How good is Trek 800 bike for adult just to ride around for recreation?

best kids bike 14 image

4Rd

I have the one from 1995 or 1996, and my girl friend keep telling me to "get rid of it" and "buy a new one". Then she flashes off her new Trek bike she just bought last year.

I do not see why I should get rid of my bike and buy a new one when I still enjoy my bike. It looks quite new as I have not ridden that much. She say its for kid's bike size 26" tire....

Should I listen to her ?

Answer
Your girlfriend doesn't know what she's talking about. Back in '96 that bike sold for $294.99. Not exactly cheap for 14 years ago. If you like it - ride it - enjoy it. Kid's bike tires run in the 12" 16" & 24" sizes. Once into 26" wheels, bikes are measured by frame size & will fit anyone from 5' tall to 6' 6" tall.

Are there any good camping places to take kids 10-14 in Missouri?

MommaDoo

We want to take our kids who have never camped somewhere family oriented. My husband and I both grew up tent camping.

Answer
We live in the Missouri Ozarks and have 5 children ages 9, 11, 12, and two 14 year olds. Our favorite place to take our family is Alley Springs campground on the Jacks Fork river. It is about 6 miles west of Eminence. It offers plenty of sites, some with electric, hot showers, flat level sites with paved roads for bike riding, and a good swimming hole. About 1/2 mile away is the Alley Springs Mill and spring with two hiking trails, one that goes around the spring area, and then a more difficult one that goes up to a lookout that is above the spring. It is a beautiful place. Hope this helps!

What are different kinds of awards to give kids on the motocross team I coach?

Just wonde

I am coaching a team for kids from 10-15 years old and want to give out awards at the end of the season...like MVP. What are some other awards I could give out?
I do plan to have an award for every racer

Answer
Get in touch with the local importers who deal with bike stuff. Where I one such is called monza imports and ask for some freebies. Also local bike shops and get stickers and odds and ends that don't cost much and do up some grab bags so all the kids can have one.

Don't just give out 'most improved' and such as while it is great to be achieving I find sometimes this only focusses on one or two riders and they get the pats on the back the whole way through. Did anyone have a big off in training as you could give out a 'bent handlebars award' One of the clubs I am involved with actually has this and it really is a set of bent handlebars. So make a few fun awards like this as well.

A lot of coaches I know get the kids to balance on their bikes and try to have a slow race. Those with good balance can stay upright with the bike basically not moving for ages. See who is best at this and give them an award. So you could make the end of year a fun things as well. Have a race where they have to start by putting their boots on before running to their bike and doing a lap. Again you can award a prize for it. You can do a tag team race where you put the riders in groups spreading the ability out and making sure each group has a 50cc bike to slow them down. See who gets over the finish line first with each member of the group doing a lap.

This way the day is fun and the kids go home, some with real achievement awards and others with just a fun award.

Is it hard to learn to ride a bike as an adult?

805gabe

I never learned to use one as a kid. Now I kind of want to learn because cars are so expensive when you add up gas and insurance.

Answer
As an adult, it may take you 5-10 minutes to learn. You will fall a few times but not big deal.

I have already test road the Trek 6700 and liked it. Looking at reviews, it seems like the components arent that great though. Any suggestions as to other bikes I should check out in that same price range?

Answer
All bikes in that range will have similar components (lx/some xt or equivalent), unless you find one on sale. I like to look at last years model because you can usually find one at 30% off the current retail.

The one thing you failed to mention is what kind of riding you are looking to do, and where. All Mountain, XC, Downhill, freeride, dirtjump, cyclocross. Each will use a different type of MTB and will yield different suggestions from the crowd.

Make it a point to visit 3-4 bike shops. Tell the sales person your budget, your intentions with respect to riding style, and have them help show you what they have. Test ride them all without prejudice and make an objective choice.

just don't buy Trek...... Just kidding. Trek makes a good bike, so does Specialized, or Cannondale, or Kona, or Gary Fisher, the list goes on and on.

Things to consider along with the brand and components, is the feel of the shop where you spend your money. Do they answer your questions? Do you feel comfortable with them? What kind of after sale support is included? What is the warranty for the frame/fork?

