How do you ride a bike without training wheels?

Linda

I am nine and I can't ride my bike without training wheels! I have not rode it in years.I really want to ride it because I don't have any training wheels and I got a brand new bike that is my favorite color. I didn't want to until I went to the park and saw my friend and I was chasing her while she rode a bike without the spare wheels. Now I really want to! I will try her way tomorrow after I get to my house, but if I can't hang on to her way i'm taking my scooter to the park. If her way doesn't work, best answer deserves a lot of credit.

Answer
Well first of all, training wheels are for little kids. I doubt they even make them in a size you would need.

But actually training wheels are obsolete. The new way to teach a kid to ride a bike is what's called a 'gravity bike' (and I have NO idea why it's called that. It makes no sense to me. But that's what they call it.) What you do is take the pedals off a bike. You lower the seat so you can put both feet flat on the ground. Then you push the bike along with your feet. They make bikes for little kids that don't have cranks or chains or anything, just two wheels and adjustable seat height.

You push the bike along with your feet and learn to balance and steer. After not too long you could coast down a mild hill with your feet off the ground, you can steer by leaning without putting your feet down. Then you're ready for a real bike with pedals.

Training wheels will get you pedaling and all that, but you're not really learning to ride a bike, which has to do with balancing and steering. It's something nobody can teach you, you just get a feel for it.

The 'gravity bike' idea has resulted in kids learning to ride at a much younger age. In my day we all learned around 5 or 6 but these days I see three year olds on bikes! Which I think is great! I've never heard of a nine year old learning that way, but why not? A person your age actually has better balance than a five year old, so it should be even easier.

Riding a bike is a lot of fun! I do it almost every day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Get a helmet, though, and expect to fall two or three times before you get good at it. It's all part of learning.

How do i ride a 2 wheel bike?

Denis

I want to know how i can ride a 2 wheel bike. I have no idea how to ride a 2 wheel bike and people are teasing me that i can't ride a 2 wheel bike so i want to learn/know how to ride a 2 wheel bike. Any tips/ideas/what i can do?

Answer
Here's a tip.. You might want to ask your parents to get you a rollerblading safety gear package, which includes kneepads, elbow pads, gloves with palm and wrist guards, and a helmet.

Wearing this gear will prevent the common "ouchies" when learning how to ride a bike-- It will save you from painful injuries such as skinned knees, scratched and bruised palms and wrists and other such scrapes that has discouraged so many kids. That way you won't be so afraid of losing your balance and falling, and have the courage to get up and try again.

After a couple of tries, keeping your balance on a bike will become second nature, like you knew how to do it all along. Once you learned how, you can stop wearing the pads, but you should keep wearing the helmet.

Good luck!

Leon

I get an allowance of $4.50 a week but no money for chores. I would like to have earned $200 by the end of spring 2013.

Answer
1) Sell your used video games, old cell phones, cameras, etc on Craigs List. These items are hot sellers

2) Offer your neighbors, family members, etc to do some holiday baking, shopping, or wrapping presents. Everyone is busy this time of year and is willing to pay for a little help

3) If youâre good at programming, make a quick mobile shopping app on popular presents, prices, and where to buy

4) Shovel, shovel, shovel!

5) Party planning or decorating Offer to have a kids cookie baking & decorating party. Parents can get some shopping done and know that their kids are having fun. Charge $15-$20 per kid. If you have a group of 6, thatâs $120!!So hereâs 7 top paying Jobs for 13 year olds:

6) Tutor: Are you good at math? Science? Or any subject for that matter? Parents are willing to pay $15 dollars an hour or more to tutor their kids.

7) Newspaper guy/gal: You can make as much as $1,000 a month delivering local newspapers. You can walk, bike, or have your mom drive you. But the downfall is you have to get up at 5 am.

3) Window Washer: Most people hate washing windows. You can easily make $100 per house washing windows. And all you need is a bucket, sponge/squeeze-e, and a little vinegar to make them sparkle and shine!

8) Odd painting jobs: Look for houses with white picket fences that need a paint job and knock on the door. Make sure youâre with a parent or friend thoughâ¦and not alone.

9) Brush clearing: My mother-in-law pays my son $20 bucks an hour to clear brush every spring and fall.

10) Bookkeeper: This is not only a great way to earn extra money, but an invaluable and useful skill to learn. Plus, it pays well! Talk to local small businesses.

11) Clean Out the Attic or Basement

12) Babysit

13) Yard-work

14) Car Wash

15) Set up a lemonade stand

16) Sell homemade items
17) Walk dogs

18)Mow lawns

How to get my cat certified to be a therapy cat?

