What is the difference between fixed gear and single speed road bikes?

.

The only thing I know is that you can coast on single speed, and you pedal continuously on a fixie. I haven't ridden a bike (I live in the suburbs so I mostly drive) since middle school. Only rode a road bike a couple times.

Here are a few questions:

What is the difference, feel-wise, of riding them? For example, does one go faster, or smoother than the other?

I hear fixies are dangerous but only because a lot of people who have fixies ride brakeless. Can I install brakes on fixed gear? And if so, what brakes would be best? I rode a bike as a child but it was not really a road bike, just a generic kid's bike, and I am used to pushing down on the pedals to brake.

Which bike would be better for riding in the city of Chicago? I've rode in traffic with my friends but had borrowed someone's mountain bike because I don't own one, and that was a workout trying to keep up.

Which one would be easier to maintain? I'm a beginner so my boyfriend could help me with maintenance, but I don't want to spend too much to keep maintaining my bike.

Thank you so much! All the help is much appreciated. I'm moving to Chicago in the fall and would like to start riding. Thanks!
Oh, and can I always change the gears? Like could I start off with a single speed and then once I'm used to that, if I ever want to try fixed gear, could I change the whole thing into that? As I said, I'm a beginner so I have to learn everything about bikes and I don't really know much lol.

I am looking to get a bike to give me a cardio alternative to walking or running. I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid, so I am trying to figure out what kind of bike to get -- mountain bike, road bike etc. How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?

Answer
Start by reading "Bicycles: How to Choose"
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

It's all based on "where & how" you will be riding. Road bikes will be your fastest choice but for the streets & smooth roads ONLY. Mountain bikes or all-terrain bikes basically suck on the streets because of the knobby off road tires & suspension parts zapping your energy. Knobby tires slow you down. And with every turn of the pedals, part of your energy is absorbed or soaked up by suspension parts. All-terrain bikes are OK on the streets ONLY if they have a smoother "street friendly" tread design & "lock-out" front forks. This (in essence) turns the suspension fork into a rigid fork with the simple twist of a switch.

Hybrids are a good "all around" type bike. They are great at nothing - but still good at many things. They can be ridden on the streets or light (man-made) groomed off-road trails of finely crushed stone.

"How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?" Nine very, very simple words... See your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local BICYCLE shop! Not K-Mart, Wally World or Target. At a REAL bicycle shop you can TRY B4 you BUY! You can test ride as many bikes as your little heart desires before the sale!

Other advantages are...
1) Professional sales - not some minimum wage "associate".
2) Professional assembly of the bike by a certified mechanic - again, not some minimum wage associate.
3) FREE service after the sale. ALL new bikes require a tune-up as shift & brake cables stretch a bit during the break-in process. Some shops do this only once. Some for a year. A bike shop near me does this for LIFE!
http://bigshark.com/about/policies-and-shipping-pg11.htm
4) Vastly better quality. Wally World lists bicycles on their website in the TOY Dept.! Does that give you a clue? A quality bike from a REAL bicycle shop - taken care of properly - can last a lifetime. Those from discount stores are "disposable bikes", meant to be ridden a year or so - then into a dumpster.

See link below. This is my "pride & joy" - a 2011 Raleigh Sojourn touring road bike. Time spent in the shop for repairs? ZERO. Money spent after the sale? A bottle of chain oil (about $8.00) and a set of new tires when the original ones wore out. And I replaced them with the SAME tires. Flat tires to date? ZERO - none - nada. Sure - you'll need to do routine maintenance & cleaning on any type of bike. But getting a quality bike from the start cost LESS in the long run.

What should I do in San Diego?

Mr Skeng

I'm a London boy visiting the states for the fist time. What shall I do when I'm in San Diego?

Answer
Welcome to San Diego.
It's one of the nicest cities in the country. It's a major tourist destination and they know how to treat visitors right.

Mission and Pacific Beach are your best bet for fun in the sun. Belmont Park has a vintage wooden roller coaster (one of two remaining seaside coasters on the west coast) as well as other rides. There is a boardwalk that runs the entire 3 mile length of both beaches. It's a great place to rent a bike or skates.

Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo.

My favorite museum in the park is the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. It has some of the largest model layouts in the world. It is really awesome and a real hidden gem. Kids get in free.

North County San Diego is home to the Zoo's Wild Animal Park. There are multi acre enclosures where herds of wild animals roam plus lots of hiking trails.

The Quail Botanical Gardens are in Encinitas

La Jolla offers great views, great surfing, great food, and great shopping.
Check out the surfers at historic Windansea Beach. At low tide you can walk out onto the tide pools. Walk along the Cove and check out the caves. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Take a stroll on Prospect St and check out the shops, galleries, and have some authentic Mexican food at Alfonso's. Then head to the Birch Aquarium at The Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It has a spectacular view of the bluffs over the Pacific Ocean.

Take the trolley from Downtown to Old Town. There is a state park there that recreates life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. There are also a lot of restaurants in the area. Pizza Bella has the best pizza in town as well as homemade Italian food.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse at the Cabrillo National Monument offers great views of the downtown skyline, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mexico.

