Best BMX bike for small kids?

Ozean Okea

My son just turn 4, he has a Strider bike that he loves and fully controls but it's time to get him one with pedals. I want something lightweight and good to do tricks at the skate park because that's what he likes and wants to do, but everything in retail shops is heavy and bad quality. What brand would you recommend for a kid that is starting?

Answer
Regrettably, you really can't size a bike by age... kids come in all shapes and sizes.

If you are looking for a quality bike with 16" wheels you may as well forget it. Manufacturers make the assumption that the bike will be ridden for no more than a year until the child grows out of it... BUT, if you don't mind spending the money you could have one built for you. A frame and fork would cost about $800-1500, and a build kit would have to be pieced together which would cost about the same. There are VERY few light/ high grade small bike parts so any adult sized parts would have to be modified one way or another.

If 2 or 3 grand is more than what you want to spend I suggest that you visit a Diamondback dealer. They do a reasonably good job with their kids bikes and you may be able to get away with around $150.

tag along with existing kids bike?

Kilino9

I saw on the street a kids bike attached to an adult's bike with a sort of a tag along pipe kind of a thing. Does anybody know where to buy it or what it is called

Answer
There are two different types. One is called a Tag A Long that is made to attach to the seat post of an adult bike and the other is a boom type device that lifts the front wheel of the childs bike off the ground. The tag a long is a much better design.

Do a Google seach for.
Tag a Long
Wee Ride
Bike trailer

You can them about anywhere.

College kid looking for a bike?

chemkid212

I'm a girl moving to Austin next year to go to St. Edward's University. My parents can't really afford to let me take my car with me, and we're going to get me a bike to use around the city. Austin has quite a few hills, but it's a really, really bike-friendly town. There are bike lanes and bike racks everywhere.
I'm looking for something not too fancy or high-tech (I'm not a crazy athletic cycler or anything), something great for riding around town, and good for hills. My budget is about $300-400 max, and I'll need something that lasts. Any suggestions to help get the job done?

Answer
I would suggest a touring bike is more suitable for college minus the use of a car.
http://www.downtheroad.org/Equipment/Bikes/Touring_Bicycle.htm
Things have changed greatly since my days at the University, but we used to have to carry big books around that seemingly weighed a thousand pounds and cost a thousand dollars a pop. You may think I am exaggerating but college has built its endowments on students carrying books to class. As a college student you will need to carry other items beyond books. I can't think of a better device than a touring bike. Its not necessary that you have all of the brackets protruding with nothing to do, but having the capability to carry things is makes this choice a best buy. I would check at a bicycle store, Craigs list and bicycle news papers to purchase a used touring bike. You need a serviceable bicycle with gears, sturdy, something with a robust build to withstand the elements for years to come. A touring bike would best suit you.

I wish you well.

How to calm my nervous horse on out rides?

Kai

II bought a 7 year old mare from a farmer who used her for general farm work. She has a big scar in the front of her chest and is a little sensitve on this. I think that she might have ran into wire as she was living on a cattle farm. Other than that, she has not been mistreated or hurt. She was sleeping in the veld and slept inside a stable for the first time in Nov when I bought her. She has a lovely personality. She doesnt bite, kick, buck except se might be a bit lazy. She goes like a dream when I work her in my grass arena.I've noticed that she also freezes when there are something funny/new, like the fly masks or having a blanket on. With the blanket, she frose for about 10 min while I put it on and fixed the buckles all while talking to her like I do normally. After a while she relaxes and starts eating her hay again. I have no problem after this and she wears her blanket without a problem. My problem is out rides. She gets very nervous. And not with the usual bikes, kids, motor bikes, cars ect. My friend rides with on her TB and he gets a little strung up every now and then. Funny thing is, this is when she is calm. She just ignores him and will even pass him and cary on walking. She gets nervous when there are other horses around like the neighbours horses comming to the fence to say hi. This is when she freezes. When I push her forward, she backs up and then wants to run. Luckly I've stopped her but then she is really nervous and starts shaking. A friend sugessted I get of and lead her pass the scarry things. I cant get off because when she "unfreeze" she backs up and she pulls me into the air and then she is really nervous. As long as I ride her, I can manage her and she calms down much easier. I've tried leaving her untill she "unfreezes" herself but this takes a while sometime and this make me nervous. She is 15.3h and I'm tall but she still manage to drag me off my feet when she spooks. Andy ideas how to fix this?

Answer

Are 50cc gas powered dirt bikes legal for kids aged 13?

William

I'm 13 years old, I've been thinking about getting a gas powered dirt bike for kids, there are trails about 40 blocks away from my house, I plan on riding there, doing a jumps, and riding back. Is it legal to do that?

Answer
XYZ is correct as are the others.
Your parent will have to haul the bikes the 40 blocks to the trails. You cannot operate this on the road. Illegal.
I will give you credit for asking before making the decision to spend money on a motorized toy.

What is a good dirt bike for a little kid?

My son, Cayden is turning 3 on October 8th. Don't tell me he's too young to be riding dirt bikes. The kid has been riding dirt bikes and quads since my dad bought him a little ones on his first birthday. Right now Cayden is using my little brother's old dirt bike that he had when he was 3. I want to get him a brand new one but what is the best dirt bike?

Answer
DMR Transition dirt jumper is suitable for both amateurs and experienced riders. The great advantage of 26in Transition is its weight that encourages the riders to go for dirt jumping and you would not feel the weight when you are in full swing. Specifically designed drive-train of this jump bike gives great momentum and pushes the bike with good agility while airborne. No doubt, DMR Transition 26in is the right bike for dirt jumpers and street style riders.

Would you feel strange riding a bike in your neighborhood?

David

I have a treadmill and an exercise bike in my house but I often want to get out and see something other than my walls when I exercise. I thought about riding a bike around my neighborhood, but at 27 years old, I feel like this would be weird. I associate bikes with kids for some reason and would feel strange to be seen riding a bike down my neighborhood streets. I know this is stupid, but I can't help it. The only people I see riding bikes in my neighborhood are senior citizens and kids.

Would you feel strange riding a bike in your neighborhood at my age?

Answer
Not at all. Maybe it's all in your head. there is really nothing wrong with it. I've seen people your age riding bikes. Actually, different ages. Bikes are for everyone. It's not strange at all.

need to puchase over 100 bikes for kids for x mas and was hoping some one could tell me the best way to go. I want all new for kids 3 to 15 yrs old. this is charity...any ideas?

Answer
you are in bicycle heaven in the bay area so maybe you should ask a bunch of people in the bike industry to see what they could do for you. maybe make a flyer and pass it around to the bike shops. talk to the managers and the shop workers. my husband was a messenger and a bike mechanic for years and the bike community is close i'm sure they could help you out in some way.

try handing out flyers at a critical mass or a turkey day ride. they have a huge one in sacramento. try bike co-ops and maybe infiltrating a century ride. lots of people with a lot of pull do those.
