26" GT Aggressor Mountain Bike?

Wes

I found one of these on Craigslist for $150. Its six years old and rarely used. Im not too up to speed on mountain biking, other than I'm not suppose to get a bike at a department store (seems to be the consensus I'm getting).

How are these bikes?
Is this a decent price for this particular model?

Thanks,

PS, I ride mainly on pavements, pulling my kids in a bike trailer.

Answer
The #1 problem I see is - people always buying ATB or off-road bikes when they never go off-road. Get the point? Yeah...if you install some different tires on it, it would ride a lot better on pavement.

But you'll still have those suspension parts chewing up your energy. With every stroke of the pedals, part of your energy is soaked up by suspension parts & not transmitted to the rear wheel.

What type of bike(s) should I buy?

I have a 8 year old son who wants a "mountain bike" for his birthday. I would like to purchase a pair of bikes for myself and him to use. I have 15 acres of property that I would like to use these bikes on. It is mostly flat grassland but there is rough terrain and some 10 to 15-foot hills to ride over. These bikes will not be used on the street. Any suggestions on what type and brand of bikes for beginners(adult and kid)that can be purchased reasonably? For occasional use that can take a beating? Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
For this terrain, one would suggest a "Double Boinger" or in other words, a full suspension mountain bike.

These can be quite expensive, so one may substitute a "regular" mountain bike, also called a hardtail. These have front shocks and no rear suspension, and they cost a lot less.
Make up the difference by using a springer saddle or a suspension seatpost. Either seatpost or springer saddle will cost about $20 each bike, so this method is far less expensive than a "Double Boinger" style.

At the $20 price range, the springer saddle is more reliable technology, and they were once considered a "required" part of the enjoyment of cycling. Bike shops have quite a variety and so does www.bikepartsusa.com and amazon.com. Avoid the "Web Spring" or "Mattress" variety and just go with the easy and simple two steel spring or two rubber spring sort to get some very enjoyable results.

While it is best to purchase your bikes from a real bike store, Schwinn and Diamondback will always give you usable quality bikes with name brand components at every price point. So, if you get a very cheap bike, do make sure it is one of those two brands. These can be found at Target in a limited selection of size ranges, but if you're taller than 5'10" then its off to the bike store with you. ;)
Lower priced options exist, but will cost you a great deal in repairs and lost enjoyment.

IMPORTANT: The point of sizing is to get a bike that makes you WANT to go cycling. Don't settle for less than that.

IMPORTANT: In any case, make certain that the rear derailer has the name "Shimano" or the name "SRAM" printed directly on it.

For your son. Get him as large a bike as he can stand over with at least an inch "clearance" to the top tube. It is not important if he can reach the ground from the seat, as that's not correct seat adjustment anyway--legs need to straighten fully when pedaling. Just make sure that he can stand over it and that it doesn't look like a toy.

For you, the same sizing applies, but for a different reason. Make sure that the bike is large enough to give you a comfortable reach for the handlebars.

While it is possible to re-size (UP) the $139 Schwinn mountain bike, the cost of the stem riser adapter and stronger seat post, plus installation, may inflate the price of the bike up to a bike-store-bike price, and you might as well just get the right size to start with. That's why I said that if you're over 5'10" then you really do need to go to the bike store. A Diamondback, Raliegh, or Schwinn dealer can still get you a good price.

This New Star Mini Super Motorcross bike 6V Battery Operated Motorcycle includes a 6V battery and recharger. It requires 4 AA batteries for engine sounds, which are not included. This motorcycle is suitable for ages 18 to 36 months and it comes with removable training wheels. The weight capacity of this vehicle is 55 pounds and its speed range from is 0.93 to 1.24 mph.

Product Description
For aspiring little Grand Prix champs, this mini motorbike - complete with cool racing decals and realistic sounds - is the most excitement this side of the checkered flag!

My boys ages 2 and 4 love this bike! My two year old hadn't gotten the concept of steering in 1 year of owning his tricycle but in a few minutes on a motorized bike he figured it out after running into enough walls. Originally I purchased this bike for my older son only and got my 2 year old a three wheel smaller version from another company that was supposed to go the same speed...it didn't. My older son was running 3 laps around my younger son litterally as they rode around the house. I didn't think that my younger son would be able to handle the bigger bike but to our surprise when my oldest turned his back he jumped on his bike and took off!...so we sent his bike back and ordered him the mini motorcross as well. I like that they have to master coordinating their feet and steering and the switch of forward and reverse...very user friendly for the kids.

Answer
This "so-called" bicycle? http://www.amazon.com/Fusion-Suspension-Mountain-Orange-26-Inch/dp/B001DERH4E

A) Yes, you are waaaaay too tall for that bike.
B) Quit thinking tire or wheel size. You NEED a bigger (taller) FRAME size.
C) It's a crappy bike.
D) With a cheap full suspension bike you will B-O-U-N-C-E down the road more than ride down the road.
E) Unless you're off road a LOT - you don't NEED a full squish bike, especially a cheap one. Suspension parts absorb or soak up YOUR energy. With every stroke of the pedals, part of YOUR energy is soaked up by those parts & NOT transmitted to the rear wheel.

Want or need a good bike? Then Go To A Bicycle Shop - not online. You can test ride anything you like B4 the sale. Amazing! That "thing" you referred to would be broke in 6 months to a year at the most. Designed for kids & teenagers - not someone 6' 3" tall.

Tandem bike with kids?