Planning a free day around London?

gjgfojgog

I want to take my boyfriend around London, he hasn't really been before. All i have planned is to walk down southbank, walk until we get to trafalgar square and then i don't know what to do after that would interest him. he's not really a cultural person more of a uninterested in anything person.

Answer
If he's not really interested in much, maybe it's time to try to find something that excites him...?

Have you thought about:
- being a kid again and rolling down the hills in Richmond or Greenwich Park? Flying a kite?
- walking around the markets? (Camden; Greenwich; Borough; Pentoville Road; Roman Road; Covent Garden)
- journeying over to a number of the museums and galleries? (Natural History; Science; National Portrait Gallery)
- getting a read in the British Library
- hiring a bike (reasonable cheap) and cycling around the side streets to see the independent shops and stuff that don't normally get seen by tourists?
- looking at the grafitti tunnel by Waterloo station?
- taking part in a Japanese karaoke bar?

Have you ever defeated a stereotype before?

Major Tom

I have many times. I'm from Texas. When I lived elsewhere and served in the military, most people were shocked. I don't wear a cowboy hat or have a twangy accent. I speak proper English, and all my sentences are coherent because I'm educated. I hate country music, and I'm a staunch Democrat. Everyone thought I was from California because I'm liberal, and I love mountain-biking. Plus, I love heavy metal, and I'm environmentally conscious. Has anyone ever defeated a stereotype before? If so, how did you do it?

Answer
I am Ukrainian Very close to Russian you could say, there stereotype is that girls and guys, where leather coats, drop out, women become a house wife by 19 if not earlier. Also we all drive Honda's or BMW's, and hang out at Starbucks. well I don't do any of these things, I detest Honda's and BMW's, and don't ever drink coffee, don't even want to think about marriage until 24 even that is early here in America. I plan on getting a degree when the majority of Ukrainian and Russian Youth does not. Men drop out of high school and start construction and women do the same but do not work. I am different because I choose to be not because I am Americanized. I was born in Ukraine, and still am fluent, but i also am educated in English.

How do you make rock climbing a competition?

I was recently elected onto the executive board for my Jewish Youth Group. Part of being on board includes coming up with fun events to do as a group. So, I chose to promote a Rock Climbing night (at an indoor climbing facility, not outdoors). However, to get this idea to fly, I need to create a competition out of it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Need ideas for my houseguests to do in the coming weeks. They are both young women, nearly 30, and I'm (quite) a bit older and working everyday. They'll be on their own most days.

I need to offer suggestions for low cost adventures within half a day's travel. They have a car, camping equipment and very little money! They have equipment for fishing and camping. I don't even know what fish are in season or where they could catch them! Boat rentals, kayaking, etc. would be great if I only knew where to send them. They are from Indiana so the natural sights, sounds and creatures of California are very entertaining if I only knew where they'll find the greatest fun.

Your ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
I always recommend auburn areas to visitors that are into nature, exploring, camping and stuff!
If you take hwy 80 east exit in the town of auburn and continue on 49 and let it wind around and down to the bridge go right on the bridge that will send you into the heart of the gold mining/ rush areas and beautiful areas to hike in!
Also some of the all time best hiking and mountain biking is a few exits past the auburn exit and it is called "foresthill" (you can also connect to it by going straight instead of right at the bridge) if you get off the freeway and make a right you will cross one of the biggest bridges in Calif. or is it in the U.S? I forget anyways thats a sight they have to see! (they also filmed a scene from that vindiesel movie there xxx??) anyways one of my favorite spots Ive been going to since I was a kid is at the end of the bridge there is a mountain top there if you park at the basin of that (back side) and hike up you may loose a breath at some of the views and the eagles and hawks sowring. ( we flied out gliders there as a kid) anyways should they venture up Foresthill a ways there are tones of comping spots mosquito ridge, devils hole (i like the views and peace here) , lower and upper meadows and a couple of other ones in the area that may be better but I cant give away all the goods! lol good luck! tell em its all about exploring up there just like they did a hundred years ago! you can never go wrong in those parts!
dang now i wanna go! lol need a tour guide? let me know!haha
also don't forget the central coast and northern coast too if they can make it, SO BEAUTIFUL! I know these don't sound like day drives but they can be! when my wife and I need to get away and have no time to do so........... we do it in a day! :) we did Ukia to Mendocino coast and down the coast (1) last weekend got home late but it was worth it! :) enjoy, have fun, be safe! email for more details, no worries!

Did you buy your kid(s) a glider bike or balance bike?

Q. What age did you purchase it for him/her/them? What do you like about the bike you bought? =)

My son is 2 1/2 and tall. I know he would have no issue fitting on one but I'm wondering if he is ready for it.