Hanna

I have a 12 week old kitten that I think would be the perfect therapy cat. I'd like to know exactly how to get him certified when he gets older and what to do to get him ready. I've been working on getting him to jump on beds and chairs on command. I've also taken him on MANY car rides, bike rides, I'm trying to get him used to dogs, he's been around little kids, many other cats, been brought to many different houses and met tons of different people, he's been brought to the nursing home where my grandma is many times, he's also used to cats hissing and growling at him, he doesn't even react. He likes being pet everywhere, paws, tummy, everything. He's SUPER tolerant. I mess with him while he's eating, while he's playing, sleeping, etc. He lets me pull on his paws and tail no problem. He LOVES attention and will just jump in your lap and cuddle. I honestly think he'd be perfect for a therapy kitty. Just don't know where to start! Any bit of info helps! Thanks!(:

Answer
The three most important things you didn't mention:

1. The cat has to have a bath before every therapy visit. So get the cat used to having a bath, being dried, and brushed.

2. The cat has to have it's nailed trimmed before each visit so get the cat used to having nails trimmed and trim them with the correct equipment.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YLDQMvskH8 - video instructions

3. It would be helpful if you trained your cat to walk on a lead. Use the correct equipment as shown in the video. This can be a long process so be patient.

If you are training your cat to jump on things, why don't you clicker train your cat?

As for the therapy certification, there are links in the two articles where you apply for that:

I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old boy who are interested in dirt biking. What age would it be appropriate for them to start? I think they are a little young, my husband disagrees. What age did your kids start?

Answer
I think thats great that they want to start, there really is no age limit, you just have to go to a local dirt bike retailer and check some bikes out because they come in a bunch of sizes, i've been riding since i was 2 so i know what I'm talking about, its just takes practice. just make sure you teacher your kids and they should be fine.

How do you deal with the terror and fear when your child is injured?

fantamusue

My 6 year old caught her foot in my exercise bike while playing on it. A knot as big as an egg appeared, all blue/black. Her first real injury of her life. I kept my cool and was calm but man I was shaking with worry. What an awful feeling seeing your child hurt. The worst thing I have ever felt in my life was the death of my friends 7 year old, my kids best friend. It was from sudden swelling of the brain, a seizure. She didn't suffer. Knowing how my heart hurt, I can't imagine her mothers' pain. How do you cope with things like this?

Answer
YOU JUST HAVE TO REMEMBER THIS ISN'T THE WORST OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE YEARS TO COME. I HAVE 3. MY KIDS HAVE HAD CUTS BRUISES TEETH KNOCKED OUT IN SPORTS AND MY OLDEST IS ONLY 7 THEN MY SON WILL TURN 4 THIS WEEK AND MY YOUNGEST IS JUST 2. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME YOU SHOULD ALWAYS REMEMBER ONE THING AS LONG AS THEY ARE OK A LITTLE PAIN AND BRUISING WILL GO AWAY IN TIME. MY HARDEST THING HASN'T BEEN PHYSICAL IT'S THE EMOTIONAL MY 7 YR OLD HAD A KNIFE PULLED ON HER AT SCHOOL. AND THEY SUSPENEDED THE BOYS YES MORE THAN 1 WITH A KNIFE SHE WENT BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER SPRING BREAK HER TEACHER HAD THE NERVE TO SET THE BOYS NEXT TO HER IN CLASS. SHE IS AFRAID TO EAT ANYTHING WITH A KNIFE BECAUSE IT SENDS HER BACK TO THAT DAY. PHYSICAL UNJURIES WILL HEAL JUST COMFORT THEM AND ALWAYS REMEMBER IT COULD BE WORSE.

What are the laws in maine for assault against a minor?

I was walking home from school today, and this kid on his bike just rode by me and punched me in the face for no reason. He rode back to his friends behind me and then proceeded to ride by and hit me in the face again. What are the laws against this? Thanks in advance.
I guess I wasn't really clear. I'm wondering if it's any different for minors. I know he's already on probation so would that make a difference?

Answer
It would be covered under "Maine G.S. 459. Assault."

§459. Assault
1. Prohibition; assault. Any person subject to this Code who attempts or offers with unlawful force or violence to do bodily harm to another person, whether or not the attempt or offer is consummated, is guilty of assault.

Therefore, the next time it happens, call the police. Let them deal with the offender.

What do you do when a kid is addicted to video games?

What if he never leaves the house & is "afraid" of the sun because he's never gone outside?

My 7 year old son is curious if other kids have this problem and wants to know what other parents would do! Thanks!
BTW: My son is asking about a friend of his... not him. We have a Wii that just SITS there off all but one or two hours a week! =)

Answer
That's really sad. It's sad but it's true, children are victims of society, gaining a lot of weight, and the most disappointing observation I've made is most can NOT solve problems without the aid of an adult or a computer. You may not think of this as an answer, but more like an ode to simpler time that really wasn't very long ago.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and drank kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because we were always outside playing. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were okay.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We didn't have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, not even a Gameboy. No 150 channels on cable, no cel phones, internet, DVD's, MP3's, or PC's. We had FRIENDS and we went outside and found them, even on rainy days where the worst part would be getting a soaker.

