INNEEDOFAD

I babysit a newly 8 year old boy M-Th 7:30pm-7:30pm. The kid is severly overweight, about 2-3 times bigger than his classmates. His grandpa who is his main guardian is morbidly obese, has sleep apnea (where is spell check when you need it), a thyroid disorder, and possibly diabetes. Even with his health problems he does not seem to care what his grandchild eats and contributes to making it unhealthier by buy dozens of cupcakes, gallons of ice cream, mcdonalds/dominos for dinner 3/4 or more nights a week. I just watched the kid I watch eat a nacho lunchable, a cupcake, chocolate ice cream, a diet pepsi, three corn dogs, and dry cereal. This was all after he had dinner and all within 2 hours. What do I do?

Answer
Yikes. Take him for walks , ride bikes anything, as much as you can. Don't let him eat any if that junk when he is with you.
Teach him to read the serving sizes to get him to cut down on his own. Insist he eats at the table only so he does not snack by the tv etc.
Read children books to him about eating healthy.
Maybe he is bored and eats to pass the time. Can you help him find a hobby such as legos, drawing so his hand are busy.

What are the top brand names for kids shoes that are in style this school year?

JG78

I live in PA and my 8 year old son lives with his Father in VA and it's getting time for school to start and I always try to get him the brand names that are in style and as for shoes I wanted to know what brand shoes are in style for this school year.

Answer
It depends. What kind of stuff is your son into? My boys like to skateboard and ride bikes and stuff, so they always get DC's Etnies, DVS, Adio, Circa, Globe, Lakai, Osiris...shoes like that.

For more sporty or kind of Hip Hop, go for K-Swiss, Adidas, Nike, Reebok, Puma.

Shoes that never go out of style, Converse and Vans.

(By the way, you can get all of those name brand or popular shoes in sizes that small. My kids were wearing skate shoes before they could walk)

Good luck!

water pipes freeze, will my idea work...?

I rent a half shabby apartment, and the water pipes freeze when it's really cold. I thought about actually buying some of those long foam insulators ( the ones they use on kids bicycle handlebars ) and just work them around the pipes in the basement. I just thought it would be so much easier to apply than regular insulation that gets wet from condensation etc. would it work ?

Answer
It would most likely work, but you have to make sure the hole in the middle of the insulation is the same size as the outer diameter of the pipe. If there is space between the insulation and the pipe, that air will still drop, and potentially allow your pipes to freeze, inside the insulation. Your best bet is to buy the 6' lengths of insulation, at your local hardware store. There are different types, one is scored with a precut line, that you split open, and install around the pipe. This type requires that you use an additional tape to wrap the insulation. The other type is split, with adhesive applied to the edges. Upon installing it on the pipe, you peel the cellophane protector, and the glue from both edges, keeps the insulation in place. These come in different sizes, for different types of pipe. Make sure you buy the correct type for the pipe that you have. When installing this type insulation, cut angles, so you can completely cover all the pipe. Insulating the pipes, and not the joints, will increase the chance of a rupture at the exposed joints. Good luck to you, and stay warm!

is it legal to have kid seating at bike back in california?

jian l

if yes, what is the hardware requirement? and what is
the safety tips to carry a kid in bicycling?

Answer
A kid seat on the back of your bicycle is legal in California and a helmet is required. However, I strongly recommend against those seats. They make your bike top heavy and if you fall, your child falls with you. Your best bet is to buy a trailer to attach to your bike. They have roll cages and if your bike falls over, the trailer hitch has a pivot attachment which keeps the trailer upright. Also, if the trailer does happen to fall over, the roll cage (and helmet) will protect the child. Yes, trailers cost quite a bit more but ask yourself: Are you willing to sacrifice your child's life to save money?

What to use for a 14wk baby and 2 yr old in a bike trailer? Helmets too big and car seat won't fit!?

Aimee

I have a bike trailer for my two babies but I don't know how is best to keep my 14week old safest. A helmet won't fit until at least 18 months and her car seat won't fit in with my 2 year old as well :0( Don't want to be stuck in a stuffy, hot car all summer so would really like to keep fit and take them out on the bike! Help!! Thanks in advance :0)

Answer
The infant in the car seat cannot ride with the toddler -- so just get a bicycle child seat http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Classic-Bicycle-Child-Carrier/dp/B000ISXSSA for the toddler -- kid will be much happier being up there behind you and watching around the road. Also should be available at Target, locally.

I am planning on moving to San Antonio and want to know does the bus system go to the country?

I am planning on moving to SA very soon by summer of 2011 to be closer to my kids and do not have a car, I have to get there and know it has a bus system but really do not want to live in the city. Just wondering if I were to get a place in Von Ormy or Pleasanton if the bus goes outside of the city and anyone would know this question. I am not buying a car until after i get to SA I can survive traveling by my bike or the bus like I have been here in my small town.

Answer
I can only presume you mean San Antonio, TX USA. And yes, they do have a large public bus system known as VIA. The routes do extend to suburban areas but the further out from the city you were to live, the lessor the frequency & service hours are. I would recommend checking the VIA Website in relation to some areas you might consider living or working. Best of luck!

What kind of bike should I get?

Haro Heartland Ltd Comfort Bike '10 - $349.99

Diamondback Insight 1 700c Men's Hybrid Bike - $399.99

I want a bike that is good for long distances and that can handle my weight. I would attempt to stay on paved roads, but there is really no telling where I will end up. I am 6'4" and 220lbs. With that said, I was wondering if a 29er would be better.