Answer
I personally think those balance bikes are a waste of money. I always just got regular bikes with training wheels. You can set the training wheels loose so the bike wobbles back and forth allowing the child to learn to balance just the same. This way when the child is ready to peddle you just take the training wheels off and they have a two wheel bike. With the balance bike/glider then you have to go buy another bike. Also it's better for your child to learn to peddle while they learn to balance. They can learn to balance on a glider but once they get a peddle bike it's different to balance while peddling and so it's like learning all over again anyway.

Allison B

Looking for a decent beginners bike for my 4 year old son. Any advice on what kind to get him? I know nothing about the different brands of dirt bikes, and I don't want to end up with a piece of crap... Any advice would be appreciated!

Answer
Yes the Honda CRF 50 aka XR 50 is the most reliable bike out there. It will last for many years. The Yamaha PW 50 also works very well for smaller kids. Both have training wheel kits etc. just buy the newest bike you can afford. Do not by imported stuff from China. Make sure if buying used that to CRF 50 was not owned by a teen, many riders use the CRF 50 for a pit / play bike. My son has both of these bikes he loves his PW the best,it is a little smaller. The PW is a Two stroke oil injection, the CRF is a four stroke straight gas. The PW is one speed the CRF is a three speed. Both have automatic type clutches.

Does the Tae Bo Amped really work and is it good for beginners?

escheirman

I have been struggling to lose the "baby" weight for 3 years now and have been moderately successful lately-cutting out lunches with coworkers, limiting sodas and sweets, and eating much healthier. Everyone tells me to work out, but with my schedule, there is not time for a gym visit. I cannot run much because of a bad knee (car accident). I saw the Infomercial last night for Billy Blank's Tae Bo Amped and it seems like something I can do in the morning before showering or in the evening before bed. Is this a good start for a beginner? I really want to get healthy and lose the "muffin top" and "love handles" as well as upper thighs, tone the butt and get rid of the saggy upper arms. Thanks for your help

Answer
We do not have too much time as we remain too much busy with our daily routine activities like going to the office, spending most of day time there and then coming home back in the evening. In the morning we remain in hurry to reach the office, as we do not love to leave our bed on time in the morning. In the evening as well, we do not prefer to walk or exercise and mostly prefer to spend most of the remaining time in watching TV, eating delicious foods and talking to our family and friends. So we rarely are able to save some time for our health and losing the extra fat around our bodies.

But the truth is that we need to give some time and make some efforts if we really want to lose love handles.

* Avoid eating and sleeping late in the nights. Do not go to bed straight after taking your dinner. Healthy option will be to do some walking straight after the dinner.

* We love junk too much as that sounds really tasty to us especially in the weekends. Eating junk food will no way do any good our health and our body fat. So try to avoid junk food to some extent at least.

* Avoid processed, canned and refined foods and prepare fresh foods that include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

* If you are a beer or wine addict, it is not good news for you. The more beer or wine you drink, the more calories you are going to consume. Alcohol does not contain nutrients but contains fat only. It may not be possible for any of us to leave it fully, but we can have it on some big occasions.

* With these steps, you will also need to be regular with your exercises. You do not need to go to the gym for doing the exercises. The ultimate goal is increasing the activity level which you can increase by walking in the morning with your friends or dog, playing some outdoor games, playing with your kids, bike riding or doing some cleaning work at home.

Is childhood obesity and inactivity are issues of New Zealand society and why?, and what are the impacts on New Zealand soceity because of this?

Answer
It's not only in N.Z But also Australia and the US have the same problem.
Naturally the blame these days seem to be the Takeaway outfits such as MacDonald's, Not true. Kids today have become rather lazy, technology has taken over and computers have taken over Sports.
Parents need to get their act together and involve themselves with sporting activities.
Years ago kids would be out on there bikes - playing footy - Baseball etc. Parents would also be involve, picnics and camping was a big thing.
I have never seen so many children of today, committing criminal acts, sheer boredom

Danielle

My son is almost 2, and he knows how to swim with arm floats. He almost has swimming down in general. My husband and all his brothers, learned at one. I taught myself at like 10. When did our kids and you, learn to swim?

Answer
I started trying to teach my daughter when she was 8, a few months after she learned to ride her bike. But we had two insanely hot summers, so we didn't get very far.

This summer was milder, but a lot of family drama. We almost lost her dad multiple times due to complications of an injury. She finally officially became a swimmer at age 10, a few weeks before her 11th birthday. Next summer we will improve her skill level.

I personally learned how to swim when I was 21. I saw how much my daughter loved playing in the water and decided that while she plays splashing games with Daddy, I would go out shoulder-deep and teach myself to swim. I am still not really good enough to save anybody, but at least if there was an emergency, I can keep my head above water while someone else saves the non-swimmers.

How do I figure out what size my daughter's bike is?

arliesmom

She needs a bigger bike, but I have no clue what size her current bike is. Someone once told me it has something to do with the tires but I have no idea where to look, there are several numbers on her tire. I see no numbers anywhere on her bike.
The only numbers on the tire that I see besides how much to inflate them is a 56-4013. Does this mean it's 56 inches?? My daughter is 10 years old.

