Q. we are looking to get our son a 20 inch bike. he is turning 6 in a month and he is a tall boy so we were thinking a 20 inch would last him a good long time compared to his current 16 inch bike. is 20 inch a good size to get him to last him a long time?

a walmart bike is fine. the higher priced bikes are made with higher quality parts to ensure a longer life. a kid's bike is only going to be used 3 or 4 years. its fine. happy biking.

hey! also, in my town, our local police force had an auction in the spring. i was surprised at the condition of some of the bikes there. it really is worth trying if your city has any event like this.

Wal*Mart does sell Bell helmets. They won't be great quality though. They would be fine for a kid riding a dirt bike around the house but I wouldn't use them on the road if it were me. Any motorcycle shop will sell helmets and if you have a Cycle Gear nearby they have a great selection. If you look on the right side of their home page there is a store locator by zip code.

how much should I sell a used kids bike for? (answer plz)?

I got this bike from a friend in middle school I'm starting college soon and I want to sell just b/c it's too small for me as I've grown in height. So I'm wondering how much should I sell it for? The handle's are a little torn (they were like that before I got it) and the seat is a little torn up too. But I think I can replace both of those right? The bike itself rides great and has gears too. I was thinking $50-60 or best offer on craigslist. Does that sound like a fair amount if I buy new handle covers (I'm not exactly sure what their called) and a new seat? thnxs for the tips

If you have been able to use the bike for five years, find someone who needs a bike and give it to them. While you may want the money, the good karma is worth a lot more.

What bike should I buy 6 year old boy for first bike?

I just got new bikes for my 5 year olds. We ended up getting a smaller size BMX style bike that has coaster brakes and hand brakes. That way they can start getting used to the hand brake but not have to rely on it. Once their hands get used to the hand brakes I'm going to switch out the coaster brake for a freewheel then the bike should last another couple years.

I would definitely get a 20" wheel (the standard size for bmx bikes) bike so they can grow with it for a few years. If you get anything smaller than that they will be grown out of it before the year is over and you'll be getting a new one for him to ride to school.

If you go to a real bike shop that sells trek, specialized or other name brand bikes they will have some you can look at and they really aren't that expensive when you look at kids size bikes.

I completely agree - avoid the cartoon bikes. They are silly and a waste of money.

i saw in news paper there not selling kids motor bikes because of lead in the metal parts. is this dangerous? can you still buy used bikes?

Every car and motorcycle contains some lead (think battery, for example) so ALL children's motorcycles and atv's from every manufacturer have had to be pulled from the market.

The original intent of this law was to keep young children from swallowing or chewing toys that might contain lead, a knee-jerk reaction to all those leaded Chinese toys. The only part of a motorcycle which might flake off and be swallowed or inhaled is the paint and it contains no lead, but so far this has not been enough to grant motorcycles an exemption, even though all kinds of other lead-containing products have been granted one. The case is under appeal, but in the meantime no bike dealer can sell kids motorcycles new or used.

Do you feel partly responsible for actions of your generation?

Just wondering if baby boomers relate to other baby boomers and take part of the responsibility for when they were in political and social control (30-50 years of age). Same goes for Gen X and Gen Y. Say, if someone is 26 I'd say we lack initiative and our political protest is limited to blogging. Considering the level of potential threat from climate change not enough kids actually bike to work and eat less meat.

I agree with Maria to a point. I am 80 years of age and have seen many generation pass, each one doing its own thing by being influenced by the actions of other others. I will say this though, if we have the chance to influence even one person to do that which is right then we have an obligation to do so.
The problem with individuals is that they are influenced by their peer groups. Some of the answers given to your question are hard and perhaps a little unfair. There are many of this generation who are good young people, but as that which is good in them is overshadowed by that which is bad in others, all are tarred with the same brush. Do not sell your generation short. There is a saying which goes "There is so much good in the worst of crows, and so much bad in the best of humans, that it ill becomes humans to talk about crows" - Albert Hubbard.
If we are to influence this or any other generation, then let us start in our own families.

What can I expect from a Mountain Bike Trail?

I'm planning to go biking in a Mountain Bike Trail but I've never been or seen a mountain bike trail, so I was wondering what will I see once I get there, I mean, are the paths always made of concrete (like a sidewalk) or is it a natural path?
Also I need to buy a bike to go there, what would you recomend me and in what price range are the Mountain Bike Trail bikes?

Real trails are mostly or all dirt, gravel, sand. Hard pack dirt is the best. You will encounter steep short hills and some times long hills depending were you live and ride. Tree roots (very slippery when wet) rocks, small to medium logs to hump over, bumpy rutted down hill are common. Sometimes trails are very narrow between trees with tight turns etc. and small very narrow bridges (hand built) over wet spots are common where I ride. Trails vary widely.

Ask around, trails are rated for difficulty. For a first ride choose the easiest you can find. I don't want to scare you but the 1st time out is an eye-opener for most riders. When I take newbies out I go to the easiest trail which crosses park roads so if they had enough for the day we just ride the road back to the car.

As for the bike, try to buy above the $300 - $400 price range if you really want to trail ride. Wally Mart type bikes will not hold up to the abuse taken on a trail. There OK for once in a while trial rides. Best thing would be to borrow a bike to try it out - trails I mean. If you really like it and are a good athlete spend $600+ to get a bike that will be well equiped to work well under trail conditions. Stay away from duel suspension bikes - they added weight and $$$ and are certainly not needed. They are sold a lot in discount stores because kids (and adults) think there cool.

Make sure you ride on the road to get in at least OK shape and can handle and shift you bike very well. MTB riding requires much more skill than road riding. Finally, go when it's dry.