Diamondback Overdrive vs Specialized Rockhopper?

smartask

I'm just getting into mountain biking. I'm kind of a bigger guy and I really like the 29 inch wheels. Which of these two bikes would you guys recommended?

Also, is there a bike from Giant in the $700 range that would be a good hardtail?

Thanks a lot.

Answer
Check out MTBR for tons of reviews on mountain bikes. Both bikes you are looking at have good reviews. Personally I would lean towards the Specialized, because diamondback is a wal-mart/ target brand in my mind. If you are going to spend good money on a new bike don't get the same brand the little kid down the street has... I know it doesn't really matter.

Remember all components will wear out so get the best frame you can and go from there. Also just ride them and see which one feels best to ya. Entry level bikes have terrible wheelsets, especially for big guys the bike will feel like it wanders a lot esp a taller 29" wheel. So keep an eye out for a stiffer wheel set and it will make your bike feel 10 times better.

1. "The Antarctic is the vast source of cold on our planet, just as the sun is the source of our heat, and it exerts tremendous control on our climate," [Jacques] Cousteau told the camera. "The cold ocean water around Antarctica flows north to mix with warmer water from the tropics, and its upwellings help to cool both the surface water and our atmosphere. Yet the fragility of this regulating system is now threatened by human activity." From "Captain Cousteau," Audubon (May 1990):17.

2. Of the more than 1000 bicycling deaths each year, three-fourths are caused by head injuries. Half of those killed are school-age children. One study concluded that wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. In an accident, a bike helmet absorbes the shock and cushions the head. From "Bike Helmets: Unused Lifesavers," Consumer Reports (May 1990): 384.

3. While the Sears tower is arguably the greatest achievement in skyscraper engineering so far, it's unlikely that architects and engineers have abandoned the quest for the world's tallest building. The question is : Just how high can a building go? Structural engineer William LeMessurier has designed a skyscraper nearly one-half mile high, twice as tall as the Sears Tower. And architect Robert Sobel claims that existing technology could produce a 500-story building. From Ron Bachman, "Reaching for the Sky." Dial(May 1990): 15.

Answer
1. The Antarctic is very cold on our planet. The sun has a lot of control with our climate. The water around Antarctica goes north and mixes with warmer water, and it helps cool our surface water and atmosphere. This system is fragile.

2. Three-fourths of bicycle deaths are caused by head injuries. Half were school kids. Wearing a helmet can reduce injury to the head. A helmet cushions the head in an accident.

3. The Sears tower is possibly the best achievement in skyscraper engineering. A structural engineer has made a skyscraper about one and a half mile tall. That's twice as tall as the sears tower.

i want to get a seat i can put behide my bike. not the seat but the ride along. i looked at them and they say they have to be 1 years old and at least 50 pounds more for the seats that go on the bike. i talked to my neighbor that is a doctor he said that he should be fine that they are guild lines. i was just wondering if any one has used one and liked it. and if your baby was youngher then a year mine is nine months and can sit up with out help he can also get down too. i dont plan to go on long rides yet. i will when he gets use to it. oh and my bike does have front and back shocks. so i cant use the seats just the one that rides behide. thanks for your help just a mom trying to work out with baby.

According to Consumer Reports:
"Don't buy a bicycle trailer or a bicycle-mounted seat until your baby is at least 1 year old. We don't recommend bicycle trailers and bicycle-mounted seats for children younger than that because they may not be physically equipped to withstand the forces they'll be exposed to when riding in a bicycle seat or trailer. And when they're younger than age 1, they can't support their head properly with a helmet on, which all riders should wear."

"Nobody we have met in the injury prevention field recommends taking an infant of less than 12 months in a bicycle child seat, trailer, sidecar or any other carrier. Nobody. And we do not either.
New York state law prohibits it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks it is dangerous to take a child under one year on a bicycle, and here is their rationale:..."

What are the typical costs for manufacturing quality kids bikes in Asia?

best price kids bikes on 49cc Quad bike, offroad scrambler, Quad bike, 4 wheeler, kids 50cc ...
best price kids bikes image

Richard T

I am looking at the typical costs (fixed and variable) for producing a batch of 1,000 aluminium kids' bikes (24 inch) in Asia using a unique frame design

Answer
You mean a 24" wheel? Are you expecting to offer various frame sizes or colors? What safety spec do they have to adhere to... JIS, EN, CPSC? Do you have the facilities to test them? If not, are you just going with a standard frame design?

