what is the best way to bike with my toddler in Manila; a child seat or a trailer?

may-i

i want to bring my toddler to day care and me to work in my bike. i live in a university campus. there are a lot of cars and potholes en route. help.

Answer
Go for a bike seat my friend. Trailers tend to increase the length of the bike that can increase the chances of getting hit by something or turning. Drivers in the Philippines are quite rude by the way and you may not want to add that in factor.

bike seat or trailer for my toddler? which is safer and easier? which would he enjoy more? specific recs?

BB

I need a recommendation for my 18 month old to be able to go on bike rides with us. Is a trailer or a bike seat better? safer? more fun? what are good brands?

Answer
Personally I would go with the bike trailor. We have a bike seat and my son like to kick us in the back of the calf on the ride. Plus he's so big that there isn't much room for him and our butt back there! I would think they are more fun too, there's more to look at rather than your back and the side views lol.

What does Religion and bicycle training wheels have in common?

MoPleasure

Answer
You always get them when you're a kid, just as a matter of course. Your parents had them when they were kids, and so you must. You grow to be very comfortable with them. Then one day, someone says, you don't need those, you'll be just fine without them. All you have to do is try. Then there is inevitably screaming and crying, carrying on about how you know you can't get by without them, that you will fall. So you go on, pedaling merrily along with that comfortable safety blanket, until one day, either voluntarily out of curiosity, or by force, they are gone. And you try to ride. One of two things will happen: You will fall, just like you said you would, so you put the wheels back on, and there they will stay, and you spend your life wobbling safely back and forth on the driveway, never knowing or caring what else might be down the road and around the corner. Or...you ride without the wheels, and it's ok. It's hard at first, you might doubt a little of yourself, but pretty soon, you figure out that the wheels were just there as a guide, and you don't really need them. You come to trust in yourself, and in the laws of nature to keep you upright, and pretty soon you're going all over town, and you meet people you never would have known otherwise, see things you never knew existed, and up that high mountain trail, you get that epic view of the world that takes your breath away. You realize that your bicycle, unhindered by training wheels, represents freedom! And sometimes, as you're coasting happily down the road, you glance back at some poor, grown man still hopelessly dedicated to his training wheels, afraid to skin his knees. And he looks at you, with a mixture of disdain and envy, thinking how reckless you must be to go cruising down the street with nothing to hold you up but some vague scientific mumbo jumbo about gravity, inertia, momentum, yadda yadda yadda, best not to concern himself with that, when he's just fine with his trusty training wheels to keep him safe and sound. But at the same time, some small part of him thinks that it sure must be fun to fly down the road on two wheels.

At about what age should a child try to ride a bicycle without training wheels?

Laura in N

My son is 5 and doesn't really want to try to ride without them. Is that normal?

Answer
Hi, Laura! I'd say your son is totally in the normal range! It is a milestone, and I understand your worry. He'll catch on, though! We've had a couple neighbor kids ride without training wheels early--like around 3 1/2 to 4 years old--but our son was your son's age when he learned to ride a two-wheeler. Our daughter was 6. She learned during the summer before 1st grade. Even then, she didn't really want to try, but we worked with her and she finally got it. Do you have a nice, smooth street in front of your house with room for your son to practice? You could try raising the training wheels a little as he zips around out there. It's early in the season. He'll get it!

What bike is right for me?

Me

I am 12 years old, a guy, and I want to get a bike. I am 4ft 11in, with a 29 inch inseam. I want a bike that I can ride up and down my road, on my lawn and some gravel trails. What bike is right for me, and what frame size should I get? My mom says that I should just get an adult bike since I'll outgrow the kids bikes soon, but I don't know how reliable she is, lol. Thanks!

Answer
Hello Me, that's an interesting name :-)

First of all, since you are still growing, you will outgrow any bike you get (kid or adult sized). Your mom should know that there are many different sizes for adults too (it's not just one size for adults and that's it). So you may want to get the largest frame that will fit you comfortably. A road bike is out since you want to ride on your lawn and on gravel paths. A Cyclocross bike is a good option because it can handle most anything, is rugged and durable, is fast, and lightweight. Mountain bike also an option but you don't really need something so bold for your type of riding. I would go with either a cyclocross or hybrid bike.

Good luck.

What size of bike??????

