Bike Trailer for Kids?

my name is

My son is 14 months old and I would love to take him on bike rides. I would like to buy the bike trailer. Can you please let me know what is important when it comes to a purchase of one. Did your toddlers like the bike trailer. What brand is good? I would like to spend around $150.00. Also, do I have to get a helmet for him?

Answer
First, and most important, never ever never ever put your son into a bike trailer without a helmet.

Every time I see kids in trailers on the bike paths, they always have this look on their face: "She promised me ice cream, she promised me ice cream, she promised me ice cream..."

Trailers are mostly used for just a few years. You should be able to pick up a slightly used one for the price you've stated. I see more Burleys than most other brands.

What bikes for a couple and trailer for toddler daughter?

Raaj

We (my wife 5' 6"" and me 5' 11'') looking for bikes to go around the town and also sometimes for hiking (may be couple of times). Also we have a toddler daughter and planning to buy a trailer for her. Please advice on the model, make and also type of the bike which I should be buying. I live in Chicago area. Thanks in advance and appreciate your help.

Answer
Google " bikes shops + your zip " that will give you a map with all of the local bike shops on it. Visit the shop and tell them where and how you want to ride. Brand is not important but you want a comfort or hybrid bike with gears.
For a trailer I would look on the local ebay and Craig's list for a used one. You can pick up a nice Burly or Chariot for cheap and resell it for close to what you paid for it when you child out grows it.

bike seat or trailer for my toddler? which is safer and easier? which would he enjoy more? specific recs?

BB

I need a recommendation for my 18 month old to be able to go on bike rides with us. Is a trailer or a bike seat better? safer? more fun? what are good brands?

Answer
Personally I would go with the bike trailor. We have a bike seat and my son like to kick us in the back of the calf on the ride. Plus he's so big that there isn't much room for him and our butt back there! I would think they are more fun too, there's more to look at rather than your back and the side views lol.

what is this toddler item called?

lbear

goes on the back or front of bike to carry your toddlers as you are riding bike.
Want to buy one but i forgot what the name of it is. Also is there a certain kind that is good for a 2 1/2 year old?

Answer
It is called a child bike seat
It is a good product, but the baby wont fit in it for long and it is not very comfortable. You should try the bicycle trailer. It hooks to the rear tire of your bike and you haul your baby around. It is really good and I love it. my kid is two-and-a-half and enjoys it very much. It's also very safe, comfortable enough for him to fall asleep while we ride, and convenient (ours came with the detachable front tire so it turns from a trailer to a stroller). you can purchase it at wal-mart, target, k-mart, and other dept. stores. It is not very expensive, we found ours at Target for 40.00dlls. but they run all the way to like 200-300dlls.

what is the best way to bike with my toddler in Manila; a child seat or a trailer?

i want to bring my toddler to day care and me to work in my bike. i live in a university campus. there are a lot of cars and potholes en route. help.

Answer
Go for a bike seat my friend. Trailers tend to increase the length of the bike that can increase the chances of getting hit by something or turning. Drivers in the Philippines are quite rude by the way and you may not want to add that in factor.

I have a bell trailer, and not sure how to attatch it to my bike.

Answer
Most come with a universal hitch attachment that mounts quickly and easily to most adult bicycles, if not you need to contact the company and find out why.

If by chance the universal hitch doesn't work they also make a skewer type hitch that replaces your existing skewer. I purchased a Burley trailer and I had to use the skewer type hitch on my trike because the angles of the chain stays were wrong and to large.

How to do outdoor activities when you have kids?

I have 2 kids and they are toddlers.I miss doing trekking, hiking and rafting activities..We do not have a nearby family but are willing to have babysitters. How much do baby sitters usually cost for a whole day?

Also, any tips to still have fun in life despite kids is appreciated.

Answer
If they're toddlers, they're still little enough to strap to your backs and go for a hike. Let them walk as much as possible, and you'll be amazed at how much they'll enjoy nature and how much they'll discover. I know plenty of people who hike and camp with small children. You might not be able to go as far as you used to, and you'll have to stop more often for snacks and/or diaper changes, but you can still have a good time.

My youngest is 4, and we have recently tried kayaking/canoeing, and he loved it, so it may not be long until you can do those things, too.

And if you like biking, just get a couple of child bike seats or a child trailer, and they'll probably love to ride along.

Actually, the more you gradually introduce them to these activities when they're young, the more interested they'll be in doing them as they get older.

I want a seat for my bike for my son to ride on but I'm looking for the kind that goes in front of me. I can't find one anywhere. What is a good brand and does any one know what the weight limit is?

Thanks!

Answer
Wee rider is the only brand name that I'm aware of. They are pretty expensive though. Weight limit is 18 kg (40 lb).

There are a few no name nock offs that are cheaper you can usually find these on Ebay.

Fitting one of these will make it hard to climb. I also expect you might have to adjust your pedaling "knee" style.

They would probably be fine for short trips and you will enjoy chatting with the lad more.

My tip would be to talk louder and get a trailer. There is a heap more room for the accompanying toddler baggage and they don't effect your bikes handling anywhere near as much.

I'm not keen on the rear mount mainly because the child's view is dominated by the parents bum.

Both the "on bike" options are probably safer if you need to ride in heavy traffic.

What would be the most affordable bike to get that is safe to put a 2 year old on the back?

Hey There - we are looking to get a couple of bikes to ride around white rock lake with our 22 month old son. We are novices - so we just want something decent, but doesn't need to be the tour de france. Also - what is the best seat for the baby to get? Thanks!

Answer
You do not put a child of 22 months on a bike!!! Are you out of your mind?

OTOH your child can ride WITH you on almost any bike with age appropriate compatible equipment

The child goes on/in the equipment, the equipment attaches to the bike/bikes you choose.

Got it?

Generally speaking if/when your child is old enough to hold his/her head up WITH an infant helmet the progression is usually this:

infant to toddler - best solution is a child trailer. Your kid is sheltered, somewhat protected, sheltered from the sun, and if YOU take a tumble the trailer stays upright!! This will let you go from novice to experienced while your child is safe.

A trailer can go on almost any bike. Some will convert from trailer to jog/stroller.

Check with your local bike shop.

DO NOT BUY AT A BOX STORE. Your LBS will show you how to attach it safely and use it and what bikes will be compatible.

Toddler to lets say maybe 4-5 depending on kid. Some manner of rear mounted child seat. Who knows what will be available by the time the fruit of your loins reaches that age. Same principle, go to your LBS and have them show you how to safely attach it to your bike.

BTW in all this and at all stages GET A HELMET FOR YOUR CHILD and you too. Makes no sense for the child to survive and you to be relearning the alphabet. ;-)

5-9 or so depending on child: tag-along trailer. Like a tandem in principle attaches to your bike. Your child can pedal ... or not. But gets the feeling of participating and helps Mom/Dad move along. You know where said child is (behind you). Said child is not likely to hit me or veer all around the trail unless you do that too ;-)

9 and up plus or minus depending on your child, their interest etc now you may be talking ride with their very own bike or some equip a tandem with crankset the right length for said kid (which can be adjusted as your kid grows)

Have fun out there!!!!!!
