Bike carriers for Toddlers?

Carol G

My husband and I are thinking about getting either a trailer style or the rear seat style child carrier for my husband's bike so our 2 year old can go out with him. What are some of the pros and cons of both styles? (Don't worry, my son and husband will be BOTH be wearing helmets) Thanks.

Answer
I believe the trailer is safer, in case of crashes. If he crashes with the trailer, the kids are still enclosed within the trailer and are not very far off the ground. On a child seat mounted to the bike a kid could get quite hurt and get a lot of road rash.

We have a Burley trailer that has served us well for toting around our two kids the last few years.

Be sure to get a trailer that has a flag on it to help with visibility of the trailer.

Question about bike seat for toddler-Front carrier or Rear carrier?

martha

I'm an experienced biker but I've never used a child seat carrier. I'm a 5'6 tall, 120-pound lady...and I'm pretty athletic ...but still worried about being able to do this safely. My daughter is 19 months and weighs 23 pounds. Should I get a front carrier or rear? I don't mean the trailers..but a carrier that sits just behind my bike seat or the one that sits near the handle bars?

I like the idea of the rear carrier more but I have heard the front carriers are easier? Can anyone offer advice on this? Any recommendations on brand or helpful tips overall?

My bike is an older mountain bike.

Thank you in advance!

Answer
The front carriers are easier for you to mount the bike once your child is in the seat. Everything else is about equal. You are loading weight (of your child) on the bike without being on it. That is where care has to be taken. A kickstand will not hold the bike with the child in the carrier. You must support the bike at all times your child is in the carrier. Either by holding or riding the bike.

I always used the rear carrier, but always had help in preparation as my wife and I always rode with the children together.

As long as you are a proficient cyclist, age and style of the bike is insignificant.

Where can I find a bike helmet to fit a 15 month old?

Q. I just got a toddler carrier installed on my mountain bike but I can't find a helmet for kids as small as her.
The smallest ones they have at walmart are for three year olds.

Answer
Try this.

How do child carrier seats attach to bikes?

Q. I've never messed with a toddler carrier seat, but I may have need of it soon. I have three bikes, but the one I think best suited to a child carrier is my Global Carmel which is a nice 3 speed I'm going to call it a townie, but it really describes a proper definition.

I'm looking for one of the standard mount behind the rider setups, not a trailer to drag. That bike has lots of braze-ons that I think are meant for rear racks and some for fenders I guess that I don't use. Does anyone have recommendations or at least a solid "Yeah one should work on your goofy bike because?"

(My other two bikes are a 24" and 26" BMX so I'm leaving those out of this for now)
(defies a proper definition, doh!)

Answer
You'll need a rear rack - and a rear rack strong enough to bolt on a child's seat. Check with your local bike shop.

However...if you were to go to my local bike shop, the owner would talk you out of it. He has a good phrase for so-called "Child Safety Seats". His term is "Post Natal Abortion". I don't like them, never have, never will. The bike becomes top heavy, prone to falling over, with your child strapped in & no way to escape. Tow behind trailers are MUCH safer - period.

Baby carriers for BMX bike?

.

Does anyone know where to get a baby/toddler carrier that would fit on a Mongoose Rebel BMX bike?
Not sure why that's funny...

Answer
No adult size bike available ? "Baby seats" are hard to find - because of operator abuse- insurance claims against mfg. Who wants to make an outdated inherently abused product. ?? Best solution - - trailer type device with infant helmet, of course !! Good luck, Dewey !

I have a bike trailer for my two babies but I don't know how is best to keep my 14week old safest. A helmet won't fit until at least 18 months and her car seat won't fit in with my 2 year old as well :0( Don't want to be stuck in a stuffy, hot car all summer so would really like to keep fit and take them out on the bike! Help!! Thanks in advance :0)

Answer
The infant in the car seat cannot ride with the toddler -- so just get a bicycle child seat http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Classic-Bicycle-Child-Carrier/dp/B000ISXSSA for the toddler -- kid will be much happier being up there behind you and watching around the road. Also should be available at Target, locally.

Where can I get a helmet for my 8 month old baby?

Jenna S

A friend just got me the child carrier seat for my bicycle and I need to know where to get a helmet. Thanks!
I have looked at Target, walmart, sports authority and none of them have helmets small enough for her.
I know it is not recommended to take them until they are one year of age however my daughter is walking on her own and I have spoke with her doctor and he thinks she is strong enough for me to take her.

Answer
It is not recommended that you take a child on a bike with you until they are 1 year or older . . . they are still developing good neck / back control and the weight of the helmet is not good for them.

Amazon has some helmets that you might be able to use when she is a bit bigger:

How can I lose 30-35 pounds the right way?

It doesn't matter the time I need to take. I've already cut out fast food for a month already, but I would like some ideas on healthy meals and a work out. I'm 35 pounds overweight, but I am a bit active (I have a 2 year to chase after at home and outside) and have been working out a little. Like I said, it could be any amount of time, so long as it's healthy. Thanks.

Answer
WOW! You mean you don't mind if it takes longer than two weeks? You want to do it the right way? Ok, forgive me, I feel better now. Just keep your calorie intake around 1500 from decent sources like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. Split that up into 5 smaller meals. You will probably have to increase your activity even though I know two year olds are energetic. Go to your library and sample exercise dvds, see if you can get a toddler bike carrier and take your child on bike rides. Aim for at least 30-45 minutes of exercise most days of the week. You can do it. You have the right attitude and that's key.

Anyone have a bicycle seat for baby that you love?

RearFace@1

I would love to get one for my 13 month old for this summer. Have the breeze in our hair and great exercise and freshness...I want the best for a good price, no more than $60 give or take. I am not sure what to look for. Any ideas or advice? I don't mind shopping online either, but I am not sure where to go and Google is just killin me today.

Also, a baby helmet too...?

Answer
I have absolutely no advice about what brand to get, I'm sorry. If you have a large sporting goods store near you that may be worth looking at. Chances are they would have some.

Mostly I'm just wanting to answer saying that I love the idea of a bicycle seat rather than a trailer. Everyone says that if you fall baby falls too, which is going to happen with a seat or a trailer. With a seat the baby is strapped in and protected on three sides like with a car seat. I'm more paranoid with the trailers. They make the bike longer, which means that you have more of an opportunity for a car or another bike to hit the trailer if they aren't paying attention. Plus if you fall on the bike the trailer is going to tip too, and often kids aren't as secured in them as they would be in a seat.

Here are two that I found on amazon. I think both look great, but for a younger toddler I would go with the one that has head support. The front mounted one looks like it would have better stability for the rest of the bike, but it looks a bit scary.
Good luck!