When a bike is specced for production it takes a lot of time- there are 75 different parts that all have to be chosen, then of course you have the frame.

I have personally specced 24" wheeled bikes that would retail anywhere from $100 to about $700. This would mean the factory price would be between $36 to $290 plus shipping, duty, and inland carriage.

Most factories won't even talk to you for under 15,000 bikes... if you want me to offer more detail you may email me.

What size storage shed should I buy?

Lynn

I rent a home with no basement or garage. I decided that I should invest in a storage shed. I need to store 3 kids bike, lawnmower and some medium size containers (about 6, approx. 5x5), and some gardening tools. What is the smallest size that would work?

Answer
If it is okay with your landlord, and considering that you can take the shed with you when you move, I'd go for the largest that you can get -- if you have the space for it.

The cost is not much higher for the larger ones. Check prices, and determine the largest shed you can get for the least amount of money per square foot.

Please know, your city/county may have ordinances regarding shed size.

Where I live, you can have a 10/10 foot shed with no variance required. Larger than that, your're supposed to apply for a variance...but no one does!

Go larger rather than smaller. Stuff expands to fill the space!

Does anyone know how suitable minature horses are as pets for small children?

bella

We are thinking of getting a mini for our 5 yr old , we live on a farm and have horses/ bunnies etc but I dont know much about minatures and have heard some nasty stories about kids with sheltlands anyone out there know more?

Answer
I'm going to get up on my soap box to answer this.
1st. Most Minature horses are Shetland ponies!!!!!
2nd. Any horse or animal is only as good as it's training.
I'm trying to be polite but this is something that just makes me angry.
Minis have two registries. One is ran by the Shetland pony club and is the older of the registries. They have two sections, A and B, with the B being the taller and ponies this size are not allowed in the other registry. This other registry was started mostly because of the poor press that Shetlands have gotten and they wanted to distance themselves from them. Hench the "They're not ponies, they're miniature horses" line. Most smaller ponies are registered with both registries and many are also reg. with the Shetland pony club.
The really small ones really aren't meant for riding and can't carry much more than 30 pounds. They are nice for driving though a larger pony is able to pull more and go farther.
Finding a well broke pony isn't easy. Usually the really good ones are never offered to the general public. They tend to stay in a family being used as a driving pony between generations or being sold or leased to family friends. But they are out there and they are usually expensive.
As to nasty stories about kids and shetlands; what kind of stories would you hear about kids being turned out to ride and handle unbroke quarter horses? Just because they are small doesn't mean they aren't still horses and have to be trained as horses and the children have to be taught to handle them.
I've been around ponies since I got my first unbroke Shetland pony in 1960. I was 6. My daddy broke her to drive and then I rode while he drove. We went out every single day for at least 15 minutes and sometimes my poor daddy walked for a couple of hours. After about 4 months or so of this I was allowed to ride by myself in the arena and then the next spring I went out on the roads with my daddy on the bike. By the middle of the summer I was riding with some friends whose ponies had been taught to drive by my daddy and then they had followed the same routine we had.
So, while some minis have some Falabella blood in them most are nothing more than extra small Shetlands.

What age should my child learn how to tie his shoes and ride a bike without training wheels?

Kelly

I want answers from parents who have multiple children and know the correct answer to this question, PLEASE! no teenage kids that think they know how to give advice :o)
Please list the ages that your children were when they learned these things .. i am trying to figure out if my son is progressing as he should be .. he does have hyperactivity disorder and is on medicine.
Thanks :)
He turned 5 this month & isnt in kindergarten yet .. should i let loose and not worry so much?!

Answer
6 on the bike at least half of kids are riding a two wheeler without training wheels @ the start of 1st grade. The bike range though is the same as beginning reading 4-8 is the typical acquisition of these things. The bike is also how much access a child has to it. Because this generation of kids don't play freely outside unsupervised like we did, its growing later.

