Nic

im a kid im 12 years old im a boy and i am about 4'6-4'7 and i need a cheap bike. either off the internet or a store
i live in windham newhampshire, and im looking for a bike around 100-200 dollars
thanks

Answer
Look on the local ebay ans Craig's list for a good quality used bike. You may have to go with a bike with 24 inch wheels for a proper fit. Have your Dad go with to check out the bikes. You can also try the local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores.

What type of bike should I get?

lolzfresh

I am a 15 year old boy, 5' 6", and I ride from 5-7 miles a day on sidewalks and roads. My budget isn't too much around 200-250 max. Also how many inch wheel would be perfect for me? My aim is to get taller and I have heard riding bikes are a good way to gain height. Thanks
Also what brand of bike is recommended?

Answer
Riding a bike alone will not help you get taller. Riding a bike will keep you healthy, which in turn will help you grow. Once into adult sized bikes, they are measured by frame size - not wheel size. So you need a bike with either 26" or 700C wheels. Stay away from bikes with 24" wheels. Kid's bikes. You're no longer a kid.

Now you need to determine how & where you will be riding. You stated mostly on the streets. Stay off sidewalks when possible. Yeah - a mountain bike looks cool. With the knobby tires, it's terrible on the streets. I would recommend a comfort and/or hybrid bike. Only one problem - your budget of $200-$250. All that will get is a piece of junk from a discount store. You're 15 now. You want a bike that will last? Stay away from discount store bikes.

I'd be looking on craigslist or other sites for a quality used bike. Look for brand names like Raleigh, Trek, Specialized, Giant, etc. The only good Schwinn is one that originally sold from a real bike shop. Discount store Schwinn bikes are in a different division - Pacific-Cycle...junk.

To look up a bike's specs & original price use BikePedia.com. Start in the upper left corner, choose the year, then the brand name, then the specific bike. Example: You will find a 2008 Schwinn Sierra GS listed because it came from a real bike shop. You will NOT find a Schwinn Link (sold at Wally World) listed because it's a discount store bike.

I would like to start bike riding to shed some baby weight what are the best bike trailer/bike combos?

best kids bike to learn on on best sellers the new york times best sellers children s books ...
best kids bike to learn on image

Yeah Momma

i need a bike and want to buy a bike trailer, what type of bike should be used?

Answer
- how much do you want to/can you spend?
- what kind of trailer - cargo or kid?
- how long and where do you want to ride (urban/country, flat/hilly/mountainous)?
- commuting or sports/training?
- what's your weight - and do you do any kind of sports?
- are you fixed on a bike/trailer combo, or would a (two or three wheeled) bakfiets be a practical alternative?

Unless you want to lay down at least 4k$/â¬, there's no sense in talking about 'best'. You can start thinking about 'good' (enough for everyday use) with 2k$/⬠and either the willingness to learn basic maintenance or a friendly LBS within reach.

As a short guide to what I'd consider best (I'll just throw in a few buzzwords, use google or come back here if you want to know more):
- steel frame, touring geometry, Rohloff dropouts
- Rohloff internal geared rear hub
- SON front hub generator
- Edelux front bike light, b&m rear light
- Magura hydraulic disc brakes
- disc brake rims, Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires in 26x2.00, DD stainless spokes
- Brooks leather saddle
- closed chain box, e.g. Hebie Chainglider

That'll cut down the yearly maintenance to the gear oil change and regular inspection (and occasional exchange) of brake pads and chain.

- Weber hitch
- brand trailer - for kids, Chariot or Croozer, for cargo, Roland or Carry Freedom

I never learned how to ride a two wheeler as a kid just a tricycle.

I've tried the Giant Suede and the Schwinn Town and Country Trike and was looking at the Townie. $500 is about my price range.
By tried I mean I hopped on and sat on it while the saleswoman held the front wheel. The trike I was able to get on an d go obviously =D

Answer
You will have to judge if a three wheeler will meet you needs.

