Product Description
For aspiring little Grand Prix champs, this mini motorbike - complete with cool racing decals and realistic sounds - is the most excitement this side of the checkered flag!

My boys ages 2 and 4 love this bike! My two year old hadn't gotten the concept of steering in 1 year of owning his tricycle but in a few minutes on a motorized bike he figured it out after running into enough walls. Originally I purchased this bike for my older son only and got my 2 year old a three wheel smaller version from another company that was supposed to go the same speed...it didn't. My older son was running 3 laps around my younger son litterally as they rode around the house. I didn't think that my younger son would be able to handle the bigger bike but to our surprise when my oldest turned his back he jumped on his bike and took off!...so we sent his bike back and ordered him the mini motorcross as well. I like that they have to master coordinating their feet and steering and the switch of forward and reverse...very user friendly for the kids.

Best BMX bike for small kids?

Ozean Okea

My son just turn 4, he has a Strider bike that he loves and fully controls but it's time to get him one with pedals. I want something lightweight and good to do tricks at the skate park because that's what he likes and wants to do, but everything in retail shops is heavy and bad quality. What brand would you recommend for a kid that is starting?

Answer
Regrettably, you really can't size a bike by age... kids come in all shapes and sizes.

If you are looking for a quality bike with 16" wheels you may as well forget it. Manufacturers make the assumption that the bike will be ridden for no more than a year until the child grows out of it... BUT, if you don't mind spending the money you could have one built for you. A frame and fork would cost about $800-1500, and a build kit would have to be pieced together which would cost about the same. There are VERY few light/ high grade small bike parts so any adult sized parts would have to be modified one way or another.

If 2 or 3 grand is more than what you want to spend I suggest that you visit a Diamondback dealer. They do a reasonably good job with their kids bikes and you may be able to get away with around $150.

What bike should we buy for comfort rides?

We don't want to spend more than $500 per bike. Most of the use is city/neighborhood and paved greenways with some riverside trails. I live in Atlanta so I need gears for all the hills. My husband and I are both tall and don't want to stoop over the bike either. We're looking for comfort while out with the kids. What are the best manufacturers? Bike shops? Styles? Features? I'm a novice wanting to make the best decision possible.

Should shops/stores that put a bike together incorrectly be held accountable?

dread head

I got to thinking after answering a question on this thing. I thought if a shop shows negligence in the building of a bicycle, should the shop be held accountable if an accident happens; upon failure of the build? Let's take it a step father. Should they bike manufacturer be held accountable if their product fails causing serious injury to a person?
the bike is being used 100% properly. Department stores are notorious for doing this. I want to know more from the bike shop crowd.

Answer
Given the fact that bikes purchased from dept stores are junk anyway and should not be purchased by anyone, and if they are they should be checked out completely by a competent authority.
The larger question is WHO is defined as competent? Me, You ....the next guy in the shop down the street?
Lets assume that every independent bike shop that sells a bike checks it before that customer leaves the store with it to ensure that it is mechanically safe for the new owner. Lets also assume that it was checked by someone qualified to do so and the new owner takes it home and uses it and DOES NOT start playing with it beyond their capacity and ends up screwing something up, rides it anyway and it fails them. Now whos fault is it?
I have seen this happen with mountain bikes purchased (that I have sold to teenagers) and they take them home and figure the fork isnt enough for them and they start removing the caps that arent supposed to be turned on a lower end fork and oil goes all over mom and dads new white carpet and the spring shoots out and goes thru a wall. Mom and dad come in and start bitching at US because WE failed to tell that kid not to mess with his new bike without consulting us and now they want to sue us....All kinds of scenarios out there and for those shops who dot their I's and cross their T's there is still only so much that you can do with quality control in the store and once that product has left the store you have no idea of what is going on with that product and what that customer will come up with....
I have seen a customer return a bike demanding their money back because the day after they purchased a bike they had a flat tire.....!
There are checks and balances in every shop of some kind and the paperwork trail is essential to pinning down the build of a bike and who preformed this task to who finaled the bike when it was purchased to the inspection of the bike out of the box and the paperwork that must be done during the sale to prevent that ever looming lawsuit that may get incurred after that bike leaves the store.