Jose R

I have a 4 year old girl I was wondering what the proper size of bike I should get

Answer
Kids bikes are denoted by wheel size (unlike adult bikes) Take her to a bike shop (or sporting goods store but NOT kmart/walmart/target unless you want her to take biking)

A 12" is usually the smallest size then 16" 20" and 24". It all depends on how tall she is. You have to have her sit on a bike to see if it fits her right. Not all bikes are the same size even if they are listed as the same size. Different maufactuers do things differently. She is probably somewhere around a 16" size now thought. That said, remember she will outgrow it really soon. If she can sit on a 20" comfortably (even with the seat down pretty low) then that would be a bike she could grow in to.

Kids Bikes?

Want to buy my nephew a new bike for his birthday. He will be turning 4. What should I look for? I know he needs trainning wheels, but don't know what size to look for.

Answer
If he's small or average for his age he will need a 12" bike. If on the larger side maybe a 16". Both normally come with training wheels. Best thing is to head over to Wal Mart, Target, Toy r Us etc. and see how they fit. If it's a surprise you can always buy one and take it back if not right. Make sure to not get something he will grow out of by fall.

I would not take a 4 yo to a bike shop - most don't even carry kiddie bikes anyway.

is it legal to have kid seating at bike back in california?

jian l

if yes, what is the hardware requirement? and what is
the safety tips to carry a kid in bicycling?

Answer
A kid seat on the back of your bicycle is legal in California and a helmet is required. However, I strongly recommend against those seats. They make your bike top heavy and if you fall, your child falls with you. Your best bet is to buy a trailer to attach to your bike. They have roll cages and if your bike falls over, the trailer hitch has a pivot attachment which keeps the trailer upright. Also, if the trailer does happen to fall over, the roll cage (and helmet) will protect the child. Yes, trailers cost quite a bit more but ask yourself: Are you willing to sacrifice your child's life to save money?

Where can I find a bicycle trailer for three or more children?

Alasdair

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried to get more than two children aged between 1 and 6 years old in a bicycle trailer. I currently have a Schwinn trailer that is great for two at a time, but the two older kids have to be jammed in pretty tightly.

Answer
A standard carrier type child seat plus the trailer will let you carry three. (assuming the trailer attaches to chain stay)

I've seen a trailer attached to a tag a long. A bit dodgy though. With a good strong mount for the tag a long it might be O.K.. (preferably not a standard seat post mount.)
Your 6 year old will probably be too small for a Tag a long. (unless you can find a 16" version). Be very careful there is a lot of weight to pull up.

You should be able to get your 6 year old on a tandem with a set of kidback cranks. Pictured on this link (Late Great Sheldon Brown)

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tandkids.html

This would be the best option as it should give a few more years service as the kids grow.

Edit ******as an after thought. Custom fitting one of these trailers with seats could do the job also, but it will be a bit of a fiddle getting it balanced.

http://www.bikesatwork.com/bike-trailers/

Throw on a 2 into 1 brake lever and fit brakes to both trailer wheels. Use instead of your normal rear brake then you will be able to pull up the extra weight.

Yes or No . . . Kids Motorcycle?

Ms Brown E

Okay, I am living in the houston area and trying to find a children's motorcycle to buy my son that is turning 7 years old next week.

But, here is the problem. His stepdad doesn't think that he is ready for the motorcycle yet, and I do. I actually told him like 2 months ago that I wanted to buy this for my son and he agreed. But, now he is changing his mind.
He is a very caring and loving father to my kids, but this something that my son really wants and I want to get it for him. We have been promising him this for the past year or so for Christmas and then his past birthday, but money was a little low then.
What should I do?

Oh, can anyone tell me where I can find them in the houston area, other than Wal-Mart and Toys r' us?
Thanks for the responses. But, just to add....
I am NOT talking a real motorcycle.
I am talking a battery powered ride-on toy, much like the 4-wheeled one, but he wants one that looks like a motorcycle.
Something that does not go over 10mph.

Answer
My girls (ages 6 & 7) each have a dirt bike (50cc) and they love it. As long as he uses safety precautions and is watched by a responsible adult, he should be fine. :)

Since you clarified, won't he be growing out of the battery operated vehicles too soon? That's a big expense if he won't ride it but a year or so.

how to engage kids during holidays?

