Do you ride your bicycle with your toddler?

The Jolly

Do you use a child seat or trailer? What brand/style? Any complaints/praises?

I have been researching and reading reviews and have no clue what would be ideal for us.

Answer
We have a Chariot and its the best thing ever! Its a trailer that converts to a jogger (you can also buy skiing and hiking attachments). They are lightweight, convert in a snap, fold down flat to fit in your car (wheels come off too), and are top quality from materials to design to engineering.

We use it for biking and outdoorsy things like going to the beach, the zoo, or for a trek in the woods.

They are very pricey, but they hold up extremely well, and they hold their value so you can sell it after using it for 5+ years and still get at least 1/2 your money back, probably more. Used ones are VERY hard to find around here. I couldn't find used so I splurged and got new and I am not disappointed.

I need to tone. What are some good exercises for being inside the house?

Dawn R

I have two toddlers so I can not go outside running or anything in this cold weather. I do not have a treadmill. I am happy with my weight, I do not need to lose anymore. I just want to tone everything and make it tighter. Please give me some exercises or dvd's or something that you have done and were successful with. Thanks!!

Answer
I am a mom as well and the reason I started training in home in because I know how hard it is to get away. I train other people in there homes now and they love it. here are a couple of dvd's and an exercise routine that I have given some of them. Gilad's total body fitness( he is on the fitness network, the quick start dvd for pilate's by Gaiam, and turbo jam multi pack( a little more advanced).
You cannot just do situps to help get rid of love handles or make your stomach flat, and you cannot get thinner thighs by just doing workouts for your thighs. If you were to look at a muscle anatomy picture, you will find that what we call love handles are simply our gluteus medius which goes up and connects to the external obliques and goes down to and forms the gluteus maximus which is connected to your lats. Doing the following will help with the entire area to tighten and tone up your muscles and help burn the fat around them. Hope all of this helps do lunges, stepup kickbacks, walking downhill, running, leg raises without weight or very light weight, yoga, push ups, lat pull downs, pull ups rowing, and deadlifts. All of this combined with a proper diet full of lean protein and carbs, and you should be in business. If you need anymore help email me. Do 3-4 sets and 15-20 reps of light âno weights at all.

When riding, I usually glance back every few minutes, but sometimes my daughter starts nodding. I stop and we take a water break. She gets sleepy because of the cool breeze, the rhythmic feelings of the bicycle, and the incessant visual stimulation, but is it alright to keep peddling with her head down? She's strapped in, has a safety bar on her child seat on the bike, and we both have helmets.

Answer
I'm pretty sure that's when its time to call it a day and put her down for a nap..

Where can I get a helmet for my 8 month old baby?

Jenna S

A friend just got me the child carrier seat for my bicycle and I need to know where to get a helmet. Thanks!
I have looked at Target, walmart, sports authority and none of them have helmets small enough for her.
I know it is not recommended to take them until they are one year of age however my daughter is walking on her own and I have spoke with her doctor and he thinks she is strong enough for me to take her.

Answer
It is not recommended that you take a child on a bike with you until they are 1 year or older . . . they are still developing good neck / back control and the weight of the helmet is not good for them.

http://www.bhsi.org/little1s.htm

Amazon has some helmets that you might be able to use when she is a bit bigger:

Dev!Ls_AnG

I want a neighborhood with low crime rates, great schools, and a low population. A place where kids can ride their bikes and ice cream trucks go by...and there's oak trees. Kind of like the neighborhood from desperate housewives. I grew up in the city and it wasn't that great.

Answer
way too many to list.

How do I keep my kids bike chain from always coming off?

Dyslexia o

The bike is new only a couple months old,I have no tools and the neighbor is always putting it back on. Is their a way to keep it on?
Its a cheap walmart bike.

Answer
Try to take it back to WalMart and see if they can fix it. If not, get your money back. The rear wheel needs to be straight so that the cog is aligned with the chain ring and tensioned tight enough to hold the chain in place but not so tight as to damage the chain.

Without tools, you can't fix this yourself.

First, thanks for your time! I don't even know what they are called, but I have one of the things that hook to your bike that I can haul my twins around in. I need to buy new tires for it, and I am totally clueless about where to find them! Help!