Tying laces, its expected by 2nd grade, most kids can do it earlier if they are taught. The velcro invention has really thrown the present generation of kids back on the shoe tying.

I'm 38, rode a bike @ 4 1/2, tied shoes @ 5 1/2

My children have complex developmental delays
they are 10 yrs today bike riding he doesn't do (dyspraxic), but read @ 6, tying shoes he can do sloppily and has been able to do since 7.

My 5 yr old has been reading since 3, can't ride a bike or tie shoes. Haven't begun either with him. He loves to peddle a trike though.

My 4 yr old does none of these he still has trouble dressing himself. He really doesn't even peddle a trike.

just look @ bikes in the toy stores. It used to be that a 12" bike came with training wheels, now 16" and even 20" come with them.

What is the best family campground in Sequoia National Park?

V.Ortiz

There are so many campgrounds, here is what I am looking for since we will be traveling with little kids: Not too far off the road, not too hot in the middle of summer, easy hiking trails, maybe some swimming (rivers or lakes???), ranger led programs for kids, biking, fishing, other fun activities???

Answer
OI! Best to go to Lake Isabella and get the maps from the grocery store on the south side of the lake. You won't find the most recent one's online at the Sequoia Park website.

I usually stay out of the Park because it costs $$ if you want a nice campground in Sequioa Forest w/trails try Miracle Springs/Hobo Campgrounds. The campgrounds are right along the Kern River and are very affordable.

What are good mountain bike trails that are family friendly?

harkins

Or maybe nice scenic beach paths that are nice in so cal?

Answer
Since I have no idea where you're asking from, I'll just give you the best trails in the world:

Japan: Ura Bandai District, cycling around the lakes is fantastic.
Germany: The trails around the Black Forest, and sometimes the city routes of Hannover are nice.
Austria: the woodlands around Salzburg are beautiful.
USA: I've biked in Yosemite, Grand Canyon and a little in the Quays down south... sweet!
U.K: The Lake District looks awesome in the summer and East Anglia has some nice variation for kids and adults too.
France: Go to the Auvergne. Believe me, you won't regret the journey there.
China: If you've got the guts for it, take a trip along the Yangtze.
Australia: never been there myself, but a good friend said the northern territories are worth a look in.
India: Might not be mountain bike terrain, but the sights are worth a cycle ride in Amritsar.

Hope that helped

How do I install training wheels around a rear derailleur on a 20" bike?

StanleyLiv

Just purchased Wald training wheels for kids bike (16" to 26"). The right side has a gear derailleur on it, which extends further than the axle. I can't put the training wheel bar on the axle since I don't have clearance.

Can this axle be extended out farther somehow?

Answer
There are better ways to learn how to ride a bike. Remove the pedals and lower the saddle so they can flat foot on the ground and push them self around and learn to steer. Then try coasting down a small slop with the feet down and then lifting the feet. Next replace the pedals and gradually raise the saddle.

Is a kids bike chain spaced differently?

ilikesta

I bought a standard chain at the store for my friends kids barbie bike. It seems to fit fine on the rear sprocket but the fron sprocket won't accept the spacing of the chain. Is there a different spacing for chains?

Answer
Yes, there are different chains available. There are generally speaking 2 pitches:
3/32 for dérailleur equipped bikes
1/8 for single speed and internal geared bikes like old 3 speeds
So unfortunately, there is no single common chain with bikes. Check out the links below for more.

Mr Skeng

I'm a London boy visiting the states for the fist time. What shall I do when I'm in San Diego?

Answer
Welcome to San Diego.
It's one of the nicest cities in the country. It's a major tourist destination and they know how to treat visitors right.

Mission and Pacific Beach are your best bet for fun in the sun. Belmont Park has a vintage wooden roller coaster (one of two remaining seaside coasters on the west coast) as well as other rides. There is a boardwalk that runs the entire 3 mile length of both beaches. It's a great place to rent a bike or skates.

Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo.

My favorite museum in the park is the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. It has some of the largest model layouts in the world. It is really awesome and a real hidden gem. Kids get in free.

North County San Diego is home to the Zoo's Wild Animal Park. There are multi acre enclosures where herds of wild animals roam plus lots of hiking trails.