Swapna M

Answer
Wow! Kids have vacation and running out of ideas of things to do!? Well alot of factors depend on the possibilties, such as thier ages, if you work, what holiday ect.
But for names sake we'll say summer holidays, and that you work and they are between 6 and 11.
Great summer ideas to get the kids out of the house could be a water balloon day, kite flying, frisbee, art projects, swimming. If you don't work or have a free weekend, throw a kids summer party- your childen will have fun for the week planning. They can make their own freezy flavor pops, cut up fruit and play games in the yard like Coco-nut bowling using a coconut and some painted plastic coke bottles (if you don't mind to have a few parents over for tea and a little extra noise in the background. Or the kids could cook (sometimes you can find a child cooking course) and they can make simple things such as a pizza- or a small picknick and let them go off for their own little picknick.
Summer sports are always great to get the kids of the couch. Fishing, is oddly one of those things that people forget about, but kids of all ages no matter what sex tend to really enjoy it once they get out there (I always caught my hook on my brothers hand)
One of my favorites is Art projects (all children are naturally artistically inclined even though many of them get down when they see other children who they think are better artist than them). Have some spare cash and a little yard space? By some wood and help assemble a little fort house. The kids will have a blast decorating and painting their new club house! Children also tend to be great at mosaics and proud of the beautiful things they make! Gardening is another one of those things kids really begin to like once they get into it and why not but that newly moasic pot you just got into the mix?
Trips to museums, such as science museums and art ones can be fun and educational for the whole family! The list could go on depending on age and how much you want to keep them engaged. I used to be a supper nanny as well as a teacher- and I grew up in a very poor home. If you tell the kids to get off the couch and no tv until 6pm, they'll go out side and manage to be creative- it's what their minds are meant to do. Everything from turning a bike upside down and pushing the pedals with their hands playing pretend to swinging and spending time with friends is natural and healthy. While watching cartoons and playing video games non stop becomes a bit of a soul sucker. They might complain at first, but those things are a de-motivator to doing other more creative healthy physical activities. So use your imagination, keep it fun, and set the basic under score of some ideas for things for the kids to do and the rest will come naturally!

I need to buy a bike...?

nicole

So, I haven't had a bike since I was a kid, but I'd like to get back into it. I am only 5'2", so is there a specific size bike to buy? Do they even make bicycles in sizes? Any help is appreciated.

Answer
You can choose bicycles 26-inch and 24 - inch many for you

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.

Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.

Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.

What kind of bike should I get? Easy 10 points :)?

Q. I'm 12 years old and am supposed to be getting a new bike soon. Should I get an adult or kids bike and where should I get it from that had good prices? I would ride it daily and so it needs to be a bike that you won't need to change the tires on every month or even week! What kind and where do you think I should get my bike at? Thanks! :)

Answer
Short & simple answer... Go to a real bike shop in your neighborhood & ask questions - lots of questions. In fact, see ALL the bike shops in your area. Please stay away from discount store or big box store bikes. You're 12 yrs. old now - growing up. You'll want a bike that will last & last. Taken care of properly, a bike from a real bike shop will last for life! Discount store bikes tend to fall apart within just a few years - tops.

Google bicycle shop + your zip code. It'll bring them all up.

What Motocross Bike should i get?

NO!!!!!!!!

I am stepping up to a bigger dirtbike and i was wondering what bike would be best. A YZ85 or a YZ125. I am stepping up from a CRF100 and i have about 4 years of riding experience. I am going to be 16 years old in two weeks, I am 5 foot 8 inches tall and i weigh roughly 120 pounds. So what would be the best bet??

Answer
like that kid said the 250 has literally ass loads of low end and even more top end power. however, having a bike that will stand straight up in every gear with no effort by you may not be the best choice off an xr100. the 125 is a great bike. it has lots of power, but you have the choice of using it. The top end power is intense, but if you want to putt around in trails it'll do that too. You are too tall to actually use the 85 like its meant to be used.

What motocross bike for me?

I am screwed! i am getting a new bike this weekend and i dont know what to get between an 05 yz 125 or an 07 crf150r . please help. i am about 5 11 or so and about 190 lbs and my dad is saying the honda i am saying yz so help? what do you think?

Answer
Have you sat on the 150R? That is a kids bike made for riders around 5'5" or shorter. The YZ125, or any 2 stroke 125, is a very bad beginners bike but if these are your only two choices go for the YZ. At least it is made for grown ups. Personally I would keep looking as neither of these bikes is a good choice for you.