Answer
If you are talking a kidde trailer, the tires are sold at the bike shops.

There is a bunch of numbers written on the tires, like 4076 or 16x 1.50 .

many use 16 inch tires

(see site below)

Call the family bike store and ask if they have that size.

If stores a long ways away, shop on the net

Why do people HATE New Jersey?

best kids bike shop nyc on best sellers the new york times best sellers children s books ...
best kids bike shop nyc image

KLD it.

I personally think it is a gorgeous, diverse state. Yeah we have our slummy parts, but who doesnt? People fail to see the miles and miles of gorgeous beaches, farmlads, acres of pine trees, and the Appalachin Mountains. Plus, your never, ever, more then an hours drive away from anything you want. It has 4 of the richest counties in the country, and the shopping capitol of the world!

Yet there is never any shortage of people ready to say they hate New Jersey, that it smells, it's dirty, and it's dangerous, all simply not true! I hate when people from PA try to say "we should blow up NJ and give PA a beach, it smells when ever we cross the border." (to them I like to say, because you don't know anything better then cow sh*t)

My question is, why do people hate NJ? and for those of you who talk trash about it, have you ever actually been here? or past the the highways you have travelled on?

Answer
I moved to New Jersey from Virginia about ten years ago. I was surprised at all of the beautiful countryside, the mountains, the forests, and all of the beautiful places. But in general, my experience in NJ was generally negative compared to other places.

For example, In Virginia I lived at the beach. I used to spend a lot of time at the ocean. In New Jersey, I had to pay every time I wanted to go to the beach. I was shocked when I first heard that and I'm still shocked ten years later. It's a huge turn-off when you're used to going to any beach you want on either coast without even considering a fee.

Also, the cost of living is a total shock unless you're coming from DC, Boston, or parts of California. You can easily pay $350K for a two bedroom cape cod if you don't want to commute for an hour. I had 4 kids so two bedrooms didn't cut it. And my wife raises our kids, so we had only one income, meaning $350K was out of the question, yet we needed at least 4 bedrooms, not two.

And finally, I had a hell of a time whenever I wanted pizza after midnight, people in stores and in traffic were generally unfriendly to strangers in comparison to most of the country, prices on dining, furniture, and clothing was much higher, there was no local broadcast news - only NYC, or Philly in the south, I could go for miles and never find a convenience store if I didn't know where to look, NJ vehicle inspections suck, the major highways had tolls, and for all the talk about being close to NYC culture, most people in NJ rarely ever went to a show in the city or any of the other cultural events.

I recently moved to what most NJ residents would consider a nightmare. It's a large midwestern city. I have beautiful manicured boulevards, I'm in a beautiful new house that would cost over $1 million dollars in NJ, I have more restaurants than NJ ever offered, at a much lower price, my property taxes are 1/3, I can take my kids to NFL, NBA, etc. without traffic and without hurting my pocketbook, I get almost as many national performance acts at half the cost, food is cheaper, clothes are cheaper, the school system is the best in the state, and people are FRIENDLY. Kids ride their bikes in the streets and neighbors sit out front in the evenings and share their lives. People are walking their dogs and stopping to meet or catch up with others.

For me, NJ was a stepping stone. I'll miss friends, I'll miss some beautiful countryside, but otherwise, compared to many other places I didn't find it a good place to live.

Best place to live in New York, NY for young family?

502EGL

We will be a mid to late 20's family with one kid and one dog relocating from FT. Benning, Ga. to New York, NY area. Wife is an accountant, I will seek employment with NYPD. Looking for a place that is relatively safe, good schools, house prices that match our jobs, backyard would be nice. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Unless your wife, as an accountant, makes buckets of money -- you can forget about Manhattan. The average one-bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood is $2,000/mo rent. If you're looking to buy -- it's about 1,100 per square feet -- about 1 million for less than 1,000 square feet of space, plus taxes, maintenance and utilities. Ridiculously expensive.

Great alternatives to rent or buy are:

In Queens: Forest Hills, Astoria, Long Island City and Flushing.

Forest Hills is beautiful, extremely safe, there's plenty to do, it's only a short 25 minute train ride to midtown Manhattan, and it's very affordable to buy and rent.