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with the disappointment. Imagine that.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law.

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 20 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If you are one of us . . . congratulations.

Share this with your kids so they will know how brave, and lucky, their parents were.

things to do in Los Angeles for a family on a budget?

It's spring break and my family and I are trying to think of things do. We are on a budget so things like Six Flags aren't going to work. We already planned to go to the griffith observatory and venice beach. Any other suggestions?

Answer
Yeah, you really shouldn't pay attention to anything I write, being TOP United States answerer and all...

There are literally hundreds of things to do here in LA. Here is a list of cheap and free stuff:

Universal City Walk is a fun place to hang out in the afternoon or evening. Bring a change of clothes for the kids, so they can play in the fountain.

Hollywood: Hollywood Boulevard is ready for its close-up, thanks to years of urban renewal and renovation. Enjoy the Walk of Fame, Entertainment Museum, Chinese Theatre and more. You can see a lot for free. The Hollywood & Highland complex has lots of shops and restaurants, and the Kodak Theater (home of the Academy Awards). I also like the El Capitan theater, because it has been restored to its former glory.

Rodeo Drive, 90210: Packed with exclusive shops, full of gawkers. They all came to enjoy the excess. Free, unless you intend to buy something.

Venice Beach: Los Angeles kitsch and over-the-top culture at its best. Here you'll find Muscle Beach, street performers and tacky shops galore. Fun, VERY interesting, but I avoid it after dark, when it gets a little TOO interesting for my taste. And it's a short bike ride from Santa Monica Pier.

Santa Monica Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. (The Sting and "Three's Company" come immediately to mind). After visiting the pier, you can ride a bike south a couple miles to Venice Beach.

Santa Monica Third Street Promenade - Downtown Santa Monica's shopping promenade is often the scene of movie star-sightings. Just a short walk from the Santa Monica Pier.

Sunset Boulevard: Perhaps one of the world's most famous streets, it began as a route between the stars' posh neighborhoods and the Hollywood studios. It runs from downtown to the ocean, passing through the "Sunset Strip" on its way. It makes for a fun drive. Along the way, you see a lot of different neighborhoods: Hollywood, West Hollywood, Bel Air, and Pacific Palisades. When you get to the ocean, stop at Gladstone's for Fish.

Queen Mary: Once the largest ship afloat, she's been docked in Long Beach for longer than she sailed, and her elegance never fails to impress. Free to visit. You can actually stay on board, for a price.

Farmers Market and The Grove - A new shopping complex right next to a Los Angeles landmark, The Grove and Farmers Market coexist. Enjoy a movie or shopping, and then take the trolley to the Farmers Market for lunch or dinner. It is right next to CBS, so walk across the lot to see if they are taping "The Price is Right". You might even get in.

Griffith Park - Home of the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, Travel Town, the Greek Theatre, and Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage.

Getty Museum - The Getty's architecture is so beautiful that it keeps me fascinated. No matter whether you like their art or architecture better (or maybe you'll just enjoy the view), the Getty is sure to please. Free.

Attend a TV taping - You can get free tickets at audiencesunlimited.com, tvtix.com, or see the booth at Universal City walk. It's very interesting to see a show being taped. The most popular, by far, is the Tonight show with Jay Leno. Check the NBC web site for all the details there.

Places to eat:
In-N-Out Burger: Multiple locations, best burger in LA, ask anyone.
Pinkâs Hot Dogs: 709 N. La Brea, just north of Melrose. You might even see a celebrity. Maybe.
Tommyâs Chili Burgers: Look for the shack, an LA tradition. The original location is at Beverly & Rampart, a couple miles west of downtown.
Canterâs Deli: 419 N. Fairfax, between Beverly & Melrose. Near CBS, you might spot a celebrity.
Phillippeâs: 1001 N. Alameda. Great roast beef sandwiches. Near Union Station and Olvera Street. Watch the mustard, itâs hot.
The Pantry: Corner of Figueroa and 9th, downtown. Huge portions, they never close, (I NEVER eat there after dark), GREAT steak and eggs.

West of Encino, what do you ever do besides post sarcastic answers and racist remarks? Hmm?

Anaheim Vacation- what to do, where to shop/eat?

colorstrip

We're planning to go to Anaheim this Christmas with the family (kids 13 and 18) What are some great shopping areas (malls) preferably offering good deals? Are there any nearby beaches? Also, I was looking up tours of LA offered from Anaheim ( as I thought it would be better than driving through the traffic personally) what agencies or tours are well known?