Pedal fell off kids bike?

peterngood

We bought a used bike and the left pedal fell off. I bought a package of new pedals and installed the left pedal (backward thread) but it too wore threadbare in a week and fell out. I drilled and tapped the pedal shaft with 8/32 thread added a washer and screw and the screw broke. I do not want to invest in a crank, any ideas please?

Answer
Obviously the crank threads are stripped. Assuming you're too cheap or broke (nuthin wrong with that - it happens) to buy a new crank (not that expensive for a kids bike), you should be able to garbage pick a bike with similar cranks.

How do you teach your kid to pedal riding toys?

eaglewanna

We have bought our four year old son a toddler bike with training wheels but he refuses to pedal and only makes a half-heared attempt at it.

Answer
The wheels on most bikes turn when the wheels move. Just put his feet on the pedals and then push him around. He probably doesn't like having to work it himself. But if he sees how fun it can be, he'll probably get motivated and want you to stop pushing him so he can do it himself. Try it on the driveway where it's easier to pedal.

Name some good bicycle helmets for kids 9-15 yrs and why are they so good?

mark_hensl

Is their any additional padding that a child should have on their little bodies, or will the helmet suffice?
Thanks.

P.S. is it a national law that parents must wear a helmet? If so what do you where and why? Any other pads? Thanks.

Answer
All Wal*Mart helmets or other chain / low cost store helmets have passed safety standards in the U.S. That's why thaey can be sold here...

So.. anything you buy will meet the same standards... Expensive or cheap.

Buy something that your child likes (color / graphics), otherwise they will fight wearing it...

The bigger the vents, the cooler they are.. probably not a critical thing for a child sitting in a bike seat not doing any strenuous exercise, but once your 9 to 15 year old is doing the hard work of pedaling, then a cooler helmet will be nice.

Expensive helmets are usually lighter, and have bigger vents... That's where the differences are... Not in the amount of protection they offer.

My state does not have a helmet law (bicycles or motorcycles). so there is nothing "National".. your state may have specific helmet laws.. you need to check on that.

BMX helmets give the illusion of offering more protection.. it may be more than an illusion though. They cover more of the skull. They are more like a hockey helmet... They have a higher "cool" factor than a regular bike helmet... since they are also used by the skateboard gang.. They may be a bit heavier though.

Fingerless gloves with padding in the palms are the only other riding item I would suggest...

Do your kids wear helmets when they ride a bicycle?

It was pretty bad and it made me wonder if kids wear helmets anymore. So do your kids wear helmets when they ride bicycles? Why or why not? Thank you :)

4 &2 year old dirt bike racing?

Jacke

I'd like to get my 4&2 year old sons into dirt bike racing.... any info on how to get started, the best bike to get and the best/cheapest place to get the bikes would help, thankes if it helps I'm from Ohio
Thanks, if you happen to see John R send him my way jackegolden@yahoo.com
French, I figured 2 years was too young but I was told by a few people that they need to start training at 2, thanks so much!

Answer
There is no sections for racing for 2 year olds as they are just too young. In most places the lowest age grouping is 4 years to 6 years and they race stock pee wee junior class up to 51cc. The best bikes to start on would be a little crf50 or a Yamaha Pee Wee 50. Being a honda or Yamaha parts are easily obtained and they are pretty much bomb proof.
Just look up classifieds in your area if you are not buying new and see if you can take someone who knows bikes with you to view them.
You would be best to contact your local track about racing and ask them firstly when they have practise days as no one should race before having time to practise. Take your 4 year old to those and then you can ask about racing. You need to be friendly to others at the track with kids your children's age as among them will no doubt be some dads who race themselves and they will be able to help you with the basics. A warning though once you start down this path it can lead to a very low bank balance if you children decide they want to race for the next 15 years or more.

What size bike for 4 year old?

Mom to Mat

My son is going to turn 4 in 2 weeks. We decided we wanted to get him his first real bike for his b-day. We went last night to get one and we were talking to a salesmen about what size we should get for him. They had 12in and 16in. He told us that age 4 is kind of in the middle of the 2 sizes so it was more difficult so we decided since we didn't want him to grow out of it too fast we would get the 16in. I just wanted to make sure it's not going to be TOO big for him. Some reviews online said it would be good for ages 4-7 but others said 6-8. We got him the Disney Cars bike (that they sell at Walmart, Target & Toys R Us) it does have an adjustable seat and handlebars. Like I said he is almost 4 and is about 41-42in tall. What do you all think?

