I just started a nanny job and this 3 year old girl is the most active girl ever and i don't want to put her in front of the tv all the time so aside for the obvious beach, bubbles, sprinkler, park what creative activities could I do with her out side? I am also watching he 10 mo old brother so it cant be anything where she needs my COMPLETE attention!

Answer
By all means, keep the TV off as much as possible. I'm a PT nanny, and we don't get paid to sit the kids in front of the TV. Plus, that backfires if the kid is sitting around for hours on end and their behavior goes south later on.

I nanny for a 2 1/2 year old and a 11 month old. I've been with the family since the older boy was 5 months old. I'm also a graduate student.

Playground, water play, balls and games, tricycles/bikes/scooters, sensory tables, sidewalk chalk, paint with water (can be done as a part of water play). You can also do playdough, simple cooking activities, painting, sensory activities, etc. You can also get kid friendly magnifying glasses and tweezers and go on bug/nature hunts/hikes.

For water play - fill up a small pool or an assortment of large buckets with water. Provide brushes, cups and funnels, sponges, spray bottles, watering cans, etc.

Sensory tables - uncooked beans, rice, oatmeal, or sand and other materials. Provide kid sized tweezers, cups and funnels and spoons, etc. You can also put magnetic items in it and use magnetic wands, or hide other objects and have her look for them.

Cooking activities - fruit smoothies, fruit salad, bagel pizzas, strawberry shortcake, etc. Let her feel, smell, and even taste the ingredients. Use plastic knives with supervision, and you handle the food processor/chopper or oven and other hot/sharp items.

The 10 month old can participate in many of those things as well, with supervision. You can also set some activities aside to do one-on-one while the 10 month old naps.