It can never be assumed that the end user will use that product 100% properly but it would be nice to think that is the case. Since I have been in retail, my expectations and perceptions of the public as a whole has taken a nosedive in the last 3 years.

There is a reason that we have lawyers and courts and unfortunately we cant always do enough to prevent the idiots from buying a bike or always catch the inept bike builder before its too late. In my store we make sure that at least 3 people (one manager+builder and one experienced sales person) inspect each and every bike before it goes to the floor and that all paperwork up to that point is 100% complete.
we are routinely updated with product recalls (if any) and faulty products affecting safety of the rider and only one comes to mind recently on a Dahon folding bike of which two out of 5 we had on the floor were affected and we had those 2 off the floor before the store opened that morning. Problem averted!

Sales associates all have their own routine but the final bit of paperwork before the sale goes out the door is the same for everyone and there is always the human factor in play. We are all vunerable to make mistakes in any given day...all of us. We do the best that we are capable of and everyone has a bad day too, you just hope it wasnt mine on the day you came in to buy your bike. The customer should be a smart shopper and informed but most are not and impulse buying is routine as I observe maybe 1/10 customers actually take the time to be informed and have common sense to ask the right questions and actually have a clue as to what they want and know what they are looking at and that is not the customer I worry about. And i have scratched my head with quite a few!
Personally I think all dept store bikes be banned for sale in this country anyway, but I know that will never happen unfortunately.

What is the name of the bike accessory where there is a basket for kid and shopping on the front?

I was in Amsterdam and saw a bike with a wagon like attachement. It was wooden and had a little bench where kids could sit. I did not get the name of it and have been looking online for it but can't locate anything like it.

Answer
If the thing you saw was wooden, my guess is it was homemade.

However, if by "wagon like" you mean it was something towed behind the bike, then there are lots of those available, and I guarantee they're safer and more comfortable than anything made out of wood. They generally are light weight, have a full frame around them and five point harness to protect kids in a crash, have rain/wind covers, have room for one or two children plus some cargo room, and are designed for "normal riding" meaning they can go 20+mph, and don't have much of an effect on the towing bicycle. They attach to almost any bike. For examples see http://www.burley.com/ although there are other manufacturers too. While the wooden one you saw may have been cute, I'm guessing it would be heavy, uncomfortable for the kids, and completely unsafe for anything but walking speed in an area with few or no cars (especially in the US where cars aren't generally looking for bikes).

If by "shopping on the front" you mean the thing was on the front of the bike (above the front wheel), then I would say its a bad idea. Unless the bike was specifically designed to have cargo in front (very rare in the US, but more common overseas), adding that kind of weight to the front will cause the bike to steer very unpredictably. It will also expose the child to full impact with any type of crash. Even hitting a dog or curb at low speed would be a problem, since the extra weight in front would tend to pitch the whole bike forward over the bars.

Does eating whole grain foods really make a difference?

Sparky

I'm curious about something. Why is it that there seems to be more overweight people these days when there are so many people turning to whole grains and health food? For years people ate white potatoes, white bread, white rice, etc and were not overweight. Is it really the food or is it something else that's making this country have such a weight problem? Food manufacturers are making everything "healthy" using whole grains but yet people still battle with weight problems. Does it really matter if we eat whole grains or not? Or is it the lack of exercise or something else that's really the problem? All I know is that these "healthy" foods that are supposedly unprocessed which to me means less processing, are really expensive. Shouldn't less processing be less expensive? Is the food industry just trying to make money off of people trying to be healthy?

Answer
food nowadays has more sugar and more calories packed into every inch. the reason health food costs more is because they not only process it less, but they put less preservatives in it which makes it harder to ship, stock and sell. also think about how our culture has changed. now we eat supposedly better things, but back in the day of white everything kids had to ride their bikes to friends houses, a night of fun consisted of walking between everyone's houses to pick them up. kids played basketball after school instead of tony hawk pro skater. everyone was involved in an afterschool sport because it was soo freeking cool. now everyone can get their entertainment from doing things while sitting on their butts. sitting on butt = not burning calories.