Answer
While frame size is used for adults, tire size is the method used for sizing children. Age indicates size needed but height is better.

My daughters are 9 and 11.5. My 9 year old has almost outgrown a 20" wheeled bike. And my 11.5 year old now rides a 24" mountain bike and has for 2 years. She is 56" tall now, a little short for her age.

The tire size is ALWAYS imprinted on the tire you just missed it. Try looking at the other side. It will say something like 20 x 1.75. 20 being the diameter of the tire and the 1.75 the width. Do not measure the wheel itself as it's not what is used. You also can simply measure the tire height with a yard stick. Standard tire sizes are 12, 16, 20, 24 and 26" for kids. I'd guess she currently has a 20" and needs a 24" now like my daughter

Since your daughter is in between my girls, I'm pretty sure you want to buy a 24" now. However if she is really tall, almost 5 feet tall, you may want a 26" bike.

My daughter is almost 7 and doesn't know how and is scared she will fall. I'm just trying to figure out if she is behind other kids.

Answer
It is just fine that kids are learning at 4 or 5, but 7 is not too old either. There are so many factors, most of which are exposure and opportunity, that come into play. The avid rider's kids may ride much more often than someone else's so that one kid has 40 hours on a bike by age 4 when it takes another child to age 7 to get 40 hours. My main point is not to be concerned with being behind; many kids learn up to age 9, with the average age being around 6.
If her fear is really preventing her from trying, suit her up with helmet, elbow and knee pads. Tap the pads while on her so that she can know what it feels like. Be silly about tapping the pads, like it hurt your finger or something.

how old is too old for training wheels?

Who am I?

Both my kids started riding 2 wheeled bikes at age 4. However there are more kids than I can name that are still in training wheels at ages 6 and even (gawd!) 7. Isn't there is a time where you have to spend the afternoon teaching the kid to not be afraid. Or go on a bike ride with him so he *wants* to do it?

Answer
5 is too old for training wheels!! but the older you are when you first learn to cycle the harder it is kind of like skipping

SKILLET!

I am 5'10 and weigh about 125 lbs., I have rode ATV's all my life and want to start riding dirt bikes. What would you recommend? I just want to trail ride and not race or anything right now. Also, what could I expect to pay? I definitely want to buy brand new, so give me an average price I would expect to pay. Try to keep the bike somewhat inexpensive. Please only answer if you have experience. Thanks!

Answer
You see you have two conflicting concepts here.. brand new and inexpensive. Those just don't connect for the most part. Then again, maybe you're a bit rich, but I'd think you would pay anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 for a brand new Jap bike (Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha). Really I'm still thinking you should buy slightly used off craigslist.... but hey, back to what you asked. Now I don't know what size ATV's you ride or even how old you are, but since you atleast have some experience, I'd recommend a 200-250cc four stroke to a small adult. However if you are a kid (13ish-16ish) I'd say more like a 150cc. Now running on my lack of information and truth of spirit (what.. I needed an "and") I'd recommend probably the least popular answer, a new Chinese motorcycle. Now before you do the standard "dismiss those junky pieces of shit" routine, some companies know what they're doing. Look into Zongshen, Lifan, and Qlink. Specifically Qlink as they are an interesting case. They take Chinese motorcycles and put them through American Quality Control (inspections) and then test every single bike. The Qlink XP200 is a dual sport, which I guess really isn't what you're looking for (I think) but it would allow you to ride in the dark, is the cheapest that I can find prices for online at $2,599 with a free 2-year warranty and you can find parts on their website. That engine is the same as a Suzuki dr200se motor(made on the same assembly line even), so you can also find parts for that engine and use those.

Hope I helped.

How do I convince my parents to let me get a motorcycle?

Blake

Background:
I am 19 and I have had my license since the day I turned 16, I have shown responsibility by having 5 different extremely nice cars and trucks, all of which would normally draw a lot of police attention (custom paint, tinted windows, and fast / bright colored cars). I bought every single car myself and paid in cash.
I never even got pulled over, and I have never been in an accident.
I am a full time engineering student and work 20 hours a week at a bank, I am a "good kid" and don't use any drugs or alcohol.
As you can see i am very responsible.

Question: How do I convince my parents to let me get a motorcycle?
I have been trying to convince them since 6 months after I turned 16. They say they trust me, but don't trust other drivers to not hit me or pull out in front of me. I live at home and they say that I cant have a bike until after I move out, not for my safety, but because my mom does not want to sit at home and worry about me making it home.
I have tried for a 250-350cc dual sport (dirt bike type) bike, as well as a small sport bike (Kawasaki Ninja 250). Neither of these are fast by any means (My car I am driving now has a top speed of over 160mph).

So how do I convince my mom that I wont get hit by a car?
I have already suggested: extra reflectors, neon green / reflective riding gear, extra bright lights, buying a bright colored bike, only being allowed to ride when its light out, call/text her when I leave and get places.