I will tell you how to learn to ride a two wheeler. Buy a low cost Dahon folding bike and get a bike helmet. Drop the seat way down so you can stand up while sitting on the seat. Wear your helmet and long pants. Go to a local park during quiet hours when no one is there. Drop the seat on the Dahon so low that it can be used as a scooter with both of your feet flat on the ground. With helmet on and riding in the soft grass in the park walk around with your weight on the seat and getting the hang of the steering. Don't use the pedals at all and in fact they can even be removed from the bike. When you get too far leaned to one side use the leg on that side to right yourself and start again. This will take most adults about 1-2 weeks of visits to the park to get the hang of it. After a while you will be able to coast and hold your legs off the ground for several seconds before the bike loses speed and leans over. At that point you can try to actually start pedaling.

Has anyone yet designed an infant seat for bike trailers?

best kids seats for bikes on best sellers the new york times best sellers children s books ...
best kids seats for bikes image

Arwen

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
@Old hippie, the infant car seat could be secured to the bike trailer and have it rear facing. In the car, it needs to be reclined no more than 45 degrees, but a parent could recline it more than this on a bike trailer to keep their newborns airway open and to prevent their child's head to their chest (especially going uphill)- more at 60 and 80 degrees from vertical on a bike. Remember that if the seat is installed in the car, it needs to be no more than 45 degrees.

This is because they aren't going to use the seat to withstand crash forces- just to secure the child for the ride.

Here is an article about the American Academy of Pediatric policy regarding bike trailers. They recommend that, "...adults should carry only children 12 months or older and weighing less than 40 pounds."

These are just recommendations and a parent can take what they want from what the AAP says. Because I don't agree with all policy decisions by the AAP.

Instead of having the child ride in the back with a jury-rigged infant car seat why not wear the baby with a wrap? There is the Moby Wrap or the Ergo carrier.

*Sigh* Many people haven't lived or visited Cambodia. You would never know how people ride on motorcyles and their bikes with their infants. That being said, I'm not sure if it is safe though. I just haven't heard about children dying in bike trailers.

Here is an article about why bike trailers may not be as dangerous as people think: http://www.mnn.com/family/protection-safety/blogs/bike-trailers-child-safety-and-the-medias-fear-
agenda

Whoops! Forgot to put the AAP article in: http://aapnews.aappublications.org/content/30/7/18.6.full

Why all the thumbs down? I haven't ever heard of many children getting killed being hit by a vehicle in a bike trailer. In contrast, I have heard plenty of children getting killed while in a crash being *in* the vehicle. Statistics just don't lie.

I'm all for safety, but I just don't understand by these trailers are just deemed as so dangerous. What magically happens when a child is 12 months old? If the car seat can be tightly tied down in the trailer, I just don't see how that would be any different.

I want a neighborhood with low crime rates, great schools, and a low population. A place where kids can ride their bikes and ice cream trucks go by...and there's oak trees. Kind of like the neighborhood from desperate housewives. I grew up in the city and it wasn't that great.

Answer
way too many to list.

How do I keep my kids bike chain from always coming off?

Dyslexia o

The bike is new only a couple months old,I have no tools and the neighbor is always putting it back on. Is their a way to keep it on?
Its a cheap walmart bike.

Answer
Try to take it back to WalMart and see if they can fix it. If not, get your money back. The rear wheel needs to be straight so that the cog is aligned with the chain ring and tensioned tight enough to hold the chain in place but not so tight as to damage the chain.

Without tools, you can't fix this yourself.

I've been looking around, and there doesn't seem to be a rain cover for my kid's bike seat, so the kid is going to get soaked next time it rains and we're out for a bike ride.

Its been suggested to get a trailer which will be under cover, but that's not really an option since I can't get through the gates near where we live with a trailer behind my bike.

Answer
I don't think one exists but how about the old school rain poncho that the kid can wear and it will also drape right over the seat. If you can't find one small enough then maybe modify one to fit. Good Luck.

