Answer
Go for a mountain bike, MTB. Cool, tough, versatile.

Cheap? That get's a bit complicated.

Use the internet to educate yourself about MTBs. Then shop garage sales, flea markets, craigslist, whereever.

As a general rule, the most expensive bikes, tho not necessarily the best, will be at your local bike shop. There you get a lot of service before an after the sale.

Shop the box stores. Target may have the edge on Walmart for quality, a term used loosely for box store bikes. But, they are relatively cheap up front, and if you know what you're doing, might work out ok.

The internet is loaded with MTB shops. Look them over. You'll have to finish assembly and figure in shipping cost.

BMX Mongoose bikes, 1st time buyer. Help me?

Hi, so i am in the market for a bike! My 1st bike in over a long time so oviously i don't have a clue on anything anymore. When i was a kid all i cared about was if i could get on haha..

Anyways, i am 19 years old and going to be 20 soon and i am 5'8 in height. So i guess your average guy...

I am very interested in getting a Mongoose BMX bike. Not dirt bike or anything like that, just a bmx bike for tricks and transportatino of course. But well, how do i choose the right one for my age and height? I don't want to look like a complete idiot riding a kids bike and vice versa

Any advice?

Thank you very much!

Here is a pic of the ideal bike

Answer
Whats style of riding will you be doing when not riding around?

Street
Street/Park
Park/Vert
Dirt Jump/Trails
Flatland

You can do all the above mentioned on a flatland bike but you will break parts and possibly the frame.Make sure you get a bike suited for the style of riding you will be doing.

Mongoose is no longer what Mongoose once was.I believe they are another company that sold out to Pacific Cycles like GT did. They have the super crappy department store modles (Mongoose Hoop D and Rebel and such) and then they have their top of the line models that you have to get at a real bike store but even then, for the money there is much much better out there.

Take a look around at danscomp.com

Also, try and buy a bike that has a frame made from 100% 4130 chromoly or atleast one where the front triangle of the frame (head tube, toptube, downtube, and seat tube, sometimes reffered to as main frame) are made from 4130 chromoly.Hi Ten Steel sucks,it's much heavier then Chromoly and chromoly is much stronger then Hi Tensile Steel is when dealing with same thickness/diameter tubing.

Danscomp.com also does promo codes so that you can get either 20% off your orders total or free shipping.