In Anaheim, what are some affordable places to eat at? ( I wouldn't mind chain restaurants or even local restaurants) as long as their good and preferably offer a good selection of vegetarian items.

Answer
There are literally hundreds of things to do here in LA. Here is my list of âmust seesâ. Visit as many as you have time for.:

Disneyland: The Happiest Place on Earth. Half a billion visitors canât be wrong. #1 Destination.
Universal Studios: A theme park that grew out of a studio tour. #2 Destination.
Even if you donât visit Disneyland or Universal Studios Tour, Downtown Disney District and Universal City Walk are very fun places to visit for shopping and eating. And theyâre free to visit.

Hollywood: Enjoy the Walk of Fame, Entertainment Museum, Chinese Theatre and more. You can see a lot for free. The Hollywood & Highland complex has lots of shops and restaurants, and the Kodak Theater. The El Capitan theater, right across the street, is where Disney shows their movies. And the Hollywood Bowl is a GREAT place to listen to concerts outdoors.

Olvera Street/Union Station: Olvera Street is the birthplace of LA, and it emphasizes our Mexican heritage. In addition to the Avila Adobe (oldest building in LA), you can eat at some pretty good Mexican Restaurants, do a little shopping, and taste a churro. If you donât want to go to Tijuana, this is as close as it gets without going there. Union Station has great architecture from a bygone age. Also, you are 2 blocks from Phillippeâs (see below).

Santa Monica: Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. After visiting the pier, you can ride a bike south a couple miles to Venice Beach.

Newport/Huntington: Since you're in Anaheim, the closest beaches would be Newport and Huntington. Both are excellent. Just take I-5 south to the 55 south, and follow Newport Blvd south to PCH. Turn right at PCH, and you can go to Huntington. Newport is right there.

In Anaheim, the restaurants in Downtown Disney District are very good. There's also a Claim Jumper nearby in Buena Park or one in Brea. Email me or IM me if you need any more info

Sunset Boulevard began as a route between the stars' posh neighborhoods and the Hollywood studios. It runs from downtown to the ocean, passing through the "Sunset Strip" on its way.

Titoâs Tacoâs: Voted best tacos in LA, even though itâs in Culver City.
The Pantry: Corner of Figueroa and 9th, downtown. Huge portions, they never close, GREAT steak and eggs.

In Anaheim, I recommend the Howard Johnson (HoJo) Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn.

What is the best bike trailer for me?

best kids bike trailer image

Rocka

I have a 2yr old, and a 10 month old. I need a cart that is light weight, folds easy and is easy to clean. I live on the second floor which means that I have to completely take apart my whole set-up each time I ride. Ease of use is huge, and I intend on upgrading the inner tubes to the ones that are already filled with Green Goob and guaranteed not to go flat. If you have two kids and you like to ride, I would like to hear what brand and model of cart you have. What do you NOT like about your cart? Also, what do you LOVE about your cart? What is the function that you do not want to go without?
I am hoping that I will be able to get a bike trailer in the next couple of weeks and I would really like to get the one that will work best for me. Also, if you have any pointers I would love for you to pass them along too.
Thank you for your time, I look forward to your great ideas and comments.
I would like to know if anyone out there has seen a trailer that holds two kids, but instead of having them side by side, they are one in front of each other.

Answer
Chariot Carriers seem to be the industry leader. Lots of different models to choose from as well. Visit the website, then find a dealer who will demonstrate how fast they assemble/disassemble, how safe they are and the different options you can get with them. Might just replace your current stroller.

Is there an infant seat system for bike trailers?

Arwen

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
Most bike systems are designed for babies 9 months and over. It's an issue of being able to hold their heads up enough to prevent the sort of jostling that biking creates. Even a carseat in a bike trailer, isn't secure enough to hold them steady, especially not in the case of a spill or accident. I also wanted something for our five month old to use with our bikes in the spring, but no such luck. Now she's 16 months, and we've gotten her a bike seat.

I think maybe just buy them a bike trailer and let them decide what they are going to do to. It might've been a risk you and your husband were willing to take, but each parent should decide for themselves.

Good luck!

What kid of bike is good for an adult beginner?

I never learned how to ride a two wheeler as a kid just a tricycle.

I've tried the Giant Suede and the Schwinn Town and Country Trike and was looking at the Townie. $500 is about my price range.
By tried I mean I hopped on and sat on it while the saleswoman held the front wheel. The trike I was able to get on an d go obviously =D

Answer
You will have to judge if a three wheeler will meet you needs.

