Bicycle helmet for a child, how do we fit the helmet?

Ok my daughter is 4 years old and we are having a hard time with her bike helmet. It is a âtoddlerâ size helmet but my daughter is a bit big for her age (same size as the average 5 ½ year old). I know that helmets are supposed to fit âsnuglyâ but we are having a hard time getting the dumb thing to go on her head all the way! She is also having issues with the chinstrap; I know that is supposed to be snug as well but it cuts across her neck at a funny place and it irritates her skin because she has eczema. The real problem is this: I have only been able to find toddler sizes and adult sizes⦠arenât there sizes for children? Also what is the best way to keep the chinstrap from irritating her skin? Is there a way to figure out what her helmet âsizeâ would be?

Search around....there are plenty of "youth" sized helmets available. If you can't get the toddler helmet onto her noggin, don't force it. lol. Not only will that drive her crazy, but in the event of a crash it could actually hurt her instead of protecting her.

Any bike shop can get one for you if they don't happen to carry youth models. If you check http://www.jensonusa.com , http://www.nashbar.com , and http://www.pricepoint.com they should have a few to pick from (I'm positive that Jenson does....too lazy to check the other two but they normally have the bases covered).

To measure properly for size, just use a flexible sewing tape measure or a non-stretchy piece of string.....circle her head with it just above the eyebrows and measure it. Check the description on the helmet you're interested in and it should show the range of sizes it will fit. A helmet that fits her shouldn't irritate her skin if you adjust the straps properly. If her eczema makes that an issue, you could make some little tubes to cover the straps...maybe some microfleece or something soft like that.

Hope this helps....and good on you for caring enough about her safety to get advice! too many parents are so lazy about this...I cringe at some of the kids I've seen riding mtb trails without helmets or with really poorly fitted helmets. All it takes is one good crash.....

I would just like everyone's opinion of the little bicycle seats you can attach for you kids? Does anyone have experience with these things? Are they safe? What about those little wagon type things you pull behind you (which i'd really rather not use). I want to take my son riding with me.

The seats on the back are perfectly safe if YOU are a safe rider (which as a mommy I am SURE you are) just make sure to get a helmet that FITS baby's head and ride in places that dont have TRAFFIC

(I HATE it when bikers go out to ride for their "health" on a BUSY street where they are SO likely to get hit!! ESPECIALLY w/ kids in tow!! And I have seen it A LOT!)

As far as those wagons that you can pull behind you... those are CRAP!! They are almost IMPOSSIBLE to control and steer making it VERY HARD for you to control your OWN bike. Plus the "drag" that it has makes you have to work a LOT harder when peddling and you can pretty much FORGET going uphill w/ one of those things!!

Toddler tricycle... helmet, knee pads, what do I need?

My daughter is 18 months old and I want to get her a tricycle. I know its a bit young but the neighbor kids have ride-on toys and she is showing a lot of interest.

What do I need to get to make it safe for her to ride? She would only be using it on the sidewalk in front of our place, never on a street or without me right there. I guess I am the over protective kind of mom, she won't be riding alone till after she is 10 if I have my way. Is a helmet enough?

Yes for a tricycle a helmet is def. enough, and even for a bicycle with training wheels a helmet is enough also. I wouldn't put knees pads or elbow pads on my kid when they are riding a bike, unless maybe it's when they are learning to ride a two wheeler, but that's just me, if u feel better with them on then by all means put them on her, but it really is unnecessary.

Bicycle Helmet for a 2 year old?

My son just acquired a tricycle like toy. I want to get him used to wearing a helmet early on... Where online can I find a helmet for a 2 year old. I went to Wal Mart toady and thought maybe, just maybe the 3+ would fit, nope it didn't. Any suggestions? There aren't any specialized bike shops in my area. Looking for online only? Thanks a bunch

Bicycle safety?

I recently bought a bicycle with the rear child seat attached. I bought it used at a thrift store so it didnt have safety instructions for the seat.

How old does the child have to be before they can ride in it? My 7 month old sits up perfectly by herself and is very strong. But I cant find a safety helmet for anyone under age 3. I have tried walmart and toys'r'us.

Can I put my daughter in the seat? Do they make safety helmets for young babies? If so, where can I find one?

I believe all bike seats and bike trailers require a child to be at least 1 year. There are helmets available for toddlers, but I believe they also say for 1 year and older. Our local hospital does fittings and helmet sales but only for children over 1 year.

Unfortunately, you can't put a baby in a bike trailer. Even with a helmet, it's not safe. All the trailer manuals say you can't use them with a child under 1 year old. (It's for the same reason a child that young can't ride in a forward-facing car seat.)

The two commonly available top-of-the-line models are Chariot or Burley. The Chariots are nice because the front wheels--the ones you'd use if you were using the trailer as a stroller--go UNDER the rider's compartment instead of out front like the Burley.

That said, I have a double Burley. It was on super-sale at REI, and we're members, so we got it for half-price.

My 4 year old and 2 year old love it.

Is it safe for a toddler to ride on the back of bicycle? Won't my toddler get hurt if I crash by accident?

I plan on both of us using helmets but accidents do happen. Those little carts that a bicycle pulls aren't very safe either , are they?
My toddler is only 14 months old. Getting a little bike is not an option. :-(.I also would be riding along side my son who is almost 5 years old.
The side car seems like an option :-)

There is always a risk of injury on a bicycle. The carts more safe than the bicycle seats, since the child has less space to fall if you tip over. Trailers that go in the back can be dangerous, since they have a low profile and are not easily seen by motorists.

My chiropractor is into cycling and just did a 600 mile run with his wife and two boys this past summer. They use a side car for the above reasons.

Is it okay if a toddler falls asleep while strapped to a safety seat on a bicycle?

When riding, I usually glance back every few minutes, but sometimes my daughter starts nodding. I stop and we take a water break. She gets sleepy because of the cool breeze, the rhythmic feelings of the bicycle, and the incessant visual stimulation, but is it alright to keep peddling with her head down? She's strapped in, has a safety bar on her child seat on the bike, and we both have helmets.

Anyone have a bicycle seat for baby that you love?

I would love to get one for my 13 month old for this summer. Have the breeze in our hair and great exercise and freshness...I want the best for a good price, no more than $60 give or take. I am not sure what to look for. Any ideas or advice? I don't mind shopping online either, but I am not sure where to go and Google is just killin me today.

Also, a baby helmet too...?

I have absolutely no advice about what brand to get, I'm sorry. If you have a large sporting goods store near you that may be worth looking at. Chances are they would have some.

Mostly I'm just wanting to answer saying that I love the idea of a bicycle seat rather than a trailer. Everyone says that if you fall baby falls too, which is going to happen with a seat or a trailer. With a seat the baby is strapped in and protected on three sides like with a car seat. I'm more paranoid with the trailers. They make the bike longer, which means that you have more of an opportunity for a car or another bike to hit the trailer if they aren't paying attention. Plus if you fall on the bike the trailer is going to tip too, and often kids aren't as secured in them as they would be in a seat.

Here are two that I found on amazon. I think both look great, but for a younger toddler I would go with the one that has head support. The front mounted one looks like it would have better stability for the rest of the bike, but it looks a bit scary.
