Cheap Road bike?

Kristie L

Hi,
I need a road bike for an 18 mile race two weeks away. Other than that I will use it on a bike path and the road about 2 miles at a time. I really want a cheap bike, no more than $300. But now that Iâm researching, the one bike I thought I would get, the GMC Denali Women's Road Bike, people say itâs not a good bike. I cannot spend a lot of money. What will work? I really donât like that straight bar from the handle to the seat. Can I get away with a more angled bar? As a kid, I remembered borrowing a âboysâ bike and finding that bar annoying.

Also, this is a triathlon I doing. I will swim ½ mile first. I donât care about time or winning, as long as Iâm within what they allow. I just want to cross the finish line. I noticed that they sell triathlon suits good for all three parts of the race. Do people really leave a wet suit on for biking or do some people change into dry clothes? Is a wet bathing suit really uncomfortable will biking, running?

Thank you.

Answer
The Denali you mentioned is not a very good bike, I've seen them at Wally Mart ... BUT if you will hardly ride it then sure it's fine to get, it will work and for the ocassional 15 minute ride it's more than fine. Really cheap road bikes are very hard to find.

Many bikes are sold with a sloping top tubes now. The top tube slopes down towards the seat. That could be an option in many brands of bikes.

Isn't there anyway you could borrow a bike for this one time event? 18 miles isn't very long and to buy a bike that you really won't use seems a waste. Some bike shops will rent a bike for the day check it out. It just depends where you live. Same thing for the Tri suit. Buy it for a couple hours use? No way. Use a swim suit and you can throw on shorts over it if your modest for the ride/run. Make sure the shorts are NOT cotton, but made of anything that dries fast.

What have you been riding to train for this? You have done a little training??? Maybe?

From what you say this is a one time short Tri you want to do . Very cool, but borrow or rent if you can. Don't buy stuff you'll never use just to look cool. Be happy you want to do this and if you make the cut off Congrates to you.

Good Luck

hey i am looking for dirt cheap dirt bikes for my kids, they r beginers, and will have frequent wrecks ,?

littlebit

can"t afford super nice, low cc"s, to start, las vegas r st george area prefered . hey i do know there is a dealer somewhere in vegas, but i don"t know his name. he sells used for a couple hundred. that is what i am looking for, 1 st time riders, no need for new. they need something to keep them busy and as a single parent i cannot afford fancy,,, just for wrecking,,, thanks mel

Answer
The thing is if you buy a cheap (chinese or taiwanese) off-brand bike for under $500 it will break very quickly.

You don't mention how old your kids are, but for young ones, the Honda Z50 (made into the 1990's), the XR50 (made until a few years ago), and the CRF50 (made since 2003) are bullet proof machines that will withstand pretty much anything the average kid can dish out.

For larger kids, still stick with the major Japanese brands, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki all make good quality small dirt bikes that you can get relatively cheaply used.

If you tell us your kids age and height, we can be more specific with options.

Check out Las Vegas Motorsports for Suzuki and Yamaha, and Las Vegas Honda for the red bikes. They also have used models.

Theres also a non-affiliated store on Charleston - Motorcycle Tire Warehouse, something like that - good people, and they've usually got a nice selection of used models.

St. George has some small shops also, but I think you might find your best deals in Vegas.

boys bike.....questions?

Teresa E

I am looking to buy two cheap used bikes for my boys to play on. Someone online has two boy bike for sale but they do not have pictures. The price is very cheap but the bikes are a little far from here so i want to see about what they look like before I purchase them.

Do you know where I can see a picture of a Venom Murray Blue 21 speed AND a Next Rampage Hardtail orange system 20? I also want to know how much they cost new. Any help will be apprecaited. Thanks

Answer
you'll spend more at the bike shop maintaining these bikes, than you will in purchasing them. unfortunately, this is not a good time of year to purchase a kids bike. many shops are sold out on kid bikes. however, the maintenance cost of a cheap bike, especially a used one that has no record of how it is maintained, will run higher in the long run, than the higher initial purchase, and typically lower maintenance, of a better quality bike purchased at a bike shop..

Mountain Bike Question?

oakleyfire

i am looking for a mountain bike to trail ride with in palo duro canyon in texas. what is a normal wheel size for off road use? 20 or 26 inch? what would be a cheap but good bike to use?