I will tell you how to learn to ride a two wheeler. Buy a low cost Dahon folding bike and get a bike helmet. Drop the seat way down so you can stand up while sitting on the seat. Wear your helmet and long pants. Go to a local park during quiet hours when no one is there. Drop the seat on the Dahon so low that it can be used as a scooter with both of your feet flat on the ground. With helmet on and riding in the soft grass in the park walk around with your weight on the seat and getting the hang of the steering. Don't use the pedals at all and in fact they can even be removed from the bike. When you get too far leaned to one side use the leg on that side to right yourself and start again. This will take most adults about 1-2 weeks of visits to the park to get the hang of it. After a while you will be able to coast and hold your legs off the ground for several seconds before the bike loses speed and leans over. At that point you can try to actually start pedaling.

How much should it cost to replace a bike tire?

Q. Before I call the local bike shop to get ripped off, I am curious to know how much others have paid to fix a little boys bike? Tire is flat and I can't get it off the bike. It's style with big trick rods in the middle of rear wheel. My son loves his bike but if I'm gonna spend more than $60 then I'd rather get a new one.
Oops, I meant the inner tube needs to be replaced. Bike Doctor won't work on his tires.

Answer
$10 to $15 dollars labor, plus price of tube (about $6) most shops make their livings with repeat customers, and will not try and rip you off. if the mechanic says the tire needs to be replaced because of a large gash, worn out tread, or cracking due to dryness, ask him to show you. new tires for that kind of bike usually start at around $12. he or she may be trying to make more money, but they also have the safety of your kid in mind as well. believe me, people in bike shops are not getting rich!

and when did shipping become so expensive? i can see paying $14 for a set of ape hanger lowrider handlebars but why $20+ for standard ground shipping? when i was a kid lowrider bikes were cheap to make and cost $150 already built from the store apposed to now $250+ smh.

Answer
The price on parts for all bikes have gone up these past years and more people want to buy them for their old Muscle Bikes, Lowriders and some put them on their Antique/Vintage Balloon tire & middleweight bikes aka beach cruisers.

You should see the prices of original ones from the 1960's & 70's bikes but that is partly because people want original parts.

Wald is usually the cheapest & a real good company that has been around for a very long time that can be found at a few local bike shops.

What is the fastest way to earn $500+?

Joe Smith

Hello, I am 14 years and want a new BMX bike. My parents can't afford it right now as they just had 2 kids. The bike I want is 500-800 dollars. What can i do to make the money. Please just answer the question, I don't need your advice on life. I just want to know how to get some green.
Oh and how long do you think it would take? I just got on summer break.

Answer
I would suggest trade up: start with something small but cool or useful, like a funny pen or a colorful paper clip, and go to people's houses or independant businesses (chain stores can work too if the manager is nice, but they're usually not as good. If you try them though, ask for damaged or remaindered stock that they can't sell). Tell them you're trying to work your way up to a BMX bike and than you'd appreciate anything of slightly greater value that they could give you. when you've amassed stuff of equal value to the bike (it likely won't take as long as you think), try and either trade it for a used one or sell it on ebay to make the money you need. That might take a while longer, since you're getting mostly stuff people don't want, but it should be possible before summer's over.

If you're techsmart, you could make a website where you trade your original bike for slightly better versions until you get a BMX.

When i was a little kid and I saw the Siberian husky I fell in love with it right when I took a glance at it. Everybody whants one because of their blue eyes and their perfect coating of fur. When i get older i whant to adopt one is North ontario.

Answer
The Siberian Husky has a WONDERFUL temperament. They get along great with just about anybody. However, there are several things about the breed that many people don't realize before getting one, and they often wind up on the streets or in shelters.

1.) The Siberian Husky is a hardcore working dog. Even the show-line only dogs have a very strong working drive. The husky that does not is an exception, not the rule. They have a strong desire to run, and run, and run, and can be difficult to leash train. They are deceptively strong for their size. They cannot be trusted off leash, at all, ever unless they are in a securely fenced area. Recall training rarely works with huskies. And if you don't have a fence and wish to instead tie the dog outside for a little while each day, don't. They can snap those long cable leads with supernatural ease. Mine snapped two cable tie-outs, a thick leather collar, and two nylon leads. Not the clasps, but the cables and nylon themselves!

2.) They require an obscene amount of exercise. The siberian husky that is content to lie about the house quietly is rare. They were bred to pull light loads for upwards of 20 miles or more in a 24 hour period, and as such require a lot of exercise. If you aren't willing to take up at least a one hour long run or bike ride with this dog every single day, it is not the dog for you.

3.) They are notoriously difficult to train. The siberian husky, like most spitz breeds, is a serious working dog. An innate stubbornness, confidence, and decision-making ability is paramount to a good sled dog, and as such many huskies possess these traits. They are willful and will walk all over you if given a chance. They take advantage of any lax in leadership. Again, a husky that does not do this is more the exception, not the rule. Proper training will make an excellent companion, but consistent, firm training is a must.