Answer
just bring the child to the bike have him sit on it and if he can sit on the seat and tip toe the ground and stand over the bar and not rack himself on it, it is the right size, or ask a friend whos kid is the same size to try it out or ask other parents of kids the same height as we are on here what size bike their kid uses

Need hlp sizing a bike for my son.?

Erik G

My son will be 5 on Jan 1st :) and he is big for his age about 3ft in height and 50 to 55 Lbs. I was thinking a 16 inch would be a good size just not sure. I know it sounds weird that I'm asking but Mom is being very difficult and we are currently in the middle of a custody hearing that after all is said and done he will be with me 50% of the time :) so I don't have him yet to get an accurate size. Ugh I wish I could find that perfect world where things like this don't happen. Anyways if there are any parents out there that have a similar size boy can tell me the appropriate size to get I would greatly appreciate it thanx.

Answer
Erik,
I'm happy you will have equal custody, I fought hard for it and failed. Now you're here asking for advice about your son's bike - very cool.

Yes, even if he's big for 5 he still needs a 16" wheeled bike. Kids bikes are cheap and it's silly to buy one that will fit in 2 years! A good fitting bike during this time when he will be two wheeling in the next year or so is important.

I have two girls 9 & 11 now and I been though this. I'm really into cycling so my girls benefited from it. Your son may out grow it in a year but it's much better than having it too big and him being frustrated attempting to use it.

Keep the tires hard the seat up so his knees aren't bent too much and oil the chain. That's about all I've done for my girl's 12, 16, 20 and 24" bikes.

Good luck and cherish all the time you are together. It goes so fast. Get yourself a bike and ride with him.

Merry Christmas

Tricycle suggestions for a SHORT toddler?

I'd rather

My (almost) 2 year old daughter is 3rd percentile for weight, and 17th for height. She badly wants a bike of her own, but I'm having trouble finding a trike small enough to allow her to touch the peddles.

any suggestions?
I think she's 32 inches tall, at the most

Answer
When my son first got his trike, my husband duct taped wood blocks to the pedals so that he could reach. But at that age, pedaling is complicated, so my son ended up just using his feet to push against the ground while he sat on the trike. He didn't start pedaling until later when he was about tall enough to take the blocks off anyway.

What would be the most affordable bike to get that is safe to put a 2 year old on the back?

Hey There - we are looking to get a couple of bikes to ride around white rock lake with our 22 month old son. We are novices - so we just want something decent, but doesn't need to be the tour de france. Also - what is the best seat for the baby to get? Thanks!

Answer
You do not put a child of 22 months on a bike!!! Are you out of your mind?

OTOH your child can ride WITH you on almost any bike with age appropriate compatible equipment

The child goes on/in the equipment, the equipment attaches to the bike/bikes you choose.

Got it?

Generally speaking if/when your child is old enough to hold his/her head up WITH an infant helmet the progression is usually this:

infant to toddler - best solution is a child trailer. Your kid is sheltered, somewhat protected, sheltered from the sun, and if YOU take a tumble the trailer stays upright!! This will let you go from novice to experienced while your child is safe.

A trailer can go on almost any bike. Some will convert from trailer to jog/stroller.

Check with your local bike shop.

DO NOT BUY AT A BOX STORE. Your LBS will show you how to attach it safely and use it and what bikes will be compatible.

Toddler to lets say maybe 4-5 depending on kid. Some manner of rear mounted child seat. Who knows what will be available by the time the fruit of your loins reaches that age. Same principle, go to your LBS and have them show you how to safely attach it to your bike.

BTW in all this and at all stages GET A HELMET FOR YOUR CHILD and you too. Makes no sense for the child to survive and you to be relearning the alphabet. ;-)

5-9 or so depending on child: tag-along trailer. Like a tandem in principle attaches to your bike. Your child can pedal ... or not. But gets the feeling of participating and helps Mom/Dad move along. You know where said child is (behind you). Said child is not likely to hit me or veer all around the trail unless you do that too ;-)

9 and up plus or minus depending on your child, their interest etc now you may be talking ride with their very own bike or some equip a tandem with crankset the right length for said kid (which can be adjusted as your kid grows)

Have fun out there!!!!!!