I am lost, please help as this is a passion of mine.
Thank You
I cant just "go get one", because I will be kicked out of the house, and cant afford to live on my own because I am going to school.
In my state its required to take a beginning motorcycle safety test in order to get your endorsement, and I would be wearing protective gear, and only be riding a 250cc bike.
David- It probably does not help that my dad used to ride street bikes and got cut off by a car and ended up in the hospital when he was about my age. I am trying to work on my mom because she is "the boss" lol

Answer
I teach motorcycle safety and I get asked this question, and other ones very similar to it, all the time. The answer is... there's no answer to it.

The thing about motorcycles is that they're dangerous. Are the worth the danger, well, to me they are. The most unfortunate thing about safety, when it comes to motorcycles, is that you're parents are correct. The overwhelming amount of two vehicle accidents are caused by the car, not the motorcycles. As safe as you try to be, as good as you get at riding, no matter what you wear or put on your bike, cars will still miss you. You don't win in an accident with a car.

Now, having said all that, I still love riding, enough that I help people learn. But I can't defend motorcycles as being safe.

Unfortunately, your parents have the facts on their side, and if they aren't the type that are willing to allow you to have a motorcycle, I doubt you'll be able to get them to concede. The only thing I can suggest is (depending on the state and the cost) try and take an MSF Beginner Course. If you do this, try and get one of your parents to take it with you. If they do it alongside you, that may change their mind. However, I doubt they'll do this, but it's about the best idea I can offer.

If this doesn't work, then you may just have to wait till you move out and can afford a place of your own. That's what I had to do. GL.

best kids bicycle trailer image

None of the dog specific ones are big enough, through researching on the net I think the burley cub would work - any ideas or experiences please? Would also like to be able to use it as a stroller and also maybe for kids in the future.

Answer
How heavy is your dog? Large breeds can weigh 200 lb

The weight limit for a Burley cub is 100lb (45kg)

http://www.bikesandtrailers.com/children/burley_cub.html#spec

If your dog is over 100 lb (45 kg)Try these guys their trailers are rated to 300 Lb (135 kg). A flat bed with a short fence should do the job.

http://www.bikesatwork.com/bike-trailers/

You will want to make sure your brakes are up to the task. A 2 into 1 lever running to brakes on both wheels of the trailer used instead of your normal rear brake should do the job.

http://www.trimuter.com/BL2-1-P13C4.aspx

Your dog will love riding it is even better than "the head out the window of the car". I've taken mine on a few charity rides. Everyone seems to get a bit of a kick out of it.

How do you make a bicycle trailer?

Meady

I am 14 and i wanted to know how to make a push-bike trailer, made out of wood, as it is close to hard rubbish time and i would like to collect some rubbish. If you know how to make it , please reply to this question!

Answer
The important parts of a trailer are the wheels and the hitch. The in between part is what makes it useful but you can tie things on with rope or attach a large plastic bin - like a rubbermaid style bin, or a clothes basket... but that can be done after.

Wood is a pretty heavy material and not strong in the ways you need for a bike. Using steel welded together from old bikes is best. Also you could use chopped up old bikes if you don't weld or have metal tools by using a simple plumbing tube cutter and hose clamps.

However, if you insist on using wood... you can be creative.

First you definitely need bike wheels. Try to find an old maybe even broken - children's bike. You need 2 wheels of the same size. Smaller wheels are stronger than bigger wheels so kids bikes are perfect. Also they are much cheaper and thrown away more often so you are more likely to find them.

Next you need something like a bike fork to mount the wheels in. This could be as simple as using the fork from the kids bike you got the wheel from - and then finding another matching fork from an identical kids bike. Finding matching scrap bikes is sometimes hard though. And it isn't wood. If you are using wood you basically have to make something similar to a fork but out of wood. You could use two beams of wood of the same size on either side of the wheel - then drill a hole for the axle in each size - you can drill both holes or even all 4 (for both wheels) all at the same time to make them match up. You will need either very strong wood or thick wood and it may take some figuring out to have it strong but thin enough for the axle to have the bolt fit on the other side.

Now for the decisions. How big a trailer do you want? I suggest basing your design around the container you are going to use. Do you have a large plastic bin of a certain size? Metal or wood would also do but would be heavier/stronger.

For instance, If you have a wooden bin or crate it might be strong enough to be integral to the bike trailer frame. Then you just attach the wheels with the forks to either side of the crate. Put the wheel in the middle of the crate so that your trailer will be balanced in the middle with the wheels carrying the weight. Have the crate be oriented with the opening at the top (of course) and the wheels in the middle of the longer sides so that the trailer is longer than it is wide. Place the Wheels such that the ground clearance underneath the trailer is about 6 inches. The lower you can put the mass to the ground the more stable and balances the trailer will be. However, you need about 6 inches of clearance to go over bumps in the road - etc.

If you are going to use a plastic (or other material) bin/crate/basket/bucket that is not strong enough to form the frame of the trailer you will have to make a frame for the bin to sit on top of or in. This could be a rectangle that supports the bin from the edges. Or it could support the bin from underneath with a U shape. It depends on the material you use. Mount the wheels in the centre on the long sides with about 6" of underneath clearance just as you would if the bin/crate were part of the frame.