4.) They are notorious escape artists. As I said, they were bred to run run run! They can dig out under the fence and they can easily scale a fence up to 6'. Some will climb a higher fence. If you intend to leave the dog outside at any time unattended then a securely fenced yard is a must. If they can get out, they will, and take off to run and snoop. More often than not they are picked up by animal control, a benevolent stranger, or are never seen by the owner again. A heavy wire buried 2-3 inches underneath the fence line will discourage digging.

5.) They are notoriously destructive. A bored dog is a destructive dog and the siberian husky has this down to an art. They often dig, chew, howl, destroy furniture, yard fixtures, drywall, you name it. Fail to exercise this dog properly and you may wind up pulling your hair out in frustration and replacing half your home.

You cannot yell at or hit a sibe, they do not respond well to negative punishment. They are likely to bite or just take off if it happens. They require at minimum one hour of intense physical exercise every day, rain or shine, without fail to be truly happy and well-adjusted. They must be socialized extensively with children and small animals as they have a very, very high prey drive. They usually see cats and even small dogs as toys or prey and will chase and kill them. Occasionally a child may also trigger the prey drive if the dog has not been properly socialized. As with all dogs, it should be supervised with children. They blow their coat twice a year--this means it falls out in large clumps twice a year, all over your house, so get a good heavy-duty vacuum. :P

Google NILIF training and research the breed thoroughly. dogbreedinfo.com has some good information on the breed.

The Siberian Husky is not an aggressive breed by nature. They can be made aggressive, but they are not inherently so. They also can be socialized with cats and do very well with them. I've known huskies who ate cats and some who don't. The ones who don't were brought up as pups around cats and kittens. My own rescue husky was a cat eater when I got him, and quickly learned what "no cats" meant. :P

They can be aloof toward strangers, or they may be very friendly and happy to greet them. There is almost no loyalty in a husky, though. They'll often times wander off with anybody who has food, a leash, or a car so they can go on another adventure. They must be watched closely for this reason. Their friendliness, ambiguous loyalties, and desire to go out on a new adventure at every waking moment is what makes them so frequently and easily stolen.

Looking for a quality bike for my beyond wonderful, eight year old niece moving up from a twenty inch bike?

Joseph G

I need advice on purchasing a quality bike for an eight year old girl. One who loves to ride. She is moving up from her twenty inch bike. Any suggestions on twenty-four inch wheel bikeshop bike that is under $180? Or on a department store/sporting goods store bike that is of the same quality as bike shop bike.Would prefer the cruiser type bike to the mountain bike type, but quality level and reliabilty are most important factors. Thanks for the help!

Answer
Excellent opportunity to buy a lightly used bike. Kids don't normally fit this size bike for more than 2 years. By the time they turn 10-11 yrs old, they will be in a 26 inch wheeled bike (unless they are short). With your budget, you will get a better bike too. A decent bike shop quality bike will be over 200US.

Regarding the first answer being too young for a 24? My boys were on very comfortably on 24" wheels at 7 yrs old. They looked like circus clowns on toy bikes when they tried to ride 20" wheeled bikes at that age (other than BMX).....but I would agree that a fitting would be in order, or at least go shopping with the kids height/proportions at hand so you know what to get.

We don't want to spend more than $500 per bike. Most of the use is city/neighborhood and paved greenways with some riverside trails. I live in Atlanta so I need gears for all the hills. My husband and I are both tall and don't want to stoop over the bike either. We're looking for comfort while out with the kids. What are the best manufacturers? Bike shops? Styles? Features? I'm a novice wanting to make the best decision possible.

Should shops/stores that put a bike together incorrectly be held accountable?

dread head

I got to thinking after answering a question on this thing. I thought if a shop shows negligence in the building of a bicycle, should the shop be held accountable if an accident happens; upon failure of the build? Let's take it a step father. Should they bike manufacturer be held accountable if their product fails causing serious injury to a person?
the bike is being used 100% properly. Department stores are notorious for doing this. I want to know more from the bike shop crowd.

Answer
Given the fact that bikes purchased from dept stores are junk anyway and should not be purchased by anyone, and if they are they should be checked out completely by a competent authority.
The larger question is WHO is defined as competent? Me, You ....the next guy in the shop down the street?
Lets assume that every independent bike shop that sells a bike checks it before that customer leaves the store with it to ensure that it is mechanically safe for the new owner. Lets also assume that it was checked by someone qualified to do so and the new owner takes it home and uses it and DOES NOT start playing with it beyond their capacity and ends up screwing something up, rides it anyway and it fails them. Now whos fault is it?
I have seen this happen with mountain bikes purchased (that I have sold to teenagers) and they take them home and figure the fork isnt enough for them and they start removing the caps that arent supposed to be turned on a lower end fork and oil goes all over mom and dads new white carpet and the spring shoots out and goes thru a wall. Mom and dad come in and start bitching at US because WE failed to tell that kid not to mess with his new bike without consulting us and now they want to sue us....All kinds of scenarios out there and for those shops who dot their I's and cross their T's there is still only so much that you can do with quality control in the store and once that product has left the store you have no idea of what is going on with that product and what that customer will come up with....
I have seen a customer return a bike demanding their money back because the day after they purchased a bike they had a flat tire.....!
There are checks and balances in every shop of some kind and the paperwork trail is essential to pinning down the build of a bike and who preformed this task to who finaled the bike when it was purchased to the inspection of the bike out of the box and the paperwork that must be done during the sale to prevent that ever looming lawsuit that may get incurred after that bike leaves the store.