La Jolla offers great views, great surfing, great food, and great shopping.
Check out the surfers at historic Windansea Beach. At low tide you can walk out onto the tide pools. Walk along the Cove and check out the caves. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Take a stroll on Prospect St and check out the shops, galleries, and have some authentic Mexican food at Alfonso's. Then head to the Birch Aquarium at The Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Planning a free day around London?

gjgfojgog

I want to take my boyfriend around London, he hasn't really been before. All i have planned is to walk down southbank, walk until we get to trafalgar square and then i don't know what to do after that would interest him. he's not really a cultural person more of a uninterested in anything person.

Answer
If he's not really interested in much, maybe it's time to try to find something that excites him...?

Have you thought about:
- being a kid again and rolling down the hills in Richmond or Greenwich Park? Flying a kite?
- walking around the markets? (Camden; Greenwich; Borough; Pentoville Road; Roman Road; Covent Garden)
- journeying over to a number of the museums and galleries? (Natural History; Science; National Portrait Gallery)
- getting a read in the British Library
- hiring a bike (reasonable cheap) and cycling around the side streets to see the independent shops and stuff that don't normally get seen by tourists?
- looking at the grafitti tunnel by Waterloo station?
- taking part in a Japanese karaoke bar?

What bicycles are good for general riding and commuting?

best kids bmx bikes on Dynacraft 20 inch Tony Hawk Boys Bike - Crenshaw | ToysRUs
best kids bmx bikes image

scuderia_f

All I have now is an old BMX bike I had since a kid. I think it is a standard-sized BMX bike, but I'm not sure if I would want to ride it because of its small size and the fact that it was probably designed for children.

What type of full-sized bikes are good for general riding and commuting? What brands are reputable?

Answer
There is a bewildering array of choices today. Let the professionals help you. Go to a bike shop and tell them where and how you want to ride as well as how much you have to spend. Let them match you up with the bike that best meets your needs. Then, and most important, test ride the bike. Go to other shops and see what they have to offer, making apples to apples comparisons. The business is very competitive. Let that work for you. If you try several bikes, one will just fit and feel better than the others. You'll be able to tell that very quickly after sitting on it and test riding for just a few minutes. Buy that bike, regardless of the name on it. Name brands mean very little today because almost all bikes are made in just a few factories in Asia. The bike that fits and feels best is the one you will enjoy and use the most.

does anyone know any cheap but good good quality bmx bikes?

jamil w

My mom refuses to buy me a good quality bmx bike because i usually break them because they are not good quality. Shes not cheap because she just bought me an ipod touch. does anyone know where can i get a job at 15?

Answer
First off:

Your mom is just like every other good mom on the face of this planet. She doesn't want to let you get involved in something dangerous or expensive in hospital bills. She may also be concerned that you will become one of those dead beat hippy bmxers that wont be able to take care of her when she gets old. Either way she doesn't realize that limiting your physical activities to jockish teem sports increases her chances of raising a complete dutche bag.

So
Second of all:

Tell your mom you don't want an Ipod, and beg for the bmx bike. To sway the argument hit her with bargans from the internet like these:

All of which will beat ther F out of buying a brand new bike from a bike shop or dans

but if shes to prissy for a deal just go for dans and make sure you get a complete where the frame is 100% 4130 chromo.

Lastly:

thousands of immigrant kids died back in the late 18 to early 1900s so you wouldn't have to. so enjoy school, and take it seriously. but if you need some spare bux start asking for cash for holidays and birth days. You can also start working extra hard around the house to guilt trip the parents into doling out a bigger allowance.

so stay committed to the cause and see if your friends can help you get into bmx if they can.

What is a good age for kids to start riding their bike?

What age do u think a child should be taught to ride a bike with training wheels? without training wheels?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to ride their bike into town with an adult or an older kid like a teenager maybe?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to be able to ride a bike downtown themselves?

any other thoughts about kids riding bikes?