Astoria is just across the bridge from Manhattan (a 5 minute train ride to Manhattan). Esthetically it's not much and it is pricier than most places in Queens because it is so close to the city.

Flushing is an Asian neighborhood and is pretty up-and-coming in terms of development. New things are springing up there left and right, but I certainly would not want to raise a child there.

Long Island City is very nice and culturally diverse. It's relatively cheap and you're pretty close to the city (only one train stop away). The only problem is that you will have to rely on the 7 train to get there (which is not very reliable) and it's the only train. If service goes out, you're cabbing it.

If I were you, I would focus on Forest Hills. When NYC was being developed they chose Forest Hills to be like a park with lots of trees and grass (which is great for kids to go and play). It's very family-focused, and there's plenty to do for everyone. There's a huge park (Flushing Meadow Park) with a lake in the center of it where you can rent paddle boats). Flushing Meadow Park has a few tennis courts, a basketball court, a few playgrounds, a place to have a picnic and BBQ, and there's also a place to rent bikes to bike around. It's about a 10 minute walk from Forest Hills. In Forest Hills, they have playgrounds, lost of places to walk, a Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, lots of shopping, etc. It's pretty awesome.

Good luck!

Its vintage looking with the curved handle bars. Its from about the 80's and its an olive green and cream color. The cleaned the crome and removed all the rust. Also the tubes, tires (it does not have white wall tires), bake cables, and bike chain are brand new. My parents bought me a candy apple red vintage cruiser with white wall tires for my birthday, so I was thinking of selling my old one.

Thanks!
I sold it for $150 b*tches! haha

I want a cheap bicycle to get around Buenos Aires. About how much could I expect to pay?

Wilson Man

I'll be living somewhere in the Belgrano/Palermo area. First of all, actually, if I were to get a bicycle, would that be a safe option for getting around or is street traffic too dangerous for cyclists? And second, how much would it cost to buy a cheap bike, not necessarily brand new. Would it be possible to get one for under $50 USD?

Answer
Forget the bike!

Probably will end up costing a lot, difficult for storage at your Palermo/Belgrano apartment!

Plus, as said here before, you will end up below a bus in NO time. And I am NOT kidding!

BUT, the plus is Buenos Aires and of course both in Palermo and Belgrano is that you have, several very in-expensive and (quite) reliable public means of transportation.

1* Sub-way (and I do not mean the sandwich!)
2* Buses
3* Taxis
4* Trains (even from Belgrano, that will take you down-town in a jiffy for less than a ARG1.00!!!)
5* Remises (private company taxis)

How to balance a Schwinn conversion bike trailer/jogging stroller?

Amanda S

I just purchased a bike trailer and I can't get my bike to stay up while putting the kids in it. I thought maybe the front wheel was supposed to be on and it did help with support perfectly, but after looking it up it's only supposed to be used for the jogging stroller. How can I balance my bike while strapping the kids into the trailer?

Answer
Have you tried just lying the bike down on the left side, it would be better then knocking it over.

What's the best bicycle for my kids to learn to ride without training wheels?

Gina W

My husband says we should get a lighter weight bike for my daughter but I think that would be even more likely to fall over. Is there a brand of bike that has a low center of gravity or something similar that would make it easier to learn to ride? She's 6 and has a rather heavy "Cool Ride" by Dynacraft.

Answer
Your husband is right - a lighter bike would be easier to balance on: less weight = less work to balance. With a heavy bike she has to balance her weight plus the bike. Unfortunately though, they don't really make lightweight bikes for kids - they all seem to be horribly heavy.

A low center of gravity might help a bit, but you're not going to find a bike like that - all the weight goes into the structure, and anyway, the heaviest thing she's balancing is herself - the bike is only a minor part of the weight.

What you may want to do is get a 'balance bike'. These bikes train the child to balance - they have no pedals and the kid runs the bike along. The idea is to get the child to pick his/her feet up and start to learn to balance. After that, you can buy her a regular bike and she'll already have the balancing skill.

I'm 41 years old and I'm 5'7" with a short 28" inseam. I like dual purpose dirt bikes, but I can't rest both feet on the ground. That's a problem at stop lights. How can I lower the bike for very minimal dollars? I don't want a kids bike either.

Answer
you can get a seat that is not as thick, or you can change shocks to a shorter shock, but that will mess up your suspension geometry. i suggest you get use to it or get a different bike.