I just bought a bike for my 12 and 13 year old. I have one bike I'm going to sell, but I don't know how much to charge them. Also I just bought a new camera and now running low on some cash. I need to buy a new set of golf clubs for my 12 year old too.

Answer
It would depend a lot on how much you spent. If it was an inexpensive bike, possibly bought at a department store, you might be better off donating it to good will or to the Yellow Bike Project and taking it off on your income tax. A bike that old will not bring much in return. If it was more of a high-end bike, you may get something for it, but again things have changed so much in that time, probably not very much.

If it is a high-end bike, you might go by a local bike shop and ask them.

If you really want a price, I would guess you could not get ore than $10 or $15. You might get a bit more if it is in good condition.

Parents: How do you teach your kids to handle pain once it happens?

Floymin

I'm not talking about keeping their hand away from a stove or light socket - that's avoiding pain. I mean once they've fallen or gotten hit. Do you coddle them, or tell them to toughen up? Describe any strategies you've used.

Answer
My girls have always been very good at simply AVOIDING pain, my son on the other hand, not so much...during his football games, wrestling tournaments, BMX Biking our Philosophy (His and Mine) is " If there's no bone showing or blood spurting, then suck it up and walk it off", he knows if he is TRULY INJURED I will be right there...if he is a little HURT he'll get over it...in the 11 years he has been playing Sports he has had only 1 true injury and that was last year in a State Wrestling Tournament Medal Round, he came down HARD on his right shoulder, instantly breaking his Clavicle..he looked over at me and his Coaches and gave a NOD...we KNEW he was INJURED not just hurt and needed help...we immediately came to his aid and off to the Hospital we went!

best kids bikes 12 image

Evan

I am 12 and I am saving up money for a ps3 how can I make easy money without having to touch a lawnmower and take out the trash?

Answer
1. Go to craigslist and make an account\

2. Post a add under community/childcare or pet care be sure to make it sound like you can babysit very well, I say i will take attentive care of your child while you are away. be sure to put your cell-phone number, not your home phone, but if you don't have a cell than home phone is fine

3. make lots and lots of posters about your babysitting and use all the tips i said in step 2. Put them around places not near a highway, place them on posts around neighborhoods where people like to walk.

4. Bike or walk around until you see a women/man who has children and give them a "flyer" and ask if they need a babysitter. ( I got 2 jobs this way)

5. BE SURE TO BE ASSERTIVE!! Ask for an amount of money and STICK TO IT! if they don't want to pay you that much then tell them by. You DO NOT want to look like a kid that people can take advantage of.

Thank you for reading, hope it helps dude.

How much should it cost to replace a bike tire?

Q. Before I call the local bike shop to get ripped off, I am curious to know how much others have paid to fix a little boys bike? Tire is flat and I can't get it off the bike. It's style with big trick rods in the middle of rear wheel. My son loves his bike but if I'm gonna spend more than $60 then I'd rather get a new one.
Oops, I meant the inner tube needs to be replaced. Bike Doctor won't work on his tires.

Answer
$10 to $15 dollars labor, plus price of tube (about $6) most shops make their livings with repeat customers, and will not try and rip you off. if the mechanic says the tire needs to be replaced because of a large gash, worn out tread, or cracking due to dryness, ask him to show you. new tires for that kind of bike usually start at around $12. he or she may be trying to make more money, but they also have the safety of your kid in mind as well. believe me, people in bike shops are not getting rich!

I'll be giving a new bike as a Christmas present to my 14 years old nephew, and I've narrowed my options to a Mongoose MTB at Wal-Mart, made in China for $115.00, or a Benotto MTB at the Bike Shop, made in Mexico, for $122.00... Both are aluminium frame, with front suspension, and while the Mongoose has a more 'modern' style, the Benotto looks more classical... Obviously the kid is not a pro racer and just want to have some fun in the streets...
I guess that you can find the specs in their pages:
mongoose.com
benotto.com

Answer
Without taking the time to compare the specs, I would strongly suggest the model from your local bike shop. My reason? Would you want some teenager making minimum wage to assemble your car, or would you choose to have it done by someone who is properly trained and does it all day every day? I can't tell you how many times I've walked past the bikes in WalMart and wondered how long before we hear about major lawsuits...

