike, or car or whatever. The next thing I know, 3 of this girl's friends come out of nowhere, and start splashing around in the pool, they were all a good 3 years older than my son, which basically forced my son out as he was by far the smallest. I sent all the kids out of my yard, including the first little girl. This upset my son, as he had no-one to play with. The little girl came back later in the afternoon, and I explained why I did what I did, and told her that she, and only she is welcome to come over and play with my son. He does have younger friends that he plays with in some of the groups that he is in.

Answer
Absolutely. It was the correct and wise course of action. You not only had to be protective of your son who could have accidentally gotten hurt by the bigger kids, but also look out for the safety of the other children and have consideration for their parents who might not have felt entirely comfortable with them being in a pool or even in another person's yard without their knowledge. It was unlikely that an accident would have happened with you standing right there and them being older, but children have drowned in small amounts of water, and I think you should always have the permission of each of the parents whenever you have a child younger than 10 in any kind of pool. Had one of the girls gotten hurt, you could have been held liable, morally and legally. When I was 13 I was babysitting my younger sisters when a friend of theirs from the neighborhood came over, and her parents and mine were really upset I let them go into the pool, and that's when my parents said that each parent had to know whenever a kid went into a pool and to give consent each & every time. My mom is a doctor who once had a 2 year old with severe neurological problems for life because she fell face-down in a toddler pool and couldn't get up. You have to be so careful with all that.

It doesn't sound like you yelled at the girls or were unkind to them, and that you took the time to explain to the neighbord girl that she was welcome at your home, and to make her understand that you weren't angry and didn't dislike her.

You handled it really well.

We are looking for bicycles for 10-and 12-year-olds and want reasonable quality without paying a fortune

Answer
"best"
"affordable"
"reasonable"
"fortune"

The odds of everyone here agreeing on the parameters for those vague terms are quite slim. Probably none.

Very few bikes for pre-teens cost a fortune. Except for a couple special edition jobs and one Italian road bike, I can't think of any. If $300/bike is a fortune, then I can't help you. If $300-500/bike is affordable, you'll have some choices at your local bike shop. Trek and Specialized are just two of the numerous manufacturers of high quality bikes that offer products for riders of every age.

Trek's MT240 lists for $549
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/kids/ages_9_12/mt240/

Trek's MT220 lists for $349
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/kids/ages_9_12/mt220/

Specialized has various Hotrock 24 models from $330 to $420

Other good makes to consider include Jamis and KHS among others. All of these better quality bikes come with good components, factory warranty, and service provided by an authorized dealer. Avoid department store bikes and you should be just fine.

What were those heavy steel-framed kids bicycles called that they had in schools back in the early 80s?

Not BMX-- they were made completely of solid metal (even the seats) and were very "clunky". A lot of kindergartens had them for the kids to use at recess.

Answer
Hm. There was no such thing as a commercially produced mountain bike until about 1985, so I'm going to assume that is not what you mean.

The predecessor of a mountain bike was called a "clunker" which were made out of older balloon-tired bikes. Then there was the "lightweight" which included a variety of different bikes including the Schwinn Varsity, many different 24" and 26" wheeled bikes with single speed, 3 speed, 5 speed and 10 speed... some even had 12 speed!

Of course, there was the 20" bike which included BMX bikes and those called by a variety of names including "high rise", "spyder" and "Sting Ray" models.

All of the bikes of this era and prior were heavy compared to today, but in my opinion much more care was taken to machine and assemble them which makes some of those 30 and 40 pound bikes MUCH friendlier and more efficient than many 20 pounders today.

Do you ride your bicycle with your toddler?

The Jolly

Do you use a child seat or trailer? What brand/style? Any complaints/praises?

I have been researching and reading reviews and have no clue what would be ideal for us.

Answer
We have a Chariot and its the best thing ever! Its a trailer that converts to a jogger (you can also buy skiing and hiking attachments). They are lightweight, convert in a snap, fold down flat to fit in your car (wheels come off too), and are top quality from materials to design to engineering.

We use it for biking and outdoorsy things like going to the beach, the zoo, or for a trek in the woods.

They are very pricey, but they hold up extremely well, and they hold their value so you can sell it after using it for 5+ years and still get at least 1/2 your money back, probably more. Used ones are VERY hard to find around here. I couldn't find used so I splurged and got new and I am not disappointed.

A good safe tricycle for a 2 year old?

Consider t

I've been searching for a tricycle for my almost 2 year old daughter. There are so many conflicting reviews, though! Have you bought a trike that worked well for your toddler? What do you recommend?

Answer
Instead of a trike, I bought my little one a bicycle, it had training wheels, and it was a little smaller than an average trike. My thinking, why bother with the trike ? She can learn how to ride on this tiny little bike, when she's comfortable, we'll take off the training wheels, and she can ride it as a regular bike. When she grows bigger, we can get a bigger bike. You wouldn't believe, how quickly she caught on, even faster than some of the neighbor kids that had trikes !! Of course, I waited until I was sure she could handle it, before I took the extra wheels off. In fact, I waited until she "told me" she was ready for it !!