P.S. you could also get a fat woman to set on back, but remember to wear a helmet so no one knows who you are.

How do you stop a bike chain from rusting?

Dyslexia o

All my kids have bikes. We have no room in the house for them and no garage or carport. THe chains have all gotten pretty rusty from the rain and stuff.
How can we get rid of the rust?
How can we prevent it from happening again?

Answer
First, if the bikes aren't covered or protected for example under a porch, or in your basement, or an unused room buy some heavy plastic sheets (8X8) at your local Ace Hardware and cover them. Second, buy some WD40 lubricant and spray this on the chain. Then while holding the rear wheel off the ground crank the pedals and wipe the oil and dirt off the chain using an old rag (repeat several times). Lastly lubricate the chain with a good light weight oil. Suggestions "3 & 1" oil, light machine oil, or SAE Grade 5W or 10W motor oil. You don't want a heavy coat. A good light coat should do it. Avoide lithium grease as it collects dirt.

What do kids aged 3-10 like and dislike?

best bikes for kids age 10 on best sellers the new york times best sellers children s books ...
best bikes for kids age 10 image

Anna Banan

I am making a client profile for my Product Design class but I have kinda run out of ideas as to what kids aged 3-10 (both boys and girls) will like and dislike. It's meant to be things like animals, activities, colours, stuff like that. Thanks in advance xx

Answer
It all depends on their personal preference. Not all kids like the same things. However, some things that my kids like are:

3 & 4 year old male

Animals- They have liked all animals that they have came in contact with so far. Some of their favorites are dogs, cats, elephants, worms and bugs.

Activities- They like to play with almost any toys including cars, blocks, dolls, guns, balls and any other toy. They like to fingerpaint, color, cut and glue things, make playdough and play with it, paint toast, draw, playing in dirt, skating, riding bikes, do puzzles, blow bubbles, draw with chalk, play sports, sing, play on swing sets and in sand boxes, play in/with water, dance and listen to music. They like to pretend play like pretending to be cops and robbers, doctors, teachers, mommy and daddy and lots of other things.

Colours- They like all different colors especially bright colors.

Girls in that age group that I have been around seem to like the same things with a few exceptions maybe.

5-6 old boys

I've only been around 1 boy of that age so far. He liked the same things that the 3 & 4 year old do. He also liked going for walks in the mountains and woods, playing with action figures.

5-6 year old girls

A lot of the same things as above unless they are really girly. Girly girls like playing with barbies and other dolls, playing with pretend makeup and nail polish, dressing up as princesses and other people. They also like doing some of the things mentioned above like playing with bubbles, jump ropes, playing with toys, reading, music, dancing and playing house, teachers and doctors.

7-10 year old

I don't know a lot about kids this age but I do have two family members within this age range. They like to do the activities mentioned above but would rather play cops and robbers, fire fighters, police officers or cowboys and indians instead of pretending to be teachers and doctors. They like to go on nature walks, play in the dirt, wrestle, play on swing sets, play video games, watch tv, play with friends, race and many more things. The animals and colours they like depend on personal preference as it does with every age. Young kids tend to like bright colors though.

What are different kinds of awards to give kids on the motocross team I coach?

Just wonde

I am coaching a team for kids from 10-15 years old and want to give out awards at the end of the season...like MVP. What are some other awards I could give out?
I do plan to have an award for every racer

Answer
Get in touch with the local importers who deal with bike stuff. Where I one such is called monza imports and ask for some freebies. Also local bike shops and get stickers and odds and ends that don't cost much and do up some grab bags so all the kids can have one.

Don't just give out 'most improved' and such as while it is great to be achieving I find sometimes this only focusses on one or two riders and they get the pats on the back the whole way through. Did anyone have a big off in training as you could give out a 'bent handlebars award' One of the clubs I am involved with actually has this and it really is a set of bent handlebars. So make a few fun awards like this as well.

A lot of coaches I know get the kids to balance on their bikes and try to have a slow race. Those with good balance can stay upright with the bike basically not moving for ages. See who is best at this and give them an award. So you could make the end of year a fun things as well. Have a race where they have to start by putting their boots on before running to their bike and doing a lap. Again you can award a prize for it. You can do a tag team race where you put the riders in groups spreading the ability out and making sure each group has a 50cc bike to slow them down. See who gets over the finish line first with each member of the group doing a lap.