Answer
Depends on what year of Diamondback - and I'm not kidding. The 2010 model uses a SRAM PG-820 8spd Cassette (11-32t). Key word being "cassette". The 2011 model uses a Shimano HG-20 7spd (12-28t) freewheel.

The cassette will have a lower 1st gear for pulling hills & a freehub set up - not a freewheel. Much stronger.

This type of bike is NOT intended for off-road use. It may handle a light trail of finely crushed gravel or packed earth at slower speeds. But I wouldn't take it purely "off-road". What makes me so sure? I OWN a 2009 Diamondback Insight.

I would like to start bike riding to shed some baby weight what are the best bike trailer/bike combos?

best cargo bikes kids on cargo - Low Top Tube Xtracycle Donor Frame? - Bicycles Stack Exchange

Yeah Momma

i need a bike and want to buy a bike trailer, what type of bike should be used?

Answer
- how much do you want to/can you spend?
- what kind of trailer - cargo or kid?
- how long and where do you want to ride (urban/country, flat/hilly/mountainous)?
- commuting or sports/training?
- what's your weight - and do you do any kind of sports?
- are you fixed on a bike/trailer combo, or would a (two or three wheeled) bakfiets be a practical alternative?

Unless you want to lay down at least 4k$/â¬, there's no sense in talking about 'best'. You can start thinking about 'good' (enough for everyday use) with 2k$/⬠and either the willingness to learn basic maintenance or a friendly LBS within reach.

As a short guide to what I'd consider best (I'll just throw in a few buzzwords, use google or come back here if you want to know more):
- steel frame, touring geometry, Rohloff dropouts
- Rohloff internal geared rear hub
- SON front hub generator
- Edelux front bike light, b&m rear light
- Magura hydraulic disc brakes
- disc brake rims, Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires in 26x2.00, DD stainless spokes
- Brooks leather saddle
- closed chain box, e.g. Hebie Chainglider

That'll cut down the yearly maintenance to the gear oil change and regular inspection (and occasional exchange) of brake pads and chain.

- Weber hitch
- brand trailer - for kids, Chariot or Croozer, for cargo, Roland or Carry Freedom

What are my best options for toting three kids around with my bike?

B

Is there a trailer for 3 kids? Would it be ok to have a "trail-a-bike" type option then connect a trailer to that? Or get a child seat plus the trailer? Kids are 4 mos, 2.5 yrs, and 5 yrs old.. The 5 yr old can ride a bike, but very slowly and not very far.. Thanks!

Answer
You have a few option, although I agree with those who mention 4 mos may be a little young for any kind of biking. The only way I would bike with infants is if I can either carry them very close to me, or if I can strap them into a reclined seat where they don't have to fully support their head while going over bumps etc.

In Denmark they often ride with the youngest in a front basket or cargo bay laying down in blankets.

I've tried my kids in trailers at 9 mos and found it didn't work for me with any of them because I couldn't watch how they were doing and couldn't attend to their needs at all without stopping, dismounting etc. AND until over a year they didn't do well enough with head control. The trailers actually ride fairly jouncy and bumpy because the kids are sitting right on top of the wheels.

Moving on....

I have seen people do the tag along and the trailer, but for regular use it seems to long and unwieldy to me.

I'd go the cargo bike / long tail route: Madsen Cycles has a model that seats 4 with seat belts (takes the optional extra seat to get to 4 - standard is 2) http://www.madsencycles.com/

I'm 15 and my brother is 12. My parents just never taught us how to ride bikes when we were younger. (My dad passed away when we were really young and my mom had a lot of other issues. We live with an uncle now.) At a garage sale my brother and I bought bikes, because they were really cheap and we really wanted to do fun things this summer. Today we tried, and it was REALLY hard. I know this sounds stupid, but how can 2 older kids learn how to ride a bike?

Answer
Take turns holding the bike while one pedals slowly. Hold till the rider can balance on his own. It doesn't take long. The holder walks along side or in the rear.

The same way young children do. Practice.

It's really not an issue. Older children and adults learn to ski and skate all the time, even though in some countries everyone learns as a young child.

My son has been been riding a pedal bike without training wheels since he was three. He has a Honda PW50. We have a helmet and riding pants although the riding pants are getting small as well as elbow pads and shin guards. At this point he is not out riding on trails mostly around the dirt and gravel parking lot or fields. He wore down the rubber on a pair of boots this last weekend they were not riding boots.

Answer
most sites that sell online have gear for small kids. Btosports.com has a range and also a sizing chart that would be helpful.

Make sure you spend the money on a pair of proper mx boots as I have seen some very nasty burns from kids not wearing the right gear. They only have to drop the bike and be pinned under it.

How do you stop a bike chain from rusting?

Dyslexia o

All my kids have bikes. We have no room in the house for them and no garage or carport. THe chains have all gotten pretty rusty from the rain and stuff.
How can we get rid of the rust?
How can we prevent it from happening again?

Answer
First, if the bikes aren't covered or protected for example under a porch, or in your basement, or an unused room buy some heavy plastic sheets (8X8) at your local Ace Hardware and cover them. Second, buy some WD40 lubricant and spray this on the chain. Then while holding the rear wheel off the ground crank the pedals and wipe the oil and dirt off the chain using an old rag (repeat several times). Lastly lubricate the chain with a good light weight oil. Suggestions "3 & 1" oil, light machine oil, or SAE Grade 5W or 10W motor oil. You don't want a heavy coat. A good light coat should do it. Avoide lithium grease as it collects dirt.