Answer
As a former police officer and crime prevention officer the best deterrent for ANY burglar is a dog.
The dog does not need to be attack, and best not to have an attack animal.
If you can find a medium to large dog that has a good bark, very few burglars will attempt entry, naturally for fear of being bitten.
Best, if you can raise the dog as a family member, from a pup. Most dogs of medium size learn who belongs where and are naturally protective of family and their space.
Shepards, Chows, Heelers...all exceptional and very smart.
They key is to raise them as family,,,Good luck, any other questions..hit me up.

What age do kids normally learn to ride a bike without training wheels?

best bikes for kids to learn image

Jazmyn

My daughter is almost 7 and doesn't know how and is scared she will fall. I'm just trying to figure out if she is behind other kids.

Answer
It is just fine that kids are learning at 4 or 5, but 7 is not too old either. There are so many factors, most of which are exposure and opportunity, that come into play. The avid rider's kids may ride much more often than someone else's so that one kid has 40 hours on a bike by age 4 when it takes another child to age 7 to get 40 hours. My main point is not to be concerned with being behind; many kids learn up to age 9, with the average age being around 6.
If her fear is really preventing her from trying, suit her up with helmet, elbow and knee pads. Tap the pads while on her so that she can know what it feels like. Be silly about tapping the pads, like it hurt your finger or something.

How many of you riders learned to ride at 16 in the street on a street bike?

Ride on

How many learned to ride off road long before they ever got their licence. I ask because I don't think in traffic is a good place for a 16 year old kid to learn to ride.

Answer
I think I was 25. Don't want to do the math. On a '74 Honda CL360. But I did live 1\2 mile up a dirt road in a rural area. The shortcut to work was out the other way. With no town maintenance past my driveway. I agree with you about 16 yr. olds in traffic. I also don't think most should drive a car at 16, but that's a different argument.

Reasons you should wear a helmet on a bike or motorcycle?

*~*love*~*

I have to do any essay on why helmets should be worn with a bicycle and motorcycle.
I need 3 reasons: so far I have that it keeps you safe and it really doesn't inconvenient a person to wear one.
I need help with a 3rd reason though.
Any ideas?

Answer
It's a good example for younger children. All little kids should wear them because they have a greater chance of falling off and hurting themselves. If they see older kids and adults wearing them, they might be more inclined to.

Answer
Have you thought about a bike trailer? If you get a good quality one (Burley or Chariot), its not hard to pull at all and the resale value is fantastic.

I went with a trailer for the simple fact that if I ever fell over, my child would be safely tucked in the trailer instead of falling over, too.