Trail-a-Bike vs. Trailer?

Rosie B

I have a 4 year old son and would like to bring him along for bike rides. Which is the better option in your opinion, a trailer or a "trail-a-bike"?

Answer
Four is a between age.

If he was 3 it would be a no-brainer for the trailer

If he was 6 I would lean to the tag-along as most 6 yr olds have bicycle balance.

Since we have no idea on how your son is on a bike now, it's a difficult answer. Does he ride a bike already? I mean without training wheels. He should know balance before climbing on the tag-along. While I know what SoccerRefToo means by having a child on a tandem, a tag-along are different handling. They are a cross between a tandem and a trailer.

If he doesn't have balance on a bike yet either buy a used trailer to use for a season or two (have other younger kids?) or teach him to ride a bike without training wheels. You do that by lowering the seat so his feet are flat on the ground with his knees bent. Remove the pedals. Have him master balance by using it as a push bike. He will learn faster as he won't have to pedal to move or learn how to use brakes. His feet will do that on the ground. THEN put him on the tag-along.

what bike should i get?

i am 13 years old 5'3 and recently ride a 70cc dirt bike i want a new bike for trail riding but dont know what to get either a raptor 250,klx 140,or a kx 85 (also if you have any other bikes you recommed tell me)

Answer
A kid your age & size has no business being on anything bigger than a 110cc 4 stroke or 100cc 2 stroke play bike. Yamaha TTR 90, Yamaha RT 100, Yamaha TTR 110, Honda XR 100, Honda CRF 100, Suzuki DRZ 110, Kawasaki KLX 110, and Kawasaki KE 100 are your choices.

I have been trail riding in Northern Michigan for 34 years. I began trail riding when I was 6 years old. I raced Enduros and Hare Scrambles for 12 years. I competed in the International Six Days Enduro twice. I know what I am talking about.

bmx bike buying?

Q. my younger brother wants a bmx bike. he is 9 and i dont want to get him a $500 bike if hes just going to mess it up. the problem is im not sure what a good brand or a good price for a bike is.

Answer
When you invest that amount of money into a bike, you definately wouldnt want to see it get thrashed or worse yet, thrashed by one of the neighbor kids that begged to ride it.
If your looking for an everyday bike that can take the punishment that 9yr olds tend to give, I would go to walmart or target, or toys r us to buy one of those tanks that really do stand up to brutal abuse and have a life expectancy of around 2-3yrs.
If your bro races bmx then by all means, it will be money well invested. You can get a top-of-the line bike with all the bells and whistles for that price. Your local bike shop can set you up or check out craigslist.org. Theres always a few listings with pictures. Redline, Gt, Alliant, Cheeta/robinson, powerlite, are good brands. And the cost can range from $125 on up.
Check craigslist.org. Thats where the best bikes are for next to nothing. Good luck!

does fisher price still make that small white bike with the pedals on the front wheel?

mypixees3

Fisher Price Little People Toddler Bike that is what it is called, it is white with red and blue lettering, the pedals come off the front wheel and there are training wheels on it

Answer
I believe my daughter had a similar bike by Fisher Price except it was white with pink and lilac. It looked a bit like a tricycle with pedals on the front. However, the rear wheel was more like a bike with two training wheels. The wheels could fold in to make one really large rear wheel. Eventually, you could remove them altogether. Our bike would have been at least a 14 year old design. I have not see one quite like it since then.

I looked at the Fisher-Price website. it appears to me that the ones with pedals on the front wheel are more like a tricycle while the little ones that are more like a bike seem to have pedals and chains designed more like a bike now.

Here is a link to what I think is the current model of the bike you are talking about.

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=10&e=outdoorfunproduct&pid=38042

The rigid plastic tires look like they have a different tread design. I hope this one works better. My daughter's was so hard to pedal. It never gripped well on cement I think due to a bit of sandy residue on the concrete. It could not be pedalled well over the lawn either. Fortunately we were given the bike second hand, so we did not loose money on it. It did not work anywhere near as well as the metal tricycles I had as a kid. We eventually just got my daughter a nice small bike with training wheels.

Today, in a bike store, we saw a very tiny two wheeler with no pedals. It was designed for a very small child to just balance and scoot along. A few posts that I have read here lead me to believe that this may be a much better design for learning.