It can never be assumed that the end user will use that product 100% properly but it would be nice to think that is the case. Since I have been in retail, my expectations and perceptions of the public as a whole has taken a nosedive in the last 3 years.

There is a reason that we have lawyers and courts and unfortunately we cant always do enough to prevent the idiots from buying a bike or always catch the inept bike builder before its too late. In my store we make sure that at least 3 people (one manager+builder and one experienced sales person) inspect each and every bike before it goes to the floor and that all paperwork up to that point is 100% complete.
we are routinely updated with product recalls (if any) and faulty products affecting safety of the rider and only one comes to mind recently on a Dahon folding bike of which two out of 5 we had on the floor were affected and we had those 2 off the floor before the store opened that morning. Problem averted!

Sales associates all have their own routine but the final bit of paperwork before the sale goes out the door is the same for everyone and there is always the human factor in play. We are all vunerable to make mistakes in any given day...all of us. We do the best that we are capable of and everyone has a bad day too, you just hope it wasnt mine on the day you came in to buy your bike. The customer should be a smart shopper and informed but most are not and impulse buying is routine as I observe maybe 1/10 customers actually take the time to be informed and have common sense to ask the right questions and actually have a clue as to what they want and know what they are looking at and that is not the customer I worry about. And i have scratched my head with quite a few!
Personally I think all dept store bikes be banned for sale in this country anyway, but I know that will never happen unfortunately.

What are some activities to do while babysitting a 9 year old boy?

best bikes 9 year old kids image

hello

Hi. I am babysitting a 9 year old boy twice a week this summer, I did it last year too, but I get soooo bored, and so does he because we run out of things to do. I babysit for 10 hours and most of the time he plays video games or watches cartoons, but I want him to have more physical activities and maybe some arts and craft things that we can do together that we both will enjoy. I am hoping I can have at least one new creative activity that we can do each day and he will really like it, and the parents will be impressed too. So if you have any ideas of fun creative activities or arts and crafts game for a nine year old boy (who loves the Steelers, superheroes, drawing and his 2 dogs), I would greatly appreciate it! Oh...and he has a pool and a pretty big backyard, but his driveway is very small, which means hard to ride bikes. Any help would be GREAT!! Thank you! :)

Answer
i taught school age kids at a child care center... my class liked carving soap... you get a white bar of soap from the store, and a plastic butter knife... carve away... if ya mess up, and a drop or 2 of water and mold it back together... and voila you have a neat sculpture that smells nice too! dragons, animals, totempoles, and cars were popular for our boys

I bought a standard chain at the store for my friends kids barbie bike. It seems to fit fine on the rear sprocket but the fron sprocket won't accept the spacing of the chain. Is there a different spacing for chains?

Answer
Yes, there are different chains available. There are generally speaking 2 pitches:
3/32 for dérailleur equipped bikes
1/8 for single speed and internal geared bikes like old 3 speeds
So unfortunately, there is no single common chain with bikes. Check out the links below for more.

What size storage shed should I buy?

I rent a home with no basement or garage. I decided that I should invest in a storage shed. I need to store 3 kids bike, lawnmower and some medium size containers (about 6, approx. 5x5), and some gardening tools. What is the smallest size that would work?

Answer
If it is okay with your landlord, and considering that you can take the shed with you when you move, I'd go for the largest that you can get -- if you have the space for it.

The cost is not much higher for the larger ones. Check prices, and determine the largest shed you can get for the least amount of money per square foot.

Please know, your city/county may have ordinances regarding shed size.

Where I live, you can have a 10/10 foot shed with no variance required. Larger than that, your're supposed to apply for a variance...but no one does!

Go larger rather than smaller. Stuff expands to fill the space!

How much should I charge for a 3 - 4 year old kids bike?

Paige B

I just bought a bike for my 12 and 13 year old. I have one bike I'm going to sell, but I don't know how much to charge them. Also I just bought a new camera and now running low on some cash. I need to buy a new set of golf clubs for my 12 year old too.

Answer
It would depend a lot on how much you spent. If it was an inexpensive bike, possibly bought at a department store, you might be better off donating it to good will or to the Yellow Bike Project and taking it off on your income tax. A bike that old will not bring much in return. If it was more of a high-end bike, you may get something for it, but again things have changed so much in that time, probably not very much.