This way the day is fun and the kids go home, some with real achievement awards and others with just a fun award.

my little brother has never had a big birthday present, and he is turning 13. he loves dirt bikes and currently rides my boyfriends pit bikes around when we go out to the track or riding at a parking lot. for his birthday this year i want to get him started with his gear and hopefully get him to start saving for a bigger bike so that he can learn how to ride. i would love a list of things that could help me get started. thank you!

Answer
There is a lot of stuff to dirt biking but some basics for gear that you wanted to get him would be
helmet
goggles
chest protector
gloves
jersey
pants

Thats the basic saftey equipment. This stuff can be pretty expensive and start to add up. But that stuff will make him feel like he is a pro.

Is dirt bike racing only for younger kids or can people in their 20's start in it?

skye

I know someone who always wanted to race dirt bikes, but never got the chance. He's in his 20's now, but is that too old to get started in the sport?

Answer
NO,their are 60 yr oldes that do their first race in the 450 class. It is always better so start when your young but it depends on your skill. If its his first time riding a bike and has no skill i would suggest not racing, all he would do is get hurt and suck.

I am looking for a good toddler seat for my bike that goes infront of me?

I want a seat for my bike for my son to ride on but I'm looking for the kind that goes in front of me. I can't find one anywhere. What is a good brand and does any one know what the weight limit is?

Thanks!

Answer
Wee rider is the only brand name that I'm aware of. They are pretty expensive though. Weight limit is 18 kg (40 lb).

There are a few no name nock offs that are cheaper you can usually find these on Ebay.

Fitting one of these will make it hard to climb. I also expect you might have to adjust your pedaling "knee" style.

They would probably be fine for short trips and you will enjoy chatting with the lad more.

My tip would be to talk louder and get a trailer. There is a heap more room for the accompanying toddler baggage and they don't effect your bikes handling anywhere near as much.

I'm not keen on the rear mount mainly because the child's view is dominated by the parents bum.

Both the "on bike" options are probably safer if you need to ride in heavy traffic.

Tips for babysitting two six year olds: a boy and a girl?

Hello, I'm 16 and not really gifted with kids, but I promised a friend of my mother's that I'd watch her kids. Does anyone have links or tips that would be useful? Their mother said the girl is extremely easygoing, but apparently the boy is a tougher challenge. I've only met the girl once and never spoken to the boy, so I'm not sure of what I should expect.

We'll have about five hours together.

Answer
Well I have a 6 yr old son and at this age they'll be quite willing to interact with anything you want to do. They love board games like snakes & ladders and junior monopoly, they love kids tv, computer games, colouring, reading, playing outside on bikes etc so there's plenty of options there. Just make sure they're fed and watered and that you all have a good time, don't let them run rings around you, a 6 year old is more switched on than you may think.....you're the boss!

I am moving to Stone Mountain, GA really soon, does anyone know anything about it?

bride to b

I've never been. I'm 28, married with a 3 yr old and 6 yr old and am planning for another. the houses seem really cheap, but is there alot of old people living there or is it ghetto...are the schools nice?

Answer
If you stay in the Gwinnett County area it will probably be a little safer. Your kids will LOVE Stone Mountain Park. I grew up very close in Tucker Ga. You can see fireworks on July 4th from your house or very close by. There are bike trails also. The little town is very cute. Nice little restaurants, ice cream, German bakery. Just be sure to research before you move in. Some areas are not great. Good luck!

i dont thing it matters tbh! theres nothing wrong with wearing a bikini at a young age.. its your opinion that really matters thgh!

Parents of two year olds- Do you feel like you have failed some days with your toddler?

Bard's Bab

After a trying day like I had today with my two year old, I feel so bad. I've alreadly been through this stage with my other three older girls, but this has been such a challenge. Anyone have any similar feelings? What did you do on bad days to feel better?

Answer
Any parent who says they have not felt this way is either fibbing or clueless.

Everyone has not so spectacular days when you just manage to make it through the day without totally loosing it. Especially trying to deal with a toddler while managing three other children has to be a HUGE challenge.