Here is one that is similar in design. I cannot vouch for the quality of this bike. I am just posting it for design reference.

http://www.coochicoos.com/toys/post_26.html

I have seen a couple of models where the wheels could be added on at a later date too. Perhaps someone here will be able to tell you if any decent small child's bike could have the pedals removed to begin with.

is this a good bike for beginners? FMF pro xxxl 20 inch ?

jha12477

I looking a getting my kids in BMX.. How much would a bike like this cost new.. we saw one at the track and my boys liked it.

Answer
Hi, glad to see your kid's enjoy BMX.

I don't really know FMF bmx, i never really dealed with them..

But if i am right (i am not sure correct me if i'm wrong) the FMF pro XXL is only a frame, not a complete BMX. but like i said, i'm not sure.

Anyways, FMF is a pretty good beginer bike.

I would also go look at Eastern, Fit, Subrosa, MacNeil, Animal and odessey bmx. they are the top bmx compagnie's..

for a complet bmx a good one, around 300-1200$ for a good one. chek www.danscomp.com

it also really depend's on what kind of bmx your kid's will do, there's 4 kind's of bmx and all 4kind's have diferent ting's on them. theres : Vert, Park, Flatland, Dirt. ask them it's importent.

hope it helped

How do you straighten a bicycle wheel? 20 inch kids bike.?

iceman2

Answer
If it has spokes - there is a small tool you can buy that twists a small nut type flange at the outer wheel side of the spokes tighten on the ones that you want to pull with and loosen the opposite ones (close by not on opposite side of wheel entirely) accordingly - it's not hard - you'll figure it out.

just be patient and thorough and you can get it very straight even as a beginner.

Why is there such a big price difference between a Target bike for $100 vs the $600+ bikes at the bike store?

Rolly

I want to get a bike to get some exercise everyday and burn some calories and have a little fun riding around while I am doing it. Do I really need to spend $600+ dollars on a bike at a bike a store or can a $100 dollar Target/Walmart bike do the trick?

Also, what kid a bike should I get? Mountain, 12 speed, etc?

Answer
There are a number of differences between "department store" bikes and bike shop bikes. I am an avid mountain biker so this mostly relates to mountain bikes, but the principals apply to both on and off-road bikes. (I bought a relatively cheap bike shop bike about 18 months ago, a Mongoose Wing Comp ($450) with mid-range componentry but with bad rims; I have already replaced it with a Jamis Dakar XC Comp ($1,800). The Mongoose has a decent frame, but the componentry just won't hold up; I am a proponent of saving your money and buying a better bike; you will be much happier and you won't get stranded on a trail because of sub-standart equipment)
First, the frames are not designed to be ridden the same; on all dpt. store bikes, there is a sticker that will warn you that this bike is not made for jumping or competitive riding; the metal is much cheaper and often much heavier, more brittle, welds are not as good, the derailleru hangers are not replacable (MTB) which is extremely important when you start doing more off-road riding.
Second, the rims will more than likely be single-walled or extremely cheap double-walled that will not stand up to any abuse on an off-road trail. On my Mongoose mentioned above, I had to replace both rims within 4 weeks of buying the bike. The hubs will also be generally "recreational" and will fall apart after 3-4 months, if the rims last that long.
Third, the derailleurs will be bottom-of-the-line. They will more than likely need constant adjustment and maintenance. They also are much slower when shifting than the more expensive set-ups.
Another really weak point is the handlebars; they don't use a very expensive component and I have seen several broken handlebars in the past. This can be extremely dangerous and can cause you to really injur yourself.
Lastly (not really, but I'm talking too much), the dept. store bikes will all be one size and that might or might not fit you or your needs.
Bottom line, the department store bikes will work fine for you if you don't plan to do any serious off-road riding (jumping, rocks, downhill, etc.) or if you don't plan on riding every day. If you must buy a department-store bike, make sure you are buying something with Shimano "Tourney" or "Altus" deraillerus; the low-end SRAM or the Falcon that I have seen are not going to last and will require constant maintenance and adjustment; you won't be happy. Also, don't ride the bike harder than it was designed to be ridden. There are several bikes in the $400-$700 range made by Jamis and Trek. Also, since it is nearing the end of a model year, you should be able to find some 2007 models at discounted prices, sometimes as much as 25%. If you can find $400 to $500, then you will have some luck, you just have to look. Here are some websites that you might want to look at. BEFORE you buy anything, RIDE IT!!! Don't let anyone sell you a bike that they are not willing to let you at least buzz around the parking lot. Good luck and happy riding!!!