R K

I have a 8year old and a 6 year old. We like to bike but are not seasoned bikers. So far I have only taken my kids to the playground to bike but would like to go out on trails and maybe even use the bike to get to nearby places but I am not confident enough to let my kids ride on their own. I was thinking of maybe getting a triplet tandem so we can enjoy biking together without worrying about if the kids are following properly. Eventually we will get comfortable with biking everywhere and be on our own bikes..
I am wondering about my options as far as the bike itself is concerned. Is there one you use and love? I want both kids to pedal and participate. I would appreciate tips on the bike itself, getting around on a tandem and especially parking it and keeping it safe. If we take it to the library for example, do we just lock it in the normal bike stand area?

Thank you

Answer
The 8 yr. old is plenty old enough to get on his/her own bike. For the 6 yr. old - get a tag-along if you must.

As a parent - it's YOUR job to teach them cycling safety without being dependent on you all the time. Sooner or later they'll want to be on their own. Start with these links...

Where can i buy bmx bikes without brake lines?

Brian

I want one of those bmx bikes that have no brake lines and you break by pedaling backwards. Anyone here know where I can buy those?

Answer
Wal-Mart or Academy.

If it has coaster brakes it's not a real BMX, it's a kids bike. If however you're set on getting a real BMX and having a coaster brake you can order a coaster brake rim, I think I saw some at DansComp.com and I know for sure Amazon will have a few.

That being said if you want better quality and a coaster brake Haro's Z-Line of bikes, while still kids bikes, are at least better quality. They're still bottom rung for Haro, but bottom rung for Haro is out of reach to Yoa Ming if he's standing at the top of the Wal-Mart/Academy ladder.

----update----

I took a nap and it jogged my memory, you can get 20" Skyway Tuffs's with a coaster brake. I looked on the PlanetBMX website and only blue remains, but I'm throwing in a link below. If you want high quality and durable (and weight isn't your chief concern) these are one of the best ways to go. If you want style get a white, red, or maybe yellow frame and put a blue seat and grips on to match the wheels. If you really want to go for style get tires in a color to match the frame, at 20" size you can do that, unfortunately I can't find red 24" tires to save my life :-)

I have a bike trailer for my two babies but I don't know how is best to keep my 14week old safest. A helmet won't fit until at least 18 months and her car seat won't fit in with my 2 year old as well :0( Don't want to be stuck in a stuffy, hot car all summer so would really like to keep fit and take them out on the bike! Help!! Thanks in advance :0)

Answer
The infant in the car seat cannot ride with the toddler -- so just get a bicycle child seat http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Classic-Bicycle-Child-Carrier/dp/B000ISXSSA for the toddler -- kid will be much happier being up there behind you and watching around the road. Also should be available at Target, locally.

What word would describe the noise that you hear when you put a card through the spokes on a bike?

Q. like what word would that be? It wouldnt be "rattling or clunking or ticking" what word would describe it? like when the wheel turns and the card makes that sound because its going through the spokes
Hey guys please one word. the reason is it sounds the same as when im driving my f150 and i need that same sound word as for i could explain to someone the sound coming from under my truck where the middle of the driveshaft where the yoke is. i just changed my balljoints. but the one that put the pbbbttt or watev lol is the closest. please one word. i need this word to describe that sound. its not coming from the tires or wheels. its coming from the middle of the truck. it kidna sounds like the universal joints are goin dry but i dont know for sure

Answer
That's how kids years ago tried to reproduce the sound of a motorcycle. They've gotten a little more "high tech" today. See link...

Birthday gift ideas for a 14 year old boy?

Yep me

My son is turning 14, and he isn't giving out enough ideas for gifts. He has a laptop and an Xbox 360. He plays fighting/shooting games on them. We have 2 dogs, and he plays basketball, rides his bike, and plays on our trampoline. Please! I need ideas!

Answer
does he have an ipod touch? they're expensive, around two hundred dollars, but if you bought him one with a twenty five dollar gift card and some earphones he'd love you. if you consider this get skullcandy earphones, they're the best. im 14 and everyone has an ipod where i live; i got one last year and it was the best present i've ever gotten besides my ps3 and xbox.

if he doesn't have call of duty: black ops or mw3 you could get him that (though he probably already has it), but ask him if he likes it first. don't waste your money. another good game is assassin's creed 3 and elder scrolls: skyrim on xbox 360. this is my personal opinion but don't get mass effect 3 (a game that came out recently). the endings are terrible. dragonage 1 is a good game, but dragonage 2 is pretty bad. the whole entire time i tried to convince myself that its a good game like the previous but i just couldnt

anyways... i also have a dirtbike and longboard. those are mad fun, but dirtbikes are also like two hundred bucks. if he likes bikes consider a dirtbike or ask him about it

does he have a steam account (Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation (o yea i just copied that right off wikipedia i got swag))? if he does get him a vanilla card and let him buy games on there. i just got metro 2033 and total war on pc and theyre awesome.

if he has a favorite basketball player or something, you could buy a fathead for your son (could be about 100 dollars). thatd be pretty funny if i woke up to a life size michael jordan or on my wall lol id be like damn when did that get there

if he has a favorite book series... check which ones he has and get him the next one. though maybe hes not really into books.

lastly... no kid would mind if u just gave him 100 bucks or a vanilla gift card with 100 bucks on it. that way he could buy anything on like, amazon or something he likes. it gives him choice, so its a great present.

oh, i forgot. if he likes southpark, or family guy, dvd sets are good. just anything of his favorite tv show. southpark ftw

good luck dude, im sure whatever u pick will be good mamacita