If it is a high-end bike, you might go by a local bike shop and ask them.

If you really want a price, I would guess you could not get ore than $10 or $15. You might get a bit more if it is in good condition.

Yul

He's reasonably tall. I thought I might try to get a good 2nd-hand one on eBay. Any thoughts on that?

Answer
The best way is to get measured up at a bike shop, alternatively you can take a measurement yourself:

http://www.bicycledoctor.co.uk/faq_framesize.html

The measurements don't have to be exact but there should be "crotch clearance" when he stands over the frame of the bike. When you have bought a bicycle spend some time setting up the seat and handlebars to the best position, it makes the difference between a comfortable bike and an uncomfortable bike.

Ebay is not the best place to buy bicycles unless you can see the bike up-close before you commit to buy; I wouldn't say it's a bad way to buy a bike, because there are some bargains on Ebay, but the cheapest and best bikes are more often sold through the free-ads and classifieds - you can also try MTB forums.

Be warned real MTB's are NOT cheap! You'll see a lot of mountain bikes sold brand new for under $100 that look very pretty but fall apart a week later - avoid them like the plague. Real mountain bikes start in the four-figure price range.

Look for secondhand hard-tail MTB's (front suspension but no rear suspension), kids grow fast so there are lots of them for sale going cheap.
Prices vary a lot but you could buy a good one anywhere between $50 and $500 - I swear some people throw bikes away for want of a new inner-tube so keep your eyes open!

Can I use a cannondale v500 as a road bike?

linux love

i have a cannondale v500 bike. it is a mountain bike (it has mountain wheels and tires on it) i would like use it as a road bike. that means putting road wheels and tires on it? can that be done?

Answer
While you can't put road wheels on it, you can do what many other have done. Putting a set of narrow 26" high pressure slick road tires. That is a simple and economical way to give your bike a big boost in speed for the road.

Your bike will never be as efficient as a road bike but a couple guys in my club do this and can stay in the pack on rides. If you will still ride off road it's best to get a nice light set of MTB wheels so you can switch out wheels quickly. I do this for tooling around town, riding with the kids etc. even though I have a road bike too.

How should I train for the Iron Kids triathlon?

I will be competing in the Hy-Vee Iron Kids triathlon on August 14. For my age division, I need to swim 300 yards, bike 8 miles, and run 2 miles. I would like to start training next week. How far or how long should I swim, bike, and/or run each day? And, how much distance/time should I add to each workout every week? I won't be able to practice swimming until July 15. I can bike and run daily, either indoors (on an elliptical or stationary bike) or outdoors.
Also, what foods should I avoid and which ones should I try to eat more of?

Do you think a child of 8 can be in too many activities?

Sunny

My friend has signed her daughter up for hockey, dirt biking, softball ect... I appreciate that she wants her daughter to be active. She thinks this will keep her daughter out of trouble in the future. I just wonder sometimes if her daughter is over doing activities. At age 8 they have homework ect... I think sometimes a child might be over stimulated by so much activity. Her daughter feels she always has to be doing something, even when she's not doing her activities that I listed. What do you think?

Answer
Well I think a child or adult at any age can get overwhelmed and involved in too much. We live in a society where parents think that if their kids aren't involved they won't have good socialization skills or learn teamwork or sportmanship- etc. This is a bunch of bunk.

I don't believe in having more than one major thing going on at one time. Let them pick something they are interested in and put all their heart and soul into that one thing.

It certainly is not gonna make them more diverse because they are involved in more or make them a better child or keep them out of trouble.

Children that are rushed and are involved in too many things tend to not know how to settle down and be quiet and enjoy life as it comes. They feel like they have to always be doing something. Can you say STRESS!! Yes our kids feel stress too.

Answer
http://www.btosports.com/
http://mxsouth.com/

I have dealt with both these companies and they are helpful and the goods do come unlike a few other companies that sell online that seem to take forever to send the stuff.

Just make sure you have tried the particular brands on somewhere like a shop so you know just what size you take and also that youth pants won't have the waist that the womens pants have.

Can anyone tell me the best place to get a youths dirt bike helmet?

Mrs E

Can I get one for like $50.00 or am I going to have to spend more? (I live in Michigan if that helps)

Answer
I would not let anyone wear a helmet that only cost $50 as your head is worth more than that.

Make sure you purchase new so you know the helmet has not had an impact and make sure you try them on and are helped by a salesman who knows how to fit helmets. It is one of the most important items that you have to purchase so don't scimp on it as your life is worth more than that.

My son has a rack of used helmets and only a few of them look damaged. But they have all had a major impact so are no longer used by him. It costs us a fortune but his head is worth it.