Now you will have an almost finished trailer than should be balanced if you hold it. Now test it out and load something in it. Test to see if it is strong enough or you have to add more structure.

Next you make the arm which attaches the trailer to the hitch on your bike. Steel or wood this is pretty simple. Attach in to the middle on (what you decide is) the front of your trailer that you have so far. The easiest place to pull the trailer from is from the seat post. So you basically just need an arm that goes from the top/front of the bin support frame towards just lower than your seat. This should have a curve in it or even a right angle. You need to allow space for the wheel to pass underneath the bar. You need 6" clearance there also because as you ride a bike and turn or go over bumps that distance gets closer.

Finally you have to add the hitch. The hitch could be very complicated if you want it to be very convenient. But since you are using wood we will keep it simple. The easiest place to attach the trailer hitch to your bicycle is to your seat post. There are lots of options but it needs to wrap around the seat post. You could use old bicycle inner tube or bicycle tire to make a flexible linkage. Or you could drill a seat post sized hole in your thick wood. Keep in mind the trailer has to pivot in all directions ideally - up/down, side to side, and twisting. so you have to be creative.

You might also consider attaching the trailer hitch instead to a bike rear rack or "rat trap" style rear race rack. If you have one on your bike already. This will probably not be as strong as attaching to the seat post but it may be easier. If you do that make sure the pivot point that you attach to is exactly above the centre of the rear bicycle wheel because that will make it work b

how effective are fuel additives?

are you going to recommend using these products?

Answer
Fuel prices may have stabilized, but they are still over the top. And drivers are taking drastic measures to cut costs. Some have taken to riding a bike. Others are dumping a "top secret" pill into their gas tanks..............No kidding...............Drivers are resorting to pills, powders, liquid additives and mechanical devices to pump up their gas mileage. Among them, according to the Federal Trade Commission, are magnets attached to the fuel line that "realign" fuel molecules.
Usually accompanying these products are manufacturers' promises of an increase in fuel efficiency by as much as 20 to 30 percent. Some claim the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has tested and endorsed their product.................................⦠be fooled by the hype

.<<<<<<<<<<<<<
The FTC has issued a warning saying that additives do not significantly increase fuel efficiency. Some may even damage your car's engine or cause substantial increases in exhaust emissions.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Adding substances other than gasoline to your tank can void your factory warranty, according to consumer reporter Phil Reed of Edmunds.com.While the EPA does evaluate and test products, government agencies do not endorse any gas-saving products for cars. The best way to fight high gas prices, says the FTC, is to drive efficiently and stay within posted speed limits. Avoid sharp starts and stops. Go easy on the gas pedal and brakes. The FTC also recommends using cruise control, avoiding unnecessary idling and combining errands to cut down on the number of short trips.

Anyone own Vtech Vflash or Fisher Price Smart Cycle?

Mrolendo

I'm debating between a Vflash or Smart Cycle for my daughter's 4th birthday, but my son had a Vsmile and it was junk we had nothing but problems with it. bought a 2nd one thinking we just got a bad one, and it was junk too. I hear Vtech has improved their systems but I went to toysrus and they had the Vflash marked down from $80 to $50 on clearance and had no games for it, so I'm worried they may be getting discontinued and I won't be able to find games and accessories. I haven't been able to find reviews on either toy online. I'm also worried she may be too young for both of them but thought if she could have fun tinkering with them now she would grow in them. Anyone own either of these, and are you willing to give me feedback on how pleased you are with it?? THANKS!!

Answer
The VFlash is old and is definately discontinued, thats why you can't find any software for it - on top of that V Tech never had alot of software titles for the console in the first place. Also it's for an older age group so it maybe too complicated for your daughter.

The V Smile has been redone and the new model is called the V Smile Motion - its the same idea as the V Smile except the controllers are wireless and run on motion sensors (V Tech is obviously trying to capitalize on the popularity of Nintendo Wii's wireless concept) and can connect to the internet for more dowloadable content. It can use all of the previous software from V Smile as well. It doesn't sound like too much of a HUGE difference to make me want to rush out a buy it personally.

The Smart Cycle is alright but a few of the downsides include -

1. The size, it's about the size of a small childs bike so you need to have the space to hook it up.

2. Even after a year on the market there are still not alot of software titles available - all I ever see are the same 6 games everywhere I go.

3. You need to follow the assembly instructions to the T or you will screw the whole thing up and won't be able to use it (until you call Fisher Price to get a replacement part)

All of them are good for kids ages 3-8 you just have to purchase the appropriate software for your childs age and skill level.

Personally I've always found Leap Frog to be the best option with the kids for electronic learning devices. We've used almost everything from the reading systems (Leap Pad) to Hand Helds (Leapster, L Max).

Leap Frop products are easy to use and understand, there is always plenty of selection available when it comes to software which is a bonus when dealing with 3 children in different ages and skill circles and overall the kids enjoy them and use them a lot more.