Answer
it varies and depends how motivated the child is. my kids started riding w/ training wheels at 3 and w/o between 4 and 6 (some of my kids were more cautious and others were more motivated). they biked into town (maybe 4 miles for us) with an adult from about 5 or 6. as for by themselves, they haven't yet. my oldest is 10 and she sometimes bikes short distances around the neighborhood with a friend.

other thoughts: helmets are not optional. (speaking as someone who got a concussion riding my bike!)

My 9yr old is terrified to learn to ride a bike.He is small-50lb,50in,what bike/training wheels should I get?

unimpresse

I would like to find a bike maybe a cruising type, low to the ground or something. He is afraid of heights. I've tried to teach him with other bikes but the training wheels are so flippin small and offer him no assurance. I wish they made a older kids cool trike not a green machine or anything but a bike with 2 bigger studier training wheels. Please let me know if you have any information or suggestions. Thank you so much!

Answer
He needs your assurance that he can ride a 2 wheeler - not the training wheels.

A 20 inch bike is what you want. (or 16 inch if 20 is too big)
But most 20 inche bikes will have a problem as follows :
For the perfect seat height for pedaling it (the seat) won't be perfect for flat foot learning. And in "older cautious" kids they really need that flat foot on the ground to feel good about doing it.

Here' a 20 " townie that fixes that problem - I am sure there are others out there but generally that's what you want - the seat set up for correct pedal distance and flat foot on ground too. It's a little pricey - but I am sure there are other brands liek this. Ask at bike shops for - flat foot designed bike like a townie.

Whatever you buy for him have him go with you to sit on the bike. My son has 3 bikes because some were too big at first -he is small too.
I would say don't bother with training wheels they are just a crutch. Instead get him Razor scooter (19 at target ) before you get the bike. It uses similar balance technique as bike riding -steering for the balance etc...But it's a little less scary - one foot on scooter and one on ground....with no bike between your legs.

And when he can ride the scooter - and balance riding it for more than 15 feet or so - then put him on the bike.
But take off the pedals of the bike first - and no training wheels. Have him sit on the bike and push with both feet and steer and balance and use his feet to push hisself . Have him use his feet to stop and balance as needed - tell him to think of it as a scooter with a seat.
When he can do this well both slow and fast (slow is more important it teaches balance) - then put the pedals back on and have him try to ride it - while you hold on to him and let go.

Tell him he can do it and mean it. Because he really can.
If he gets scarred ...go back to the scooter....he may need a gentle push (emotionally) once in a while.
Our son decided he never wanted to ride a bike again when we took off training wheels. All the other kids on the street were riding 2 wheel bikes while he rode a big wheel and didn't care. Until we gave him an emotional push ...with some fussing (an emotional pushes) he did it over about 4 days time.

For you it might take a week or 2 (or more) - that's OK. Don't give up and encorage him to never give up, there will always be tomorrow. But training wheels tell him it's OK to give up.

Riding a bike is like life in many ways - teaches self reliance, freedom, confidence and that sometimes you just fall down. But you have to never give up and get back up and try again. It's not easy - And it can also teach hard work - your kid's worth it.

I can't really remember riding a bike with training wheels but boy do I remember the first few times I rode a 2 wheeler by myself...I felt BIG and I could do it and it's a great self asteem builder.
He needs you not training wheels.
And when he does it - celebrate his achievement.

What to use for a 14wk baby and 2 yr old in a bike trailer? Helmets too big and car seat won't fit!?

Aimee

I have a bike trailer for my two babies but I don't know how is best to keep my 14week old safest. A helmet won't fit until at least 18 months and her car seat won't fit in with my 2 year old as well :0( Don't want to be stuck in a stuffy, hot car all summer so would really like to keep fit and take them out on the bike! Help!! Thanks in advance :0)

Answer
The infant in the car seat cannot ride with the toddler -- so just get a bicycle child seat http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Classic-Bicycle-Child-Carrier/dp/B000ISXSSA for the toddler -- kid will be much happier being up there behind you and watching around the road. Also should be available at Target, locally.

How can you legally travel on a 50cc scooter with a toddler?

jeff_rulz_

It is legal in Missouri to drive without a license or helmet on a 50cc scooter and I would like to purchase one to cruise around town. However, I am concerned about how much I would use it. I would use it more frequently if I could legally carry my 3 year old with me. Just curious if it's legal and what I should get to protect him (other than a bicycle helmet).

