What age should kids Be aloud to ride their bike around?

So my mom is the protective type and my family is in a tough situation as far as money goes, and we only have one car which means half of my plans to hang out with my friends are ruined when I wake up and find my mother has went to work with the only vehicle and won't be home until 8. I was wondering how many people find a 14 year old boy riding a bike 3 miles appropriate. considering my neighborhood I fairly small, I can't ride it in it.

Answer
I was certainly riding my cycle more than 3 miles when I was 14.

From the age of 11 I was cycling to school every day, and going for longer rides with my friends at weekends.

OK, this was over 40 years ago, and there is more traffic on the roads now, but I do think that cycling is an important way for a young person to develop road sense before learning to drive a motor vehicle.

As long as you can handle the cycle well, and you know the rules of the road, I see no reason why you shouldn't be using your cycle to get around. The size of your neighbourhood is irrelevant, whatever size it is you can cycle around it.

what are the ages recommended for a 20'' bike to the seat?

Pompuff

its 20 in from the ground to the seat

Answer
http://www.sportsauthority.com/sm-determining-your-bike-size--bg-2857481.html this website has charts for bike to height charts, its not the age thats important, because some kids are a lot taller than others, so they cant use the same sized bike just because they are the same age... but a 20" wheel for kids would fit anyone from 48-60 inches(look at the charts on the link)... it can also depend on inseam... i need a large instead of a medium because i have a 32" inseam but im only 5' 11"... if the chart is too confusing go to a bike store, they will professionally fit a person to the right sized bike

We go biking one day, running the next, and swimming the third (ages 7 - 11). Any good routines for the swimming portion. We do "workouts" (no extreme) in the water for halt an hour then play games in the water or on the field.

Answer
Light gymnastics by the pool side before going in (stretching exercises and such). Then lengths in the pool from a few per day, to more, progressively.

What are some fun things to do in Burlington, VT with kids?

gamma05772

My two daughters ages 9 and 11 and I will be in Burlington, Vermont for a few days. I've never been there before. What are some fun things to do there? We were planning on going on the bike path by Lake Champlain, and a tour of Ben & Jerry's, and the teddy bear factory, and maybe a boat ride on Lake Champlain. Any recommendations for a boat tour that would last a couple hours ? They love nature so activities centered on that would be great to hear about. Thanks.

Answer
WE took in the Fall the SUgarbush Express train from Middlebury, VT to Burlington. It was 1.5 hours and the same back. Good foliage. Burlington has had street performers in the past, but It's been 5 years since I went last. THere are plenty of restaurants, even one that allow you to order your specific breakfast, omelets to order, waffles freshly made and topped, etc. SHopping. Lots of hilly areas so be prepared. UVermont is there. Check the AAA guide or Mobile guide. I think they had paddle boats at one time too. You can cross into NY and go to Fort Ticonderoga.

How old were your kids when they learned to swim?

My son is almost 2, and he knows how to swim with arm floats. He almost has swimming down in general. My husband and all his brothers, learned at one. I taught myself at like 10. When did our kids and you, learn to swim?

Answer
I started trying to teach my daughter when she was 8, a few months after she learned to ride her bike. But we had two insanely hot summers, so we didn't get very far.

This summer was milder, but a lot of family drama. We almost lost her dad multiple times due to complications of an injury. She finally officially became a swimmer at age 10, a few weeks before her 11th birthday. Next summer we will improve her skill level.

I personally learned how to swim when I was 21. I saw how much my daughter loved playing in the water and decided that while she plays splashing games with Daddy, I would go out shoulder-deep and teach myself to swim. I am still not really good enough to save anybody, but at least if there was an emergency, I can keep my head above water while someone else saves the non-swimmers.

How do I figure out what size my daughter's bike is?

arliesmom

She needs a bigger bike, but I have no clue what size her current bike is. Someone once told me it has something to do with the tires but I have no idea where to look, there are several numbers on her tire. I see no numbers anywhere on her bike.
The only numbers on the tire that I see besides how much to inflate them is a 56-4013. Does this mean it's 56 inches?? My daughter is 10 years old.

Answer
While frame size is used for adults, tire size is the method used for sizing children. Age indicates size needed but height is better.

My daughters are 9 and 11.5. My 9 year old has almost outgrown a 20" wheeled bike. And my 11.5 year old now rides a 24" mountain bike and has for 2 years. She is 56" tall now, a little short for her age.

The tire size is ALWAYS imprinted on the tire you just missed it. Try looking at the other side. It will say something like 20 x 1.75. 20 being the diameter of the tire and the 1.75 the width. Do not measure the wheel itself as it's not what is used. You also can simply measure the tire height with a yard stick. Standard tire sizes are 12, 16, 20, 24 and 26" for kids. I'd guess she currently has a 20" and needs a 24" now like my daughter

Since your daughter is in between my girls, I'm pretty sure you want to buy a 24" now. However if she is really tall, almost 5 feet tall, you may want a 26" bike.

If money wasnt an object, and I wanted to take my 9 and 11 year old on a week trip, and I wanted it to be something FUN, memorable, learning experience, as well as a bonding experience where should I take them?

Answer
Yellowstone National Park is pretty awesome for a week

Orlando or California theme parking, they are a good age for that.

A cruise on carnival or disney.

Oahu- go snorkeling, kayaking, biking tours, visit the memorial, parasailing, etc.

A river rafting or ocean kayaking expedition with a guide is a must do.

It'll all be fun if you don't overschedule, do goofy stuff, and don't stress trying to get too much done during your vacation.

Are there any good camping places to take kids 10-14 in Missouri?

MommaDoo

We want to take our kids who have never camped somewhere family oriented. My husband and I both grew up tent camping.

Answer
We live in the Missouri Ozarks and have 5 children ages 9, 11, 12, and two 14 year olds. Our favorite place to take our family is Alley Springs campground on the Jacks Fork river. It is about 6 miles west of Eminence. It offers plenty of sites, some with electric, hot showers, flat level sites with paved roads for bike riding, and a good swimming hole. About 1/2 mile away is the Alley Springs Mill and spring with two hiking trails, one that goes around the spring area, and then a more difficult one that goes up to a lookout that is above the spring. It is a beautiful place. Hope this helps!