The V Smile and V Pockets we have collecting dust in the basement vs. the Leapsters we have in the car are a testiment to that.

Good luck.

Its vintage looking with the curved handle bars. Its from about the 80's and its an olive green and cream color. The cleaned the crome and removed all the rust. Also the tubes, tires (it does not have white wall tires), bake cables, and bike chain are brand new. My parents bought me a candy apple red vintage cruiser with white wall tires for my birthday, so I was thinking of selling my old one.

Thanks!
I sold it for $150 b*tches! haha

I want a cheap bicycle to get around Buenos Aires. About how much could I expect to pay?

Wilson Man

I'll be living somewhere in the Belgrano/Palermo area. First of all, actually, if I were to get a bicycle, would that be a safe option for getting around or is street traffic too dangerous for cyclists? And second, how much would it cost to buy a cheap bike, not necessarily brand new. Would it be possible to get one for under $50 USD?

Answer
Forget the bike!

Probably will end up costing a lot, difficult for storage at your Palermo/Belgrano apartment!

Plus, as said here before, you will end up below a bus in NO time. And I am NOT kidding!

BUT, the plus is Buenos Aires and of course both in Palermo and Belgrano is that you have, several very in-expensive and (quite) reliable public means of transportation.

1* Sub-way (and I do not mean the sandwich!)
2* Buses
3* Taxis
4* Trains (even from Belgrano, that will take you down-town in a jiffy for less than a ARG1.00!!!)
5* Remises (private company taxis)

How do I become a racecar driver?

I'm 16 now and ever since I was a little kid, I've loved racing. I remember watching NASCAR races and dreaming about how amazing it would to be like Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart. I would always ask my parents but they didn't have a clue on how to get me started. Well I'm still dreaming and I really want a chance to race. Does anyone know how I can make it possible?

Answer
Yea do what grizzly boy says. He knows much more than anyone else about everything. He's a racer a street bike pro & a quad mechanic. He knows where every bolt & nut on every machine was made. He's so much cooler on-line. Btw... Don't have an opinion about anything at all because it's wrong. If cub bear boy doesn't agree then it can't be right.

How to build a wagon to pull with a quad?

Q. i need to build a wagon, have very limited resources, old lawnmower, i can take axels off of and tires, any ideas for a hitch as well?
i have 4 front lawnmower tires and axels

i want to BUILD it not BUY it

I desperatly need a hitch idea

Answer
The tires from a lawn mower will leave you with little clearance. The front tires from a coupe of BMX type kids bikes would work better. Just bolt the tires to the sides of your box about 1/3 of the distance from the back.

For the hitch a Pintle Hook type is the simplest to make with a basic hook and ring setup.

Add:
Find or bend two pieces of iron. One needs to look like a question mark that is almost a complete ring and having some way to connect to the quad with the opening facing up. An eye bolt with a cut in the eye about 45degs away from the bolt would work also. You then need a complete ring to attach to the cart in a horizontal position to drop in to the hook. Add a cut section of pipe to cover the opening in the hook so the trailer canât pop out when braking.

Q. i live in australia, melbourne, hampton park and i really love riding dirtbikes and i always wanted to build a go kart but i have no where to test it? so here me out , literally a 30 second walk from my house is a park now this park is basically a oval and in the middle of it is just a small swing and a slide and the rest is clear land, another 1 minute walk from that park is another park that is bigger but still has alot of land then 4 minutes walk from there is just a plain paddaock perfect i mean perfect for riding dirtbikes, and then we have the wetlands , its a massive land with mini hills and trees and its just huge it goes all the way through hampton park now this is my point ok. lately kids have been riding dirt bikes around the roads and stuff and risking there lives and other people and some people care some dont the cops how ever have been knocking people off there bikes with there cars now you can stop this all if the stupid council just take a little bit of that land in the wetlands and make it into a place people can ride dirtbikes i mean its perfect and also they have to pay alot to get the grass cut but if they let us riders go there and ride on the grass they wont worry about it, this is a win , win situation because if they charge like 5 bux per person they will make alot of money and if people get annoyed they should make it like 3 times a week , the coucil is getting money less kids will ride on the road, cops can stop putting people lifes in danger and every one is happy what do you think about this?

Answer
The cost to set it up, the cost for insurance (which would be near 10k a year) and th cost for having someone staffed to take the money, run it. - It is not worth it. They will make a loss. Councils do not have extra cash. Everything they do must make money.

What Suburb?

Sloane

My family and I want to move to Melbourne and we would like some info on what the best suburbs are?
We don't want to be right in the busy city, but we would like to be within 20 minutes of it. We would like to be within 20 minutes of the beach. We want to be really close to parks with bike trails, like the one that runs along the Yarra River.
I was thinking somewhere like Kew but I really have no idea what each of the suburbs are like. Any information would be great. Thanks.

Answer
Hi and great decision to move to the best city in the world ( I have lived in a few)

To help with your question, we sort of need a budget per week for housing, what sort of house, how many kids, ages etc??