Thanks!

Answer
A bicycle helmet will do NO good.
3 years simply isn't big enough.

I'm all for kids riding, my son sat behind me at 6. There are minimum requirements, even if not written into law (they are law elsewhere): Dedicated seat for passenger, dedicated footrest for passenger (which they must be able to use), handhold(s) for passenger. Helmet - and a styrofoam cooler is for beer, not pavement.
The passenger must be large enough (and understand enough) to be able to hold on. The helmet must fit properly - good luck finding a hat for the little melon.

I added an extra set of pegs for Jr. The law said he must reach, did not specify must be in original location.

Its vintage looking with the curved handle bars. Its from about the 80's and its an olive green and cream color. The cleaned the crome and removed all the rust. Also the tubes, tires (it does not have white wall tires), bake cables, and bike chain are brand new. My parents bought me a candy apple red vintage cruiser with white wall tires for my birthday, so I was thinking of selling my old one.

Thanks!
I sold it for $150 b*tches! haha

$10.Or give it to a poor kid who has none.

How to get spray paint off a bicycle?

Joshua

My two nieces birthday. Was a while back (their birthday is like a week apart so we celebrate it on the day) and they both got brand new bikes. Well they got stolen recently and the kids who live down the street form them suddenly has bike that look like theirs, but spray painted, so i took them.

They're both at my apartment. Now it could just be a coincidence. There's only one way to find out i need to get the spray paint off.

Don't worry if the bikes aren't pink under the paint i'll put them back. But they have the exact same pegs as my nieces bikes. So if they are my nieces bikes i'll clean them off and give them back to my nieces. If tried soap and water and it didn't work.

What can i buy to get the spray paint off?

Answer
You must let the police recover the bikes or you could be committing a crime. If those are not the right bikes what will you do then? Spray paint them? You can use mineral spirits to remove the paint without damaging the original.

Help finding a bike (In UK)?

James

Hey, can anyone recommend a good commuter bike to me? I'm quite fussy and finding it difficult to find a bike I like.

I'm looking for a bike with hub gears (at least an 8 speed), aluminium frame, disc brakes and possibly front suspension, though not necessity! if anyone can recommend one, or point me in the direction of a good site other than evans, it'd be a huge help! thanks in advance!

Answer
Hey mate,

Glad you're looking at hub gears for commuting - I'm a firm believer in the right machine for the job and have long questioned why you see so many commuters struggling through 27 gears designed for mountain cycling whilst weaving their way around a bus on the high street - plus changing gear while you are stationary in traffic can be a real leg saver!

Similarly I think aluminium or carbon fibre are a good thing if you can afford them, once you've had a lightweight frame, you really don't go back - I agree with the earlier comment - you don't need a road bike - these are racing bikes and have a very poor riding position after a long day at work, and the larger wheels just have more expensive tubes and tyres, as well as much larger turning circles. If you did find a mountain bike you like, you can of course just change the tyres for road ones, but I really would recommend the hub gears over derailers - less maintenance, longer life, more reliable etc.

As for discs and forks, these may be overkill for everyday commuting, but again this depends on where you're riding - you won't need hydraulic discs, but again the reliability, strength and long life of discs over especially cheap callipers may make them a worthwhile upgrade but if you're just going to be riding on predominantly flat ground in heavy traffic, you really will be fine with a good set of v-brakes or quality calipers. As for the front suspension, just think how often you're route goes around pot holed streets, shortcuts off road, or up on the pavement for those lethal junctions, and decide if you need it.

Finally the most important part - price! Please do not spend more than £500 on a commuter bike - this is a high-wear, high-risk bike. Get a work horse - absolutely nothing fashionable - high theft targets. If you want a quality performance bike, then you need two - one cheap sturdy commuter workhorse and one expensive road/mountain/downhill/bmx bike to suit your needs. Don't forget you are very likely to damage the bike in an accident during everyday commuting over the life of the bike, and that it must 'live' somewhere whilst you are at work and that bikes are very high targets for theft and vandalism - no lock is safe - use a cable/chain lock AND a D-lock (as these take different tools to open) and always remove any quick-release kit when you lock it up. (disc brakes and suspension forks say "expensive" to theives - maybe worth considering?).