If you live in New Zealand, can you write me about your life?

Joe

I'm going to be staying there for a year and I want stories. I'm sorry if it sounds like an invasion of privacy, but I won't know who you are. Just leave names and shit out. I really want to hear stories. :)

Answer
Hi :) Here is a basic story of my life :P

I am a 17year old female born in Auckland, NZ. 3 weeks later my family moved to Whakatane, where we lived in 2 homes, one next door to Mongrel Mob members, and then later next to the community constable!! lol. When we lived next door to the Mongrel Mob family, one of their kids kept walking across our front lawn with a defiant attitude, so one day mum baked some cookies and made friends with him - he never did it again...... And when we lived door to the policeman, my older sister used to go over and play with his daughter. Well one day, she went over and played with the toys (the other little girl wasn't there) and the constable didn't realise and left home locking my sister in his house!! haha I don't think his workmates let him forget that one in a hurry!

I'm not sure where and what we did after that, but we ended back up in Auckland where we rented a house in Oratia, West Auckland. That was great as it was right next to an exotic plant orchard and there were heaps of feijoa, passionfruit and other yummy fruit trees. That was the place where my bunny disappeared to who knows where - I don't even know how he got out, there were no holes or anything, and where a huge native weta crawled up my mums arm while she was reading - poor thing, it was more scared of her than she of it! lol.

A few years of living there, we moved to the South Island, to Christchurch to look after dads parents house while they went to England for a few months. Probably the most memorable thing that happened down there was the times I tagged along with my brother (older by 2 years) riding our bikes - to school, the bike track, all sorts of places. It was great. I don't think he'd let his little sister tag along now though lol.

Then, we moved down to Wanaka!! Now that was cool. And if you ever get a chance to travel to the south Island, go to Wanaka/ or Queenstown. There is sooooo much to do there and the countryside is just beautiful. And the fruit! MMMMmmm yum! Unfortunately, it didn't snow very heavily, just one day it snowed a light sprinkling as we came out of school. That was pretty cool. The next day all the kids were having snow fights and piling snow onto this little hill outside the classrooms and sliding down. It was packed so solid from all the sliding down that it was almost as if it were ice - and very slippery! It was really cold that day, we were all huddled around the heater in the morning. Why are schools always cold??!!!! haha

We moved back to Auckland 7 years ago, and thats where we've been ever since (we moved back on my birthday so that was delayed and I was not impressed :P ). I have been to Australia, and am going there in a few months again. During my whole life, though, we have taken many trips around the country so to date I have only never been to Cape Reinga and Invercargill. I'll get there sooner or later :D. I have been to 9 schools in total (including kindergarten) and I am in year 13 (my last year).

Now that you've got me to thinking about it, I am very privileged to have had all these experiences, plus more, and I thank God for all the blessings he has given me. My family is not rich, but we make the most of things and somehow manage to get through by working hard and trusting God.

Well, that is my life in a nutshell....there is so much more, but it'd take a whole book or more to write it all. If you have any other questions about my life in NZ feel free to email me by going onto my Yahoo! profile, and click email me lol.

Hope I wasn't too boring. (but you did ask, and I was bored.... :D ) cya

Bikes for kids what brand should I go for it?

AW0405

decent bike for age 5, 9 &11.

Answer
Forget Brands!

At their age they won't give a hoot, A cheap store bike is just the job!
Avoid cheap full suspension because they will fall to bits before your kids grow out of them (which is another reason I said buy cheap, 'cos in next to no time they will be too big for them)

If you are determined to get Branded stuff then check these out, they specialize in kids bikes.

Best of Luck.

EDIT: Nice of you to amend your answer Bob, after I have given mine! (It's protocol on the cycling site to show ammendments, - just so you know for next time OK?)

What pit bike brands are good quality?

Pearse N

Ive been looking around for a pit bike and i see a lot that are in my budgert but i am just wondering if they are a quality brand worth buying.

So what are a few good brands of pit bikes that i should look for

Answer
Any "pit bike" you find online will be cheap Chinese crap. The only good pit bike will be a small kids Japanese dirt bike or a BBR MM12P for $3995.