On the days that mommy was less than parent of the year... we would head to McDonalds playland. Especially in the winter when we could not get out and play my friend and I would pack up the kids, head to Micky Ds and sip our coffee while the kids ran around and around.... another trick was to head to the movies at the $2.00 theater (not first run movies, but there was usually something for the kids and they were occupied for almost 2 hours). Another great get away was to go bike riding because I could put both kids in the pull along cart and they were totally happy to hang out while I got some seriously needed exercise (but I dont know if that would work with 4).

The one thing both my best friend and I agree on is that if we were having a bad day we told the kids that. Today mommy is feeling stressed out (or whatever word you want)..... and if we yelled, or grouched, or whatever we always remembered to say Im sorry I didnt mean to ______, mommy is just not having a good day. It helped us feel not so bad about it and also was a good example to the kids about saying sorry and that sometimes you have good days and sometimes you dont.

On those not so great mommy days reward yourself once all the kids are ducttaped into their beds (JUST KIDDING) with a bubble bath, watching a tv show instead of doing dishes, or something to say 'HEY - at least noone died today'

Hang in there - very very soon, sooner than any mommy wants to admit, our kids will be grown and gone and we will be wishing we had even the not so great mommy days back.

How do you make a bicycle trailer?

Meady

I am 14 and i wanted to know how to make a push-bike trailer, made out of wood, as it is close to hard rubbish time and i would like to collect some rubbish. If you know how to make it , please reply to this question!

Answer
The important parts of a trailer are the wheels and the hitch. The in between part is what makes it useful but you can tie things on with rope or attach a large plastic bin - like a rubbermaid style bin, or a clothes basket... but that can be done after.

Wood is a pretty heavy material and not strong in the ways you need for a bike. Using steel welded together from old bikes is best. Also you could use chopped up old bikes if you don't weld or have metal tools by using a simple plumbing tube cutter and hose clamps.

However, if you insist on using wood... you can be creative.

First you definitely need bike wheels. Try to find an old maybe even broken - children's bike. You need 2 wheels of the same size. Smaller wheels are stronger than bigger wheels so kids bikes are perfect. Also they are much cheaper and thrown away more often so you are more likely to find them.

Next you need something like a bike fork to mount the wheels in. This could be as simple as using the fork from the kids bike you got the wheel from - and then finding another matching fork from an identical kids bike. Finding matching scrap bikes is sometimes hard though. And it isn't wood. If you are using wood you basically have to make something similar to a fork but out of wood. You could use two beams of wood of the same size on either side of the wheel - then drill a hole for the axle in each size - you can drill both holes or even all 4 (for both wheels) all at the same time to make them match up. You will need either very strong wood or thick wood and it may take some figuring out to have it strong but thin enough for the axle to have the bolt fit on the other side.

Now for the decisions. How big a trailer do you want? I suggest basing your design around the container you are going to use. Do you have a large plastic bin of a certain size? Metal or wood would also do but would be heavier/stronger.

For instance, If you have a wooden bin or crate it might be strong enough to be integral to the bike trailer frame. Then you just attach the wheels with the forks to either side of the crate. Put the wheel in the middle of the crate so that your trailer will be balanced in the middle with the wheels carrying the weight. Have the crate be oriented with the opening at the top (of course) and the wheels in the middle of the longer sides so that the trailer is longer than it is wide. Place the Wheels such that the ground clearance underneath the trailer is about 6 inches. The lower you can put the mass to the ground the more stable and balances the trailer will be. However, you need about 6 inches of clearance to go over bumps in the road - etc.

If you are going to use a plastic (or other material) bin/crate/basket/bucket that is not strong enough to form the frame of the trailer you will have to make a frame for the bin to sit on top of or in. This could be a rectangle that supports the bin from the edges. Or it could support the bin from underneath with a U shape. It depends on the material you use. Mount the wheels in the centre on the long sides with about 6" of underneath clearance just as you would if the bin/crate were part of the frame.

Now you will have an almost finished trailer than should be balanced if you hold it. Now test it out and load something in it. Test to see if it is strong enough or you have to add more structure.

