Name some good bicycle helmets for kids 9-15 yrs and why are they so good?

All Wal*Mart helmets or other chain / low cost store helmets have passed safety standards in the U.S. That's why thaey can be sold here...

So.. anything you buy will meet the same standards... Expensive or cheap.

Buy something that your child likes (color / graphics), otherwise they will fight wearing it...

The bigger the vents, the cooler they are.. probably not a critical thing for a child sitting in a bike seat not doing any strenuous exercise, but once your 9 to 15 year old is doing the hard work of pedaling, then a cooler helmet will be nice.

Expensive helmets are usually lighter, and have bigger vents... That's where the differences are... Not in the amount of protection they offer.

My state does not have a helmet law (bicycles or motorcycles). so there is nothing "National".. your state may have specific helmet laws.. you need to check on that.

BMX helmets give the illusion of offering more protection.. it may be more than an illusion though. They cover more of the skull. They are more like a hockey helmet... They have a higher "cool" factor than a regular bike helmet... since they are also used by the skateboard gang.. They may be a bit heavier though.

Fingerless gloves with padding in the palms are the only other riding item I would suggest...

Contact some of your local bicycle clubs; I've seen some run fundraisers to donate helmets to kids.

But, sounds like these aren't "poor kids" but jsut that their parents don't enforce a helmet rule like you do. Why not just talk to Mom n Dad?

Or, you could go to any big discount store and find plenty of helmets under $20 each.

I can not count the number of times as a kid I flew over my handle bars on my bike, and walked it home bloody knees and all...I have the scars to prove it.

I was not overly clumbsy, just a country girl that rode my bike most everywere.

I never wore a helmet or knee/elbow pads. But I see these kids now days that are wearing every protective gear short of being wrapped in bubble wrap and I wonder ...

will they have scar to show off when they grow up? isn't that just a part of childhood?

I understand the helmet for those that live in the city with ashphalt and speeding cars...but sometimes I think we overprotect our kids.

I too do not think there were helmets when I was a kid, and I am not saying they are not needed, especially in the city...i was just curious as to who worn them and if their kids where them.

My 4 year old daughter has a couple of them for when she rides with Papa on the 4 wheeler (he drives really slow, but I still prefer her to wear it.)

Yes I wore a helmet. Scars are an inevitable part of childhood but massive hemorrhaging of the brain doesn't have to be. What, you think there are no trees or rocks out in the country you could whack your head on while flying over the handlebars?

I don't need alot of the goverments big long boring explanation on each laws and how its turn into a law. Just a short simply understanding of why we have it.Some may makes sences others may not. If it has to be in a kids friendly way. That's o.k. too. I'm just curious. I know about the bicycle helmet law and what its for(to protects our noddles..lol.. ;-) and then there is a more serious one like you can't be marry to more than one person at a time.Which I thinks the guys hate that one..lol..

How can the average kid help get smoking banned?

Q. I am doing a brochure for my seventh grade language arts class. We are working on persuasion; I chose smoking to be my topic. My argument is that it should be banned, but I need to use some persuasive techniques for a good grade. One way I was planning to do this is to explain how kids in my class can help get smoking banned. Any ideas? Thanks.

Firstly, I very strongly disagree about banning smoking, largely on the grounds of individual freedom, and if you want to ban smoking, you should ban alcohol, a more destructive drug first.

Being underage (thus unable to vote) there is very little that kids can do, except encourage adults to quit.

I'm not sure telling kids how they can help get smoking banned will help be persuasive and it does distract from the main arguement, which is "why smoking should be banned", instead of "how to ban smoking".

Here are some persuausive arguements I would use:
*ask the class to think about if cigarettes were a new invention, and were not widespread in society, and if they should be allowed.
* Argue that the smoker is not only harming himself, but also others (2nd hand smoke) including her/his family who have to suffer the grief of an early death.
*Argue that the government has a moral responsiblity to protect people from things like tobacco that may kill them, and tobacco should be banned for the same reason riding a bicycle without a helmet, driving a car thats unsafe, or riding a car without a seatbelt, to protect the safety of the individual.
*Point out the costs to smoking on society (including not only medical expenses, but days of work due to illnesses) and argue that society should have a right to protect itself by banning things that impose costs on it.
*Lastly, ask the kids to think if they had children would they allow them to smoke. If not, why should we (society) let adults do it.

Like I said, i do not agree with banning smoking, but the above arguements should be persuausive. Good luck with your assignment.

I have to do any essay on why helmets should be worn with a bicycle and motorcycle.
I need 3 reasons: so far I have that it keeps you safe and it really doesn't inconvenient a person to wear one.
I need help with a 3rd reason though.

It's a good example for younger children. All little kids should wear them because they have a greater chance of falling off and hurting themselves. If they see older kids and adults wearing them, they might be more inclined to.

FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet.

FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage.

That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.

How can you legally travel on a 50cc scooter with a toddler?

It is legal in Missouri to drive without a license or helmet on a 50cc scooter and I would like to purchase one to cruise around town. However, I am concerned about how much I would use it. I would use it more frequently if I could legally carry my 3 year old with me. Just curious if it's legal and what I should get to protect him (other than a bicycle helmet).

A bicycle helmet will do NO good.
3 years simply isn't big enough.

I'm all for kids riding, my son sat behind me at 6. There are minimum requirements, even if not written into law (they are law elsewhere): Dedicated seat for passenger, dedicated footrest for passenger (which they must be able to use), handhold(s) for passenger. Helmet - and a styrofoam cooler is for beer, not pavement.
The passenger must be large enough (and understand enough) to be able to hold on. The helmet must fit properly - good luck finding a hat for the little melon.

I added an extra set of pegs for Jr. The law said he must reach, did not specify must be in original location.