Answer
26" is the standard for modern off road bikes. 20" is reserved for BMX and kids bikes.

some decent brands that are cheap are Diamondback and Ironhorse. Dicks and sports authority sells them. if you want something simple that will last a while and doesnt require much maintainence, get a hardtail for $300-$500. a decent dual suspension bike for a beginner will run $600-$800. anything more than that, and you get the "real" parts. things that are serviceable and adjustable.

Suggestions for a CHEAP hybrid bike?

Jenny

I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid but I want to start riding a bike to get in shape. What are some suggestions for a good, but cheap Hybrid bike from Wal-mart or Target? I want to be able to ride on the gravel trails around here, but not off-road, so I don't want a mountain bike. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Answer
For riding on gravel trails, the hybrid bike is a good choice. It's got bigger wheels like a road bike and a more upright position. It also has mountain bike style gearing in case you run into hills. I own a hybrid for just that purpose and it works very well.

Don't go to WalMart or Target. The bikes they sell are one size fits all, are heavy, don't work very well, and don't last very long. Your local bike shop will have bikes at the low end of the price range, probably starting around $250 to $350. Brands don't matter. Bikes that cost the same are usually built the same and have the same components. Unlike the WalMart, a bike shop will have bikes that fit you. They know how to properly assemble them. You will be much more comfortable and much safer.

Above all, save enough money for a helmet. Don't put your butt on the seat without a helmet on your head.

trouble putting front tire on kids bike?

I just bought a new 16" bike for my 5 year old. Some assembly is required and that's normally not an issue at all. The front tire, however, does not fit on the fork(the fork is too narrow). anyone have any tips? The bike is a very basic girls Pacific Twirl.

Answer
You will need to pull them apart a little, most cheap bikes are like that. If it looks bent take it back, but most of the time you will have to spread the forks.

argh.pirat

What brands are respected freestyle BMX bikes? I thought Mongoose where cheap kids bikes but they're everywhere. From what I can tell I should be looking for one that's 20". I'd like to ride street and vert for now and am looking for something under $150.

Answer
20" has a lot of possibilities... it would take a while to find one under 150, i would expect to find one under 200. go on danscomp.com , they have a lot of bikes. heres 2 under 200
(red looks better even though they dont have full pic for #1) http://www.danscomp.com/101140.php?cat=BIKES http://www.danscomp.com/101466.php?cat=BIKES

Do pawn shops have a set price for items they buy?

Joe Quiksi

Like lets say you wanna sell a guitar to them. Do they already know without looking at it that the most they can spend on it is lets say $40 because they might sell it for $120. (electric guitar, decent brand) or are they actually willing to spend a little more because they know it might be worth it. Or another example is with a bike. I own a Trek mountain bike worth about $900 retail. going about $500 used. I took it to a pawn shop the other day and tried to sell it. Before the lady even looked at it she said she can only pay $25. She explained that those bikes are going for about $100 new. But she ASSUMED I had some cheap kids bike. So do they have a set price on what they can spend on certain items?

Answer
Business owners are free to set the prices they will pay.

Many pawn shops avoid high-ticket items for fear of them being confiscated as stolen. Perhaps if you brought in a sales receipt and confirmed product registration to prove ownership.

and when did shipping become so expensive? i can see paying $14 for a set of ape hanger lowrider handlebars but why $20+ for standard ground shipping? when i was a kid lowrider bikes were cheap to make and cost $150 already built from the store apposed to now $250+ smh.

Answer
The price on parts for all bikes have gone up these past years and more people want to buy them for their old Muscle Bikes, Lowriders and some put them on their Antique/Vintage Balloon tire & middleweight bikes aka beach cruisers.

You should see the prices of original ones from the 1960's & 70's bikes but that is partly because people want original parts.

Wald is usually the cheapest & a real good company that has been around for a very long time that can be found at a few local bike shops.

Here is one on ebay but they are short ones.

What are some cheap things to do in Florida for a vacation?

monkeychil

My boyfriend and I are planning on taking a trip to Florida this spring. We do not have a lot for cash, but still want to enjoy our time there. We went a couple of year's ago to Disney World, so we've been there, done that and we don't have kids.

Any cheap, thrifty ways we can enjoy our vacation and still have fun? Also we'll be staying in the North Port area.

Answer
You can go camping... that's usually a good time with the weather and all in Florida. Its cheap too, about $20 a night.
The beach is always a good idea. And free. Or go swimming at a spring or lake.
You can go canoeing, which is also cheap. Or take a boat ride.
You can go to parks and hike, take pictures, ride bikes.
Any water parks.. if you will be near Tampa or Orlando. They are fun and usually cheaper than the other theme parks.