Try www.realestate.com.au for rental properties, and to find them, look the suburbs up on www.whereis.com.au

To live in a suburb like Kew, you will be looking at around $300-$600 per week for a 3 - 4 bedroom house.

I am not comfortable putting the baby seat on the back but since they have the ones where my son can be in front of me, I was just wondering which type of bike works best. Thanks!

Answer
Not sure that I would use any seat where the child would be sitting on the bike itself. There are several good trailers that are on the market that I would feel much better about my kids in. I purchased a Burley brand trailer with no regrets. It is very stable and if I wreck my bike the trailer arm compensates so that the kids don't flip also. Not sure how old your son is but that would play a big part in what you buy also. Shop around and check the local bike shop too. They can be very helpful.

Is the GT Mach One Pro fitting for me?

Steve S

I'm a 5' 10" 20 year old who is interested in buying the GT Mach One Pro. The only problem I may see in buying this bike is that it's marketed as a "kids" bike and the top tube length of the bike is rather short at 19.5". I'm curious to know if any adults my height have had good experiences with this bike.

Answer
you need a longer top tube, i just purchased a red line flight pro 24 racer red and white. very nice... and the top tube is 21.7 and its for 5 ft 8 to what ever. you need at least 21.25 minimum. and if your bike is a 20 inch wheel i would def recomment that and more. Im 5ft 11 and a half inches and weigh 147. good luck Lee span

All I know is that it is a 50cc. It does not say what brand. I was told it is a 4 cycle because it has one exhaust coming from the motor?

Take it to a motorbike shop and get them to fix it as if you don't really even know what sort of bike it is, then you don't have much hope of fixing it.

Answer
do this.....click this link... http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/events/search Then search for the closest races....most likely they'll have a website with a phone number or email. Contact them and they'll send you in the right direction. The American Motorcyclist Association is in charge of all races that are actually "official" races. So search their site. http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/racing/getstarted
Also check out this section on their site about getting started.
Thy have a help phone # in case you still need further instruction.
If that doesn't work, drive to the nearest dirt bike dealer or call them and they will assist you.

Good luck with your racing!

Should her feet be able to touch the ground or only the pedals. If Her feet should touch the ground. Should it be just her tows or flat feet.
How high should the side wheels be? Should the bike be able to move from side to side, and how much?

Answer
sitting on seat and feet can go flat on ground=perfect height.

By "side wheels" do you men training wheels?
Assuming you do, they should be 4.5 to 5" across (high) and wobbling only a little bit so child gets feel for balancing--to learn how to balance.

(The "wobbling" will occur naturally. You needn't adjust "wobblocity")
Thus: "Training" wheels.
They'll put them on for you at bike shop.

Without training wheels around the age of 5. That is how old I was when my dad taught me. That is how old my son and my daughter both were when I taught them. They are grown with children of their own, now. I am raising my 3 young grandsons now, ages 12, 9 and 7 and all 3 of them have been trained on bicycles and I trained them around that age, also. We want to take our kids who have never camped somewhere family oriented. My husband and I both grew up tent camping.

Answer
We live in the Missouri Ozarks and have 5 children ages 9, 11, 12, and two 14 year olds. Our favorite place to take our family is Alley Springs campground on the Jacks Fork river. It is about 6 miles west of Eminence. It offers plenty of sites, some with electric, hot showers, flat level sites with paved roads for bike riding, and a good swimming hole. About 1/2 mile away is the Alley Springs Mill and spring with two hiking trails, one that goes around the spring area, and then a more difficult one that goes up to a lookout that is above the spring. It is a beautiful place. Hope this helps!

Tips for babysitting 5 kids at once OVERNIGHT?

Jennifer R

I am babysitting 5 kids overnight for $100 bucks. I need tips on supper's for the kids, games they could play and where i could take them, the mother said i can choose their bedtimes, what are suitable bed times? Here are the kids ages and names

Minnie: 12
Katie: 10
Ruthie: 12
Ashley: 8
Daisy: 4

Thanks!

Answer
Okay I've been babysitting for a million years it feels like.

Minnie, Katie, Ruthie, and Ashley can probably stay up til like 10..I would do jammies and before bed stuff at like 945.. Then tell them at 1030 your coming to the room and it's lights out. The 4 year old will probably start to get tired earlier but if you can keep her awake til10 let her because she will be even more tired and wont fight you on going to bed, plus getting to stay up with the big kids will have it's advantages. If she see's your letting her stay up with them she wont whine.(hopefully lol)

Dinner is easy, if there is mac n' cheese make that (2 boxes) hot dogs/chicken nuggets/fish sticks (anything they have that's easy to make and for them to eat that's in the freezer)

I always take my kids to the park or we just take a bike ride, usually the younger ones want to walk with me when the older ones ride their bikes or scooters etc. I make them stop at every corner and wait for me. That usually takes up time then after you can do snack or something..

Put in a movie after diner and by the time it's over it will be close to bed time anyways.

Hope everything goes well, good luck!
