My toddler refuses to pedal his bike?

erica

My son just turned 3 and I bought him a bike with training wheels. We've tried a few times to practice pedaling but he refuses. Mostly I just push him around on the bike so he can get used to steering. He's mastered the steering part but still won't try to pedal. My grandmother had knee surgery and has an excersise pedal thing (lol I don't know what it's called) and I have my son sit in a chair and pedal that way so he knows what to do. He will pedal on the excersise thing but not at all on his bike. I need help because I'm really getting frustrated and I just want him to at least TRY. It doesn't help that I'm 8 months pregnant trying to push him on this bike

Answer
Take the pedals & training wheels OFF. Have him practice pushing the bike around (especially on a slight downhill grade) and balancing. When he can coast downhill & keep his balance - he's ready to have the pedals re-installed. And he learned how to ride WITHOUT training wheels. Where can I find a toddler bike perfect for an autistic child?

Q. I am looking for a toddler bike for my 4 y/o autistic child. I am hoping to find a bike that has two important things to make teaching him easier. One that there be straps on his pedals and two that the pedals will be "fixed" so that they move while the bike is in motion. We bought him a walmart bike and he sits on it but he doesn't grasp the concept that if you push the pedals the bike will move and not just mommy and daddy doing the pushing. ;) thanks in advance.

Answer
I know that toys r us has toys for special needs kids. I dont' know if they have this particular item, but you can check with them.

Do you always do what your toddler wants to do?

Happy Momm

My 2yr old is whining to go outside. It's still early here and cold out so I don't want to go out right now...but we always go out in the afternoon. Or sometimes he wants to play Elmo games on my laptop, but I don't want him to because he's being too rough w it. My question is do you just try to keep your child happy or do you say no when you don't feel like letting them do something?
Darkangel- your reasoning sounds like since Ive let him use the laptop before he should always be able to. Not true. If he's playing nicely with it, yes, if he's being rough, no, he can't have it.

Answer
If I did, he would never wear clothes. He would always be either outside playing "awesome" (pushing a riding toy up an inclined driveway at an empty house and riding down the hill) or he would be eating cookies. My older children would constantly be wearing princess dresses and bad makeup, occasionally coming outside to ride bikes.

Being a mom means balancing everyone's needs. Don't forget to balance your own needs too! If you can't deal with going outside now, then put in a movie and forget about it.

how to teach a toddler to petal a bike?

Jenni

My daughter is almost 3 years old and has been asking for a bike. We bought her a small bike with training wheels but she doesn't have any idea how to petal. My husband is frustrated because we spent money on something she can't do but i am determined to teach her how to ride it. How do you teach a kid to petal. thats what she doesn't get
Cognitive development.. WOW, you have no clue about my daughter. She is in the 4 year old class at preschool because the 3 year olds class wasn't challenging enough for her. She is smart enough to get this, I wanted tips on how to teach her. I''ve never taught a kid how to petal and I don't know the right words to explain it. I've been teaching her all of 30 minutes and she has petaled a few times on her own. She is smart and has the cognitive development. WOW, is all i can say!

Answer
Just let her get on it and she should figure it out. Mine did, nobody taught him. Don't push her to learn it, she will in time.

Edit**
While she may do well in some areas, she won't excel everywhere, don't push her to do something she is not ready or interested in. I bet if you ask her doctor, they will tell you to just let her learn it when she is ready. The other person was not suggesting she is stupid or inept, just not ready for that skill yet.

And it is Pedal not petal- a petal is on a flower- a pedal is on a bike

what is the best way to understand poetry?

Especially if you've never really had any experience with it besides little toddler rhymes .

Answer
the best way to understand poerty is to read a-lot of it...read it out loud...let the words paint a picture for your mind to see. start with small , short, poems. read a couple doctor seuss books. then get a literature book and go for the poems. read hiku's and (a-b-a) rhymes' .
the next step after you familiarize yourself with poems and poets...try writing some of your won...start small, (roses are red..ect,) then move your way up to more complicated and intricate similies and rhymes.
you will really enjoy it if you push yourself a little, it's complicated at first, but it's like riding a bike..once you get the hang of it, you will never forget.

How do you teach your kid to pedal riding toys?

We have bought our four year old son a toddler bike with training wheels but he refuses to pedal and only makes a half-heared attempt at it.

Answer
The wheels on most bikes turn when the wheels move. Just put his feet on the pedals and then push him around. He probably doesn't like having to work it himself. But if he sees how fun it can be, he'll probably get motivated and want you to stop pushing him so he can do it himself. Try it on the driveway where it's easier to pedal.

How do I teach my toddler to ride a tricycle?

At what age do children generally learn to pedal? I have a 6 year old that never grasped the concept when he was younger, so now I really want to start early training the other two to ride a bike. My 2 year old has a tricycle and can reach the pedals, but has not been successful in making herself move. So she either wants to be pushed or uses her feet on the floor to get around.

Answer
let her use her feet to walk but keep showing her by putting her feet on the pedals and push bike. Get her around other kids riding trikes and she will figure it out. Highly recommend helmets on 2 year olds learning to ride.

I was thinking diapers but is there anything you'd prefer? He likes to put things in his mouth btw... Also if I buy him clothes what kind of clothes? Onesey, shorts..ect? Its almost summer time but its cold here in Alabama.

Answer
Babies that age love the toys that they can push around. They also love the toy version of pots and pans. Go down the aisle at the store that has the toys for babies and look at the age recommendation on the labels. They will tell you if it is recommended for babies/toddlers that are 12-18 months. Babies also love the security blankets that have a stuffed animal attached and satin binding around the edges. If you want to get something fun, there are some low to the ground scooting riding toys like tractors or four wheeled scooting bikes.

babysitting ideas for a one year old and a seven year old?

Mere

I'm babysitting a one year old boy and a seven year old boy for a few days and I want to do really fun stuff. With the seven year old we are going to watch a movie tomorrow while the baby is napping and thursday probably bake cookies and play some games. But I don't know what to do for the other four and a half hours when the one year old is awake and so is the seven year old. The one year old cant do the same stuff as the seven year old and the seven year old doesn't like one year old stuff. I need things to do with both of them. Any ideas?

Answer
Puzzles
Paint
Craft
Park
Take a walk
Bike ride( you push baby in stroller )
Legos
Trains
Make a tent
Games(baby is on your team)
Dance
Bubbles
Water balloons
Bake
Scavenger hunt(7yr old version and short 1 yr old version)

Supervise baby closely with all this and help him. Toddlers can do more then most think. So try new stuff with him and if he can't do it, at least you tried. They can surprise you and can do stuff we may think there to young for. Of course don't let it be something a 3+yr old can do. Use your judgement.