when i was 15 i really did prefer gift cards. then i could get what i wanted. if he likes football, maybe you can get some tickets for a football game. doesnt necessarily have to be NFL but maybe a college game, or even a good highschool game. if he likes to ride his bike alot, you can get him some bike accessory to encourage him to keep using it and stay active. maybe like, i dunno, a trailor thing for the bike so he can go shopping with it, they have these weird covering things you put over your bike, and its like a kind of a shelter thing lol sounds weird but if he likes to bike in the rain its something to look into. i suppose you can get him a new video game but it might be better to get him a gift certificate for one, for an electronics store, or if he plays a certain game you can sometimes buy cards for the game itself so they can buy weapons and stuff for their characters. there are also all kinds of collectors items related to video games out there. toys and stuff related to the game. you can also try to find a vintage video game set, like an old original nintendo system or atari or something like that, with some games. you can try on ebay, or other local trading posts. if it works and has all the proper cords and paddles, they can be alot of fun for a video game fan. some of those old games are harder than new ones. so theres original Nintendo. called Nintendo entertainment system, or NES for short, then there is Super Nintendo System, SNES, and there are other brands, like Sega, You can get Sega Genisis, or Sega Saturn, Or SegaMegaDrive. There are older ones still, like Atari (remember Pong?) or a brand called Coleco. there are others still. you can check out http://www.old-computers.com/ for more information on those games and other old computer systems. they also sometimes feature items for sale on there. but at least it can give you brand names and games to look up. personally, if i was a 15 year old video game fan, i would want one of those old systems, because vintage is the cool thing these days. prices range from very cheap, like 20 dollars for the system with some games, to a hundred dollars or more, depending on the system, and how many games the person has to sell with them. you can also try to find some at pawn shops. some of those old systems also had alot of extra things you could purchase seperately. like the duck hunt gun for NES, Nes also had a glove controller, allowing you to control your man with your hand rather than a paddle, and there are those dance step mat thingies as well. NES was the most successful home arcade system in its day, and had the most extra features, which you can still find online sometimes, though they can be pricey sometimes because they are collectors items but hey you can tell him, i got ya the system if you want the added extra things do some housework and save your allowance. he can do his own hunting for them and learn how to make online purchases and go to yardsales etc

I've played a variety of different systems, and my personal favourites were my original Nintendo NES, and also sega genesis.they are probably the easiest ones to find these days as well, and had the most games which you can still find. one thing to beware of however, is that these old games are not on cd's like today, but old style cartridges that look kind of like an old 8track thing. and they can get dusty inside the game cartridge. if its dusty, it wont work right in the machine. you can sometimes fix this by blowing and blowing and blowing into the cartridge to get the dust out. you can also try those air can duster things you buy at walmart. the machines themselves can get dusty as well, and if it is, it wont load the game. i used to have to open the door of the machine and blow into it until my lungs fell out. but that usually did fix the problem. you can also use those air cans in the machine too. so if you purchase an old system like NES or any of those, make sure its not dirty and dusty, and i would ask the seller to plug in the machine and load a game up for you to see, to verify it works. .

How to not be seen riding a bike to school? How to keep it from getting stolen?

Degrassi

Im a sophomore in highschool and i don't really think it's cool to be biking to school.I don't want my bike to be stolen though

Answer
Sarcastic answer: "How to not be seen riding a bike to school?" Walk or take the school bus. "How to keep it from getting stolen?" Leave it at home in your room.

Real answer: What's to be ashamed of? Are all the other kids being dropped off at school by their Mommy driving a BMW or Mercedes Benz? I doubt it. The numbers of people commuting by bicycle is up - WAY up over the last few years. It only makes sense for short trips with unstable gas prices.

Security: Get a good U-Bolt lock and thick cable or chain from one of two companies...either Kryptonite or OnGuard. Links below. The more you spend - the better the lock. However - given enough quiet time & the right tools, no lock is absolutely theft proof. But these two companies have a theft guarantee & will reimburse you for the cost of the bike. Read the theft guarantee carefully.

How to increase the power in a lawn mower engine?

Right now I have a craftsman flathead engine making 5.5 hp.

I'd like to put it in a go cart or mini bike sometime, so more power would be more fun.

Any tips?

Answer
Get rid of those crappy mufflers and get a tuned exhaust from a 4-cycle small motorcycle engine (125-175 cc).

Put an extension on the air cleaner and grab air from a place away from the engine.Use low restriction air cleaner. Engine vicinity air is to hot, and hot air doesn't have as much oxygen in it as colder air. Ideally you could run your air thru a box with ice cubes in it so the air enters your engine as cold and dense as possible.

If you have access to a welder and grinder and drill press you can make an induction manifold for your carburetor. The longer the tubes between your carb and your intake valve the more time the gas has to completely vaporize and burn stronger. In an engine you want top heat production to make more power.

