Kids bikes are denoted by wheel size (unlike adult bikes) Take her to a bike shop (or sporting goods store but NOT kmart/walmart/target unless you want her to take biking)

A 12" is usually the smallest size then 16" 20" and 24". It all depends on how tall she is. You have to have her sit on a bike to see if it fits her right. Not all bikes are the same size even if they are listed as the same size. Different maufactuers do things differently. She is probably somewhere around a 16" size now thought. That said, remember she will outgrow it really soon. If she can sit on a 20" comfortably (even with the seat down pretty low) then that would be a bike she could grow in to.

Want to buy my nephew a new bike for his birthday. He will be turning 4. What should I look for? I know he needs trainning wheels, but don't know what size to look for.

If he's small or average for his age he will need a 12" bike. If on the larger side maybe a 16". Both normally come with training wheels. Best thing is to head over to Wal Mart, Target, Toy r Us etc. and see how they fit. If it's a surprise you can always buy one and take it back if not right. Make sure to not get something he will grow out of by fall.

I would not take a 4 yo to a bike shop - most don't even carry kiddie bikes anyway.

What are bike gears and what do they do?

I only had one bike in life, which was a present. It was a kids bike so there was no gears I could use and stuff. But now that I have outgrown the bike, I am shopping around for a new one. I see the handlebars have this controller thing that appears to be gears or something, and I have no idea what they mean and how they work. Also, I see bikes advertised as "21-speed Bike" and etc, what does that mean?

You have led a sheltered life, haven't you.
The gears are used to make cycling easier. Higher gears are used downhill to gain speed without pedaling like mad, while the lower gears are for going uphill where you pedal faster but expend less effort.
A 21 speed bike has 21 speeds available. That one would have 7 speeds on the rear wheel and 3 on the pedal sprocket 3 x 7 =21. The 3 pedal sprocket gears are used for general speed range changing. The lowest for use in hilly country, the second for flat and the top speed range for downhill. The (7) rear wheel gears are used for uphill and downhill as I described before.

Why are the pedals on my sons bike so hard to push?

My son has had a hard time pedaling his 16" kids bike. I even tried it out and struggled. Put air in the tires and its not the brakes. I'm at a loss what good is a brand new bike that doesn't work right? Can this problem be fixed?
We bought it new over year ago.

Is it new? Then that's normal. Just tell him to take it for a ride now and then.

I just need to figure out what time to leave so I can get to work, allowing about 15 minutes for a couple breaks if needed. I only have a kid bike, nothing fast or fancy.

best way for you to know, is go for a test run on your day off. go at a pace you're comfortable with, and time yourself. too many factors are involved for us to say "an hour", "45 minutes", "2 hours".

How and where do I attach a kids bike trailer to my bike? I cannot find where it goes.?