Next you make the arm which attaches the trailer to the hitch on your bike. Steel or wood this is pretty simple. Attach in to the middle on (what you decide is) the front of your trailer that you have so far. The easiest place to pull the trailer from is from the seat post. So you basically just need an arm that goes from the top/front of the bin support frame towards just lower than your seat. This should have a curve in it or even a right angle. You need to allow space for the wheel to pass underneath the bar. You need 6" clearance there also because as you ride a bike and turn or go over bumps that distance gets closer.

Finally you have to add the hitch. The hitch could be very complicated if you want it to be very convenient. But since you are using wood we will keep it simple. The easiest place to attach the trailer hitch to your bicycle is to your seat post. There are lots of options but it needs to wrap around the seat post. You could use old bicycle inner tube or bicycle tire to make a flexible linkage. Or you could drill a seat post sized hole in your thick wood. Keep in mind the trailer has to pivot in all directions ideally - up/down, side to side, and twisting. so you have to be creative.

You might also consider attaching the trailer hitch instead to a bike rear rack or "rat trap" style rear race rack. If you have one on your bike already. This will probably not be as strong as attaching to the seat post but it may be easier. If you do that make sure the pivot point that you attach to is exactly above the centre of the rear bicycle wheel because that will make it work b

Hi, I'm a New Zealander.

I come from a fairly well off family 'Both my parents have pretty well paying jobs'. I'm 14, going on 15. I use my bike for transport almost everywhere (within 2 hours bike) as well as for exercise and recreation. I use my bike more then once a day, and am quite experienced.

The only problem is for the past 3 years, I've been stuck on a stupid $150(NZ, Abt $100USD) bike from K-mart. Before that I was on a $100NZ Warehouse bike. I've been on my friends bikes and I know my level far surpasses the ability of my bike. (It's useless and junk).

Now my father thinks that buying a $700 bike (Newest 2008 Design $450USD) is far too much. He reckons that it's almost no difference from my $100 bike (Which is useless, breaks every other day, drives like a brick, Useless gears, seat & suspension, etc, etc) While I think its a massive difference. I think that this bike is a good investment to be used for a long time to come.

Do you think I am right or my father is?
Also a big plus of this bike is that I almost never bug my parents to take me places, unlike most of my friends, I independently get to almost everywhere on my own without them being my personal chauffeur service.

My Father reckons a bike standard price is $100, and $300 is already a luxury. I think that both of them are junk, But he doesn't share the same view
Also, how can I convince him to let me buy it?

Answer
If you were the offspring of M R or myself, obviously you would have a decent bike already.

In your father's defense, he may be thinking of you as a little kid yet, and remembering all the things you lose and outgrow on a daily basis..

If you haven't hit your big growth spurt yet, then you're due. Getting you a nice bike now might be money poorly spent. Recalling my son's first nice mountain bike, even though we got one a little too big for him, in 6 months he couldn't ride it. He grew from 5'6" to 6'1" (he's now 6'3" at age 25). I made him buy the next one.

Somewhere in that period, I bought him a nice pair of Air Jordans as a reward for good grades. He outgrew them in a couple of weeks. Fortunately, they were my size.

Maybe, just maybe, if you and your dad are around the same size now, you might be able to work that angle.... he gets the bike when you outgrow it.
----
Wow, McG, you reminded me. My dad never bought me a bike EVER. Even when we were little, he made us save birthday money and allowances for bikes! Sort of a fiscal responsibility lesson! All those memories of that Sears 3-speed that took me everywhere through high school and college.....

what was schooling like in nz in 1960s?

Q.

Answer
Readin, ritin and rithmetic was the go.
Warm half pint bottles of milk every day.
The cane and strap for the naughty kids.
Lines.
You could have a Christmas Party without offending anyone.
We still used words like Golliwog without fear.
I never heard of a Teacher abusing anyone. (Corporal punishment was not abuse)
You could walk or bike to School and get there without being offered a lolly.
Everybody spoke English.
You respected your Teacher.
In all my School years throughout the 60's I never saw or heard of students bringing any kind of weapons to class to use on other kids.
Bullying---just didnt happen.
Swapping your sangers with the other kids.
The sweet smell of that purple ink they copied all the worksheets with.
Using an inkwell and nib pen.
Assembly and singing the National Anthem.
PRIDE.
All of which has been taken away by do gooding fools who think they know better.
Schools today?
Glad I never went to 1.