I won't recommend a website because I think it's really important to go into you're local bike store and find a bike that really meets you're needs - the most important thing of all is that the frame fits you - this will make it much more comfortable, and efficient! Stick to you're guns about hub gearing though, it sounds as though you really don't need deraillers and they will offer you deraillers in the store - remember the staff are just going to try and sell you kit you don't need - they are just kids that ride bikes at the weekend, they probably know a lot about performance bikes, but very little about day to day commuting!

you sound like you know what you want so try and avoid the sales team and have a good look yourself. You may have to go to several shops, but as you will be using this bike day in day out, rain, snow ice wind and heat you want to get it right. obviously once you find the model you want, check you can't find it cheaper online (take into account some stores include a years maintenance in the price!

Hope that helps!

What influenced the Wright brothers into building the airplane?

best kids glider bikes image

DT

Answer
The Wright Brothers much like modern day skater punks. Kids. They were swept up in the bycycling craze of the 1880s and 90s, Wilbur in particular loved whipping along country roads on his bike, flying along.
Flying has been on people's minds since they first got cr^pped on by birds overhead. Towards the goal of flight people have been experimenting with wings & balloons & kites since ancient times but for the sake of santity we shall concentrate on the hundred years from that December day in 1903 when they became truly airborn.
First balloons and then gliders were launched into the sky and as children Orville and Wilbur ready avidly about gliding clubs and baloonist. Headstrong & idealistic they had little interest in balloons but gliders fascinated them. In their teens they took their love of bycyling to the next level by becming bike manufacturers & dealers. Their business was succesful enough to pursue their interest in flight. Their passion for flight fueled by bycylcing trips that feeling of near flight when one is on a bike.
In fact the earliest impulse having achieved flight was to apply the lessons for steering a bike to the steering of an aircraft but that is a topic unto itself.

What can Indiana Tourists in Sacramento do? May 23th to June 7th?

Sharon Coh

Need ideas for my houseguests to do in the coming weeks. They are both young women, nearly 30, and I'm (quite) a bit older and working everyday. They'll be on their own most days.

I need to offer suggestions for low cost adventures within half a day's travel. They have a car, camping equipment and very little money! They have equipment for fishing and camping. I don't even know what fish are in season or where they could catch them! Boat rentals, kayaking, etc. would be great if I only knew where to send them. They are from Indiana so the natural sights, sounds and creatures of California are very entertaining if I only knew where they'll find the greatest fun.

Your ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
I always recommend auburn areas to visitors that are into nature, exploring, camping and stuff!
If you take hwy 80 east exit in the town of auburn and continue on 49 and let it wind around and down to the bridge go right on the bridge that will send you into the heart of the gold mining/ rush areas and beautiful areas to hike in!
Also some of the all time best hiking and mountain biking is a few exits past the auburn exit and it is called "foresthill" (you can also connect to it by going straight instead of right at the bridge) if you get off the freeway and make a right you will cross one of the biggest bridges in Calif. or is it in the U.S? I forget anyways thats a sight they have to see! (they also filmed a scene from that vindiesel movie there xxx??) anyways one of my favorite spots Ive been going to since I was a kid is at the end of the bridge there is a mountain top there if you park at the basin of that (back side) and hike up you may loose a breath at some of the views and the eagles and hawks sowring. ( we flied out gliders there as a kid) anyways should they venture up Foresthill a ways there are tones of comping spots mosquito ridge, devils hole (i like the views and peace here) , lower and upper meadows and a couple of other ones in the area that may be better but I cant give away all the goods! lol good luck! tell em its all about exploring up there just like they did a hundred years ago! you can never go wrong in those parts!
dang now i wanna go! lol need a tour guide? let me know!haha
also don't forget the central coast and northern coast too if they can make it, SO BEAUTIFUL! I know these don't sound like day drives but they can be! when my wife and I need to get away and have no time to do so........... we do it in a day! :) we did Ukia to Mendocino coast and down the coast (1) last weekend got home late but it was worth it! :) enjoy, have fun, be safe! email for more details, no worries!