Use synthetic 50W oil and wrap a little insulation around the cooling fins. Since the lawnmower engine is made to run at walking speeds it has excess cooling fins to handle the heat of burning gas. Since your go cart moves, it doesn't need as much cooling. This is a trade off though. You want to keep your engine as hot as possible but not so hot you melt the valves or cylinder dome. So you got to experiment. Put a little insulation on engine..if's its ok with that, keep adding more until it smokes to much or power goes down (from oil not staying on cylinder walls)

Get a spark plug with multiple electrodes on the tip.

And most importantly and this is not the engine.. get a variable speed transmission (torque converter) and not a friction clutch. This transmission will make sure your engine is getting the optimum torque output no matter your speed. It's like having a hundred gear transmission.

Try to copy the design of a 125 cc four cycle motorcycle engine. These engines are smaller in cc's than a lawnmower engine but get about 15 hp out of them. Lawnmower engines are built for longevity and dirt and cheapness and heat. So they limit the horsepower on purpose so the engine lasts longer.

In all honesty you would be a lightyear ahead by just grabbing a used motorcycle engine and transmission and sprockets, chains and controls out of a wrecked bike rather than trying to use a lawnmower engine.

You could spend a 100 hr of labor and several hundred dollars trying to make your 5.5 hp engine put out 15 hp and Yamaha and Honda do this all day long. Don't reinvent the wheel and start with a proven engine and transmission. When I was a kid I tried those lawnmower engined mini-bikes and go-karts...they always disappoint. The clutches wear out quick and the motors arent designed for the high loads you put on them, so they break quick

How can a 13 yr old kid make 600$ in 2 months?

Brandon

I really want to get my first mini bike. Obviously my parents can't buy it for me because it's too much money to spend on me. So I have been trying to save up money. Except it's just not going as quickly as I thought. I do have chores that I do. I get about 15$ each week. Except it's not enough to get 600$ in 1 or 2 months. I know the goal of 600$ in 1 month is a little extreme, but I will be getting out of school soon, so the fster I can get the bike the better. I also have a really busy schedule so it will be hard to make time for work. So can you please give me a few suggestions on how I could make 600$ in 2 months? It would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I have started to sell some stuff on craigs list (it won't get me anywhere near 600$) and as of right now I have about 100$.
So yeah, thanks.

Answer
You can't. Sorry!

How to get spray paint off a bicycle?

My two nieces birthday. Was a while back (their birthday is like a week apart so we celebrate it on the day) and they both got brand new bikes. Well they got stolen recently and the kids who live down the street form them suddenly has bike that look like theirs, but spray painted, so i took them.

They're both at my apartment. Now it could just be a coincidence. There's only one way to find out i need to get the spray paint off.

Don't worry if the bikes aren't pink under the paint i'll put them back. But they have the exact same pegs as my nieces bikes. So if they are my nieces bikes i'll clean them off and give them back to my nieces. If tried soap and water and it didn't work.

What can i buy to get the spray paint off?

Answer
You must let the police recover the bikes or you could be committing a crime. If those are not the right bikes what will you do then? Spray paint them? You can use mineral spirits to remove the paint without damaging the original.

I want a cheap bicycle to get around Buenos Aires. About how much could I expect to pay?

Wilson Man

I'll be living somewhere in the Belgrano/Palermo area. First of all, actually, if I were to get a bicycle, would that be a safe option for getting around or is street traffic too dangerous for cyclists? And second, how much would it cost to buy a cheap bike, not necessarily brand new. Would it be possible to get one for under $50 USD?

Answer
Forget the bike!

Probably will end up costing a lot, difficult for storage at your Palermo/Belgrano apartment!

Plus, as said here before, you will end up below a bus in NO time. And I am NOT kidding!

BUT, the plus is Buenos Aires and of course both in Palermo and Belgrano is that you have, several very in-expensive and (quite) reliable public means of transportation.

1* Sub-way (and I do not mean the sandwich!)
2* Buses
3* Taxis
4* Trains (even from Belgrano, that will take you down-town in a jiffy for less than a ARG1.00!!!)
5* Remises (private company taxis)
